We need new pants and new or gently worn

bras for distributing in Africa through S4A

We are collecting all year.

Please bring into the County Office.

Thank you.

After 12½ years working at the County Office, County Secretary Corinne Stant retired on Thursday 6th April. On the previous Tuesday, a coffee morning was held for people to come and say their goodbyes and she was presented with gifts from the County team and her work colleagues.

Corinne worked for four County Commissioners and countless Baden-Powell Challenge Coordinators so has seen many changes in guiding.

She will be very much missed not only by the office staff but by all the people who rang daily with queries of varying degrees. Her knowledge of Girlguiding Leicestershire was immeasurable.

We wish Corinne all the best for her retirement and are sure that in the not too distant future we will see her again in a different volunteering role.

Do you have anyone you’d like to nominate for the award in 2017?

The Midlands Region Chief Commissioner’s Award may be given to any member of Girlguiding Midlands (which includes Leicestershire), who has given outstanding service to local guiding at unit level. Any other roles held by the nominee are not relevant to this award. Recommendations for this award may be made by anyone within or outside guiding.

Please contact [email protected] for advice and a copy of the nomination form including guidelines for completing the form, or contact your Commissioner.

Forms must be returned by email to [email protected] or posted to Maggie Silver, Girlguiding Leicestershire County Office, 97 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7DW, no later than Monday May 8th 2017.

We will acknowledge receipt of all forms, so if you have sent a form and have not received an acknowledgement, please contact Maggie to check that it has been received.

Invitations to attend an Award Presentation will be sent to the successful nominees from Girlguiding Midlands, normally in September. The date for the presentation in 2017 will be confirmed shortly.

Nine girls attended the DofE Basic Training Weekend at Thurnby in March. During the weekend they learnt the skills they would need to complete their expedition: everything from reading a map to packing a rucksack and cooking on a trangia.

They put their newly acquired navigation skills into practice with a walk on Sunday morning and are now looking forward to completing their practice expedition in the Market Bosworth area late April, and will complete their qualifying expeditions in July in east Leicestershire.

The Gold canoeing teams have completed several training sessions, including capsize and rescue skills. They completed a 16km paddle along the Nottingham canal and the River Trent in April, and are currently preparing for their practice expedition from 29 April to 1 May on the River Trent before their qualifying expedition on the River Wye in August.

We still have spaces available on this summer’s Silver walking expeditions in the Peak District.

Forthcoming DofE dates:

27-29 May Silver practice expedition

8-9 July Bronze qualifying expedition

26-28 August Silver qualifying expedition

Registration forms are available on the Girlguiding Leicestershire website, www.leicestershireguides.org for anyone aged 14-25 who wishes to participate in DofE.

Help from interested adults is always appreciated - there's more to DofE than the expedition!

Contact Lucy Faulds on [email protected]

for further information.

Girlguiding Leicestershire Centenary Challenge Are you up for the challenge? There will be lots of activities for all sections. Units will have to complete 4 clauses including one outside of the unit meeting place.

All details will be on the website soon, www.leicestershireguides.org so you will only have to download what you need. The badges have arrived and look great!

Leicestershire Round 100 miles around the county

We would like to invite units to walk as much or as little of the Leicestershire Round as they wish, but a minimum of 1 mile must be walked to gain the specially designed badge (cost £1 each).

You can walk at any time - during the day, replacing an evening meeting or during the weekend - between the 12th to 25th June. We are hoping to have a couple of led walks across some of the more challenging areas which will be advertised closer to the event. Decide which leg you want to walk – you can complete as many sections as you wish. For more information, to download the booking form and order badges go to the website, www.leicestershireguides.org

Sam Harrold, Assistant County Commissioner

Could you be a Young Leader Champion?

Are you passionate about encouraging the next generation of Leaders?

If so we need you…

Anyone can be a Young Leader Champion. All you need is enthusiasm and the ability to work alongside our Young Leaders and be their voice in your area.

What does it involve:

Attending an occasional meeting with the County Young Leader Adviser

Supporting Young Leaders in your area by speaking up for them at a District and/or Division level and helping to create opportunities for them to develop as Leaders and become more involved in their guiding community.

Visiting or arranging a catch up with the Young Leaders in your area.

Passing on information circulated by the County Young Leader Adviser.

Why do we need Young Leader Champions?

Young Leaders can often be overlooked and sometimes forgotten about, particularly if they don’t attend a Senior Section unit.

They are the Leaders of the future and we want to keep them engaged with guiding.

If you think this is something you might be interested in and want to find more contact Rachel Smith, County Young Leader Adviser at [email protected]

Going Away on a Brownie Residential? If you are thinking about completing a residential licence then please complete the form we enclose with the Going Away With Scheme book purchased from our shop and return as soon as possible. We can then assign you a Mentor who can help support you with your planning and working out what evidence you need for your folder. It's a good idea to visit or help out on other holidays prior to your own as a way of sharing good practice and to help you with running your own holiday or sleepover. If you have started your licence and have not heard from us or your Mentor, then please contact us. We are happy to help when emails aren't finding the right people.
