TIDBITS® GOES TO WORK WITH
SERVICE ANIMALSby Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits examines “man’s best friend” and other ani-mals that go the extra mile serving humans. • Many service animals serve only one person in their service lives. A dog may be trained to help a blind or deaf person and stay with that person for about 10 years, usu-ally until the dog dies or becomes incapable of serving because of health problems. • Service dogs trained for police work serve many people by protecting the public from criminals who may seek to harm others with bombs, drugs or other evil actions. • Dogs trained to serve in the military are extremely well trained and reliable members who serve alongside their comrades. Much of the work done by animals for the military is classified. It is known that the U.S. military has used pigeons, horses and chickens as well as dol-phins, beluga whales, sea lions and other marine mam-mals and, of course, dogs. These animals have all served honorably to reduce risk to humans. • According to the U.S. Department of Defense, there about 3,000 dogs have worked as sentries, detecting bombs and land mines and performing search, rescue and recovery. Many of those animals have been on tour in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years turn the page for more!

SERVICE ANIMALS (continued):• Military dogs are trained in San Antonio, Texas, at the Military Working Dog Center at Lackland Air Force Base. German shepherds, Dutch shep-herds and Belgian Malinois are the most common breeds used. The military purchases some of its dogs from breeders, but most are from its own breeding program. • When the Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Lad-en’s Pakistan compound on May 2, 2011, four of the first feet on the ground were those of Cairo, a well-trained Belgian Malinois. When President Obama had a private meeting with the SEAL team, the only one of the super-secret team whose name was revealed was Cairo, the war dog. • The lighter, more compact Belgian Malinois breed is considered the best for operations un-dertaken by SEAL teams, such as tandem para-chute jumping and rappelling. Dogs like Cairo are trained to detect and identify both hostile and/or hiding humans and explosives. The dogs are about twice as fast as their most physically fit SEAL companions. • Like other members of the SEALs, Cairo was equipped with super-strong, flexible body armor and high-tech equipment that included “doggles.” Doggles are specially designed dog goggles equipped with night-vision and infrared capabil-ity that allow dogs to see body heat even through concrete walls. • The hi-tech dog gear comes from a mom-and-pop business in Winnipeg, Manitoba. K9 Storm, Inc., has a worldwide reputation for designing and manufacturing what is probably the best body ar-mor available for military and police dogs. Work-ing dogs in 15 countries use their K9 Storm body armor.• Some amazing information released from the Pentagon in October 2010 revealed that after six years and $19 billion spent in developing the ulti-mate bomb-detector technology, dogs are still the most accurate! Detection using the most advanced equipment, like drones and aerial detectors, yield-ed a 50-percent success rate. When a dog was in-volved, that rate rose 30 percent. Now that’s some serious sniffing!
• Some other highly trained dogs that help keep our nation safe are the detector dogs trained to safeguard American agriculture. The National De-tector Dog Training Center (NDDTC) in Newnan, Georgia, trains dogs and officers as teams to pre-vent pests and agricultural diseases from coming into the United States through airports, postal fa-cilities, cargo warehouses, international borders and seaports.

Mosquitoes – a Looming Threat!
Heartworm disease in dogs and cats is on the rise in Colorado. Infected domestic and wild canines carry the disease (the reservoir) and the mosquitoes spread it (the vector) through their bite in search of a blood meal. The Colorado mosquito/insects have become major health threats for many common diseases – examples: West Nile virus and Heartworm disease.
Heartworm disease in dogs is preventable and if your dog gets infected the disease is treatable. Blood testing first before putting your dog on the preventative medication is highly recommended. If your dog comes down with the disease an effective treatment exists. In Colorado the coyote and fox are the primary host/reservoirs that serve to infect other secondary species: cats, raccoons, bears, etc. and in rare instances – humans.
Heartworm disease in the cat is a completely different story. There are less accurate diagnostic tests to detect the disease and there is no effective treatment for cats once they get the disease. 50% of infected cats will die within two years. Sudden death without any warning or variable signs of a chronic cough, trouble breathing, weight loss, lethargy, and vomiting may be seen with feline heartworm disease. These clinical signs develop slowly over a 6-9 month period and mimic many common diseases seen in the cat, especially asthma. A new approach in treating the deadly secondary signs is improving the odds of your cat surviving heartworm disease but prevention is the key! Indoor cats are at risk because mosquitoes go everywhere.
Safe and effective preventive medications are available. Year round protection (a full 12 months) is recommended in Colorado. Preventive medication is easy to use – chewable tablets for dogs and a safe liquid applied to the skin for cats once every 30 days. If you have mosquitoes around your house at any time of the year your cats and dogs are at risk. “An ounce of prevention” is best because there is no treatment/cure if your cat gets infected. Call Cat Specialist and talk to our nurses if you have questions about feline heartworm disease and start now – 303-663-2287.

Jade has been known to mankind for some 7000years, but in prehistoric times was known more for its toughness and was used for weapons and tools. As early as 3000 BC jade was employed inChina as a royal gem and has enjoyed a long history in the art and culture of the Chinese empire. Over the years the people of Asia have placed a greater importance on jade than any other culture. The ancient Mayas, Aztecs and Olmecs of Central America also valued jade – even more
highly than gold. The Maoris of New Zealand continue to use jade in weapons and cult instruments, a practice that began in early times. In ancient Egypt jade was admired as the stone of love, inner peace, harmony and balance.
Other religions and cultures have also deemed jade as a protecting force and good fortune. Today this gem is believed to be a symbol of goodness, beauty, justice, wisdom, compassion, and courage, not to mention, female-erotic!Jade’s subtle luster along with its naturally tough-ness may be why it has been so appreciated around the world and down through the centu-ries. It comes in many fine nuances of green, but also in shades of white, black, gray, yellow, orange and even in delicate violet tones.

Attic Vents Present a Pesky Problem
Q: Recently, I found that sparrows had built a nest not just under the eaves of my house, but inside the crawlspace un-der the roof. I had pest control remove the nest, and now I plan to seal up any gaps or openings under the eaves or leading into the attic. How best do I go about this? -- John C., Framingham, Mass.
A: You don’t want to seal up every opening in the attic and crawlspace area, as many of the openings play an important role in maintaining the health of your home. The spaces between the exterior and interior living area of a house -- attics, crawlspaces, the gaps between the outside wall and the interior framing and drywall -- make up what’s known as a home’s “envelope.” Airflow into and out of this envelope is as important as the other components you’ll of-ten find inside, such as insulation.Home plans provide for open vents spaced around the ex-terior of the house, which allow air to flow naturally into and out of the envelope. This constantly moving air keeps the space between your living area and the outside of the house from getting too hot or too cold, and more impor-tantly, keeps moisture from becoming a problem. Excess humidity within the envelope can, over time, cause some very expensive problems, including mold.Of course, you don’t want pests using these vents to move into your home, because they, too, can cause quite a bit of damage. To protect the crawlspace and the health of your home, find and note all of the openings and vents in the eaves and sof-fits, the crawlspace and attic, and the basement or lower crawlspace of your home. Note the condition of each: is a vent in place? Is there just an opening with no protective vent? Or does the opening look like a damaged area rather than an intentionally placed opening? Once you have that diagram, then you can purchase what you need to install proper vent covers that will enable airflow while discour-aging pests, and repair any exterior damage before interior damage becomes a problem.Even with protective measures in place, you still will need to inspect the area at least twice a year, typically spring and fall, for evidence of animals or other pests trying to make your home their home.
HOME TIP: What’s the difference between eaves and sof-fits? Eaves sit at the edge of a sloped roof; soffits are the flat underside of a roof’s overhang between the exterior wall and the eaves.

will allow GreenSheen to recycle, clean and re-package leftover latex paint that has been donated to Habitat and may otherwise not be so easily marketed. By recycling, cleaning and repackaging these paints, they intend to not only be able to provide their customers with a more consistent, high quality selection of paints good for use inside and out and available in a wide range of designer inspired colors, but to do so in a more marketable and thereby profitable way. Every dollar that this non-profit makes is a dollar that can be put to good use while also providing an environmental service to every Resident of the State of Colorado.
GreenSheen will continue to accept leftover latex paint from homeowners, business owners, municipalities and institutions at their Centennial, CO. based recycling facility as well as retail their quality products from this same site.
If you’re considering disposing of the leftover latex paint that has built up in your garage, basement or closets, before you contribute to polluting the ground water surrounding Colorados landfills, first consider recycling with either GreenSheen or Habitat for Humanity.

Dr Burgner
Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.
Q: What are porcelain veneers?A: Porcelain veneers thin, durable shells designed to cover the front of the tooth. They are often used to lighten stains, close gaps, and even alter crooked of malformed teeth. You can change the shape, color, and length of your teeth using veneers. They are made of porcelain, and are durable, stain-resistant, natural-looking, and easy to maintiain. Veneers are custom-fitted to your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel and bonding the veneer to your
teeth using a safe, high tech polymer resin.
Q: Will I need a shot? A: Porcelain Veneers require little or no shots, and are painless.
Q: What’s the difference between Porcelain Veneers and Crowns?A: Porcelain Veneers cover the front of the tooth; crowns cover the entire tooth. Veneers provide a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color, size, or shape. .
Q: Can Veneers close gaps in my smile?A. Yes! Porcelain Veneers can be the ideal choice for closing gaps and spaces, and improving the appearance of the front teeth.
Q. What’s in a smile? A. Is it happy, beautiful / handsome, straight, white – or discolored, worn, chipped, spaced-out, tired, and embarrassing?

• One of the wonderful things about this program is that the NDDCT actually gets its dogs through animal shelters and animal rescues as well as through owner donations. It is important for dogs in this program to be comfortable and non-threat-ening when working around people in crowded places like airports. The NDDCT currently trains beagles and beagle mixes for airports and Lab-rador retrievers and Lab mixes for border patrol work and for warehouses and postal facilities. • Occasionally Jack Russell terriers are also used by the NDDCT, mainly to work in Guam find-ing brown tree snakes. (Ewww!) The snakes are “a dangerous threat to the ecology and economy of Guam.” Accidentally introduced to Guam in the 1940s or early 1950s, the snakes cause power outages and have eradicated most of Guam’s na-tive forest birds. • The characteristics the NDDCT looks for in dogs that will serve in the “Agriculture Beagle Brigade” are age (1-3 years old); bold, curious and friendly personalities; and a love of food! If after some testing and training, a dog is not deemed appropriate for the work, it is put up for adoption.• Other very important service animals are Assis-tance Dogs. There are three types: guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired, hearing dogs for the deaf and hard of hearing and service dogs for people with disabilities other than those related to vision or hearing. Guide dogs for the blind have been around and formally trained for over 70 years, while the other programs are newer. • A revised definition of “service animal” was recently passed in the United States, effective March 15, 2011: “Service animal means any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a dis-ability, including a physical, sensory, psychiat-ric, intellectual or other mental disability. Other species of animals, whether wild or domestic, trained or untrained, are not service animals for the purposes of this definition.” This definition is part of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It provides federal protection for service animals to accompany their person into public places. Ser-vice animals are not pets; they are working dogs. (Miniature horses are permitted under specific conditions.)• Service dogs are highly trained to meet the needs of the people they serve. Any breed can be used as a service dog. They are trained to stan-dards established by dog trainers, animal behav-iorists, people with disabilities and veterinarians. A service dog is an invaluable addition to the life of its person, helping them gain freedom and in-dependence.

Are You Prepared for Long-term
Care Costs Like everyone else, you hope to remain physically and financially independent your entire
life. And you may well achieve this goal. Nonetheless, the future is not ours to see, so you’ll want to prepare yourself for as many contingencies as possible — one of which is the high cost of long-term care.
As you may know, long-term care pri-marily refers to nursing home expenses, but it also includes services provided in your own home. In either case, though, it could be expensive.
The national average rate for a private room in a nursing home was more than $87,000 per year in 2011, according to the 2011 MetLife Market Survey of Long-Term Care Costs. The same survey found that the average private-pay hourly rates for home health aides and homemaker companion services were $21 and $19, respectively.
With luck, of course, you won’t need to worry about these types of expenses. But consider this: People who reach age 65 have a 40% chance of entering a nursing home, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And about 10% of those who enter a nursing home will stay there five or more years.
Clearly, if you take no steps to prepare yourself for the potentially devastating costs of an extended nursing home stay, you could be jeopardizing the assets you’ve worked so hard to accumulate. Even worse, if you run through your money, you might end up creating a financial and emotional burden for your grown children.
Unfortunately, many people assume that a federal or state gov-ernment program will help them pay for their long-term care ex-penses. However, Medicare pays only a small portion of nursing home costs, and to be eligible for Medicaid, you would likely have to divest yourself of most of your financial assets. Consequently, you’ll probably need to find another way to pay for long-term care.
Fortunately, there are investment or protection vehicles designed specifically to help you meet long-term care expenses. Your finan-cial advisor can help you pick the option that’s most appropriate for your individual situation.
Having the ability to pay for long-term care is obviously impor-tant. But other issues may also enter the picture. For example, if you need to enter a nursing home, you may be suffering from a physical or mental disability that might prevent you from han-dling your own affairs. This impairment could prove disastrous to your finances — which is why you can’t afford to take that type of chance. Instead, consult with your legal advisor to determine if you can benefit from a durable power of attorney — a document that lets you delegate your financial decisions to a relative, close friend or anyone else you might choose.
None of us like to think about spending time in a nursing home or needing round-the-clock care in our own homes. However, life is unpredictable. But even if you can’t avoid the need for long-term care, you can take steps to help reduce the financial strain it can cause you and your family.

DC Dolphin Cheer makes a splash at MegaJAM!
Congratulations to DC Dolphin Cheer STARS for a 1st place win in the Youth Level 1 Rec Cheer at the Mega JAM competition at the Denver Coliseum held on February 4, 2012The DC Dolphin “ELITE” squad of 22 girls respectively placed 2nd in the Junior level 2 Rec Cheer. They were also acclaimed for winning the Sportsmanship award at this years’ competition. Chad Lemon, JAMfest representative, described how this prestigious title is awarded to the winning squad. “We instruct our staff to “secretly” watch the teams and coaches all day long. Any team that is caught doing a random act of sportsmanship is put on a list with what they did. At the end of an awards session, the core staff votes on who gets the award based on what our staff saw. If they won the award, they obviously did something great! America’s Best & The JAM Brands places a large emphasis on Sportsmanship and considers it a key element in our events, our industry, and our sport. We always like to recognize teams and athletes on great sportsmanship.” Congratulations DC Dolphin ELITE, you are an inspiration to your sport and our youth sports community. We are very proud of you !

Good Christian Joke
Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argu-ment about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering.
Finally fed up, God said, 'THAT'S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours, and from those results, I will judge who does the better job.'
So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away.
They moused.
They faxed.
They e-mailed.
They e-mailed with attachments.
They downloaded.
They did spreadsheets!
They wrote reports.
They created labels and cards.
They created charts and graphs.
They did some genealogy reports.
They did every job known to man.
Jesus worked with heavenly efficiency and Satan was faster than hell.
Then, ten minutes before their time was up, light-ning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, rain poured, and, of course, the power went off.
Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed eve-ry curse word known in the underworld.
Jesus just sighed.
Finally the electricity came back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming:
'It's gone! It's all GONE! 'I lost everything when the power went out!'
Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours of work.
Satan observed this and became irate.
'Wait!' he screamed. 'That's not fair! He cheated! How come he has all his work and I don't have any?'
God just shrugged and said,
JESUS SAVES...
