Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Today the College has taken possession of the new building. Over the next couple of weeks there will still be some workers completing some minor works and College staff will be shifting furniture and equipment into the rooms. This should all be completed by the end of the Easter holidays and classes will begin in the building at the start of Term 2. This will mean that all of the Year 7 classes, all drama classes and some manual arts classes will operate out of the new building. The Chapel will also be open and Father Liam will conduct his Tuesday Mass in the new chapel from the start of Term 2. Once the final works have been completed I would encourage parents to visit the College and have a look around. I am confident that you will be very impressed. I would ask that we wait until work is completed and the necessary fencing and handrails are installed. Last weekend a number of families participated in the Parent-Son Retreat. My thanks to Mr Hawkins for conducting the retreat and from all reports it was a very worthwhile experience for those involved. Currently, teachers are finalising marking of exams and assignments and preparing reports. The reports will be completed and posted home over the Easter break. The Term 1 report is a full academic report and includes results and teacher comments. A considerable amount of effort is put into the reports so that they are informative and provide an opportunity for parents, staff and students to reflect on the Term and develop strategies for Term 2. Over the Easter holidays there are a number of school activities taking place including a rugby and soccer tour to Canberra, the Open Rugby camp at Alexandra Headlands and rugby and soccer clinics at Curlew Park. I encourage parents to check the details of these events so that students are participating when required. Finally this week the College will be hosting the CRYPAR Touch Football Tournament next Wednesday. This is an initiative between the Queensland Police Service and local Indigenous groups. The focus is also on youth violence and students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will have an opportunity to visit the display in the Callan Centre during the day as part of developing a greater awareness of youth violence. This event will be followed by the Shore to Gate Day on Friday 8 April. Students will be required to wear their sports uniform and hat on this day. The end of term Liturgy will begin our day at 8.30am followed by the Shore to Gate. Students will be dismissed by 12.30pm on this day. Have a great week. LAST DAY OF TERM It has been a very good first term of the year with so much energy across the College. Successful cricket, swimming and volleyball seasons saw hundreds of St Pat’s men represent their College, some for their very first time. The Seniors have taken on their responsibility as Big Brothers with great pride and distinction. It is a vital component of our pastoral care program. The Induction Mass, Ash Wednesday and various year level Retreats have helped to create a strong spirituality amongst our community. The boys have been very warm and supportive to each other, further developing their Band of Brothers. Parents have been heavily involved with our co-curricular program, Parent Information evenings and the very successful Shindig. There is much that we should be pleased and thankful about. To help celebrate our first term together, the annual Shore to Gate is planned for next Friday (April 8). We will commence with our Easter Paraliturgy, followed by the Shore to Gate, and House BBQS will conclude the day. It is planned the students will be dismissed around 12.30pm. Students who wish to run the course will set off first. Sports uniforms, hats and water bottles are all that are needed for the walk/run. It is important that all students attend the day and celebrate being part of our community. Parents are most welcome to join us for all or any part of the day. The Shore to Gate is also our major fundraising event for the year. We have asked every student to raise at least $20 to help contribute to the cost of air-conditioning the O’Conner and Edmund Rice buildings plus supporting our House charities. Please encourage your son to make an extra effort this weekend to gain sponsors/donations.

TUESDAY MORNING COLLEGE MASS Each Tuesday morning, at 8.00am, Father Liam, College Chaplain, offers the College a morning Mass in the College Chapel. Next Tuesday 5 April, will be the last of the College Masses for Term 1, 2011, and also the last in the current Chapel before we move to the new Chapel in our new building. It will be good for parents and staff and students to come and pray in thanksgiving for this term, safety during the holi-days and from sporting injury, and in preparation for the graces which God has prepared for us at Easter.

STUDIES

Chris Campbell—Assistant Principal Curriculum

The College focus statement 2011 reads

“VALUING THE OPPORTUNITIES” “PREPARING THE FUTURE”

“LEADING THE WAY” All three of these goals are both relevant to all of us in the St Patrick’s Community and achievable. My sense in observing the students, working with teachers and speaking to families is that there is a great willingness to make the most of their time at school. Willingness yes, but sometimes with the best of intentions, many young men aren’t always clear of exactly how to ensure that they are doing their best. Take the recent exam block as an example. Attendance was excellent, with almost 100% of students present at all exams. Overall the approach to completing the exams was first class, with boys arriving with the correct equipment and ready to do their best. Hence, with so many positives, why is it that there is a lingering concern in the back of my mind regarding how well we are performing as a student body. Last week on Assembly, I spoke of a conversation with a senior school student

who is heavily committed outside of College hours with part time work and club sport training. This young man loves being at St Patrick’s. When he is at St Patrick’s he is a positive influence, a great role model in terms of his spirit and behaviour. Nevertheless, there is no way he is going to do well in the exam block just finished. He simply has not done enough study. There is no doubt that when he is here, he works hard, unfortunately only working hard between 8.30 –3.00 just isn’t enough. His extensive social work and sporting commitments are, to be blunt, ruining the opportunities that this fine young man could and should be taking advantage of. The question to all of the young men in our student body is, “are you giving yourself every chance?” If you find that you are too heavily committed outside of school hours, then you are probably not. Do you have a part time job? If so, how many hours per week? Are you playing both school and club sport? Do you spend hours each night on social networking sites such as Facebook, or playing computer games? Many of our students are in this category. Whilst they love being here and will no doubt, remember St Patrick’s fondly as well respected old boys, in

many ways it is a shame, because I am always left feeling that they have done well but could have done and achieved so much more. The essence to addressing this is to make a greater commitment to study. Not just completing your homework, but to spending time at him doing extra reading or solving extra problems. This requires sacrifice. To do this will mean that you cannot do everything. This is the reality for everyone as we travel through our lives. We’d all like to do more than our lives allow. For those of us who ultimately achieve great success, they are the ones who developed the discipline to make themselves do the less attractive things. No one can really say they love study. However the great irony is that unless we learn to do this and commit a large portion of our times outside school hours to school work we will never maximise our full potential. Valuing our opportunities and leading the way isn’t just about showing terrific school spirit. It’s about doing the most important thing, which is our study, and doing it well.

NEXT STEP 2011

The Queensland Government will again be conducting its annual state wide destination survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2010. The Next Step survey is a brief confidential survey that aims to gain a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers.

Any person who completed Year 12 last year can ex-pect to receive a telephone call or instructions to com-plete a web-based survey, between March and May 2011. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the inter-viewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate in the sur-vey. Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2011.

TERM 2 UNIFORM A reminder that all students are required to wear a College tie from the beginning of Term 2. Also all students in Years 10, 11 & 12 students are required to wear long trousers and blazers. These are available from the Uniform Shop now. HATS All students are required to have a St Patrick’s broad brim hat and it is to be worn when students are participating in HPE and the various House carnivals at the College. Today all students were required to present their hat during House Assembly. House Deans and Group Tutors also labelled this item. We need to take precautions to protect ourselves from the damaging effects of the sun. Students who don’t have a St Patrick’s broad brim hat will be required to purchase one from the Uniform Shop. LOST PROPERTY There is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office from

lunch boxes to uniforms and particularly shoes (black leather and sporting). It is disappointing that these items are not labeled. It is important that all items are labeled so that it can be returned to its rightful owner. At the end of this term we will be doing our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul and the Uniform Shop of any lost property which has not been claimed. Please come in and check it out. BLAZER A reminder that all boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be required to wear their blazers to and from school during Term 2 and 3. In preparation for this I ask that if dry cleaning of blazers is required, that this is done over the next couple of weeks for the commencement of Term 2. MOBILE PHONES A number of students continue to ignore the Mobile Phone Acceptable Use Policy. This causes disruption to classes and the normal operation of the school day. Detentions have been

issued to these boys and I ask all families to be familiar with the policy on pages 156-157 of the Student Diary and to reinforce these guidelines with your son. PUBLIC TRANSPORT St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. FORMS Years 9 camp forms are due back by Friday, 3 April 2011. LAST DAY OF TERM All students will be dismissed at 12.30 pm on Friday, 8 April. It is expected that all students attend school until 12.30 pm. Students will commence the day with an Easter liturgy followed by the Shore to Gate. All buses will complete their normal Bus runs departing the College at 12.30pm.

On Thursday 24 March we celebrated “Close The Gap Day” at St Patricks with all the Year 8 students. National Close the Gap Day is a way for all Australians to join together and remind our political leaders of their commitments to close the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation. The day was kicked off with a discussion about Close the Gap Day by Mr Paul Corfield. The guest speaker, a well know Indig-enous artist Arthur Conlon, told the students about his life growing up in Cherbourg. Arthur presented a series of workshops focusing on Indigenous Art to the all the Year 8 students. He demonstrated the techniques of dot painting and x –rays art and put the students through their creative paces. Each student finished a drawing and these will be on display in the library early next term. Arthur will also design a mural in the Aboriginal style with the help of students and staff. This will be put in a promi-nent place at school. The Indigenous students also had a chance to meet the local Elder of the Wakka Wakka tribe, Uncle Pe-ter Bird and his wife Auntie Lorelle and Brother Jim Darcy from EREA, who celebrate the day with us. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained further insight into the Indigenous culture in Australia.

Xavier House Report

Page 10

As Term 1 is drawing closer to completion, many of the boys are excited for Easter and its holidays. After working for hours on exams, it is great to see the dedication from the students to do their best and to end this term with a high standard. As you may know, the Xavier House project is currently working toward raising $1,500 for Guide Dogs Australia. So far, we have had numerous visits from guide dogs ‘Erin’ and ‘Dorie’ plus three of their han-dlers in support for our Coca Cola sale, where we raised well over $900. We look forward to continue to work together as a ‘pack’ for this great organisation, thank you to all those who have contributed to our cause. One day we hope to reach our ultimate goal of $30,000 to raise one guide dog from pup to fully commissioned adult. A sign of how the Xavier Wolfpack is coming together as a strong new contender for the House Shield was through our exceptional effort at the swimming carnivals and in chess, coming 4th overall in the standings of 8 other Houses. It was awesome to see every boy in Xavier having a crack at everything that the House has to offer. We hope that this good start will continue to rise up and above any expectations that people may have about the new House that is contending fiercely for the House Shield. Peace, Luke De Gee Tom Weise

ACTIVITIES

DIRECTOR OF SPORT—LUKE DONATINI

It is always extremely pleasing when we receive positive acknowledgement and feedback from parents, in particular when the parents are from another College.I would like to share an extract from a letter I recently received that highlights to me what SPC sport should be all about.

“I just wanted to compliment your school on the exemplary behaviour and good sportsmanship of your 7A cricket team and their coach. (My son plays for St Laurence's College)

I'd particularly like to acknowledge the coach/umpire/teacher who was with the boys and provided great encouragement for both teams.

I know as a school you have been through some very difficult times over the past year but your boys continue to be a credit to the school.

My father was a former teacher at St Patrick’s College and he would have been very proud.”

I would publically like to thank this particular group of Year 7 cricketers and all those associated with them for displaying the standard of conduct, general behaviour and sportsmanship that we would endorse at St Patrick’s College. Unfortunately, last Saturday at Curlew Park (our first ‘home’ games for rugby and football for 2011) some of our students have managed to somewhat tarnish this reputation by their poor attitude and behaviour, poor dress standards and inappropriate language. Though it was by no means the majority of our students in attendance guilty of such inappropriate conduct, there were enough students who displayed a lack of respect for our College, themselves and others around them that it was noticeable. We ask that all parents please support us by speaking with your son/s about what is appropriate and acceptable behaviour whilst attending any sporting event or function. Our expectations for ALL SPC students (without exception) are:

Kind and courteous behaviour at all times.

Use of appropriate language at all times (swearing of any description on or off the playing field will not be tolerated).

Correct dress standards both on and off the playing field at all times.

All Year 8 to 12 students who remain at AIC rugby/football events to spectate MUST change into FULL College formal uniform (this will include black belt, College grey socks and black school shoes). All students will be required to wear their College tie in Term 2.

Positive and encouraging cheering only (negative cheering and taunts will not be tolerated).

Respect the decisions of game referees and venue officials at all times.

SPC sporting events are not ‘social functions’ for our students to interact with girls from other schools. Those students attending an SPC sporting event are there to compete on the sporting field and/or to support other SPC s porting teams who are competing.

Any St Patrick’s College student who does not follow the above mentioned expectations on ‘game days’ may very well be asked to leave the sporting venue. Further action may be take in the preceding week should it be deemed necessary.

Sporting Wet Weather Procedures The College provides you the following option when dealing with wet weather or cancellations: Junior and Secondary Sports Information Line is 36319080.

If your son (or daughter) requires a new fitted mouth guard, we ask that you please contact /make an appointment with the Bracken Ridge Denture Clinic, 2 Wurley St Bracken Ridge. The clinic is run by a St Patrick’s College family and they have kindly offered to donate some of the proceeds of each mouth guard back to St Patrick’s College. All money raised from this venture will go towards the purchasing of further equipment for our new College Gym (currently under construction).

“Great Morven Race” As part of our St Patrick’s Day celebrations last week we conducted the annual Great Morven Race. "Morven", the central building of our campus, was constructed in 1864 as home for one of Queensland's first Parliamentarians, Mr John McDonnell. From 1890 to 1910 "Morven" was the official summer residence for the Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Wylie Norman. In 1951, Father O'Rourke, parish priest of Sandgate pur-chased "Morven" with the intent of beginning a school for boys. Today it still sits majestically overlooking Moreton Bay. This year over 200 boys ran in four different age groups around Morven. The results were as follows:

PRACTICE FOR NAPLAN BIS COMPETITIONS TERM TWO Term Two begins a new season of the Brisbane Independent Schools (BIS) Public Speaking, Debating and Chess competitions. The Brisbane Independent Schools Program gives our years 5, 6 and 7 boys the opportunity to compete against other colleges in chess, public speaking and debating. It is conducted over three Tuesday evenings in May. Parents this is also an opportunity for boys to prepare for the upcoming NAPLAN test in Term Two as the Public Speaking practice reinforces the in school teaching of the Persuasive Text being taught in preparation for these nationwide English tests. Preparation for the BIS will involve some practice after school to compete at evening meets to be held on the following dates: Tues May 3, 2011 Tues May 17, 2011 Tues May 31, 2011 If you’re interested contact Mr Geoff Samuels, Mr Paul Arcodia or Mr Dan Reid at the following contacts [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

DEBATING NEWS Wednesday night saw our Year 8 Team 1 finally make their debut in the QDU competition (after their Round 1 postponement). Whilst narrowly losing, the boys gave an incredible first performance. James Anderson, Matthew Weekes and Alister Kerr were particularly impressive for debating novices, putting forward rebuttal that would rival that seen in some of the Year 12 debates. The boys and their coaches, Ms Georgakis and Mr Seers, should be congratulated on such an accomplished start. The start to Round 2 proper saw a clean-sweep for St Patrick’s with our Firsts, Seconds and Year 10 teams all winning. The Year 10 boys encountered our first short preparation debate of the season, with boys only given an hour to prepare an argument for a topic. Jacob Johannessen, total debating rookie, stepped into the role as first speaker with only a few hours’ notice and has stunned coaches and spectators with his adept command of debating. Congratulations to all coaches and teams on a fantastic week of de-bating. Next week our Year 9’s continue their campaign at Albany Creek State High, both teams at 8:15pm . The Year 11’s will be at home at 7:00pm (receiving topics at 6:00pm).

Dear Parents, My apologies for not keeping you all up to date with what has been happening with the P&F this term. As a secondary teacher myself, I can tell you it has been a very long and extremely busy term. Rest assured, however, the P&F has been slowly but surely achieving some goals. First, I would like to thank everybody in the community for the support they gave to this year’s Shindig. It was a great night and thank you to Michele McKeering and her band of helpers for organising such a wonderful function. One of the truly great parts of the night was the number of parent helpers on the door, selling raffle tickets, on the bar and prior to and after the night. One of the major aims for the P&F this year, and hopefully into the future, is do more for the school. This began at our last meeting. It was decided that the P&F would cover the cost of the initial creation of the Memorial Garden. And for those of you that have seen the garden you know what a marvellous feature it now is within the school landscape. It was also decided that the P&F would provide funds to acquire some furniture for the Chapel in the new building. These include a lectern and side table for Father Liam. The P&F is also investigating the purchase and installation of shades/umbrellas for the courtyard directly in front of Morven. If there is anybody in the school community who can assist it would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, to continue this kind of support the P&F has been looking at ways to raise funds. We are now finalising the Easter pie drive fundraiser. Thanks to all who supported this. Soon, the Entertainment Books will be available. The P&F is looking at a number of options for Semester Two and welcomes any suggestions from the community. Which brings me to my final request. One of the best meetings we had this year occurred on the same night as the Years 7-9 Netbook Meeting for parents. The number of parents who just “dropped in” was fantastic. The P&F, like all the other support groups, cannot survive without the support of the parents. So, if you would like a say in what the P&F does or does not do for your son’s school, attend a meeting. We would like to invite all parents, and in particular the parents of the Year 5, 6 and 7 boys. Your boys are going to be at St Pat’s for quite a few more years and the P&F invites you to be involved in what we, the parent body, can do for them and the school in the future. So, check out the calendar! Circle in red the date for the P&F Meeting! And SEE YOU THERE! All the best. Malcolm Steele President, P&F
