A MESSAGE FROM SUE WIRTH

Dear Families,

Leaders from across the state gathered last week to hear the Department for Educations ACTIONS

for 2020 and I reflect on how they support our work at Modbury West School.

1. Challenging learning

Increase learning achievements for every student through school improvement plans

2. Quality People

Support for quality educators in our school

3. Strong Engagement

Partnering with parents is a key priority as we work to help set up every child for success.

4. Better Support

Developing an inclusive school with high expectations of excellence and achievement

5. Targeted Resources

Improved school facilities. This includes resurfacing of our school carpark.

Our school has also entered into a course with the Berry Street Behaviour Model. All staff were

involved in the first day learning about strategies to engage even the most challenging students.

This education initiative is different, because it is based on proven positive education, trauma-

informed and wellbeing practices that enable students’ academic and personal growth. You may

hear students discussing circle time, morning circles, brain breaks and belly breathing. We hope to

Traffic issues continue and we are working with the Tea Tree Gully council. An information meeting

is planned, with details soon. We are also concerned that drivers continue to ramp on Onslow road

rather than taking a safer option and going around the block, until their child is at the back gate for

pick up. School finishes at 3:05 but children take a few more minutes before they arrive at the back

gate.

Our recognition awards this term are supporting the learning “Treating others as you would like to

be treated”. It is part of the Play is the Way program and the Golden rule!

Enjoy the long weekend as our autumn weather can be very pleasant for spending time outdoors

and being active.

Kind regards,

Sue Wirth

Principal

REMINDER to parents of secondary students, they should only come onto the grounds with their parent/caregiver. If the secondary student is picking up a student can they please await at gates of school.

Thanks.

Nunga Kids Group News

Hi, our names are Mabel, Kruz and Torry and we are in M16.

At our last Nunga Kids Group we did an activity where we created a graffiti name. We entered our name

into the website, then we chose a font and a colour we liked, then we traced it on the piece of paper.

The other activity was an All About Me graffiti style poster. We filled in personal information about

ourselves and our goals for the year.

Mabel – I like going to Nunga Kids Group because it is fun.

Kruz – I enjoy going to Nunga Group to meet other people, socialise and do fun activities.

Torry – Nunga Kids Group gives me a chance to get to know other Aboriginal kids.

WE ALL BELONG AT MODBURY WEST SCHOOL

Harmony Day.

They will have a whole school picnic lunch outside where they can sit with friends and enjoy each other’s company.

A whole school assembly will be held in the gym at 2pm hosted by M19 and U1. Family and friends are welcome to join us

Students are encouraged to wear a plain top and enjoy classroom activities to spread the message of harmony and

taking a stand against bullying and Violence.

If your child has a traditional costume from their heritage which they would like to wear for the day or to change into for the

Many thanks to the hard work of the 2019 Community Events Committee (CEC) and the MWS families who contributed towards the

fundraising efforts last year. Students decided they wanted to use some of the fundraising to go towards playtime activities.

Check out all the new games students have been playing…

‘We love playing with the new games’ - Bella

‘It’s fun to have other games to play in the yard’ - Jack

‘We like to play with lots of people and we sometimes have to use a timer so we all get a turn!’ – Brooke

Anti-Bullying Policy – Modbury West School

Introduction

At Modbury West School bullying and harassment are not tolerated. Our school prides itself on creating an environment where all members of our community feel safe and supported. What is Bullying? Bullying is when one person or group uses power to make another person or group feel helpless. It is deliberately hurtful,

targeted and repeated.

Bullying can take a variety of forms:

Verbal: name calling, put downs, threats

Physical: punching, kicking, tripping, belongings stolen

Social: being left out or ignored, having rumours spread

Psychological: stalking, dirty looks

Cyber Bullying: offensive and/or threatening messages, graphics, and photographs sent through media devices such as mobiles,

computers and iPad, social media abuse e.g. Facebook

What can you do about bullying?

If you are bullied or you know someone who is being bullied, please report it.

Who to report it to

Tell your teacher, a member of leadership, or a trusted adult at the school. You can also tell your parents or caregivers.

How to report

Tell the adult where the bullying happened, how often it has happened, how many people were involved in the bullying and what you

have done to try and stop it happening.

When to report

Report the bullying to a trusted adult as soon as it happens. DO NOT IGNORE IT...it will not go away until you do something about it.

What does our school do about incidents of bullying? At Modbury West School we will listen to the person who is being bullied

and the person who exhibits bullying behaviours.

We will use a restorative justice model to ensure that all involved in the bullying will be able to feel their concerns are listened to and

acted on. All participants will be offered an opportunity to tell their story.

We will put in place negotiated consequences for those students who bully. These consequences may include restricted play zones,

office time out, community service, parent meetings, suspension or exclusion.

We will follow our agreed Grievance Procedures. Parents can access this information in the parent handbook.

We will ensure that our practices and responses to bullying behaviour take into account the age, ability, social and emotional

development and experiences of students.

What we are doing about bullying at Modbury West School?

Prevention Strategies include:

Annual wellbeing surveys, participation in anti-bullying workshops and implementing the Keeping Safe curriculum.

Our teachers incorporate social skills within their daily interactions with their students. We use the Play is the Way framework

which centres around the Golden Rule—”Treat others as you would like them to treat you.” Our School Values of Respect,

Rigour and Resilience are considered as valuable social pillars on which to build a school community based on mutual

respect and care.

Our students follow supporting policies including our school’s Behaviour Policy.

Professional learning for staff.

Intervention Strategies include:

Counselling of students who are the target of bullying.

Counselling of students who exhibit bullying behaviours and putting in place consequences for bullying behaviours.

Page 10: Issue No. 3 - TERM 1 2020 - Week 6 A MESSAGE …...1 1-2 Perform movement skills in a variety of sequences Incorporate effort, space and time in simple movement sequences. Extra Curriculum

Working in partnership with parents or caregivers.

Teaching students about their role as responsible bystanders.

Ensuring all staff are aware of how to address bullying effectively and respectfully.

Post-intervention strategies include:

On-going monitoring of the student who was the target of the bullying ensuring his/her safety and wellbeing collaboratively

by all staff.

Continued updating of parents and caregivers.

Ensuring our procedures are catering to the needs of our students.

Reviewing and evaluating behaviour codes and policies through staff discussion, student voice and wellbeing survey

feedback.

At Modbury West School We Believe:

Bullying is everyone's business and everyone's responsibility to reduce it.

At Modbury West we do not have a “one size fits all” approach. This is because each person is different and each incident of bullying

is different.

At Modbury West we work in partnership with parents, the targets of bullying and students who exhibit bullying behaviours to negotiate

an outcome where all parties feel supported.
