Hello from Father Szwarc - Repulse Bay

I would like to express my gratitude for all the boxes with clothes you have sent to me some time ago. I'm sorry it took me so long to write this "Thank You" note but first i didn't know whom to thank. Finally I got your email addresses from Maria Fraser and we figure out that it must be from you. But then with many activities I just forgot about it, I'm sorry.

I would like to thank you for all those things. In Repulse Bay we have a food bank but it runs only on donations from people, so most of the time it just doesn't "run", so i decided to donate all those clothes send by you to the food bank. They sold it for very cheap prices and collected a bit of money for the food for the families in need. This way some people got nice clothes and some other people got food. Thanks to You.

Please find attached a recent picture with children.

With prayers and gratitude. Fr Daniel Szwarc OMI

During the week of April 13, 2015, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) visited McMaster University to review ALL residency training programs. The survey process occurs on a six year rotating cycle with our most recent survey held in 2009. The survey team has the responsibility of ensuring each residency training program adheres to Royal College standards of training. The review process is a mammoth undertaking for the university and each residency program. The process began last summer with the submission of extensive documentation to the Royal College followed by our on-site review on April 14, 2015. Our review day involved interviews with Program Director, Department Chair, Residency Training Committee, Residency Group and Radiologist from all teaching sites. I am very pleased with our assessment by the Royal College. The survey team were satisfied with our documentation and interview process. They were most impressed by our collegial group of residents who are the highlight of the program. Our preliminary feedback from survey team is for FULL ACCREDITATION WITH ROUTINE EXTERNAL REVIEW pending final approval from Royal College Specialty Training Committee in Fall 2015. This is great news for our residency program and shows that our radiology community continues to provide a quality training program. Thank you to all involved with our successful review. See you in 2021 !!! Dr. David Landry Program Director

RADIOLOGIST’S CORNER - Dr. Jan Elder

Farewell Dr. Elder

April 30, 2015 will mark the last day that we have the privilege of calling Dr. Jan Elder one of our own. Dr. Elder will be relocating to the Toronto office of KMH Labs.

Dr. Elder (Jan) joined the Diagnostic Imaging department at the Juravinski (Henderson) site July 1994. She was hired to lead the site GI program following the completion of her fellowship. The positive impact she had upon the department was immediate. But as everyone knows, she was not selfish. Everyone across the city has benefitted from her presence.

Jan immediately assumed the role of the Radiology Program Committee Member (RPC) for the Henderson site and has held the title ever since. Dedicated to teaching and the radiology residency program, Jan was presented with the PAIRO – Clinical Teaching Award McMaster University 2003. This was followed by receiving Excellence in Clinical teaching awards 2006 and 2011 and Best Rounds 2012. It is safe to say that Jan was an integral component in the strengthening of the residency program; now considered one of the top in the country.

Jan has been an examiner for the Royal College since 2005. Her enthusiasm and experience has been shared with many others through the Radiology Mentorship Program (2001-2012), her annual involvement in providing Mock Oral examinations in addition to all of the “unofficial” mock examinations that countless successful radiology residents were able to benefit from. But Jan has been more than a teacher. She is an excellent clinician and subsequently was awarded the Hamilton Health Sciences Medical Staff Association – Distinguished Service Award in 2008, just to add to her collection.

This just scratches the surface of her involvement with radiology. Jan has held countless administrative roles at the JHCC with one of those thankless tasks of being the scheduler. On the fun side, Jan has always been involved with the departmental social activities and is responsible for the success of the joint HGH and JHCC annual Christmas Party. For those at the JHCC site, If you have received a bottle of wine for nurses week, chocolates at Christmas or a timely card/gift during a difficult time, Jan was involved. We wish Jan all the best in her future endeavors, knowing that she is just down the road. We hope that she will always feel at home here in Hamilton and pay us countless visits during and after work hours. Stay tuned for a semi formal send-off anticipated for late May.

Dr. Ramiro

Larrazabal It is with great pleasure that we announce the New Approval status for the Neuroradiology Program at McMaster University given by the Royal College Accreditation Committee. This is a two year program, which includes training in the main areas of adult neuroradiology with exposure to the pediatric, interventional and research fields. It constitutes a gratifying reward to the continuous effort to improve and raise our academic and service standards. This wouldn't have been possible without the help, support and work of Drs. Walton, Koff, Finlay and Landry, the incredible Neuroradiology Team at HHSC, the radiology residents and specially the patients we serve. Special thanks to Dr. Pat Garces and a great support team from the administrative side, including Sue Gaudet, Marilynn Scott, Lori Power, Lidia Menechella and to the radiology technologists who work with us everyday. It is a great milestone, as a result of collective and coordinated team work. Dr. Ramiro Larrazabal Hamilton General Hospital
