The ARC-ITSC Citrus Plant Improvement team is under the management of Arthur Sippel based at the ARC-ITSC in Nelspruit. The team is divided into different disciplines namely Breeding (Zelda Bijzet, Nikki Combrink & Sakkie Froneman), Evaluation (Johan Husselman, Christo Human, Johan Maritz & Lucio Zuma), Horticulture (Re- gina Cronje), Post Harvest (Sibongile Mhlophe), Biotechnology (Karin Hannweg, Anita Severn- Ellis & Gerrit Visser) and Germplasm (Theuns Anderson). Breeding activities are located at two sites namely; the Addo Research Station in the Eastern Cape and Malelane Research Station in Mpumalanga. Some notable successes coming out of this Breed- ing Program in the past years have been the X639 rootstock, 202H Shaddock, Eureka Seedless Lemon, NovaARC, B17 mandarin and Sonet. Citrus breeding is a long term project and the breeding cycle can take up to 30 years from the time of making the cross until a successful vari- ety can be released, making citrus breeding very much a team effort.

KIWI FRUIT TOUR TO ITALY

Several South African growers will join an international group of aspirant Soreli Kiwi growers on a tour of the Italian Kiwi fruit industry in September. The growers that are participating in the tour are from Australia, Chile, China, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey and the USA.

A R C C I T 1 6 1 4 The B17 mandarin receives a face lift - new name and re-lease of new plant material.

The B17 has been renamed the ARCCIT1614. The variety is protected by a PBR registered in South Africa and filed in a number of ter-ritories.

The variety has been under evaluation in a number of trial sites in the Western & Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga for the past 12 to 15 years. The variety has proved itself as a viable commercial variety and has been well received by the market.

The fruit ripens and is harvested in Mid July and enters the market in August. The ARC-CIT1614 produces good consistent crop loads year on year.

The variety is extremely tolerant of Alternaria as illustrated in the picture on the right.

An initial target of 1000 ha’s was agreed upon by the ARC and the CGA. Growers have expressed keen interest in planting the variety and only a limited offering of hectares is still available to growers.

FUNNIESONLY IN AFRICA

A range of 15 blood orange and blood mandarin hybrids are currently under evaluation in 14 sites across the country. The evaluations are producing inter-esting and exciting results for the future. This evaluation program commenced in 2005 and is an ongoing project to provide safe planting guidelines to producers in the future.

The pigment in blooded citrus is caused by anthocyanin pig-ments which are water soluble and are stimulated to form in the fruit as a result of diurnal range and stress in late summer and autumn.

ClemenGold™ has featured in quite a few publications recently, amongst oth-ers Freshplaza, Fresh Fruit Portal and a ClemenGold™ promotion by Wool-worths.

An extract from Fresh Fruit Portal:ClemenGold mandarin exports to Eu-rope this season are on course to rise significantly this year with shipments to Germany and Austria up by 50%, and U.K.-bound shipments rising by 20%.

The trademark is collaborating with Spanish-based brand SanLucar who will act as the master agent in Germany and Austria, distributing the fruit to Edeka and Kaufland supermarkets.

ClemenGold chief executive officer Abs van Rooyen, said 200-300,000 15 kilo-gram boxes would be shipped to the two countries and alongside this a strong point-of-sale promotional campaign would be launched.

“This is significantly bigger than the pre-vious year. We are very excited about the potential to further establish the Clem-enGold brand with European customers.

“The forecast for this season looks good, with some high quality fruit coming from South Africa. We’re also expanding our supply base this season, with fruit from South America, Peru in particular.”

Velddae Noord Kaap
