Tamagawa University spends a year at

The Essington School Darwin and stays with several of our families over

the year.

We will also be hosting a visit by twenty-four Year 6 students from

Tamagawa University School for four

days in early Term 3. We are keen to

organise homestay accommodation for these Year 6 students with our Year 6

and Year 7 students. Expressions of

interest are invited and should be

emailed to: [email protected].

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to our Middle School students, Mia Jesson, Ellie Price,

Isabella Dalrymple and Coco

O’Halloran who are currently

representing the Northern Territory in the national Hockey Competition in

Tasmania. Mia and Coco were both

selected for the NT U15 Hockey team.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

COMMENCES NEXT WEEK The Interschool Cross Country

Competition is a great community sporting event for Essington students,

families and teachers. Each year we

have a large number of students and

school community members participating in this great Term 2

activity at Casuarina Beach (near

Dripstone Cliffs). Students are

encourage to be at the venue by 4.30 pm ready for the 5 pm start of the 2

and 3 kilometre runs. At the conclusion

of the run (around 5.30 pm), Essington

students receive a drink and snack. Every student (and family member)

who participates gains a point for our

school, regardless of where they come

in the run. The top ten places score high points for the school.

BUILDING UPDATE:

The Essington Education Centre Work has been completed on the

Languages Centre and the Science

Laboratory and Preparation/Storage

Room on the ground floor of our new Essington Education Centre. Students

are now using both these two excellent

new specialist teaching areas.

Some final work is taking place on the

new Art/Craft Centre on the ground

floor of the Essington Education

Centre and this will be completed by Thursday 24

th April ready for student

use on Monday 28th April.

New signs have been placed around the campus to indicate the various sections of the school – and the gate numbers for deliveries, etc. This will assist people unfamiliar with the expanded campus and contractors and deliveries to the school. The main executive and finance offices have been set up and progressively staff are moving in to this area on the middle floor of the Essington Education Centre. We are now focusing on setting up the ground floor secretarial offices so we can complete our move to the Essington Education Centre. Landscaping work has occurred in the last two weeks to the front of the building and you may have noticed our new flagpoles and planted grass in the front of the Essington Education Centre. You will notice the sculpture has been relocated from the front of the building and will be reassembled by the Department of Education at another site. Work will now take place at the back of the building around the entrance areas for the downstairs Art/Craft Centre, Science Laboratory, and Languages Centre.

The Essington School Darwin 2

Dr. Obara, President of Tamagawa University, Tokyo, is welcomed to The Essington School Darwin by Board members Vicki O'Halloran and Janet Russell, Life Member and Founding Chair Professor Grahame Webb,

Principal/CEO David Cannon and senior staff members.

Cross-Country Competition We would like to provide a variety of

outdoor activities and experiences for

students attending the After School

Care program. The Cross-Country

Walk/Run competition is one such

opportunity that is being offered this

term. The competition starts in Week 2

and is for students aged 5 to 12 years

old. Students that are older can run in

the Cross-Country but do not gain

maximum points for coming first.

Parents are encouraged to come along

and each member from the school

gains one point for our school. We

hope to get as many students as

possible to participate in this

competition. After School Care

students will be supervised by our staff

and will be transported to and from the

school. Students not accessing After

School Program can also be

transported to and from the school.

Cross-Country is on every Wednesday

from 4:30pm starting at Casuarina

Beach.

Sign In/Sign Out Procedure As you know sign in/sign out sheets

are located in the Preschool and Long

Day Care rooms. It is important to sign

this every day as you drop off and pick

up your child.

If someone other than yourself is

picking up your child you need to let us

know in writing in the comment’s

section so we are fully aware of any

alterations in picking up arrangements.

If you have nominated someone else

other than the immediate family

members, staff will request this person

to present a proof of identity to ensure

we are handing your child to the right

person at dismissal time.

Safety of children is of paramount

importance to us and we appreciate

your support and understanding with

this procedure. If you have any queries

please do not hesitate to come and

see me.

Great Gatsby School Ball To celebrate our 25 Year Anniversary

ANZAC Assembly ANZAC Day on April 25th, is probably

Australia's most important national

occasion. It marks the anniversary of

the first major military action fought by

Australian and New Zealand forces

during the First World War. Both

Middle School and Junior School

students will attend an ANZAC

Assembly on April 24th in the School

Auditorium. The next regular Friday

Assemblies will be held in Week 3.

Transition Notices

Pre-Transition/Transition T3

Karaolias Welcome back everyone! I hope you

all had a fantastic school break. It was

lovely hearing all about the children's

adventures over the school

holidays, and even reading about them

in the children's 'have-a-go writing'

books.

This week our sound focuses have

been the sounds 'sh' and 'th'. The

children were shown how to make a

loud 'th' sound and a soft 'th' sound

Junior School Report with their tongues. With the

introduction of digraphs, I have

explained to the children that some

letters of the alphabet become friends

and create a new sound together (i.e.

when they put their voices together -

like a song). Please keep practising

the sounds at home with the red

phonic cards I sent home with families

over the holidays and make sure you

now include the sounds ‘ch’, ‘sh’ and

‘th’.

Transition have also started their

learning of word families - with 'at'

words being the first. Please

practice creating some 'at' words

with your red cards at home as well.

Mathematics groups this week

involved the children reviewing and

demonstrating their knowledge of

numbers 1 to 10 and beginning to look

more closely at grouping. The

children are picking up this concept

well. I will be making up a ‘tens’ frame

for some of the children to have at

home. Please see me if you would like

one.

With Easter occurring at the end of our

first week back at school, we thought

we would do a bit of Easter

celebrating! On Wednesday the

children did an Easter rotation of

activities that involved creating Easter

baskets, decorating and dying boiled

eggs (a Greek tradition), making crafts

to add to our Easter baskets and finally

writing down the things you will find in

our Easter baskets.

Next week, homework and readers will

be commencing, along with a few

additions to each Transition and Pre-

Transition's homework load. Our

sharing news item will be a making

bag this term. I will put up a photo of

our making bag, so we all know what it

looks like, which will have craft items in

it for children to take home and make

something with - other family members

are welcomed to help with the making

process. The item will come in two

days later; allowing plenty of time for

any glue etc. to dry.

Congratulations to Rahee and William

for receiving a Merit Award this week

at Assembly.

Happy Easter everyone!

Christine Karaolias

Junior School Notices Welcome back to Term 2! This week,

the students in Year 2D have settled

back in to their school routine well and

have been working hard.

In Literacy this term we will be

focusing on information reports which

links with our integrated ‘Under the

Sea’ topic. This week the students also

wrote an Easter narrative using an

entertaining visual stimulus. The

stories were very creative and

humorous and they have published

their own books to bring home and

share with their families over the

Easter break.

In Numeracy this week we have been

focusing on the relationship between

addition and subtraction. Students are

also encouraged to continue revising

the money and time concepts studied

last term in real life situations at home

to assist them to consolidate their

skills.

In Health this term we have a focus on

healthy eating and healthy lifestyles

and the class enjoyed discussing

healthy food choices and why it is

important to lead a healthy lifestyle.

We will continue looking at this topic

further over the duration of the term.

Congratulations to Lucas Obando for

being awarded the Super Story Writer

Award this week!

Susannah McBride

Year 4C O’Connor

Welcome back to Term 2. It's been

interesting reading recounts about the

time off and by what I have read the

children enjoyed themselves

throughout the break.

This term we will be busily

investigating our environment. The

research will include looking at maps

and tropical rainforests with each child

given tasks to complete. Linking with

this topic, we will be investigating life

cycles during Science and the class

will be completing experiments and

observations.

During Health, we will have a 'germs'

focus and the class will again complete

experiments demonstrating how germs

are spread.

Selena O’Connor

Year 5B Brierley

Students have had a great start to

Term 2 this week, learning about place

value to thousandths and expanded

notation in Mathematics. Students

have also been using and applying

their Mathematical knowledge through

problem solving activities.

During English lessons, students have

been focusing on characters and

settings within narrative writing. They

have also been continuing with their

novel study of ‘Charlotte’s Web’.

Students have been learning about the

three states of matter in their Science

lessons, and later on in the term, they

will be designing and conducting a

range of experiments.

Middle School Report Middle School Report Curriculum Administration Parent Teacher Discussions Our Parent Teacher Discussions took place this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. We thank the attending parents for taking time to meet with their child’s subject teachers. If you were not able to attend and would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s progress, teachers are available on email or by phone. Middle School Interim Reports were mailed out to parents during the semester break. These reports use a rating system to indicate how a student is progressing against Learning Outcomes, Class work, Homework and Participation. NAPLAN Middle School students in Years 7 and 9 will sit NAPLAN tests on the 13

th- 15

th May.

For any students absent during the testing period Friday 16

th May will be used as a ‘catch-up’.

Can I withdraw my child from the tests? While participation by all students is expected, students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. A formal application in the manner specified for each state or territory must be received by the principal prior to the testing. Change in Literacy Plus Due to high demand we have taken the decision to split Literacy Plus to better suit the needs of all our students across the Middle School. From Week 1 of Term 2 Literacy Plus will be split into a Years 6/7 session and a Years 8/9 session.

When: Both sessions take place concurrently after school on Thursday from 2:50pm to 3:35pm. Where:

Years 6/7: MS12

Years 8/9: EEC8

The aim of these sessions is to offer our students the opportunity to review and extend the learning taking place in class and offer support with English homework. If you have any questions regarding Literacy Plus please feel free to contact your child’s subject teacher through the Middle School office or via the email: [email protected] If you have any queries regarding the curriculum, assessment or reporting at Middle School level please do not hesitate to get in touch via Phone: 8985 0165 or Email: [email protected] Siobhan Shaikh Acting Assistant Principal Middle School Curriculum Administration Coordinator

Middle School Notices Year 8 and 9 Physical Education Extension Class Physical Education Extension (PEEXT) in Term 1 saw the students focus on technique development in individual sports as well as gain insight into Injury prevention, strength and flexibility. Students were given the opportunity to test the limits of their body's capabilities and gain insight into the role of physical fatigue in relation to mental attitude during their 4 sessions at the Fitness Works gym in Nightcliff. Needless to say that all students responded well to all of the challenges that were put in front of them. In Term 2, the focus of PEEXT will shift to: high performance in Athletics events; personal fitness development through Cardio Tennis; and understanding of body movement through Gymnastics.

It was a great experience for our students and a wonderful evening. Upcoming Events With the dry season approaching we have many invitations for our students to perform at community events. rd April. All

students who have submitted a form and were meant to attend this day will still be attending. Please meet Mr. Bannatyne at the bus stop at 8am. Darwin Region Middle School Gala Days, Year 7 - 9 Basketball Gala Day On Thursday 3rd April, The Essington School Darwin sent four teams to the Darwin Region basketball Gala Day. Overall the day was a success with the Year 9 girls team winning all of their pool games by significant margins and

then going on to win their well-fought grand final to take home the pennant. Our Year 9 boys team, with the help of Patrick McKenzie from Year 8, battled hard all day against some exceptional talent and made great inroads in their own basketball development though were unable to overcome their opposition on the day. The Year 7/8 girls were able to achieve a great deal of their own success by winning all of their pool games in a cohesive fashion. However, they fell agonisingly short in the final few minutes of the grand final game to take second place by four points. Finally, the Year 7/8 boys mimicked their female counterparts by winning all of their pool games and going on to take second place overall in the grand final. All students deserve congratulations for their participation, attitude and endeavour on the day. Darwin Region Senior School Gala Days, Year 10 - 12 Senior students who are interested in attending any Gala Days will need to speak with Shaun Theiber to register their interest and seek notes.
