QA3 Version 3.0

The Challenge: take Anetic Aid’s highly popularflagship product, the QA3 patient trolley –and make it even better

That was the task for the design team at the company’s Portsmouth base – to ensure theykept all the features that customers really valued in the current model – light weight, robust withsuperb manoeuvrability – and then take the QA3 Version 3.0 to the next level of ease of use, practicality and patient comfort all of this using any new materials and manufacturing techniquesand, most importantly, building on what customers said they wanted.

Extensive consultations revealed a number of key issues all of which have been addressed. One was the adjustable height range. The QA3’s design with one central column was alreadyunique, but this new version is now able to descend 100mm lower than the previous model, making it easier for frail or elderly patients to get on and off the trolley independently which isbetter and safer for them and, from a lifting and handling point of view, for staff.

Generally, people and therefore patients are getting larger, so there is an increased 250kg weightcapacity, and new ergonomically positioned handles are designed to make it even easier for staff topush the trolley with the patient sitting up or lying down. The mattress width has also beenincreased by 100mm, even though the overall width of the trolley has only increased by 30mm.

The cot sides too, have been completely reworked, and now fold away under the footprint of themattress, leaving virtually no transfer gap – again more comfortable for patients when they arebeing moved – and easier for staff doing the moving.

• A specially designed version of the QA3 for Accident & Emergency departments is alsoavailable. This will include an X-ray translucent platform, a medirail and optionalfeatures such as a monitor shelf and Venturi Suction System

QA4 in ‘Concept of Day Surgery’ film

The QA4 Surgery Trolley System recently took centre stage in a speciallycommissioned film to promote the concept of day surgery in a project involvingthe British Association of Day Surgery and its counterpart the InternationalAssociation for Ambulatory Surgery.

The film was shot in the Day Surgery Unit at Aintree University Hospital NHSFoundation Trust in the North West of the UK. Using an actor to play the part ofa patient, the film showed each step of the patient’s journey. Taking the exampleof a hand operation, the ‘patient’ arrived on site and was directed to the DaySurgery Unit on the second floor where he reported into reception.

He was called through and taken into an interview room to confirm his detailsand make the final pre-op checks before being asked to change into a theatregown. After a short wait, he and a Day Surgery Nurse walked down to theanaesthetic room where he got onto the trolley; one of the key benefits of DaySurgery is that there is no requirement for staff to lift or transfer the patientbetween trolley and operating table.

Once the ‘patient’ was ‘anaesthetised’, monitoring equipment was also attachedto the trolley and it was wheeled directly into theatre, where staff selected one ofa range of arm tables from the Anetic Aid accessory trolley to attach to the QA4whilst other staff checked through the required instruments for the operation.

Obviously there was no actual procedure, but the film picked up the journeyagain to follow the patient through first and second stage recovery where he wasable to get off the trolley himself and get dressed ready to leave the unit afterbeing briefed on what to do if he had any concerns etc.

Manager of the Unit Penny Hipwell, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon AndyMolloy and Consultant Anaesthetist Bill Horton were also filmed talking about thebenefits of day surgery from a patient, staff and Trust point of view and anintroduction for the whole film was presented on camera by President of BADS,Consultant Anaesthetist Ian Smith.
