Bottesford C of E Primary School gets thumbs-up from Ofsted

As a result of a recent inspection on 26th/27th January 2010, Ofsted judged Bottesford Church of EnglandPrimary School to be a GOOD school that provides a good quality of education and where theOUTSTANDING spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils is a particular strength.

Ofsted acknowledged that pupils of all abilities and from all backgrounds, including those with additional needs, makegood overall progress. They recognised that pupils are well prepared for the future as pupils have good attendance, generally have high level of basic skills and good levels of confidence. Pastoral care is a particular strength and they

state that the school promotes community cohesion very well with some very strong elements. Mixed age provision andteaching was also highlighted as particularly effective. The school is very pleased with the outcomes which recognised and celebrated what they do well and confirmed areasfor further improvement. The headteacher Louise McGrory says the outcome of the report is a direct result of all mem-bers of the school community working closely together: staff, children, governors and parents, and she would like tothank everyone for their commitment and support.

Local residents make the most of theJanuary snow on our beautiful Beacon HillWe have all had a bitterly cold winter and, unusually, a white Christ-mas. Although this was an inconvenience to most of us at somepoint, there was also an opportunity to take advantage of the big

freeze and have some fun for many members of our community! Thanks go to Melton Borough Council and the Post Office for main-taining an efficient refuse collection and postal service, and to theParish Council for keeping important pavements clear.Spring is just around the corner!

    Football coaching success story

Emma Seymour, a pupil at Nottinghams Becket School, has recently success-fully completed the Football Association Level 1 Coaching award. The coursetook place at Dayncourt School in Radcliffe-on-Trent over several evenings andweekends in the autumn. To pass the course Emma had to plan and lead a va-riety of coaching sessions and keep a log book of everything she did, includinglearning about first aid and child protection laws.Emmas motivation for gaining this qualification was to develop her work withthe Under 7s group that she trains at Belvoir High School on Saturday mornings. The sessions last from 9.45 till 11.00 and are open to all children under 7 whowant to learn to play football and have some fun. If your child would like tohave a go, just turn up at the school and talk to Emma.Congratulations Emma!

Charity began at home in 2009Over the last few months there have been a lot of charity events and it is re-markable to find that, even though a lot of people are struggling with the creditcrunch, donations have gone up from the previous year. Events included theFriends of Chernobyls Childrens Tombola, school fund raising, the British LegionPoppy Day appeal which well exceeded last year; and the Lions Duck Race.Well done everyone all this with Christmas on top. It is great to know peopleare still willing to help others less fortunate than themselves and it is good tofind villagers pulling together.

Vale of Belvoir Lions ClubThroughout 2009, the Vale of Belvoir Lions Club continued its activities with theemphasis on Fund Raising for worthwhile charities and appeals and providing astrong sense of Community Service. These endeavours would not have beenpossible without the active support of enthusiastic friends and family for whichthe club is ever grateful. They are also grateful for your support for events likethe Bonfire, Quiz nights, Duck Race and Christmas collections. Further eventsalready planned for this year include the May Day Gala and another Open gar-dens.

In 2009 they have made donations to Dove Cottage Hospice, Rainbows Chil-drens Hospice, the Skateboard park, Belvoir High School and others. The club iscurrently working hard with the Bottesford Parish Council to provide muchneeded defibrillators for public access.

school buses manoeuvring in and out of Barkestone Lane, which makes life dan-gerous for pedestrians. When shopping please be considerate to fellow residents, and remember wehave a car park on Walford Close, close to both the High Street and QueenStreet shops. Be warned illegal parking will result in a fine.

Derek Collett (pictured left) & Malcolm Owen (right) are the churchwar-dens of St Marys Church. Churchwardens are elected by parishioners of

any faith or none, not just by church members, at an annual meeting ofparishioners. Elected annually, for continuity purposes they are expectedto serve for up to six years and fulfil a range of legal and church duties.Churchwardens are the officers of the Bishop, co-operating with the Rec-tor of the Parish, and charged with using best endeavours by exampleand precept to encourage parishioners in the practice of true religion andto promote unity and peace among them. They hold the title to all mov-able items in the church and have a duty to maintain the church buildingand churchyard; no mean task with the ancient Grade 1 Listed building ofSt Mary, Bottesford! At church services, the churchwardens are responsi-ble for the taking and recording of collections, the provision of bread andwine for communion and the seating of the congregation. In periods of inter-regnum between Rectors (as at present in Bottesford),the Churchwardens chair the church council, are closely involved in theappointment process for a new Rector and have additional duties to en-sure that regular services are conducted and the church is available forBaptisms, Weddings and Funerals. So this is a busy and onerous time forthe churchwardens, when the dedication and support of the Administra-tor, retired clergy, members of the PCC and all who serve in so manyways is absolutely necessary for the work of the church to continue inBottesford, Normanton and Easthorpe.
