HEADTEACHER’S NEWS
Jack Petchey Awards On Tuesday 30th April the Barking and Dagenham Jack Petchey Award Presentation for the winners of 2018 will be held at the Broadway Theatre. Since the school started in 2002 we have always sent a group of very proud students to the annual event so that they can receive their individual Jack Petchey Awards. This year I will be accompanying our award winners and I look forward to sharing pictures and news with you next week.
Below is a picture of Doyinsola Ekuntuyi 13D who was presented with a Jack Petchey Award in March 2019 and will attend the Award Ceremony next year.

Sixth Form Parents’ Evening “Lite” and Well-Being Workshop We are running a workshop to help parents and carers support their sons and daughters through the stressful exam season.
On Thursday 2nd May at 5:30pm – 6:00pm Mrs Quail who has trained as a mental health first aider will give practical advice. We hope to be able to give tips on:
• preventing unhelpful anxiety • managing stress during revision • preparing for exam days • performing well in an exam
There will be time for individual questions too.
If you think that this workshop will be helpful, please come along to the Sixth Form area of the school.
This workshop will take place during the Parents’ Evening “lite” that we are running on the same afternoon. Some students and parents will be invited to meet subject staff for last minute advice and support. If your son or daughter is invited, I hope that you can come.
If you cannot come on 2nd May but have concerns that you would like to discuss, please get in touch. The Sixth Form Team wish all the students every success during their last few weeks at the Jo Richardson Community School.

Year 7 France Trip In order for your child to participate in the France trip they require a valid passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of the trips. Please continue to send passports into school for photocopying, if you are applying for a new passport we must have a copy of this by Wednesday 12th June 2019 with payments made in full by Friday 28th June 2019.

International Maths Competition Winners
Congratulations to Arturs Ieva (Year 8) and Nikhil Ahtty (Year 7) for winning through the preliminary round and reaching the finals of the Pangea Maths Competition. This competition is run in 21 European countries and is very prestigious. We are thrilled that these two JRCS students have made it to the finals being held in London this year.

Planet Hunters with Python Project
Congratulations to Brandon Bridges in Year 12 who completed the Planet Hunters with Python project with Queen Mary University last week. Students from Years 10 and 12
attended a lecture and introduction session at Queen Mary University on the 15th October and since then Brandon has been working hard using a programming language called Python to write a computer program to detect and analyse data from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope. He was able to use the data and the program he wrote to find a planet orbiting a star and find out what the planet is like.
Brandon did a fantastic job showing resilience and ambition, overcoming problems with the code as well as producing an excellent academic poster displaying the findings from his project.

Herbert Smith Freehills Scholarship update
Congratulations to the six Year 12 students that completed their applications, workshops and interviews last term for the Herbert Smith Freehills Scholarship programme.
The feedback from the prestigious law firm was that the standard from all students across the schools was extremely high.
Special congratulations to Jennifer Dicko, Reece Johnson and Anmona Siddaqua who have been successful in getting to the final selection event next week. They will be taking part in a group task day and will be informed by the end of June if they have secured one of the five final scholarship places.

Miss Campbell Deputy Director of Sixth Form Paris 2019 On Friday the 5th April 2019, the Modern Foreign Languages Department took 37 year 10 and 11 students to Paris. The purpose of the trip was to give our students an opportunity to use the language they learn in the classroom in real life context, as well as extending their cultural awareness.
As soon as we arrived in Paris, we took in the sights of the majestic Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the breath-taking view from the Montparnasse Tower. The next day, we enjoyed a full day at Disneyland to the students’ great delight and visited both parks!
We continued our immersion into the French Culture through a visit to the Louvre Museum on the final day. We were fortunate to take some memorable pictures of some paintings including the famous portrait of the Mona Lisa (La Joconde) painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the most emblematic portraits in the history of Art. We concluded our trip on a cruise boat on the Seine river (bâteau mouche) with an incredible guided tour and view of some of Paris’ main monuments and most famous landmarks including the Cathedral of Notre de Dame, we were privileged to see the iconic Cathedral before the devastating fire.
The trip was immensely enjoyable and a huge success and the students’ exemplary behaviour further enhanced the values we believe in at JRCS.
