When I was younger, I didn’t like “girly” colours as a principle: I thought that as a rugged tomboy, I should only be wearing blues, reds, greens, and blacks. My mother constantly tried to convince me otherwise, but it wasn’t until very recently I found myself donning pastels. Now that spring had rolled around, I am excited to parade my totally new look and wardrobe. Honestly, your outward appearance reflects your inner self, and I’m more than just the girl who wears black tulle 24/7. Happy reading!

Italian labels have always been at the forefront of avant garde fashion, and Etro is one of the world’s best-known Italian luxury brands. The story of Etro begins in 1968, when Gerolamo “Gimmo” Etro, established a prêt-a-porter and haute couture textiles company. The headquarters of the company were located in Milan, where the brand’s famed archives began to take shape in the late 1970s. By 1984, the brand had attained great success for its signature paisley jacquard bags, which made for the ultimate style statement. After more than four decades, Etro produces an acclaimed collection of womenswear, menswear, home décor and perfumes. Today, the family-owned company is run by Veronica Etro, who manages the womenswear collection, and Kean Etro who designs the menswear.

Indeed, very few brands can claim the kind of instant recognition that Etro commands for its signature paisley prints. The motif itself is an ancient one, symbolizing the shoot of the date palm, which itself represents the tree of life. The pattern was utilized in ancient Indian fabrics, and

then adopted later in women’s fabrics. Etro’s inspiration for the paisley print came from its prized collection of about 150 cashmere design shawls dating from 1810 to 1880. Since its inception, Etro continues to explore this singular leitmotif, the versatility of which allows them to introduce new color combinations and textures that the brand is renowned for.

For its Spring Summer 2014 collection, Etro looks to the past for inspiration. Designer Veronica Etro offered a glimpse into her grandmother’s library, with prints from the 1940s. The paisley print was deconstructed, restructured, and collaged into a modern interpretation. Nonchalant elegance was the key, with free-flowing dresses, fluid pants and sinuous scarves that displayed the versatile paisley in all its glory. The color palette was typically summery, evoking clear blue waters, orange sunsets, golden-yellow sands, cheery citrus and feminine pastels including lilac and baby pink. Many of the outfits featured delicate metal embellishments on the placket or pocket, and on the fringes of scarves. The accessories, too, took an embellished route featuring embroidered shoulder bags with metal straps, and etched belts.Every season, Al Ostoura brings the best of Etro to its stores in Kuwait, to suit the tastes of the fashion forward people in Kuwait. The Etro boutiques are located at Thuraya Mall and in the Prestige section at The Avenues Mall. The spacious boutique at Prestige has an area of 225 sq m, with 100 sq m reserved for the women’s section. Tastefully furnished, it is the largest area in the store and includes high-end display counters crafted from oak wood and leather; along with comfortable and well-appointed fitting rooms. The men’s section is equally special with 50 sq m of space allotted to clothing and accessories. The boutique also boasts a furniture section that includes home accessories. The boutique’s carpet mirrors the colors predominant in Etro’s signature fashion collections. In fact, it has been specially

As she upholds her role as Senior Vice President, Head of Wealth Management at Global Investment House, Rasha Al Qenaei talks working life, motherhood, and what it takes to be on top of her game.

If you are part of the growing ranks of mothers with demanding jobs, you learn to juggle work, home and well being. And who better to demonstrate the never-ending cycle of modern motherhood than Rasha Al Qenai, molecular biology major, current Senior Vice President of Global Investment House, and dedicated mother of three?

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Rasha Al-Qenaei and I am a mother of three wonderful kids. My eldest daughter, Danah, is 22, Tareq is 15, and my youngest, Ghalia, just turned 12. I was always interested in genetic engineering, but unfortunately this part of the world does not provide much opportunity for that particular field. The research and development of topics such as molecular biology was very limited, so I decided to change my major to business. I started my MBA in finance in 1998, and I joined Global in 1999. I began as an analyst in corporate finance, and then realized that there is no single department within Global that offers clients the full spectrum of investment products and services, so we created that department back then and called it the Client Relationship Department in 2000, of which I became a founder. After that, I was given the task of heading a team within that new department, and then later on I was given the task of heading the corporate and institutional desk within Global, which meant I dealt with sovereign funds and all the major governmental institutions that were clients of Global. I was promoted to the head of Kuwait Wealth Management in 2008, and in 2011, I was offered to become the head of International Wealth Management. It involved replicating our service-oriented approach and culture to clients all over the world.

How would you describe your climb to the top?

It was no easy task; I believe that working in the private sector allowed for flexibility and innovation because stars are recognized from day one and are supported within the organisation. I was fortunate enough to be recognized for my ambition at the beginning of my career, and I climbed the corporate ladder to where I am today.

Do you think women have a great presence in Kuwait?

Definitely, because we have had women in key positions such as the ministries, the parliament, and we had the first woman president of a university in the Arab world, Faiza Al-Kharafi, heading Kuwait University over 15 years ago. I think Kuwait has always been advanced in the Arab world in terms of empowering women. It is unfortunate that we just recently got our political rights, but I think in the practical world, women were empowered way before that.

Were there any challenges that you faced while working in your field as a woman?

Not once, especially since I am working for an institution that is headed by a woman, Maha Al-Ghunaim. Even outside the workplace, I have never hit the glass ceiling or been faced with discrimination. This has to do with the fact that we are in Kuwait, and we are a progressive nation when it comes to gender. I would say the only time I wish I was a man is when business deals are conducted in the diwaniya. I feel left out of that, but honestly, I have never dealt with discrimination of that sort.

Do you feel you were advantageous in terms of your career?

I think my background was a big driving force that pushed me to where I am. My father treated all his sons and daughters as equals, and he was very encouraging and persistent when it

came to our education. He always encouraged his daughters to prioritize education before the idea of settling down. He rewarded us for our grades as incentive to do our best; I believe he wanted us to get our higher degrees, and put all that education to good use.

Speaking of family, how do you balance out your professional and private life?

I think this question should really have three components, because I can perform well at work and be there for my family. Balancing your family life, your professional life, and your own personal wellbeing as a woman is very important. Once you cease caring for yourself, you really can’t give that much effort and energy to your surroundings. I see women who try to give both career and family 100%, and they lose themselves in the process. Their social lives start to suffer, health issues begin to appear early on as they are handing more stress than they should. And when they do finally take time off for themselves, they feel guilty! Women should be able to take care of themselves just as much as everyone else around them to maintain their wellbeing. Every woman has her own way of unwinding, and it’s a process of trial and error. After about 6 years I found my balance and that can range from something as simple as watching my favorite series to a massage at the spa.

Is the level of stress you now feel inversely proportionate to the length of time you’ve worked at Global?

That would be true in any other field, with the exception of our field as our stress levels are directly linked to what is happening in the financial market. The most stressful period of my career started at the end of 2008 when we witnessed the beginning of the worldwide economic crisis, the aftermath of which we are still dealing with today.

When you were a fresh high school graduate, where did you see yourself in ten years?

I always wanted to study abroad, and I actually got a scholarship to study medicine in Ireland. I was so excited as it meant I had put my foot in the door to start my career in genetic engineering. At the time, while other teenagers had posters of their favourite bands up on their bedroom walls, I had posters of DNA double helixes. Unfortunately, I was very young and my parents weren’t keen on the idea of sending me off to study alone at sixteen, so I went to KU instead. I started med school and I had plans; I wanted to do so much: I wanted to become a prominent name in the medical field and I wanted to contribute to genetic engineering and molecular biology research. In addition to that, I wanted to carry out genetic researches on the Kuwaiti population- which is happening now, but I would have liked to be a part of that.

In spite of your career change, do you still feel fulfilled?

Yes, definitely; in a different way but just as equally. A lot of my ex-colleagues in med school have just now reached the peak of their careers, so I am very pleased with the career I chose.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I see myself in the same field. However, I want to focus more on my children and family, and I look forward to spending more quality time with them. I would have a better work-life balance than I had in the past.

How did Global overcome the challenges brought on by the economic crisis?

In late 2011, we hired a consultancy firm named Evercorp out of New York, whom worked with Global on its second restructuring. Thankfully after a lot of hard work and dedication, Global emerged as a debt-free entity in July 2014

Who are your role models?

In the GCC, I would definitely start with Maha Al-Ghunaim. I think that Faiza Al-Khrafi is a phenomenal woman and I definitely look up to her and her work. Lubna Al-Qasimi is another great role model from the GCC.

What do you want the emerging youths to know today?

First, always work in something you are passionate about. Do not waste your time doing a job you feel is a burden, and find something

that makes you excited to wake up to in the morning. The second thing is that you don’t have to stick to a career path that correlates directly to your degree. Look at me, I studied medicine and now I work in finance. There is no deadline to find what you love to do, but it will come and when it does make sure you follow it. Another thing is I am so impressed with the entrepreneurship of this generation because I did not have that when I was growing up here. One final piece of advice to today’s youth is that: passion and patience are the main components of all success stories.

Eclectic meets chic in the season’s most talked about event: Kuwait Confidential. The bold and brilliant universes, and the compelling, signifi-cant personalities of two remarkable Lebanese designers, Alia Mouzannar and Sarah Beydoun, are celebrated at Dar Al Funoon from Tuesday March 25th to Thursday March 27th. The design-ers joined forces to showcase both their excep-tional collections, - Sarah’s Bag in collaboration with Aziz & Walid Mouzannar Jewelry House – way outside the box.

Alia and Dori Mouzannar are the sixth genera-tion of the Aziz & Walid Mouzannar Jewelry House. The Mouzannar brothers positioned it as a main jewelry destination for the entire Middle East. They have two boutiques in Beirut; one in downtown and the main boutique is in Ashrafieh. Having their friendship go a long day, Alia Mouzannar and Sarah Beydoun collabo-rated together to exhibit Sarah’s Bag alongside the newest Mouzannar jewelry collections.

Tell us about your journey; how did your career begin?

AM: Yes, somehow I knew this was on going to be on my plate. I studied architecture and interior design in Beirut. I needed to have my own vision in jewelry. I wanted to be different. I wanted an identity and an emotional value.

SB:Sarah’s Bag started in 2000 in Beirut. I studied sociology and my thesis was about women in prison and prostitution. Hence, I spent a lot of time with unprivileged women who have endured unfortunate circumstances and I really wanted to help them. I started it as a social project for these women to give them incentive to have a better life. In order to continue, I had to have a company because I didn’t want it to be just one project; I wanted it to be ongoing. So, I had the idea of creating contemporary handmade handbags using the oriental skills of these women. We teach them beading, crochet, embroidery, etc. This project motivated them to finish their sentence and come back to us. So, we recruited them; we have women working inside the prison and over 100 women working outside. It’s all about women, actually!

Is this your first visit to Kuwait?

AM: It is the first time we’re exhibiting here in Kuwait. My family used to come and do exhibi-tions because we have a lot of Kuwaiti clients in Beirut. However, with everything that’s happen-ing right now in the country, we decided to come here and showcase our work for four days.

SB:This is my fourth time in Kuwait, actually! We started going regionally; we did exhibitions in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi, and we have a

good agent in Egypt. Five years ago, I started going to shows in Paris such as Collette and Le Bon Marche and we exhibit there, so our work became more international.

Can you tell us more about your collections?

AM:We have six collections here; my collections are the Arabesque and the Galet collections. My cousin, Dori, has the Bubbles, Lace, Light, and the Meteor collections.Dori and I are now working on a different line; it has more of limited edition pieces. It is very practical that you can wear during the day and also during an evening night out. They are casual chic and timeless! It fits all generations, really.

SB:Now, we are doing two collections per year, but in Beirut we constantly have new collections. Everytime we travel, we plan for a certain collec-tion to be featured there. However, officially for the international theme, we stick to two collec-tions. In this Spring/Summer 2014 collection, we have the Pop Art Brad Darling collection, the Mexican-inspired collection, and the Arabesque collection.

Why did you decide to collaborate together?

AM: Sarah is a family friend and I’ve known her for years. She’s really amazing and when she

got this project, she asked me to do it together. Probably, we will actually collaborate together on something in our next exhibition. This is only a show together. We both wanted to come to Kuwait to connect with our Kuwaiti clients, so we decided to join forces and showcase our work together. Our work is connected because we’re both targeting women because they give the right spirit to our work. Sarah’s Bag is a young brand and it gives such a fresh image and I am very happy to be working with Sarah.

SB:We’ve been friends for such a long time and we were supposed to do something together, to be honest. However, we were both very busy, so we just decided to showcase together this time and maybe in the future, we’ll have an actual collaboration in our collections.

What inspired this idea?

AM: Definitely, our oriental spirit! I get inspired by traditional art with a bit of contemporary graphic look to it. This gives me ideas about how to make jewelry very practical, beautiful, and expressive.

SB: I got inspired by this social project. I wanted to do something positive and different that would change the lives of these women.This collabora-tion was one way to do it to try and expand our

market and so that more people can be aware of the identity of our brand.

What do you have in store for us in the future?

AM: I want to do something in Dubai and I’d love to collaborate much more with fashion designers and artists in general. My goal is to keep doing what I love to do which is growing with people and designing jewelry. We’re also trying to expand in France, London, Dubai, and in Kuwait.

SB:We plan to keep going international and to showcase our work in different countries for people to get an idea of our concept and our anthropological ideas!

When I asked them about their plans going forward, I got a range of ideas crossing several disciplines, and corresponding to various lives that they’ve watched and found, in some sense, fascinating. For the moment, though, they’re enjoying the opportunities at hand.

Moschino celebrates three decades of success this year. The eponymous brand has introduced a special line of commemorative products including clothing, bags and accessories to mark the big achievement.

For this season, Moschino symbolizes women in their “good” and “bad” roles. The nun, the maid, the biker – all types of characters were represented on the brand’s catwalk. The clearly divided lines also extended to the color palette, which was mostly monochrome, with splashes of bright color here and there.

With two new introductions – organic leather from the Swedish leather supplier Tärnsjö, and organic silk – the collections show what can be created in more sustainable materials.

Coinciding with the launch, H&M is also introducing the new labelling system CleverCare – a label showing a system for sustainable wear and care.

Victoria beckham spring/summer 2014 CollectionThe interpretation of shapes and how to apply them both literally and conceptually was my starting point this season. Exploring new proportions has allowed me to further develop my silhouette and I have set boyish elements against a sense of femininity that is manifested through the use of lines, waves and textured overlays. The name Scarlett Johansson has become synonymous with bombshell. Giving Marilyn Monroe a run for her money, this bodacious blond was born on November 22, 194 to an Ashkenazi Jewish mother and a Danish father. She has a twin brother, Hunter, and two older siblings. She went to school in Manhattan, and when she expressed her love for acting, her mother began taking her to auditions. At the young age of nine, she acted in her first film role, North (1994). From then, Scarlett built herself as an actress by attending the Professional Children’s School and landing roles in big-budget films such as Home Alone 3.

Johansson grew up acting, and it was noted that her transition from childhood roles to adult roles was smooth. She had an “undisturbed aura” and her sultry voice allowed the then eighteen-year-old to get away with more mature roles. In Lost in Translation, Johansson portrayed Bill Murray’s young, naïve wife who was meant to be twenty-five. However, it was her role in the not as renowned film Ghost World (2001) that won her first award, the Toronto Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2003, Johansson raised her Golden Globe banner when she starred in the Peter Webber film, Girl with a Pearl Earring. She went on to star in blockbusters such as The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) and signed on to portray the Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Most recently, Johansson lent her voice to play an operating system in Her, which showcased her ability to have a presence on screen even if she is not physically seen.

On her personal style, Johansson cites unisex looks as her signature style. She says, “Now I’m aware of everything I wear being functional, at times exceedingly feminine, and often completely androgynous.” When not in the spotlight, she prefers looks that are multi-

functional and comfortable. However, she does tend to play up her curves with standout looks on the Red Carpet. Johansson has acted in a lot of different roles, and has worked with many costume designers. Out of all the period costumes and international wardrobes, she mentions she loves 40s dresses and wishes they would inspire her daily looks more. On a day-to-day basis, Johansson opts for plaid button-downs, jeans, and thick-rimmed glasses. Her favorite designers are Dolce&Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and Chloe. Her favorite piece is her 30’s black vintage cape that works with everything.

Not only is Johansson a great actress, but she is also a stunning beauty. Over the span of the past decade, she has topped many lists deeming her the most attractive, such as Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive and the GQ Babe of the Year. She was married to Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008-2010, and is currently engaged to Romain Dauriac. Despite her hectic life, Johansson still has time to get crafty. Summer 2010 the journey for Kuwait Pleasure Boat Racing embarked, kudus goes to Ahmad Al-Fassam and Feras Al-Mutairi. A onetime participation at the Qatar Marine Sports Federation Pro class in January 2010 triggered them to establish a team in Kuwait. In a period of four years, they have participated in 18 races in Qatar. For those students who are interested in boat racing, STUDENTALK presents all the information you need from KPR’s Co-Manager.

What instigated your participation for boat racing?I completed the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Endurance race for ATVs, and my teammate Ahmad wanted to participate in a boat race in Qatar; since he wanted someone with racing qualities, he approached me with the idea, knowing that I had no experience in boat racing whatsoever. However, I had the necessary skills to race. I gladly agreed.

Where and how does practicing for the boat racing take place?Practice is the most important part of racing, because not only does it develop your skills, but it grows a relationship between you and the boat as if it’s a human being. We must understand the boat techniques and its limits. Also, it is an opportunity to repair mechanical problems that may arise. Practice takes part mostly during the weekends, since Ahmad and I both have jobs, and only when practice is applicable according to the sea level and weather conditions. We find places that are secluded to avoid traffic. Sometimes we practice with other racers. Practice goes on as if we were in race conditions, with full safety precautions and gear.

Who provided you with the necessary support to participate in boat racing?Ahmad and I took it upon ourselves to provide the necessary means to participate. We sacrificed lots of time and effort, and also had to financially restrain ourselves in order to have the budget necessary to race. However, I must add that during our trip to all races, from start to end, as Kuwaiti racers and as friends, all Kuwaiti teams helped each other when it is needed regardless. And if it weren’t for the extra

initiative from all Kuwaiti racers, many teams wouldn’t exist today. And now with magazines like THETALK, we are able to reach out to more people than we have ever imagined, whether it is potential racers that need guidance, or people with general race interests, for that, I humbly thank you.

What are the necessary steps to take in order to encourage more people to participate?It is not merely a step, as for such a perilous sport you need a passion for racing and an audacious nature. A good way to start is to communicate with current teams, many people think that approaching a racing team is very hard, when it is the opposite. Some teams have unfilled voids, maybe not as drivers, but growing within the crew is the best way to test one’s self capabilities.. If anyone needs to be guided in the right direction, we will happily provide all necessary information about safe, supervised race.

What are the challenges that you face when you manage KPR?There are many challenges when it comes to managing a team, and for us the challenges are doubled since we are the managers, sponsors,

mechanics, and racers. Time and money are mainly the biggest constraints, as employees living off our salaries, we manage our careers and financial obligations in parallel with our team. Our team has grown in 4 years from 2 members participating in one Class in the QMSF (Qatar Marine Sports Federation) Pro races, to 4 members and participating in 2 Classes of the QMSF Pro races, and thus achieving 3rd place in races for both Classes in our last season, which is our best result yet, so slowly but surely, we are climbing up the competition ladder, with even higher expectations for next year.

Any last words for the readers?Success doesn’t just happen by chance, it is the result of hard work and many sacrifices, and without that, success has no taste. Team KPR has never failed in progression towards success. We have achieved enough to keep us going for more. Our thrive for the first place has grown exponentially. We keep surprising our competitors every year. Respecting all safety rules comes before anything, and must be taken seriously. So to all future racers out there, good luck and be safe!

ADr. Rami Abdul Hadi, a Lebanese dentist, is a graduate from Aleppo university’s Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine in Syria and licensed in Kuwait as a General Practitioner. Post graduating in 1996, he began treating children’s teeth under school dental health programs in Hawally. Dr. Abdul Hadi then received a diploma in Computer Sciences and Applications after further developing his I.T skills. In addition to his employment in the Ministry of Health, he was also employed as a coordinator of the Kuwaiti Dental Association conventions, henceforth participating in various organizational committees and coordinated with all relevant public entities, in addition to his social and media related activities. Subsequently, Dr. Abdul Hadi supervised and managed Farawaniya Dental Center, developing constructive policies aimed at monitoring the quality of procedures at the Center and to raise the number of clinics from 30 to 46. Under Dr. Abdul Hadi’s management (2000-2004) a new centre commenced and the number of equipped dental clinics rose from 2 to 11. Coordinating media for the school dental health programs, Dr. Abdul Hadi was able to ensure successful business strategies in addition to strengthening the coordination between the Ministry of Health and the school’s dental programs. He managed to organize and launch awareness campaigns, advertisements and essays in relevance to the programs. In addition, he created the school programs’ magazine and launched the oral

and dental health programs website (2001-2004) under the auspices of the Dental Health Department in the Ministry of Health.Soon after, Dr. Abdul Hadi leaded several positions at private entities, such as the Head of Gulf Clinic Advanced Dental Care Center, Head of International Salam Hospital and the Head of the Dentistry Department. During his time there, he developed the Customer Service, Patient Care and the Dentistry Department, among others, while developing the patient medical records, personnel affairs and logistic and technical support department. During his employment at the hospital, he participated in several committees (e.g Ethical and Professional Practices Committee) earning accreditation from the Canadian Council for Health Services on Accreditation. Furthermore, he received a degree in hospital security management and hospital hospitality management and a certificate of membership in Team Management and Self-development. Keen to further develop, he also attained his MBA in General and Strategic Management from Kuwait Maastricht Business School.

Why Dentistry out of all other medical specializations?The decision to make that choice came from many factors, let alone the nobility of Medicine as a humane mission. Humanitarianly:The awareness of culture, prevention and curing pain matters to me when treating patients.

Precise, competitive, vibrant. Massimiliano Giornetti works on an idea of energetic simplicity for the Salvatore Ferragamo Summer Collection. The Florence-based fashion house subtly employs the very essence of its savoir-faire on the cuts of the garments by permanently altering their structure through a process of minimalism whose appreciation is enhanced in the details. The quest for harmony is centered around the male figure, celebrated in both its physicality and rationality.

The silhouette is clean. Hinted at but never revealed, protected but never entrapped, the body projects an aura of composed sensuality.

Its energy and vitality is perceptible under the quilted blousons, the little jackets with asymmetric fastenings, and the strong and minimalist short overcoats. The fashion house becomes a workshop where new clothing formulas are tested. In a cross between iconography and knowhow, sportswear is reinterpreted with fine tailoring while formalwear is imbued with the no-frills efficiency and comfort of sportswear. Folded hems,

drawstrings and straps create movement on hand crafted parkas; zips crisscross the sides of compact bomber jackets; elastic bands hold the waists and the hems of trousers in place. The precise expression of style is rhythmic, deconstructed, and amplified by the sequence of square forms that create grid overlays or that etch cut-outs on the surfaces, dematerializing them without altering their compact nature.

The taut materials underline the quest for a sinewy range. The dry touch plays with perceptive differences: cottons as fixed as paper, wools with technical finishing; dry wools, mohair, kangaroo leather. The color palette is liquid, with sudden contrasts: light blue, cyan, dark blue, cobalt, chalk and beige tones are accentuated with flashes of cactus green, cinnamon and vibrant red.

The accessories are dynamic symbols. Derby shoes fastened with elastic straps and sandals are sums of their parts, which underline their competitive streak. TOd’s dOublE sTriPEss14The Tod’s Double Stripe, established first in its bag collection for men for spring\summer 2013, where a selection of styles was distinguished by a double stripe of leather down its sides, has now become a design trope associated with the brand. For this season, the Double Stripe has been applied to several new areas of the collection, in either contrasting colours, or in one colour where the stripes are indicated by stitching alone.

The Double Stripe bags are still a core com-ponent of the Tod’s bag collection for men, and come in a variety of styles, including soft briefcases, shoppers, sports bags, and luxury rucksacks. Materials include calfskin, suede and exotic skins, and colours range from subtle browns, blues and greys, to brighter blue, red and orange. The stripes are either stitched in one colour, or come in contrasting colours, depending on the style.

The Style Blogger rings familiar to many men looking for a reliable men’s fashion blog to help them look their best. TSBMen started as a simple uS-based blog that founder Dan Trepanier did not imagine could reach such great international recognition. In 2009, when Trepanier was in his undergrad, his peers would often turn to him for fashion advice. Oftentimes, he became too busy to make the fashion rounds, so he decided that he would start a blog for his friends to get tips and sample looks to follow. Although TSB was initially a hobby, it soon took over Trepanier’s life and the website now receives thousands of visitors from over 195 countries. What makes TSB stand out among the rest is Trepanier’s attention to the real, everyday man looking for something smart but practical. He caters to anyone “somewhere between Kanye West and average Joe.”

Raised on a small farm outside of Windsor, Ontario, Trepanier grew up with a penchant for basketball. He moved to New York City where he was recruited by Columbia University to play basketball and obtain a degree in psychology. After graduating, he spent one year floating around Wall Street internships and the buying office at the world-renowned Saks Fifth Avenue. He won Esquire Magazine’s “Best Dressed Real Man in America” title, which encouraged him to attend the NYC Fashion Institute of Technology where he graduated from the menswear design program. He serves as a Gillette brand ambassador, a freelance writer, and a consultant within the menswear industry.

The Style Blog boasts a repertoire of collaborations with several different brands including Ralph Lauren and Van Cleef & Arpels. He has also worked with Frank Clegg and Nordstrom, to preserve his motto of “creating practical and inspiring content for real guys.” Trepanier is an advocate for the natural and the

appealing. His key piece is his jeans. He owns twelve pairs, but really only wears six of them. He says that the key to making jeans really look good is that they have to be authentically distressed- too often, jeans look uncomfortable or starchy. What makes Tepanier’s jeans stand out is that they have been broken into, and they have a “natural” fit. His personal style can be described as basics meets contemporary. His outfits are a blank slate on which he integrates an essential part of current trends. He loves layering and dressing appropriately for each season, and sticks to colour pallets that compliment his surroundings.

Trepanier really makes his mark when it comes to formal occasion- his suits are his passion. He does not conform to traditional coloured suits- navies, blacks, greys- but rather opts for

unusual and bold colours. He has a fondness for deep hues such as burgundies and sea greens, and understands the key to creating harmony between the tie, the socks, the shirt, and the shoes. The Japanese-inspired Arceau Temari model combines the skills of snow setting and hard stone marquetry in an exceptional collection of jewelry watches. The story of Temari, an art meaning “hand ball” in Japanese, is bound up with that of kimonos, since the making of these silken garments provided enough scraps of fabric to make these entertaining objects that were greatly appreciated at the Imperial court. Little by little, simple stitching gave way to embroidery and to motifs that were increasingly sophisticate, in terms both their complex geometry and their colorful harmonies.

These ancestral balls have inspired a Hermès silk carré, of which one of the motifs is now reinterpreted in the Arceau collection. These watches are issued in limited white gold editions set with diamonds according to the snow-setting technique and feature dials reproducing the design of one of these balls by combining diamonds with a marquetry composed either of white mother-of-pearl, onyx, lapis lazuli or opal. The snow-setting is done with no predefined plan; and instead each stone is individually selected and put in place; each claw is cut and each grain is beaded so as to create a harmonious overall effect that is unique to each model. No less than 700 stones are set on the case, a job that takes an experienced gem-setter almost three weeks.

On each of these exceptional watches, the dial is crafted according to traditional diamond- setting and hard stone marquetry techniques. For each watch, and in this case according to a precise plan, 20 tiny fragments of all different shapes and sizes are milled from a block of stone or mother-of-pearl finely sliced into infinitely small platelets. The pieces are then individually assembled on the already gem-set dial. These two operations require great precision and dexterity, since the stone is particularly fragile on such a tiny scale. As if

in a miniature puzzle, each part takes its place within a picture that transcends it. The opulence of the materials enter into a fascinating dialogue with the finesse of the motifs, as traditions and expertise meet and mingle to endow each of these unique creations with the refined splendor of Imperial Japan.

HEALTH

Exfoliate

Get your hands on a good loofah, and scrub! Try to get a good scrub in once a week to make sure that all your dead skin cells are removed. Focus on particularly dense areas like your elbows and knees.

Moisturize

After your scrub, your skin needs to be replenished. Choose your favourite moisturizer and lather it all over you skin, which is most vulnerable after a good scrubbing, meaning more moisture can get in.

Detox

Stock up on mangoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, carrots, spinach, apricots, and berries to promote skin health. These foods are rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that keeps your skin supple and healthy.

Befriend Fish

Fish are full of healthy oils that do wonders for the body, including keeping

the skin looking radiant. Fish you should be focusing on this summer are: salmon, sardines, trout, mackerel, and herring.

Hydrate

Being in the sun most of the day means you will get thirstier: don’t hold back. If you are thirsty, drink as much water as you want because otherwise you will suffer from dehydration and/or heat stroke, and let’s face it: you can’t really get a good tan stuck in recovery!

Protect

When you’re in the sun, you want to get a lasting tan, but you also want it to last. Go for tanning lotion/spray with at least SPF 25. In with the good, out with the bad!

Preserve

Once you’re out of the sun, lock in that tan with a good after sun lotion or oil, and put on something fluorescent or white to make your colour pop. Happy tanning!

Japan is a vibrant nation that has made its mark on the world. It is the homeland of many international favourites, such as anime and sushi. Over countless years, Japan has built itself to become a world leader in technology and innovation meanwhile maintaining its rich culture and tradition. There are myriads different things to do, like spending the day in Kyoto watching traditional geisha dances and soaking in an onsenafterwards, or sampling all the culinary thrills Tokyo has to offer. What makes Japan great is that it is exotic but modern, making you feel comfortable but ensuring that your time spent there will not be forgotten.

Cherry blossoms need cold weather to “wake up” and warm weather to bloom. 2014 was a bit chillier than normal, setting the blooming season a few days behind schedule. For this year, the best time to see the cherry blossoms bloom is from April 7- May 8, when the entire nation is at its peak. During this month, the national Japanese pastime becomes hanami- flower viewing. Hanami consists of taking a leisurely stroll in a park or having a picnic with friends, but the latter can get very crowded and people often reserve their picnic spots long before the midday meal. To make the sights even more remarkable, cherry blossoms are often lit up at night, especially when the trees are situated by an old temple, castle, or shrine in areas like Chureito Pagoda and Mount Fuji.

Japan boasts natural phenomena as far as the eye can see- literally. It is home to Mount Fuji, cited by artists as the “most perfect volcano.” Its flawless structure inspires religious epiphanies in many Shintos- the spirituality that connects past beliefs to present progress. IT also has architecture that dates back to the 7th century AD. The spectacular Buddhist architecture remains unchanged to this day, and temples are often built in exact imitation as they were when they were first erected- with no nails. The furniture is custom made for the restaurant and the interior is designed by Adam Tihany, an American interior designer, famous for restaurant designs around the world. Véranda uses only pure, natural ingredients to maintain a clean eating standard. The restaurant is sleek and elegant, as well as affordable. The entirety of the restaurant’s crockery is specifically made for Véranda, and the plates are unbranded to accommodate an organic, untainted theme to reflect the fare.

Véranda begins with the first bite, which is comprised of progressive local favourites such as hummus, mutabbal (eggplant puree), and halloumi cheese. The velvety hummus crowns a roasted, sweet, yellow bell pepper.

The mutabbal comes atop a beautifully charred eggplant, and is very bold in its taste. Finally, one of the most requested dishes at Véranda is the warm, grilled halloumi – it is soft, but contrasts greatly with the crisp crostini it lays atop. The saltiness of the cheese is complemented by a pesto glaze and roasted cherry tomato. After the first bite comes the starter course. The salmon salad consists of a cured salmon base topped with fennel and green apple. It has a light, cherry oak smoked flavour that is prepared a-la-minute, meaning that the flavour is infused one minute before it is served. The presentation is magnificent - the smoke is captured in a tall glass cover and removed at the table, imbuing the atmosphere with the tantalising scent, making it one of Véranda’s signature dishes. The second salad we sampled was a deliciously fresh dish, the watermelon feta salad.

The saccharine watermelon is contrasted with the sharp feta and bitter pickled tomatoes, and this delectable medley is topped off by a hazel and orange dressing.

The penultimate and grandest course, the entrée, is very difficult to choose! The lamb musakhan is a familiar dish to Mediterranean diners, as the menu has been designed around the region’s cuisine. The lamb is cooked for eight hours to ensure thoroughness and tenderness. It is stuffed with a generous helping of seasonal vegetables such as carrots and zucchini, and encased in a parmesan outer layer. It is simultaneously savory and comfortable, making the dish a Véranda favourite. The black cod is buttery and melts in the mouth, and is served with a crunchy asparagus tempura. The prawn casserole has a delectable, vibrant leek and apricot base with large, juicy prawns. The combination of fruit and prawn was daring, but proved to be a signature at Véranda. All the entrées are served with side dishes: roasted baby potatoes, quinoa with squash and goat’s cheese, sautéed mushrooms with truffle oil, and artichokes. Each side dish complements a certain flavour: the mushrooms fit perfectly with the lamb, the baby potatoes with the cod, and the asparagus complemented the prawns. The quinoa squash was excellent on its own.

Véranda takes pride in its desserts, as well it should. There were three assortments for us to sample: Fresh Fruit Salad, Nougat Glacé and Exotic Mousse. Naturally, each selection had

a twist: the fruit came in three clear bowls with different mixtures. The first was orange slices in rose syrup, the second was mango slivers and pomegranate seeds in mint syrup, and the last was a combination of hearty berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry) served in spicy black pepper syrup. The frozen nougat was a combination of pistachio and other nuts, with apricot and honey sauce and a caramelised sugar topping. This particular dish is a popular Mediterranean dessert, but with a Véranda twist. Finally, the passion fruit mousse comes between a delicate almond biscuit and mango cream, and is adorned with grated coconut on the side. This particular dish stands out as a dessert, and is best complemented by a Senorita, a citrusy drink with passion fruit, lime and orange juice. In fact, Véranda’s drinks could be dessert on their own with the tropical tastes of Treasure- banana, kiwi, orange, and mango- or Pink Amaretto- fresh berries blended with milk and orchid syrup.

Véranda stands out as the first fine dining establishment in Kuwait. The restaurant manager states that because of its location, Véranda is home to a diverse range of clientele. With food development and review every eight weeks, Véranda is a dynamic cuisine that opts to combine the regional with the international. The quality of the food at Véranda combines with the culture of its location and the diversity of its staff and clientele to create a strong expertise that makes the essence of Véranda- the first fine-dining experience in Kuwait.

In the middle of the 19th century, American Transcendentalist author Henry David Thoreau dropped everything and ventured out into the woods by Walden Pond to rehabilitate his spirit and rediscover his humanity through nature. He built a cabin and lived on the land alone, and recounts the entire autobiography in Walden, or Life in the Woods. The text is a staple for anyone hoping to understand the attachment Romantic writers had to nature in the nineteenth century.

Charles Dickens was a great writer for many reasons; but one constantly overlooked motif in his works is his brilliant descriptive language. Great Expectations is loved by many and is a rudiment in any library. Pip is set to work as a blacksmith’s apprentice, but a secret donor finances his life as a gentleman in London. Great Expectations is a tale of new beginnings and second chances, which makes it a perfect read for spring. Also, be sure to keep your eye on the lookout for descriptions of nature and the environment- Dickens really understood the relationship between a character and his/her surroundings.

In the middle of Dust Bowl America, the Joad family must trek across dusty landscapes to find work and shelter in California. John Steinbeck uses the dusty landscapes and gloomy days to highlight how his characters feel in the midst of their journey towards a greener, lush land of promise. The story is as real and as relatable as ever, as we are in constant search of greener grass. Although the story is open-ended, the beauty of it is that you are able to infer your own conclusion. So pick up The Grapes of Wrath and give the American Dream a try!

Consequently, she falls in love with Ambrose Pike, an orchid painter who can inexplicably grasp the essence of nature through paint. Ambrose pulls Alma into a spiritual world of magic and divinity, and she exposes him to the literal world of cause and effect. Together, they attempt to make sense of themselves through each other and their studies of nature.

This classic tale of shipwreck and survival has come into your life in one way or the other. Daniel Defoe’s novel came to life in 1997 with Tom Hanks as the title character, but the novel is just as vivid on its own. When the novel first came out in 1719, the title was three sentences long, and people mistook it for an autobiographical work because of how realistically it portrayed the 28-year-solitude of a shipwrecked man. Still, Robinson Crusoe is a tale of survival and man’s dependence on nature, as well as an enthralling look into the mind of a man who hasn’t seen another human being in almost three decades.
