Eventually the memory clicked in, and to me quite an interesting story unfolded... His name was Alan Thomas, and his surgery was in a small shop previously occupied by one Doreen Murphy (formerly Smith), and a sister of Hazel Williamson (well- known Maungaturoto history writer who now lives in the Maungaturoto Rest Home). Alan Thomas was a very large, rotund man and it must have been difficult for him to bend over his patients. He had a spaniel dog which was usually in the surgery with him and he seemed to regularly pet the dog and come back to the patient without bothering to wash his hands. So it was widely felt that hygiene left a little bit to be de- sired. I had terrible toothache one time, so set off determined to get rid of the tooth, which I duly did, and it wasn't too bad. However, that night, it (or where the tooth had been) was giving me what oh! In the morning I wasn't going back to the dentist so I went to Dr Jim Rennie, our local family doc- tor of the time, who flushed it out and prescribed antibiot- ics. It eventually came right, but after some weeks I felt something strange alongside the next tooth and up came a large piece of tooth enamel - part of the old one the dentist had removed. It was a popular opinion that dentist Alan was shortsighted also! His wife Hilda was a talented painter who painted many local scenes and some portraits. She painted with oils and one portrait was of an icon of Maungaturoto. Albert Causer was an old bachelor who, among other things, was the local gravedigger for something like over fifty years. He had whiskers, and a great number of local chil- dren called him Santa Claus. He rode into town every week on his horse to get supplies and to be checked out by the doctor. (I don't think there was even a lot wrong with him as he lived into his eighties.) Anyway, Hilda Thomas painted a portrait of him of which he was very proud. He usually wore an ex-Army 'lemon- squeezer' hat. I am not sure if he was wearing it in the portrait. He smoked a pipe, which I am fairly sure he was holding in the portrait, in an appropriate fashion. (How all old men held their pipes when they were telling you a story.) It was completed with the caption, 'A Typical New Zealander.' By that period of time, I myself felt that typi- cal New Zealanders had probably changed. Anyway, Albert Causer presented the portrait to Dr Jim Rennie and it hung in his surgery waiting room until he retired from his practice. Iwould be grateful to know where where the portrait is now, if anyone knows. Albert had a bad accident late one night - he went to sleep driv- ing his care home along the Brynderwyn Flats, and hit a power pole. He suffered serious injuries, from which, if I remember rightly, he didn't really fully recover. PS Alan Thomas was not the first dentist in Maunga- turoto - the first I can remember going to was 'Blazer' Wil- son, in the early thirties. With a name like that it was no wonder some of us got scared. - Alan Flower MAUNGATUROTO XMAS PARADE UP- DATE Come on Maungy, winter is over and it’s time to get in- volved!!!!!!!! Who was Maungaturoto's Dentist many years ago?

Recently I was asked - who was the dentist in Maunga-turoto, probably circa mid-sixties? Eventually the memory clicked in, and to me quite an interesting story unfolded... His name was Alan Thomas, and his surgery was in a small shop previously occupied by one Doreen Murphy (formerly Smith), and a sister of Hazel Williamson (well-known Maungaturoto history writer who now lives in the Maungaturoto Rest Home). However, that night, it (or where the tooth had been) was giving me what oh! In the morning I wasn't going back to the dentist so I went to Dr Jim Rennie, our local family doc-tor of the time, who flushed it out and prescribed antibiot-ics. Lou (Louisa) Roadley passed away at Whangarei Hospice on Friday 26th September, the result of a stroke which she suffered on Thursday 11th Septem-ber. Lou loved her time in Maungaturoto, both in Whaka road with her Husband Ces and in later years in the Retirement Village. Lou lived a full life and even after losing most of her sight still enjoyed all that life had to offer her, this in-cluded riding around on her double red scooter with her very special friend Doug at her side. We, Lou’s family would sincerely like to thank the Nurses at Whangarei base Hospital, the Staff at Whangarei Hospice and also the Maungaturoto Am-bulance Staff for all the care that they bestowed on our Mum, Gran and Great Grandmother. We would also like to extend a big thank you to all of Lou’s friends who contributed to her full and happy life in Maungaturoto. With love from Lou’s Family.

Thursday, October 6 saw the first of the club’s tourna-ments for the 2008-2009 season, The Heatley Memo-rial Fours. On a fine but cool day a high class field of 31 teams took part after a late cancellation the night before reduced numbers from 32. Players from 16 clubs took part. Silverdale, One Tree Point, Waipu, Waipu Ladies, Paparoa, Mangawhai, Hakaru Ladies, Onerahi, Ruawai, Wellsford, Warkworth, Maunga-karamea, Kamo, Maungatapere, Leigh, and Kensing-ton were all represented. Ten teams had three or more wins and should be the front runners for the $1200 travel prize for the team with the most wins, ends and points after the McCallum Christmas Fours, which is the second leg of the double on Thursday, December 18. The six teams with three wins were Murray Valance of Silverdale, Bob McKinney of Waipu, Naira Vaney of Maungaturoto, Kris Wintle of Paparoa, Fay Berridge of Ruawai, Ian McMurchy of Maungatapere. Four teams had four wins. Fourth - Jim Gill of Wells-ford, third - John Dunn of Onerahi, second - Bob Hodgson of Waipu, and first - a composite team of Northland juniors containing three Maungaturoto play-ers Terry McMahon, Kevin Flower, and Rex Roadley skipped by Richard Yanko of Onerahi. This will be the first time Maungaturoto names will appear on the Heatley Honours board for a good number of years. Well done guys. Altogether a very successful day for the club with an-other junior, Naira Vaney and her team, in the top ten. Virtually all teams have re-entered the McCallum Christmas Fours. Over the last month the club has had teams in Northland events with two men’s pen-nants teams and a women’s team, the first for many years. Also by the time this is printed, a men’s sev-ens team will have competed for three days over La-bour Weekend. Championship and Handicap events coming up over the next few weeks are: Women: 28/29 October - Championship Singles 18/20 November - Junior Singles Men 8/9 November - Championship Pairs 13/14 November - Handicap Pairs 25 November - Junior Pairs Remember also TWILIGHT BOWLS are on Thursday evenings. Make up a team of three or just come along and Irwin will look after you. ~Albie Paton

Paparoa County Depot Trust dispenses Grants

to Paparoa and Maungaturoto

In October 2008 the Paparoa County Depot Trust (PCDT) approved $12,500 worth of grants to various Societies and Community Groups within the Paparoa and Maungaturoto areas. The PCDT was formed Seven years ago, when the Kaipara District Council agreed to sell their depot at Paparoa to the Trust for $1.00. Brian Plunkett was the main instigator in forming the Trust and today is the Trust’s Chairman. It is administered by a dedicated team of Trust Members who are all volunteers. All profits from the rental / lease of the main building, sheds and yards are paid back to the community in the form of Grants on an annual basis. It also provides storage for the Paparoa Fire Party. During the first few years Grant payments were low as the trust established itself. From a Grant Payment of just $200 in 2002 to this year’s payment of over $12,000 is a great achievement, and the Trust members are to be congratulated. The next round of Applications for Grants will be advertised in August 2009.
