Dear brothers and sisters,

Peace in the Lord Jesus Christ!

This Sunday's liturgy focuses on our vigilant faith. We are reminded that we must be like faithful servants who stay awake waiting for their master. We need to open our hearts and minds so that we shall be aware of the Lord's coming into our lives, be it moments of prayer and recollection, in active service to our needy brothers and sisters, in the monotony of ordinary experiences, or in dra-matic events of our lives. We know that God has wonder-ful things in store for us. Bishop Larry Silva recently sent a recorded message of thanks for the success of the Grateful Hearts Campaign. We will have the chance to view this message during Mass this weekend. In line with this, I am happy to an-nounce to you that this week we have received the first installment of the Campaign amounting to $48,344.43. Many thanks to all our parishioners for supporting this Campaign.

God bless you, Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS

Welcome

Visitors To Our

Reflection                                                 by Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M.

Mission Statement: Centered on the Word of God and the Eucharist we gather as a commu-nity of disciples of Jesus Christ as we seek fullness of life. Blessed with many cultures and gifted with the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha we pledge to share our heritage and our faith, and commit ourselves to the full development of our people.

With Saint Joseph as our patron we offer our gift of self for the greater glory of God.

August 8, 2010 | 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C)    Wis 18:6‐9; Ps 33:1, 12, 18‐19, 20‐22 ; Heb 11:1‐2, 8‐19 or Heb 11:1‐2, 8‐12 ; Lk 12:32‐48

In my hometown of Cincinnati we have an unfinished subway. Begun early in the twentieth century, it consists of a couple of stations, and some miles of tunnels. It was abandoned before train tracks were even installed, and probably will never be used for its original purpose. We Cincinnatians like to joke about it, but in the late 1950's and '60's the unfinished subway did serve an unexpected purpose. For a time, during those years when we all feared that an atomic war might break out, part of the abandoned subway tunnels were outfitted to be a fallout shelter, complete with beds and supplies of food and water. It was an attempt at preparedness that, fortunately, was never tested. Today's Gospel is about preparedness, and having our priorities straight. It's a message Saint Luke intended for his community to hear. They lived some thirty or forty years after the time of Jesus. Perhaps they were becoming complacent. Luke wanted them to hear Jesus' stern words about being prepared for the Master's return. He also wanted them to hear Christ's admonition about priorities. The leaders in Luke's commu-nity were especially to pay attention: When more is entrusted to you, more will be ex-pected. These Gospel truths shouldn't be buried away like Cincinnati's unfinished sub-way. Let's allow them to live in our hearts every day.

Spiritual Retreat

There was a spiritual retreat for Catechists and others who are connected with Faith formation at St. Joseph and Malia Church. 40 partici-pants were there. The facilitator was Fr. Samuel, our Pas-tor. He began with the theme “Called forth” and all re-sponded in one voice “Here I am, I am listening.” It was then followed by sharing, listening, and responding. There was a video presentation “Focus Your Vision” which reminds us to follow the intuitions, looks for opportunities, and always to have a vision in life. Fr. Sam highlighted the importance of having the true vision to deepen the faith formation as a community. Fr.Joe Hennen, Fr.Sam, and Fr. Gorgee were available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, followed by the celebration of Holy Mass and then lunch in the company of one another.

Last Week’s Puzzle Answers

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the peo-ple, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, say-ing, go and search diligently for the child; and when you have

found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, the set out; and there ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising; until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
