BRIDGES (continued):• Another pedestrian bridge that provides amazing views of Singapore is the Helix Bridge, opened in April 2010. It is an ultra-modern, curved double-helix bridge that links the Marina Centre with Marina Bay in view of the Singapore Flyer (Ferris Wheel). Double helix is a term from biochemistry describing “the spiral arrangement of the two complementary strands of DNA.” The bridge is part of a pedestrian loop around the bay that adds to the appeal of the city, especially when lit up at night. Singapore claims this is the first bridge of its kind, however, there are two similar bridges in Seattle and London that were both opened in 2004.• The world’s largest biotechnology company, Amgen, has a double-helix design skybridge at its massive waterfront campus in Seattle, Washington. The $10 million structure is an architectural gem.• Also named Helix Bridge is a footbridge at the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal in London. The canal is the longest single canal in the United Kingdom, linking London and Birmingham. This “helix” bridge retracts like a corkscrew to allow for the passage of boats. • Two other bridges in the Paddington Basin area were installed in 2004 in a large, ongoing redevelopment. The Station Bridge is a space-age glass and steel structure with a semi-transparent screen and cantilevered steel deck. It connects the rail station with new development in the area. • The third bridge is truly a marvel. Named the Rolling Bridge, this drawbridge lets boats through in a unique way. The bridge span curls up into an octagonal shape that sits at the water’s edge, resembling a hamster wheel.• The first pedestrian-only bridge crossing the River Thames in London in more than a century is affectionately called the “Wobbly Bridge.” Two days after its opening in 2000, it was closed due to unexpected lateral vibration. In other words, it wobbled, and people were frightened! Following repairs, it reopened in 2002. Now, it is a popular London walking path. The real name for the bridge is the London Millennium Footbridge.• Another big city downtown improvement involving a bridge is the 130-foot-long (40 m) Denver Millennium Footbridge that opened in 2002. A distinguishing feature of the bridge is the tilted, 200-foot-tall (61 m) mast that resembles that of a sailboat, a feature that has become iconic to lower downtown Denver. The bridge goes over a railroad easement 25 feet (7.6 m) above street level and is an extension of the popular 16th Street pedestrian mall. • A bridge with breathtaking views of the Colorado River served as a route for automobiles and trucks for 66 years. The original Navajo Bridge was

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season – Prevention is Key!

Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com

Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats!

The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

The Link Between Arthritis Pain and Weather

Changes in weather are well documented to have an effect on how arthritis signs are felt by humans and cats. Surveys of humans show as many as 93% of arthritis sufferers believe that weather affects their pain levels and 63% feel that weather is the main factor in their arthritis pain. Humans with arthritis often claim to be able to predict the weather based on their pain levels when the weather becomes inclement.

What weather factors increase arthritic symptoms (swelling of inflamed joints and stretching of joint linings and joint capsules)?

Changes in barometric pressure, especially falling (low) pressure

Changes in temperature, especially falling, low temperatures

High or increasing relative humidity Precipitation (rain and snow) Storms (a combination of aggravating

causes – for example: chill, damp weather when the barometric pressure is rising or falling.)

In addition, the spread of contagious diseases has a weather connection. In cats, upper respiratory diseases, feline distemper (panleukopenia), and feline leukemia (FeLV) & aids (FIV) have a link to weather and social activity.

Sunshine with rising barometric pressure

Low indoor humidity dries the mucous membranes

Changes in weather causing stress Increases in population of

neighborhood cats Increases in outdoor stray cat

contacts

Cats are very sensitive to environmental change and can forecast earthquakes, storms, pollution alerts, tidal waves and many changes that affect our daily lives.A cat’s survival sense is very keen and behaviorists are beginning to study this.

Are you from Colorado winter statistic:98% OF AMERICANS SCREAM BEFORE GOING IN THE DITCH ON A SLIPPERY ROAD.

THE OTHER 2% ARE FROM COLORADO AND THEY SAY,"HOLD MY SODA AND WATCH THIS."***************************************Now, you're from Colorado if.........You eat ice cream in the winter.

It snows 5 inches and you don't expect school to be cancelled.

You have no accent at all, but can hear other people's. And then you make fun of them. "Humid" is over 25%.

Your sense of direction is: Toward the mountains and away from the mountains. You say "the interstate" and everybody knows which one.

You think that May is a totally normal month for a blizzard.

You buy your flowers to set out on Mother's day, but try and hold off planting them until just before Father's day.

You grew up planning your Halloween costumes around your coat.

You know what the Continental Divide is.

You went to Casa Bonita as a kid, AND as an adult.

You've gone off-roading in a vehicle that was never intended for such activities.

You always know the elevation of where you are.

You wake up to a beautiful, 80 degree day and you wonder if it's gonna snow later.

You don't care that some company renamed it, the Broncos still play at Mile High Stadium!!! Every movie theater has military and student discounts.

You know you're talking to a fellow Coloradoan whenthey call it "Elitches," not ""Six Flags."

Your two favorite teams are the Broncos and whoeveris beating the crap out of the Raiders.

When people back East tell you they have mountainsin their state too, you just laugh.

Nephrite

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Nephrite is part of the Jade family and the term is used to distinguish it from jadite. Though similar in properties, nephrite is both more rare and more durable. That is why it was used in primitive times to fashion tools such as knives, clubs, and axes and used in modern times to adorn the body when worn as a gemstone. When considering nephrite whether for jewelry or as a carving, remember that there are many gemstones that imitate nephrite. But the problem is they are not as durable. So be sure and stay with a reputable jeweler or carver when shopping for items made of nephrite. Because nephrite is relatively abundant worldwide, it is not a costly gemstone. The price of nephrite carvings, however, can vary significantly depending on the quality of the artisan. The Chinese have prized the nephrite variety of jade more than any other gem-stone. For over 3000 years they carved flat discs with a central hole, termed pi, from nephrite to worship heaven.

opened in 1929, replacing a ferry that crossed the river. In 1995, the bridge was restricted to pedestrian use due to the opening of a new, stronger bridge for vehicles. The bridges are side by side and look very similar. They are located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona; a Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center is there as well.• Ogunquit, Maine, has a footbridge that crosses the Ogunquit River to a section of beach called “Footbridge Beach.” Ogunquit Beach has been maintained as a public park since 1938 and is one of two municipally owned beaches in Maine. • The Royal Gorge Bridge is 1,053 feet (321 m) above the Arkansas River in Canon City, Colorado. The bridge will support more than 2 million pounds (907 metric tons) and is open to foot traffic as well as automobiles. For those brave enough to walk across, there is a walkway made of 1,292 planks of decking, with about 250 replaced annually. Built in 1929, it is listed on the National Historic Register. • The original Capilano Suspension Bridge over the Capilano River in Vancouver, British Columbia, was built in 1889. This footbridge is 230 feet (70 m) above the river and is 450 feet (137 m) across. It has been rebuilt several times and is now part of a 27-acre park that is one of the top tourist attractions in British Columbia. • Canada has another, even longer and higher, suspended footbridge. This bridge, 600 feet (182 m) long and 152 feet (45 m) high, is over Eagle Canyon in northwestern Ontario. While not as well known as the Capilano Bridge, it does attract over 30,000 brave visitors per year.• While not intended as a footbridge, the Bosphorus Bridge in Turkey over the Bosphorus Strait, was the site of a famous tennis match in 2005. Played between Venus Williams and Turkish star Ipek Senoglu it was the first-ever competition to take place between two continents. The 4,954 foot-long (1.5 km) Bosphorus Bridge was completed in 1973 after many years of consideration. It links Europe and Asia.• The next time you cross a footbridge, whether short or long, wide or high, think about the engineering and architectural work that went into its design and construction. Bridges are pretty amazing structures.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

WILMA RUDOLPHWilma Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940, in Clarksville, Tennessee, and weighed only 4.5 pounds (2 kg). She was unhealthy from the start of life. But as the seventeenth of 20 children, she had a large family around to encourage her growth and success. • As a tiny baby, Rudolph overcame scarlet fever and pneumonia when many died of the diseases. When she was four she contracted polio, the dreaded crippling disease that devastated so many lives at the time. It left her with a crippled leg, and doctors said she would never walk.• Tiny Rudolph had parents who would not give up on her. They had also been told that they could not raise a big family on the small income of a railroad porter and a maid, yet they were doing it. • Rudolph’s mother drove her daughter to a hospital in Nashville for tests. The doctors said that with years of daily massages her leg “might” be saved. The “might” was all her mother needed to hear. The family massaged her leg daily, and weekly trips were made to Nashville for other treatments. • Rudolph was almost walking by the time she was six. By eight, she was fitted with a leg brace and then a special high-topped shoe. At this time she was finally able to start school. • Rudolph’s older brothers played basketball with a peach basket mounted on a pole in their yard, and she loved to join them. She was very determined and would play for hours. One day when her mom came home from work, she noticed her daughter playing without her special shoe. She was playing barefoot. She never wore the special shoe again and was walking normally like everyone else. • Rudolph played basketball in high school and set a Burt High School scoring record of 803 points in 25 games. Coach Ed Temple of Tennessee State University saw her play basketball but was more impressed by her speed than her scoring ability. He recruited her to join his summer “track camp.” • The camp was the start of a fantastic track career for Rudolph. She worked hard and qualified for the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, during her senior year in high school. She was part of the 400-meter relay team that won a bronze medal. This was after only one year of training.

STRANGE BUT TRUEBy Samantha Weaver

¥ It was French writer, artist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau who made the following sage observation: “The greatest masterpiece in literature is only a dictionary out of order.”

¥ If you were in or near Springfield, Mo., at the end of April, I hope you took the opportunity to attend a popular local festival: the Typewriter Toss. Every year on April 22 -- Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secre-taries Day), appropriately -- a local radio station sponsors the event, in which contestants are raised in a lift truck to a height of 50 feet, then compete to see who can land a typewriter closest to the bull’s-eye painted on the ground below.

¥ Those who study such things say that sharks burp. Evi-dently it’s a mechanism for regulating the depth at which they swim.

¥ Technically speaking, the green pepper is a fruit.

¥ In the early 20th century, a wealthy Russian living in Odessa died but had no children to inherit his estate. In-stead, he left his 4-million ruble fortune to his four nieces. This may not seem unusual, but he did include an odd pro-vision in his will: Each of the girls had to serve for one year as a farm girl, a washerwoman or a chambermaid before she saw any of the money. They did as the will instructed, and during that year of service each received hundreds of proposals of marriage.

¥ The Sahara Desert is spreading southward at a rate of slightly less than one-third of a mile each year.

Are You Accident Prone?

Here are some simple steps you can do to help prevent household accidents. Even if you aren’t accident prone, these are helpful in preventing a costly hospital bill.

• Install light switches at the top and bottom of staircases. Dark stairways are notorious for injuries.

• Don’t leave objects in the way of exits or passageways. This includes things like boxes, furniture or other things that might cause you to trip.

• Make sure you can see where you’re walking if you’re carrying something. Don’t just assume

your pathway is clear because it was an hour ago.

• Secure rugs by using rubber matting or double-sided tape if the rugs don’t have slip-resistant backing.

• Place decals or stickers on sliding glass doors to prevent people from thinking it’s an open door and walking into it.

• Clean up spills immediately to prevent someone from slipping and getting hurt.

• Install a rubber mat or adhesive strip on the bathtub floor. This will help prevent falls from happening in the bathtub.

• Night-lights are a great way to help night time accidents. A dark bedroom is an easy place to trip and get hurt.

• When using a power tool, it’s important to wear shatterproof safety glasses. Even if you wear eyeglasses, get a pair of safety glasses that fit over your regular glasses.

• Don’t store inedible products with your food. A quick trip for a snack could result in grabbing the wrong thing.

• Don’t save medicine. Flush all leftover medicine down the toilet. Only the doctor knows what medicine should be used if medicine is needed.

Can You Save for Retirement and Education?

The school year is coming to a close, which means that if you have young children, you are now one year closer to college days — and college bills. At the same time, you are moving nearer to your own retirement. Can you save for col-lege while you put money away for

retirement? Yes — but it will take planning, patience and discipline.

Your first step is to be aware of the challenges you will face. As you know, the financial crisis of 2008 and early 2009 took a bite out of just about everyone’s retirement portfolio. And even though the markets have bounced back strongly, you might still have some ground to make up in your 401(k), Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or other accounts. At the same time, budgetary pressures may lead to reductions in Pell Grants and other feder-ally backed financial aid to students, so you may need to provide more assistance to your children than you once might have thought.

To deal with these challenges and help yourself make progress toward your college/retirement objectives, con-sider the following moves:

Establish some priorities. How much should you save and invest for retirement versus college? Also, how much of the college costs would you like to cover: 100%, 50% or perhaps a set dollar amount? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone — you’ll have to establish priorities based on your preferences and family situation. But once you’ve set these priorities, you’ll have some guiding prin-ciples to govern your savings and investment decisions.Put time on your side. The earlier you start saving for both your retirement and your children’s college educa-tion, the better your chances of reaching your goals. Choose the right investment vehicles. You may want to work with a financial advisor to choose the appropriate mix of investments for your needs. But in general, it’s a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement ac-count. Your contributions are generally made with pre-tax dollars, and your earnings can grow tax deferred. And whether or not you have access to a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, you can probably also contrib-ute to a traditional IRA, which offers tax-deferred earn-ings, or a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’ve reached age 59½. To save for college, you may want to explore a 529 plan, which also provides tax-free earnings, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses.* Keep investing. The financial markets will always move up and down — so in some months, you might not like what you see on your investment statements. But the most successful investors keep investing in good times and bad. If you decide to take a “timeout” from invest-ing and head to the sidelines during a market slump, you could miss out on the next rally.By following these suggestions, you can keep moving forward toward two special times in your life: when your children attain the higher education that can help them succeed in life and when you can enjoy the retirement for which you’ve worked so hard.

As Christians, we are to be people of faith. In fact Heb. 11:6 tells us that, “without faith, it is impossible to please Him”. God is a ‘faith-God’ so if we want to be pleasing to Him, we in turn must be people of faith. But what is faith? Is it just something that we magically conjure up in our minds and then believe will happen, or is there possibly more to it. The Bible tells us in Heb 11:1 that, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” KJV So the first thing we see is that faith is now. It is not about what happened yesterday, what might happen tomorrow, it is now, it is real, and it is active. And we see that it is the substance of things we hope for. The word substance is something that is real, something that has actual existence. We could say it this way, faith is the foundation, the bedrock, the corner stone of things we hope for. But, Bible hope is something entirely different than what the world would tell us it is. Hope is a confident expectation that God is able to do that which he has promised. We have joy and confidence that God is able to do that which His Word tells us He will do. When we put that all together we see that “Faith is the foundation, the bedrock of our confident expectation in God, wow! That makes me excited, how about you? Faith is the evidence of things not seen. If we were in a court room, we would have to provide evidence of what we are testifying to. It is the exact same thing here. Faith is the proof, it is our conviction, it is the evidence that something really does exist. Where does it exist you might ask? It exists in the spiritual realm. Everything begins in the spiritual realm and then it manifests in the natural realm where we can see it with our five senses. If we could see it to begin with, we would not need to have faith for it, because we already have it. No, truth faith, Biblical faith, calls into being that which is not as though it were. And that pleases God. How did the moon and the stars and the sun come into existence? God spoke. How did the earth and the seas and all the fish and animals come into existence? God spoke. By faith God spoke what was not in the physical realm, and out of the spiritual realm, they came into being. As children of God, you and I can do the same thing. Maybe we will not make planets, but we can by faith speak life over our circumstances, life over our families, life over our finances, life over our health. And when we do, it pleases God. Will you become a God-pleaser today? Join us this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. to find our more and see our ad on this page for directions.

THE POTTY A LITTLE THREE YEAR OLD BOY IS SITTING ON THE TOILET. HIS MOTHER THINKS HE HAS BEEN IN THERE TOO LONG, SO SHE GOES IN TO SEE WHAT'S UP. THE LITTLE BOY IS SITTING ON THE TOILET READING A BOOK. BUT ABOUT EVERY 15 SECONDS OR SO, HE PUTS THE BOOK DOWN, GRIPS ONTO THE TOILET SEAT WITH HIS LEFT HAND AND HITS HIMSELF ON TOP OF HIS HEAD WITH HIS RIGHT HAND.

HIS MOTHER SAYS: "BILLY, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? YOU'VE BEEN IN HERE FOR A WHILE." BILLY SAYS: "I'M FINE, MOMMY. I JUST HAVEN'T GONE POTTY' YET." MOTHER SAYS: "OK, YOU CAN STAY HERE A FEW MORE MINUTES. BUT, BILLY, WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF ON THE HEAD?"

BILLY SAYS: "WORKS FOR KETCHUP."

Shampoo alert!

As I was conditioning my hair in the shower this morning, I took time to read my shampoo bottle. I am in shock! The shampoo I use in the shower that runs down my entire body says "for extra vol-ume and body"! Seriously, why have I not noticed this before? Now I understand why I am so "full-figured"! Tomorrow I am going to start using "Dawn" dish soap. It says right on the label "dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove."

Pictures taken at the right moment!
