TIDBITS® LOOKS
BEHIND THE MAGICby Blue Sullivan
Cinema in America has entertained us with over a cen-tury of movie magic. Yet, during the making of some movies, equally unbelievable stories unfolded before the films ever hit the big screen. • In Steven Spielberg’s terrifying 1975 classic, “Jaws,” you don’t see much of the actual shark until very late in the film. That wasn’t just an aesthetic choice. It was due to all of the problems Spielberg and the crew had with the mechanical sharks that were used during filming.• Three different mechanical sharks were employed during the filming of “Jaws.” All were nicknamed “Bruce” after Steven Spielberg’s attorney, Bruce Ramer. • All three mechanical versions of “Bruce” proved un-reliable from the beginning of the shoot. The animatron-ics stalled the first time one was put in the water, and the sharks sank to the seafloor several times, leaving divers scrambling to recover them.• After completing the filming of “Jaws,” the studio had so little confidence in the film that the three Bruces were dumped on the Universal back lot. No efforts were made to preserve them, and none of the three original sharks remain.

Behind The Magic (continued):• A fourth “Bruce” was made from the same
mold as those used in the film. Although it nev-er had a place in the filming of “Jaws,” it was employed at the Universal Theme Park from 1975 to 1990.
• In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic “The Birds,” people in a California beach town are suddenly terrorized by swarms of birds. As out-landish as the premise sounds, it was inspired by an incident only two years before where birds in Monterey Bay suddenly began crashing into local houses. • Many years later, the strange real-life occur-rence that inspired “The Birds” was explained as the result of toxic algae in the birds’ water supply.• In the 1976 suspense blockbuster “The Omen,” a couple (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) takes on the care of an orphan who may literally be the devil’s spawn. The filming of this movie was so crazy it inspired the documentary “The Curse of the Omen.”• Not one, not two, but three planes associated with “The Omen” were hit by lightning during the shoot. Among those onboard during these three separate incidents were star Gregory Peck, screen-writer David Seltzer and executive producer Mace Neufeld.• Speaking of Mace Neufeld, his hotel during the “The Omen” shoot was the object of an IRA bombing. A restaurant frequented by the cast and crew was also bombed. Luckily, no one was hurt in either incident.• The special effects coordinator of the film had the spookiest scrape. On Friday the 13th, 1976, he crashed his car in Holland. When he got out, he noticed the road sign. It read “Ommen, 66.6 km.”• In terms of sheer danger, the film shoot for the 1925 epic “Ben-Hur” (the second of three cin-ematic adaptations of the novel of the same name) takes the cake. The chariot race in the film is still renowned for its realism, because the race was completely real. • “Ben-Hur’s” director Fred Niblo wasn’t happy with the initial footage of the race, so he staged it again. The second time, he told the stunt driv-ers that the winner of the race would be given the equivalent of around $1,000. Drivers took the race so seriously that there was a huge pile-up of men and horses before the finish line.• Another scene in “Ben-Hur,” a huge sea battle between two ships, proved equally dangerous. Ital-ian extras were recruited and separated by political affiliation (pro- or anti-fascist), then put on the two boats, to give the on-boat clashes more “realism.”

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season – Prevention is Key!
Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com
Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats!
The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Tylenol® Can Kill Your Cat!Tylenol® (acetaminophen) may be used safely by humans but it is a deadly poison when given to cats. Well intentioned owners are unaware of how toxic this drug is to their cat. Ingestion of 20mg/# of acetaminophen is fatal to most cats – this is the equivalent to one regular-strength tablet to the average 9-11# cat. Tylenol’s® toxic effects in cats are due to the development of methemoglobinemia and Heinz-body hemolytic anemia. The oxygen carrying capacity of the red blood cells is impaired and the cat dies of metabolic asphyxiation. Getting the ingested Tylenol® out of your cat’s system by inducing vomiting and rapid medical treatment to reverse the methemoglobinemia is essential. Even with intense medical therapy many cats die.
The early signs of acetaminophen poisoning are decreased appetite, vomiting, and drooling. The appearance of blue gums or brown-colored mucous membranes appear a few hours after ingestion and is caused by methemoglobinemia. Swelling of the face and paws is also commonly seen with this type of poisoning. With more time the destruction of the red blood cells starts and a hemolytic anemia develops.
A grave prognosis is seen when methemoglobinemia and Heinz-body anemia are severe and non-responsive to appropriate treatment. Cats that recover have no long term effects.Never give anti-inflammatory medications to your cat unless they have been prescribed by your veterinarian. If your cat gets into human medications immediately call your veterinarian, emergency hospital or Pet Poison Helpline 800.213.6680 (a consultation fee is charged).
Rapid treatment gives your cat its best chance of survival.

Nephrite
Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666
Nephrite is part of the Jade family and the term is used to distinguish it from jadite. Though similar in properties, nephrite is both more rare and more durable. That is why it was used in primitive times to fashion tools such as knives, clubs, and axes and used in modern times to adorn the body when worn as a gemstone. When considering nephrite whether for jewelry or as a carving, remember that there are many gemstones that imitate nephrite. But the problem is they are not as durable. So be sure and stay with a reputable jeweler or carver when shopping for items made of nephrite. Because nephrite is relatively abundant worldwide, it is not a costly gemstone. The price of nephrite carvings, however, can vary significantly depending on the quality of the artisan. The Chinese have prized the nephrite variety of jade more than any other gem-stone. For over 3000 years they carved flat discs with a central hole, termed pi, from nephrite to worship heaven.

Plan Now for Emergencies
Q: I wanted to write and remind your readers to have a plan in place in case of natural disasters. I
live in a hurricane-prone area, so I keep what I call a “hurricane kit” ready at all times. It’s stocked with
first-aid supplies, food, water and other items that I can grab and throw into the car in case my family
needs to evacuate. I also know the location of impor-tant papers so I can grab those, too. And I reserved a corner of my garage to store post-hurricane supplies like tarps, a generator and basic tools. I learned to do
all this several years ago when a Category 3 hurri-cane passed through my town, but not until after the storm. Now I’m prepared before the storm. -- Curtis
F., Orlando
A: Thanks for reminding us all, Curtis! Organization is key to surviving during and after a natural disaster, fire or other calamity. Here are a few tips to keep in
mind:--Prepare your family for the most likely scenario depending on your geographic location: hurricane,
tornado, blizzard, wildfire, flood or other event.--Learn about and prepare for household emergen-
cies, including fire, a gas leak, carbon monoxide leak, etc.
--Create an escape plan and rehearse it with your family.
--Create an evacuation kit that includes important papers, food, water, first aid, blankets and other es-
sential items.--Include pets in your plans! Add pet food and medi-
cines to your evacuation kit, along with a copy of their vaccination record and license. And keep their

• After separating the two sets of extras accord-ing to their violently opposed political affilia-tions, “Ben-Hur’s” director gave all the men prop swords that had actually been sharpened, again for “realism.”• In Howard Hughes’ misbegotten 1956 epic “The Conqueror,” John Wayne played Genghis Khan. Filming was disastrous from the very start, when a flash flood nearly claimed the entire crew of the film.• Later, “The Conqueror’s” lead actress, Susan Hayward, was attacked by a panther. Fortunately, she survived the attack and was able to carry on filming. • Most of the filming of “The Conqueror” took place in St. George, Utah. Heat during filming regularly topped 120 degrees, and, unbeknownst to the performers, not far away in Yucca Flats, Nevada, were the military testing grounds for the atomic bomb.• Eleven atomic bombs were tested in Yucca Flats during filming of “The Conqueror.” Not only were the actors and crew exposed to dusts blown over from the nuclear test site, filmmakers unknowingly shipped 60 tons of the radioactive dirt back to Los Angeles for reshoots.• There aren’t many films more beloved than 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Gar-land. A little known fact is that she wasn’t the child actor the screenwriters had in mind for the part. Their choice for the part wasn’t a child actor at all: W.C. Fields!• In “The Wizard of Oz,” actress Margaret Hamilton offered one of the best villains in film history — The Wicked Witch of the West. Her performance was so good, in fact, that many of her scenes were trimmed down or even removed because they were too frightening.

Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S., General Dentist
Master, Academy of General Dentistry
Q: Why Are My Teeth Sensitive?
A: Exposed underlying tooth structures. When protective
enamel is worn off, or gums have receded, tiny tubes on the tooth’s
surface are exposed. Certain acidic foods and beverages, hot or
cold drinks, touching your teeth, or breathing in cold air causes
sudden movement of fluid within the microscopic tubes. This fluid
movement irritates the nerve within the tooth and triggering pain.
Frequent use of acidic beverages and foods, including soft drinks
and citrus juices, can cause erosion of the protective hard enamel,
exposing sensitive surfaces. Exposure to strong stomach acid
from eating disorders and medical conditions, such as Bulemia
and Acid Reflux, respectively, can dissolve the enamel and create
sensitivity.
Q: Can Tooth
Sensitivity affect my
lifestyle?
A: Yes! Pain from
sensitive teeth can
change your eating,
drinking, and breathing
habits. For example, that
spoonful of ice cream, or
swig of your favorite cold beverage can trigger sensitivity pain.
Q: How common is Tooth Sensitivity?
A. Very! Sensitivity is one of the most common dental complaints.
40 milllion adults in the United States suffer at some time from
sensitive teeth.
Q: How can I avoid Tooth Sensivity?
A: Avoid certain toothpastes, especially highly abrasive
toothpastes, “tartar control”, and “whitening” toothpastes.
A: Eliminate excessive biting pressures on your teeth. Bite
problems, caused by shifted teeth, malocclusions, or a grinding
/ clenching habit can put traumatic pressures on one or more
teeth. This causes inflammation of the nerve within the tooth,
causing sensitivity pain. Excessive forces can lead to irreversible
damage to the nerve tissues within the tooth, and require root
canal treatment, or loss of the tooth.
Tune in next week for “Tooth Sensitivity Q & A, Part Two”,
including:
What can I do about my sensitive teeth? When is it time
to see the dentist? What can the dentist do to help?

Skips Tips:Skips Tips:Question: I need new golf clubs what is the advantage of having custom clubs made for me and are they more expen-sive? If you are a male 5'9 or 5'10 all the clubs in the big boxstores are made for you. Same if you are a 5'4 female. These are the standards that have been in place since the 1960s.If you are taller or shorter than these standards you have to change your swing to fit the clubs. If you are taller you must bend over more to compensate. If you are shorter you will have to grip down on the clubs which will cost you distance. Also buying a set off the rack you get whatever grip happens to be on the clubs from the factory. You prob-ably need smaller or larger grips to fit the size of your hands. the grip is a very important part of your golf swing they must feel good to you. With custom clubs you get the correct length, the right weight, the best size grip and with us a free swing analysis. All of this for about 50% HALF OF what you would pay at a big box store. We take the time to meas-ure your swing speed to get the correct stiffness of the shafts for your swing. We have you try different size grips until you find the one that feels right to you. Then you choose then golf heads that are the most appealing to you. Put all this together and you have custom clubs that fit you all for about 50% the cost of off the rack clubs.

529 Plan Can Help with College Fund-
ing and Estate-planning Consid-
erations
Now that another school year is drawing to a close, your young children are a step closer to the day when they’ll be heading off to college. Of course, as you’re prob-ably aware, higher education doesn’t come cheap — and the costs seem to continuously climb. You can help your children — or even your grandchildren — meet these expenses by investing in a 529 plan. And this college savings vehi-cle offers estate-planning benefits.
As a college funding vehicle, a 529 plan offers some significant benefits. When you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (Keep in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. However, 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor. And the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous; while these limits vary by state, many plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. Plus, a 529 plan is flexible: If the child, grandchild or other beneficiary decides against college, you can transfer the unused funds to someone else, tax and penalty free.
Now, let’s turn to a 529 plan’s estate-planning benefits. If you think that you may need to reduce the size of your taxable estate, and you also want to create a legacy you may be able to enjoy during your lifetime, you may find that the 529 plan offers a solution for you. When you establish and contribute to a 529 plan, the assets leave your estate — but they don’t leave your control. If your named beneficiary decides against college and you don’t have another family member to whom you can transfer the account — or if you simply change your mind about funding the 529 plan — you can get your money back at any time, although, as mentioned above, you’ll have to pay taxes, and possibly a 10% IRS penalty, on the earnings.
Your contributions to a 529 plan also qualify for the $13,000 an-nual gift tax exclusion, so you can give large amounts each year without incurring the gift tax.
In the investment world, you can find many vehicles that can help you make progress toward one goal. But it’s far less common to find something that may give you a boost toward two. And when the two goals are helping a child or grandchild go to college and lowering the value of your taxable estate — while still maintaining control of your assets — you’ve got an investment worth consider-ing. So consult with your tax and financial advisors to determine if a 529 plan is right for you. And if it is, think about taking action soon, because the more years you can contribute to a 529 plan, the better the outlook for both your future student and your estate plans.
Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should con-sult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor regard-ing your situation.

My kids and I love to shop for our summer produce at Farmers’ Markets. The produce is perfectly ripe, usually picked just a day or two before the event. We can meet the farmers who grew the food and get tips on preparing it. When produce is grown and sold locally, the money stays in our community, stimulating local economy.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring your own bags, put on sunscreen, and bring water. Many stands don’t accept credit cards, so stop at the ATM on your way.

On June 8, 632, in Saudi Arabia, Muhammad, founder of Islam, dies in the arms of Aishah, his third wife. In 610, in a cave north of Mecca, Muhammad had a vision in which he heard God com-mand him to become the Arab prophet of the “true religion.” He began having religious revelations, which he collected as the Qur’an.
On June 5, 1933, the United States goes off the gold standard, a monetary system in which currency is backed by gold. The Great Depression of the 1930s had frightened the public into hoarding gold. Roosevelt ordered all gold coins and gold cer-tificates in denominations of more than $100 turned in for other money.
On June 4, 1942, the Battle of Midway -- one of the most deci-sive U.S. victories against Japan during World War II -- begins. During the four-day sea-and-air battle, the U.S. Pacific Fleet succeeded in destroying four Japanese aircraft carriers while losing only one of its own.
On June 9, 1956, one of the world’s top-selling crime novel-ists, Patricia Cornwell, best known for her forensic pathologist character Dr. Kay Scarpetta, is born in Miami. Cornwell’s first novel, “Postmortem,” was released in 1990.
On June 7, 1962, the banking institution Credit Suisse opens the first drive-through bank in Zurich, Switzerland. The drive-through featured eight glass pavilions and a sensor on the ground that activated a light trail that directed drivers to the next available bay.
On June 6, 1981, more than 500 passengers are killed when their train plunges into the Baghmati River in India. The rail ac-cident was caused by an engineer who braked too hard to keep from hitting a cow that was crossing the tracks over a bridge. Seven cars derailed into the river.
On June 10, 1979, actor Paul Newman roars into second place in the 47th 24 Hours of Le Mans, the famous sports-car endur-ance race held annually in Le Mans, France. In 1969, Newman starred as a race-car driver in the movie “Winning,” performing many of the high-speed scenes himself without a stunt double.

Man's Age, as Determined by a Trip to Home Depot
You are in the middle of some kind of project around the house --.Mowing the lawn, putting in a new fence, painting the living room or whatever. You are hot and sweaty, covered in dust, lawn clip-pings, dirt or paint. You have your old work clothes on. You know the outfit -- shorts with the hole in the front, old T-shirt with a stain from who-knows-what and an old pair of tennis shoes.
Right in the middle of this great home improvement project you realize you need to run to Home Depot to get something to help complete the job.
Depending on your age you might do the following:
In your 20's:Stop what you are doing. Shave, take a shower, blow dry your hair, brush your teeth, floss and put on clean clothes. Check yourself in the mirror and flex. Add a dab of your favorite cologne because you never know, you just might meet some hot chick while standing in the checkout lane. And you went to school with the pretty girl running the reg-ister.
In your 30's:Stop what you are doing, put on clean shorts and shirt. Change shoes. You married the hot chick so no need for much else. Wash your hands and comb your hair. Check yourself in the mirror. Still got it. Add a shot of your favorite cologne to cover the smell. The cute girl running the register is the kid sister to someone you went to school with.
In your 40's:Stop what you are doing. Put on a sweatshirt that is long enough to cover the hole in the crotch of your shorts. Put on different shoes and a hat. Wash your hands. Your bottle of Brute Cologne is almost empty so you don't want to waste any of it on a trip to Home Depot. Check yourself in the mirror and do more sucking in than flexing.
The hot young thing running the register is your daughter's age and you feel weird thinking she is spicy.
In your 50's:Stop what you are doing. Put on a hat; wipe the dirt off your hands onto your shirt. Change shoes be-cause you don't want to get dog crap in your new sports car. Check yourself in the mirror and you swear not to wear that shirt anymore because it makes you look fat.
The Cutie running the register smiles when she sees you coming and you think you still have it. Then you remember the hat you have on is from Bubba's Bait & Beer Bar and it says, 'I Got Worms.'
In your 60's:Stop what you are doing. No need for a hat any-more. Hose the dog crap off your shoes. The mir-ror was shattered when you were in your 50's. You hope you have underwear on so nothing hangs out the hole in your pants. Don't bother to shave, wash your hands or change your shirt because you know you still got it!! ..... somewhere .
The girl running the register may be cute, but you don't have your glasses on so you are not sure.
