We sadly lost Connie Clark recently and our thoughts go to her family and friends. I went to America last month on aviation business and fun, and we visited the field where the Wright Bros created and perfected flying, the recreated cycle shops they worked in, and the giant USAF museum at Dayton. We then went to Newport News in Virginia, and visited the Naval museums including the USS Wisconsin a giant WW2 Battleship sitting alongside the Nautilus museum in Norfolk, in the heart of the town. Amazing! I liked Virginia.
Village Day was well attended and the weather was kind. We are not live with Voneus, are there many more of you out there who are not? Initially our service in November was just OK, but the leaves grew on the trees in the spring and took our signal away! There is a solution that is awaiting implementation.
Please note that this year we are reviewing advertising charges as our costs are only just being covered by our revenue, and we must keep heads above water. We have-n’t raised them in 10 years! So when you get a revised bill in November please stay with us as the existence of the Calendar relies on this advertising and sponsorship. Without this income or with less money than we need, we wont survive.

Talaton Open Gardens Weekend
Open Gardens 25th Anniversary Weekend We had another lovely, relaxed and happy two days enjoy-ing the 13 gardens open this year. These gardens really did display a wonderful variety of plants and designs and clearly demonstrated what amazingly talented gardeners there are in Talaton, Newtown and Larkbeare. I cannot thank them enough for so generously sharing their gardens with us and for all the hard work and time they put into making this weekend so memorable. Peppi’s special silver anniversary plant sales were an especial success.

Many thanks to all those who gave plants
and garden related goods to our stall at
Village Day. You helped us raise more
than ever.
Jobs for July
Weed regularly. Remember the old saying, “One year’s seeding, sev-
en years weeding.”
Water veg such as lettuces and cabbages to help prevent bolting or at
least delay it.
Net peas, brassicas and soft fruit against birds.
Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the tops of their
supports so that they don’t grow too long and become tangled and
top heavy.
Feed tomatoes and peppers and don’t forget to keep picking out to-
mato side shoots.
Dry out garlic, onions and shallots by gently loosening the soil around
the roots eventually lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground to dry.
Weather permitting!
Keep dead heading flowers to prolong their flowering period.
Then sit back and think about what to enter in the show. Don’t forget
it is on 10th
August.
Happy gardening.

Open Gardens Weekend Cream Tea Report
Well another May Bank Holiday came and went, where does the time
go Open Gardens Weekend was a busy one to say the least, the
weather was good and lots of people came out to enjoy the lovely gar-
dens that were on show and for a break and a rest they headed for the
hall and my goodness did they come Saturday started off slow but as
the afternoon went on it got busy but I had a good team of helpers
my sister Diana, my son Daniels partner Tash and Kate Cordwell and
were we kept busy and yes we were.
Sunday came with new helpers except my sister Diana,my daughter-in
-law Treenie, my granddaughter Katie and last but not least my son
Barry. The customers came and kept coming but we had it covered
PHEW of course I could not do any of this without the ladies (too
many to mention sorry) who bake the cakes and there were many and
varied and this year we almost sold out. There is one cake I would
like to mention from a new lady and it was a lactose free carrot and
walnut sponge it looked amazing and went in the blink of an eye, but
I would like to thank ALL the ladies who made a cake or two, I really
do appreciate it and here’s hoping that I can call upon you all again
next year.
Thank you all from Gerry Hawkins

Walk For the Month July 2018
A Ramble to Black Aller Covert and back to Cadhay Bridge.
Park in the ample space opposite the Cadhay Bridge Farm, just outside Ottery St Mary (Grid Ref SY 0903960). From here, staying on the winding path, follow the river for almost a mile. At times the path takes you way above the river giv-ing wonderful views whilst taking you through tangled roots and trunks of giant beech trees. In season, you can enjoy an abundance of flowers, ferns, and birds. Eventually, in sight of the weir and fine old bridge you meet a road. Beside the bridge is what would have been the level crossing keeper’s cottage, on the old rail line (pre Beeching!) The route of the rail is visible, as is the site of the cross-ing gates.
Move left over the bridge and immediately right, over the stile and on to the Public Footpath. Soon look for the stile on your left. Over, bear right and soon
Map OS Explorer 115 – Exmouth & Sidmouth. 1:25000. 6.5 miles
Easy, level ground, wonderful riverside scenery, open views, apple orchards and free-range hens. AND a gem of a walk through the Covert. Follow a bit of the old rail
line to Sidmouth Junction (Alright, Feniton!). Minimal road walking.
______________________Page 29
the river meanders away to the right, leaving you to move forwards, rising up on to the old railway embankment. Take a moment to enjoy the view down the river and beyond. Keep an eye open as you wander along this now unused rail route for signs of the brick bridges that carried the line over culverts. There is almost an expectancy of having to stand aside for the old iron beast to chug its way past. What a journey it would have been.
You will come to a high, old bricked arch beyond which you will pass under a newer bridge carrying the old A30. Bear right along a narrow, almost secret path that wends its way between the old and new A30’s. Noise on the left- quiet on the right! At the exit, bear left over the new A30 and carry on, leaving the noise behind, straight ahead along a wide open track, keeping the hedge on your right. Pass a couple of new windmills on your right. Follow the hedge round to your left and immediately move over the stile in the gap in the hedge. Follow the hedge around, passing – in the season- incredible blossom of the apple or-chards which in turn are sheltering hundreds of very happy free roaming hens.
Leave the fields via the steps and stile beside the gas installation box out on to a minor road. Left, and at the corner right into Feniton. At the Nog Inn, bear left along the Talaton road for about 500 yds. and on the bend take the Public Footpath off left, through the metal gate (The sign is on the opposite side of the road!) Keep the hedge on your left and at the gate and stile move left. Follow the edge of the field round, passing a “communications tower “to pass left through a metal gate. Again keep the hedge on your left and at the wire fence follow it this side of the wire down to the Escot Estate concrete road, having passed between two huge firs. Right here along the road for about 300 yds. and then before the cottages, move left through the wide gate into the gem of the walk – Black Aller Wood or Covert. Aller is the older and alternative name for Alder. This is a truly delightful 1000 yds. of trees, bluebells, ferns, Magic ! At the end of the straight, bear right and come to a clearing from which you move left to a wooden kissing gate. Onwards to the metal gate to wander down to the river on a made up track. Under the bridge and round to Escot Church. Via a little gate, move to the right round the Church and reach the road using the long straight stony track.
Left uphill at the road and with care cross on to the minor lane on the right. Right at the junction, winding downhill to just before the flood warning sign. Left here on to the Public Footpath. In winter an annoying puddle makes the first few yards of this path quite difficult but normally no problem. Follow the hedge on your left sparing a moment to capture the views then at the metal kiss-ing gate bear right to the footbridge. Over here – what’s that little brick arch on the ground? – and move diagonally left over open pasture to meet the road. Left and back to your car, passing another crossing keeper’s cottage and the well preserved crossing gates.
