Fareham teenagers make the TeenStar 2014 Grand FinalFareham’s Amy Marsden and

S-Jay fought off competition

from nearly 8,000 unsigned

singers across the UK to reach

the Grand Final of TeenStar! on

July 19 at Birmingham’s NEC.

TeenStar is a national talent

competition for teens and

pre-teens which travels the

UK in search for the UK’s best

singers, singer-songwriters,

rappers and vocalists of all genres.

Amy and S-Jay are both year seven students at Brookfield

Community School, students of Vocademy Singing School

and both have the same vocal coach, Bubsie Yates.

On her Journey through to the finals Amy sang “Let it go”

from the film Frozen, in the initial auditions, followed by her

own version of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” in the regional

finals and her own song “Enough Now”.

She will be singing at a charity event on 12 July in

association with Autism Hampshire.

S Jay had to fight hard to win his place in the Grand

Final on a wild card vote. He didn’t make it to the top four

in the judges scores at the Area Finals so had to promote

his wild card by contacting local radio stations, local

stores, Facebook and even busking for votes at Whiteley

Shopping Centre.

A spokesperson for

TeenStar commented:

“We are searching for

an act that not only

has the live ability to

impress an audience,

industry judges and

A&R associates, but

an act that has the

potential to become a

‘Poppies Red and Cornflowers Blue’

Fareham goes Vintage

‘Poppies Red and Cornflowers Blue’ comes to Titchfield

Parish Rooms on Friday 20 June.

Poacher’s Moon are a band of six musicians based near

Blandford in Dorset. To commemorate the centenary of

the Great War, the leader of the band, John Anderson has

written and composed a new show which is aptly named

‘Poppies Red and Cornflowers Blue.’

This show has been two years in the making and is a result

of a huge amount of research by John, his family and the

band. The resulting story told with original music, song and

poems before a backdrop of evocative images, follows the

lives of our local soldiers from rural England (narrated by

own soldier, Peter Gritton the storyteller, from his trench on

the stage).

Poacher’s Moon are thrilled that the show has been invited

to perform across the South of England this year and hopes

to expand the bookings into next year.

This performance is suitable for everyone over twelve

years of age and all will be welcome to come and listen, join

A brand new event arrives in Fareham town centre this

Benefits for under 18’s gym trainingby Frank Mangna

As a professional fitness expert I believe starting healthy habits and exercise from a young age will help to create healthy & confident adults. In this article I focus on why and how I think under 18’s can benefit from being physically fit and strong through gym training and regular physical exercise.

Keeping physically active will make your joints body and organs stay in good working order. Exercise will also help to maintain one’s body weight at a healthy level and will help to protect you against catching coughs and colds. More benefits include increased brain activity, energy levels, better sleep, stress and anxiety reduction. Exercise will also make you look and feel great by giving you an increased boost of self-confidence.

Under 18’s should aim to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. It is not necessary to do it all in one go. The exercises can be done in intervals of 15 to 20 minutes throughout the day. This includes anything from playing a sport, going to the gym or even walking up and down stairs. All these activities will increase the heart rate helping you to get fitter.

Some forms of exercise can fit naturally into your lifestyle as long as you plan and manage your time appropriately. Walking is a healthy form of exercise which can be done everyday, cycling to school, college or work, jogging or even running around can improve your fitness. Joining group exercise classes or playing team sports can be fun and enjoyable. They posses an amazing energetic social atmosphere.

James Blunt & The Lightning Seedsto headline Wickham Festival

The four-day Festival is being held over the weekend

of Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 August and features a

host of top-name artists performing on three live music

stages near the village of Wickham in Hampshire.

Singer-songwriter James Blunt will headline the

opening night on Thursday 14 August as part of his

84-date worldwide Moon Landing tour.

The 40-year-old who has sold more than 20 million

albums worldwide shot to fame with hit singles

(Continued over the page)

International superstar James Blunt and top chart band The Lightning Seeds are to headline this summer’s festival

“You’re Beautiful” and ‘Goodbye My Lover” taken from

his No. 1 album “Back to Bedlam”.

Liverpudlian band The Lightning Seeds have had 12

Top 20 hits in the UK including “Lucky You” and the

football anthem “Three Lions”. They will top the bill at

Wickham on Friday 15 August.

Other artists confirmed for the four-day Festival

include North American singer-songwriter Steve Earle;

Staple of ‘The Specials’ & ‘Fun Boy

Three’; Martin Barre of ‘Jethro Tull’; The

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain; Afro

Celt Sound System; Oysterband; and

The Dhol Foundation who performed

with Kate Bush at the 2012 London

Olympics closing ceremony.

Wickham Festival organiser Peter

Chegwyn says this year’s line-up is the

Festival’s strongest-ever.

“It’s a real coup for a small village like

Wickham to attract an international

superstar like James Blunt to

perform at its Festival”, said Mr. Chegwyn. “This gives

fans a rare chance to see James Blunt performing

up close and personal instead of in the distance at a

football stadium or massive outdoor arena.

“As our main stage is in a huge circus-style ‘Big Top’

fans can also enjoy the music whatever the weather.

The beauty of the Wickham Festival is that it retains its

friendly family feel and laid-back atmosphere.”

As well as over 100 musical acts the Wickham Festival

also features a host of other attractions including the

‘Groovy Movie’ solar-powered cinema tent; a digital

funfair; street theatre; storytelling; dance displays;

childrens entertainers; a traditional crafts fayre; real

ales festival; exotic foods fayre and much more.

Full details can be found on the Festival website at

www.wickhamfestival.co.uk and tickets can be

booked online, by phone on 023 8071 1818 or in

person from Wickham Wine Bar in The Square,

Shopping… In Wickham Village

Wickham was once the largest market village in Britain, and still retains the largest village market square in Britain… just without the market stalls. But it conveniently provides a pretty big customer car park now for all the shoppers and tourists that visit the shops dotted around historic and beautiful traditional buildings of the square. The shops provide an array of boutiques and services that could almost self-contain a resident living in Wickham, but it also boasts many other shops tucked away inside tiny shopping centres that can only be seen in all its glory by coming in for a browse.

Warwick Lane Shopping Centre from the frontage looks like a single shop stood next to Greens Restaurant and the pharmacy, and what used to be RG Warwick Hardware. Now inside is an emporium of various shops, café and hair salon. Walk through the old fashioned looking ‘Lane’ with its lanterns and stone floor. Browse the boutiques for jewellery, fashion, childrenswear, art, gifts, antiques and collectibles. Then pop upstairs for a coffee and Panini or cake. Sit in the open plan café packed full of interesting collectables, home wares and many more antiques and jewellery. Perhaps support The Rowans Hospice shop.

Located a little further into the square, the well-established Bay Tree Walk has been for many years a regular favourite for many visitors and locals as a regular place to visit for unique gifts, speciality chocolates, home furnishings, health and beauty salon and Tea Room. There are cabinets too with unusual collectables and jewellery. Established for over 26 years Bay Tree Walk is well known in the village and for many, the Tea Room offers a great place to catch up with friends over Tea and Cake.

Please do come and see us soon.

RG Warwick Hardware as it used to be.

Sarah visits Reflexion TherapiesAt the far end of Wickham Square is a little haven of peace

and tranquillity. On the ground floor of Culver Cottage is

a calm, soft lit, fragrant cocoon where Julie, of Reflexion

Therapies, works her magic.

As a first time client I was delighted by the physical

surrounding and by the unique tailor-made blend of

essential oils Julie devised from their initial consultation.

I experienced a totally sensory balancing treatment which

relaxed my muscles, eased my tension and restored my

equilibrium.

With my hectic work schedule, I now realise that a

treatment from Julie is just the thing when a little TLC is

needed. Not so much a luxury, but part of your monthly

routine in order to maintain health and well-being.

I was impressed with her book of testimonials, which

included many people who have benefitted from Julie’s

therapies.

Foodie fun, musical magic, sublime shopping and kiddie capers

the Organising Team of the first ever “Taste of Wickham”

festival is hoping that this formula will be a winning one.

With the aim of inviting locals and visitors alike to discover

everything that is great about the market town, Taste of

Wickham will be opened by the Mayor of Winchester at 10am

on Sunday 14th September.

With the word “taste” in the name, you would of course

expect food, but as Chairman of the Organising Team, Ben

Sawyers explains, it’s about much more than that.

“We started off with the idea of holding a food festival, but

very quickly we realised that if we wanted people to really

experience what Wickham is all about, our event would need

to be more “all-encompassing”.

For one day only, the Square will be completely closed to

traffic and parking spaces will instead be filled by marquees

and more than 40 different stalls selling everything from

chocolates to cheese, goat meat to gifts and herbs to hair

products. Not all of the stallholders will be retailers, so don’t

be surprised if you come home with an appointment for a

makeover or an idea of how you might go about that extension

you’ve been meaning to do.”

More than just a market, Taste of Wickham has also been

developed to entertain. Local chefs will take to the stage

at a cookery demonstration unit and entertainers have been

booked to sing and dance at one of three “busking spots”

around the Square. Free children’s entertainment has been

organised and the local primary school has been invited to

get involved.

The whole event is being organised by a group of volunteers

supported by the Parish Council and helped along by Market

Towns Development Officer for Wickham, Heidi Isa. So far

the Organising Team has been successful in winning funding

from Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council

to help cover some of the considerable costs involved in

staging such an event.

Oh, and if you’re wondering where on earth everybody will

park, the Organising Team have a solution for this too. A park

and ride service will run between Park Place Pastoral Centre

and the Square. For up-to-date information on the event see

www.facebook.com/tasteofwickham

Communications Library dedicated in memory of founder

A new historic communications library which was recently

opened at HMS Collingwood was dedicated in memory of

the man who brought its concept to life, Chris Rickard.

Friends, family, colleagues and service personnel who

knew Chris gathered in Mercury Building, HMS Collingwood

to witness the opening of the Chris Rickard Communications

Library by Commanding Officer of the base Captain Steve

Dainton, CBE Royal Navy. A memorial service was held

and a speech read by Chris’ close friend Danny Streather

before attendees were invited to view the historical items

contained within the library. The idea for a communications

library initially began in the 80’s and many previous projects

had attempted to organise something similar. But it was

Chris, a former Chief Yeoman and Communications Instructor

working at Collingwood, who began collating the historical

items back in the early 90’s with a view to bringing the library

to life, with support from fellow Communications Instructor

and good friend Mark Gentry.

Over the years, the library encountered many set backs

including many moves due to the loss of venues. During the

last relocation many of the items Chris had collected ended

scattered around and the library was put at risk of being

lost permanently. Then Chris became seriously ill and had

to retire from his role as an Instructor at Collingwood. Mark

kept him updated from time to time about the library, but the

majority of its contents had ended up in a storage cupboard

and no one was looking after it. Then Warrant Officer (SEA)

Bob Ratcliffe took on the task of documenting the items but

he soon left and Mark agreed to take over the library with a

view to relocating to a new venue.

Sadly, Chris lost his long term battle with Cancer last May

and it was at his service that Mark decided to officially open

the library in memory of his friend.

I just thought I’d email you to let you know that I’ve had a fantastic response to my adverts in the first couple of issues of ‘The Loop’!

Financially, I’ve had well over 1000% return on my

investment which in itself is excellent, but I’d go as far as to say ‘The Loop’ magazine can take a lot of the credit for the most successful start of the year I’ve ever had!

Many thanks to all at ‘The Loop’ magazine. I and all at Rubbish Clearance and Waste Removal are looking forward to the next edition coming to print!

All aboard for a fun family festival at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show01 July 2014 – Today plans are unveiled for the 46th annual PSP Southampton Boat Show. As one of Europe’s biggest maritime exhibitions, guests can explore the marine industry, see new boats for the first time and enjoy the friendly festival atmosphere from Friday 12 September until Sunday 21 September 2014.The PSP Southampton Boat Show is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to banish the back-to-school blues by getting together and enjoying a fun day out. This year’s event will completely transform Mayflower Park with an array of exciting attractions, all located in the purpose-built marina. For the first time in the history of the Show, visitors will be able to take to the air on the new PSP Southampton Boat Show Eye. The Ferris wheel will whisk guests more than 100 feet off the ground for a spectacular 360 degree view of the show and surrounding Southampton area. Once back on land, guests are invited to enjoy the festival-like atmosphere and soak up the live music from the UK’s leading tribute acts, including Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and Elton John. Other attractions available throughout the event include the return of the much loved Try-a-Boat sessions. This free activity will see guests take to the water on their choice of either a yacht, power boat or RIB (rigid inflatable boat). Perfect for everyone, ranging from complete novices to sailing experts, Try-a-Boat is the ideal opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience the thrill of the open sea.

For the more adventurous visitor, activities such as the Challenge 72 Round The World Experience will satisfy their need for speed. This invigorating attraction will see guests climb aboard the off-shore racing boat to take the helm, hoist and trim the sails and grind the winches alongside a team of 11 tenacious sailors.

The PSP Southampton Boat Show has been designed to be fun for all the family, with a vast array of boats and visitor attractions. Last year the PSP Southampton Boat Show had more than 600 exhibitors and saw more than 120 boats make their debut, including 30 world firsts, 48 UK launches and three European exclusives, with this year set to be even bigger!”

The International Ocean Film Festival is set to make a splash!UK audiences

will be able

to immerse

themselves in the

wonders of the

ocean without

getting their

feet wet as the

International Ocean Film Festival hits theatres for the first

time this Autumn.

The festival, which originates in Australia, will feature a

selection of the world’s most captivating ocean-themed short

films and will be shown in 17 towns and cities across the UK.

Designed to mesmerise and enthral, the International

Ocean Film Festival showcases more than two hours

of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s

surface. The films document the beauty and power of the

ocean, and celebrate the divers, surfers, swimmers and

oceanographers who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase

the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the

big blue.

Heart-stopping

shots of surfers

riding wild waves

and adrenalin-

inducing

scenes of divers

swimming with

white sharks will leave audiences on the edges of their

seats. The films also encourage viewers to dive head first

into ocean culture as the festival is filled with touching

interviews and insightful narrations from the characters

whose lives are inspired by the ocean.

Each of the festival’s films conveys a deep respect and

appreciation for the world’s oceans and the creatures that

call them home.

The festival visits Portsmouth King’s Theatre on 23

September.

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, 2 – 9 August 2014A highlight on the south coast this summer will undoubtedly be one of Britain’s oldest and best-loved sporting events. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week (2 -9 August 2014) is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. Not only is the regatta one of the longest-running and most spectacular events in British sporting history, it is also free to the public attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. With up to 1,000 boats and 8,000 competitors ranging from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors taking part there is plenty of action on the Solent which can be enjoyed from ashore or onboard spectator boat. The best location to watch the starts shore-side is the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons – beware of the loud bangs with each race being started under cannon fire! Here you can see who got the best start and which boats were over the line. You can also hear the race officers giving their countdowns and calling the starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron battlements. The racing can also be enjoyed from close quarters aboard a spectator boat with bookings possible via the event website. Discounts for family tickets apply. In addition to enjoying watching the racing, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes week also offers a packed schedule of shore-side activities

including live music throughout the town from early afternoon each day. Marquees are erected in the marinas serving food and drink, and the crowds overflow from busy pubs and restaurants around the narrow high street - the town becomes a hive of activity into the early hours of each morning. The vibrant atmosphere makes Cowes a great day and evening out for family and friends.

Family Day (Sunday 3 August)Now a regular feature of the regatta, Family Day offers a range of family-friendly activities. In addition to spot prizes being awarded to families racing together, flag-making colouring and painting competitions, and special Family Day discounts on the spectator boat trips and RIB rides, this year there will also be a performance of Wind in the Willows and an outdoor cinema at Northwood House. Circus skills and musical theatre workshops at Cowes Yacht Haven will provide fun for all, as well as air guitar competitions and much more on Cowes Parade, courtesy of Jack FM. You can even buy a special Family Day hamper from The Food Hamper in Cowes.

Ladies Day (Thursday 7 August)Celebrating women in sailing, Ladies Day was first introduced at the regatta in 2006. In recognition of an outstanding contribution, commitment, or achievement of women in sailing the Ladies Day Trophy is awarded as part of the day’s celebrations - nominations are now being accepted on the event website.

Fareham Town FC looking for youth recruits

Fareham Town FC Youth and Mini Soccer schools would like

to invite children to join their ever growing seventeen teams

with the Portsmouth Youth League. Starting from ages six

up to sixteen, it’s a fantastic opportunity for children to have

some fun or start their dream to become a footballer.

Included in Fareham Town FC Mini Soccer are the Apollo

Stars team, managed by Matthew Nash, who is a FA qualified

coach with enhanced CRB, runs training sessions for children

between the ages 9 and 12 years of age with additional special

needs. These sessions take place on a Saturday morning from

10am to 11am in a safe and enclosed environment. Fareham

Town Mini Soccer believes it is important to have football for

all children, even those with additional special needs. It is

beneficial for the children and the parents knowing they have

a safe place where they will be looked after and ultimately

have fun learning new skills.

All their volunteering managers and coaches are FA qualified

with CRB, mostly parents who have their own children joining

in, so it’s a safe environment for your children with great

community spirit.

This past season, the under 10’s, managed by Simon

Hurst, won the Portsmouth Youth League Fair Play award,

a fantastic recognition of good sporting behaviour or other

actions by people or bodies involved in Portsmouth Youth

League Football.

If you have always had an interest in football and would

like the opportunity to manage a team at Fareham Town

Mini Soccer, they have a managerial vacancy for their under

7’s team. Training takes place twice a week, this includes

weekends and you will be required to undergo a CRB check.

You will then have the opportunity to pass your FA Coach

level one qualification.

Fareham Town Youth and Mini Soccer are always looking to

improve and develop skills within the club, therefore they have

an exciting new position available for a Football Development

Officer, available to any individual who currently holds FA

Coaching levels 2 or 3.

Fareham Town FC Youth and Mini Soccer host their

tournament on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July where they

will be playing teams within the Portsmouth Youth League,

please contact Michelle Dove if you would like to find out

more.

A great family afternoon activity is to watch the Fareham

Town FC first team in action when the season starts at home

at Cams Alders. The club have taken the deliberate decision

to concentrate on setting up a youth section and becoming

a far more community orientated club than they have been

in the past and have been awarded FA Charter Standard

Status for both Youth and Adult sections. Already some of last

season’s Under 16 squad have made their first team debut

with several more expected to feature in the future. If your

Driving growth and prosperity for business in Hampshire

In February this year, Stewart Dunn was appointed CEO

of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, having extensive

business knowledge accumulated through a career in

Regional Newspapers, which started as a management

trainee in the North of England.

These undoubtedly are exciting times for Hampshire

Chamber of Commerce, as business across the UK is

feeling more confident about economic growth. The

Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is now one of the

largest business representational groups in the County,

combining the influence, strength and expertise of the

County’s three former Chambers into a single entity,

which is accredited by the British Chamber of Commerce

and benefit from their support. With four offices across

Hampshire, it engages with an enormous range of

support services and products to cater to businesses of

all sizes and sectors.

“Frankly, I have been overwhelmed by the level

of business engagement that the Chamber offers.

In addition, the events programme of networking is

unparalleled, as the example of a recent event was

Introducing Stewart Dunn, Chief Executive Officer of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce

my first ‘Meet the Chamber’ held in Southampton that

attracted no less than 250 attendees at the St Mary’s

Stadium” - Stewart Dunn declared in a recent interview

after being appointed CEO.

His vision for the future of Hampshire Chamber driving

growth and prosperity for business is strongly connected

to the unprecedented partnering of national business

support organisations - the Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Business Alliance (HIBA). As well as raising awareness

of support services for local business under the auspices

of the newly created Solent Growth Hub. Likewise, Future

Solent’s programme of Low Carbon initiative support for

business with grants and loans has started to make an

impact with its first round of investment panel making

strategic decisions for funding that will create low carbon

jobs and economic growth in the Solent LEP area.

Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is pushing ahead

at the very forefront of a revolution in business support,

with its International Trade department working with

UKTI to support local business looking to do business/

trade internationally, representing its member’s interests

and providing a ‘Voice’ when collaborating with Local

Authorities, and benefiting from having dedicated and

passionate staff.

Looking forward, Stewart Dunn is working towards

a collaborative approach, a new and fresh image for

Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and is dedicated

to encouraging youth employment and to increase the

number of apprenticeships within the local business

community.

In his own words: “I am excited by the prospect of

leading the Chamber forward through these exciting

times, and would like to take the opportunity of thanking

all those involved in taking our organisation forward on

this remarkable journey”.

shortfiction

Although some are inclined to dismiss him as a mere idler, Bertram Wooster does have what you might call hidden depths. His is a mind open to new ideas. As the Good Book advises, “Whatsoever things are of good report, think on these things.” And so he does, often sharing his thoughts with others.

“Jeeves,” I said, as the trusty fellow glided in with the breakfast tray, “I’ve been thinking.”

“Indeed, sir?” “Yes, Jeeves, and my thoughts have not

been of the happy variety, forcing me to conclude that I am a thoughtless blighter.” I paused. “I suppose that’s a sort of… What is it that that’s a sort of, Jeeves? I think it begins with a p.”

“A paradox, sir.” “That’s the word. Thank you, Jeeves.

Tell me, what do you know about this political correctness thingy?”

“Only that it is a code of conduct with an alleged tendency to go mad, sir.”

“Pay no heed to the mockers, Jeeves. It is about fairness and equality. Above all, it is about considering the other person’s feelings, and I’m afraid the Wooster performance in the PC department has been way below par. For instance, I’ve often called chaps at the Drones’ Club imbeciles, numbskulls, fatheads and such like. I now realize that to speak of the mentally challenged in this way is hurtful and unacceptable.”

“I am sure that such badinage, coming from yourself, sir, would have been received by the other young gentlemen in a spirit of mutual camaraderie.”

I shoved a forkful of succulent kippered herring into the oral cavity, pondering the while. “Are you saying, Jeeves, that a bunch of fatheads don’t mind being called fatheads, provided their accuser is a bona fide fathead himself?”

“Any such implication would be an impertinence on my part, sir. I merely suggest that you are overestimating the sensitivity of your companions.”

I took a sip of coffee and did some more pondering. Jeeves was probably right. You can’t have a massive brain like his and not be right most of the time. That

said, he can be a bit of a stick-in-the-mud. He is reluctant to embrace change, preferring to keep it at arm’s length for as long as possible.

“With regard to my fellow Drones, Jeeves,” I said, “you may have a point. However, my flippant attitude towards the more seriously disturbed has been less excusable. I have even stooped to calling their devoted therapist, Sir Roderick Glossop, the eminent nerve specialist, a loony-doctor.”

“Surely not to his face, sir?”“Good heavens, no! The very idea of

going up to that glowering, bushy-browed old dispenser of the straitjacket and - dash it, there I go again! The road to political correctness contains many a pot-hole. Take women, Jeeves.”

“Sir?”“Here too I have fallen short. I have

spoken of fillies, cuties, bimbos and babes; even, I blush to add, of totty. I have laughed at mother-in-law jokes. Tell me, have you read Equality Must Always Come First by Jocasta Finkelstein?

“No, sir.” His reply bucked me up no end. I’d

actually read a book – an intellectual sort of book – that Jeeves hadn’t; because, you see, Jeeves reads loads of serious literature, even including philosophy. Only the other day he was speaking of some Teutonic cove named Nietzsche who wrote about a chap named Zarathustra who said things and, if I’ve remembered it correctly, went on to produce the Superman films.

“So you’ve not read Ms Finkelstein’s book, then, Jeeves?” I said, rubbing it in a little.

“No, sir. I did, however, read several reviews of the work. Miss Finkelstein, it seems, is a surprisingly clever young lady, though of a somewhat embittered disposition. An authoress who – “

I raised an open hand to interrupt him, causing the kipper-charged fork the hand had been holding to fall into the milk jug. I wasn’t going to let that faze me; after all, it’s not every day one gets the chance to put Jeeves right.

“A surprisingly clever young lady! Ha! Ms Finkelstein would spurn the epithet.

Do I mean epithet, Jeeves, or is it a similar sort of word?”

“No, sir, epithet is quite correct.”“Why should cleverness be surprising

in a young woman? Endeavour not to be condescending, Jeeves.”

“Very good, sir. I will fetch a fresh jug of milk and, with your permission, offer the contents of this one to the elderly lady in the ground floor apartment. She owns a cat – a large grey tabby. Kipper-flavoured milk could well prove a delicacy to the feline palate.”

He wasn’t getting off that easily. “Wait. Nor, Jeeves, must we speak of authoresses; nor for that matter of actresses, comediennes, or poetesses. Ms Finkelstein – and please note the Ms – is very clear about that. Complete equality of the sexes is what she demands, and what I say is: Why not? After all, apart from… well… certain basic differences, men and women are basically the same, so to speak.”

The finely chiselled features were respectfully indicating that the Wooster eloquence had failed to convince. “You are not convinced, Jeeves,” I said.

“No, sir. Whilst there are forms of discrimination which can never be justified, it should always be remembered that the male and female psyches are endowed with somewhat different qualities.”

“I hope you’re not going to speak of comparing apples with oranges, Jeeves. Ms Finkelstein refutes that old argument by reminding us that men and women are not items of fruit.”

“Nevertheless, the analogy is not altogether inappropriate, sir. The less admirable aspects of the female temperament have been depicted – perhaps a trifle harshly – by Pope in his Epistle entitled, Of the Characters of Women, whereas their finer qualities – “

I raised a fork-free hand. (We Woosters do not make the same mistake twice.) “Dash it all, Jeeves, the Pope can hardly be regarded as the ultimate authority on the whole of womankind. Nuns, I grant you; female saints, certainly; but most women are neither nuns nor saints.”

Bertie Stands CorrectedBy Terry Parsons

Page 33: Issue 6 of LOOP

The LOOP | [email protected]

“Very true, sir. However, I was not referring to His Holiness, but to Alexander Pope, the eighteenth-century poet.”

“Pope… Poet… Let’s see… didn’t he write a thingy about someone doing something pretty beastly to a keyhole or something?”

“I can only surmise, sir, that you are thinking of his mock-heroic poem The Rape of the Lock, which in fact tells of a young lady’s fury when one of her curled tresses is cut off and appropriated by an over-ardent admirer.”

“Ah yes, it’s coming back to me now… And this Pope… wasn’t he a dwarfish little blighter? A… a vertically challenged person, I meant to say.”

“Indeed, his height is reckoned to have been no more than four feet six inches, sir.”

“So, not much in demand on the dance floor, I should imagine. Probably made him a bit of a mis… mis… What is the word I want, Jeeves - a fellow who can’t stand the female of the species at any price?”

“A misogynist, sir. Will that be all, sir? I need to take the heather-mixture lounge suit and several other items to the dry-cleaning establishment.”

“Not quite all, Jeeves, for we have now arrived at the crux of this discourse, so pray attend closely. The Finkelstein book has been lent to me by a Ms Harriet Paxton, whom I met at one of Aunt Agatha’s little get-togethers. A get-together I had tried to get out of, luckily without success, for Ms Paxton is as beautiful as she is brainy - blue eyes and a perfect profile. Today we meet for lunch, over which the book is due to be discussed in some detail. But, and here’s the rub, Jeeves: which one of us should pick up the restaurant bill?”

The finely chiselled features now wore an expression of astonishment, mingled with disappointment. “Surely, sir, when a gentleman invites a lady to lunch he naturally assumes the role of host and therefore – “

“Yes of course he does. But I didn’t. Invite her to lunch. She invited me, and why not? Equality and all that. The question is: just how far do her notions of equality extend? If I pull out the wallet at the time of reckoning, will she accuse me of playing the dominant male? On the other hand, if I don’t, will she think me a shameless sponger? Separate bills?

Fine, if she suggests it, but what if she doesn’t? Can you advise, Jeeves?”

“Does Miss Finkelstein offer no enlightenment, sir?”

Now, rightly or wrongly, I had come to regard his continued use of “Miss” as an act of defiance, which explains why my reply was a trifle testy. “No, Jeeves, she does not. She is the theorist, the visionary; she deals with the broad outlines, so to speak. The minutiae, if minutiae is the word I want, she leaves to lesser mortals.”

Tactless, I admit – sounded like I’d ranked the great brain of Jeeves below that of Finkelstein - but the fellow had annoyed me.

“I regret that I have no suggestions to offer, sir.” His tone was decidedly chilly.

“But this isn’t like you, Jeeves. You can think of no scheme or course of action?” My voice betrayed my disappointment, for I had been counting on the man.

“No, sir.” After a longish pause, he added, “Might I take the liberty of asking, sir, whether you really enjoyed Miss Finkelstein’s book?”

“It’s not exactly the sort of book one enjoys, Jeeves; it is an improving book, requiring effort on the part of the reader.”

“Quite so, sir.”“Well, if you can’t help me,” I mused,

“I shall try to have a discreet word with the head waiter. Assuming there is one, because no particular restaurant was mentioned; in fact, I rather got the impression that Ms Paxton regards food merely as a necessary fuel. Intellectuals are often like that - their thoughts are on higher things and that makes them… “

My voice trailed off because I suddenly had a brilliant idea. “I’ve got it, Jeeves! Listen: many’s the time you’ve rustled up a spot of lunch for myself and a pal. Perhaps restaurants could be avoided altogether if you would oblige me by – “

But he was already shaking his head. “I am afraid that would be out of the question, sir.”

“Just plain wholesome fare, Jeeves. As I say, she is certainly no gourmet.”

“No, sir. I should not feel comfortable serving lunch to an unchaperoned young lady in a bachelor apartment.”

Well, you could have knocked Bertram down with a feather! I mean to say! Bally cheek, what? “But, Jeeves, you know me – the Code of the Woosters and all that. Let me tell you, a poetry-loving female

once called me “a very parfit gentil knight” – she was quoting Shakespeare, I think.”

“Chaucer, sir. Your own character is, of course, not in question, but the young lady’s reputation could be harmed. People talk, sir, often with a lax regard to veracity.”

A bit of a stick-in-the-mud did I say? Well, add hidebound and strait-laced for good measure!

“Dash it all, Jeeves! Really, in this day and age! I mean to say! Surely a free-minded, free-spirited young woman should be free to… has every right to…” But I could see that it was no use. The finely chiselled f’s remained impassive.

“Very well, Jeeves,” I said with icy dignity, “I suppose I shall just have to hope for the best, and if the worst should occur…”

“The worst being that that young lady might not be inclined to take you out to lunch again, sir?”

“Now look here, Jeeves, I don’t much care for the way you put that.”

“Nor, I should imagine, would she be likely to prescribe any more books of an improving nature – a grim prospect indeed, sir.”

He didn’t really think the prospect a grim one at all. He was employing… it’s a word something like iron... ironish? No… irony - yes, that’s the one – he was employing irony. Anyway, after mulling things over for a bit, I could see that perhaps he did have a point. All of Bertram’s past associations with brainy females had ended rather abruptly; usually, it has to be said, to the relief of both parties. The Finkelstein book had been pretty heavy going and, to tell the truth, I’d skipped quite a lot of it. Yes, Ms Paxton certainly possessed a lovely profile; but, when all’s said and done, does a chap look at a girl sideways all that often? Of course I admired her mind no end, but was there ever likely to be any true meeting of our minds? Could either mind undertake the necessary journey, so to speak?

“Oh, well, I suppose even the worst wouldn’t be the end of the world, Jeeves.”

“Scarcely that, sir.”“No, scarcely that… In fact, nowhere

near that really… Did you say something about fresh milk?”

“I will fetch it immediately, sir.”

Talisman Helps Celebrates The Strawberry Heritage of the AreaThe Talisman is a friendly pub-restaurant located on the edge of Southampton, owned by local brewer & pub operator ‘Hall & Woodhouse’ - one of the few remaining regional family brewers who have been brewing their award-winning Badger beers in Dorset and offering warm hospitality in their pubs for over 230 years. The Talisman - named after a type of strawberry, popular in the 1970’s and one of the top 5 most beautifully flavoured strawberries of all time - used to be a barn depot for the local strawberry trade, storing the fruit prior to it being dispatched across the country. The strawberry industry hit its peak in the 1920s, strawberries would be transported from the fields to barns and then onto waiting trains by horse and cart. One of the last reminders of this can be seen in a rail on the outside edge of what is now the pavement leading down the hill to the station. This was used to line up the wheels of the horse-drawn carts, so as to enable easy unloading of the carts. Today the Talisman has a nicely enclosed, well maintained south facing garden with lots of plants where guests can relax with a pint of Badger Beer or one of the tempting dishes from the pubs extensive menu. Inside you will find roaring log fires and oak beams which give a traditional English Inn atmosphere - cosy in the winter and fresh in the summer.Links back to the Talisman’s past can be seen in various locations throughout the pub; outside you will find the lyrics to “Strawberry Fields” by Lennon & McCartney written on the side of the pub and a picture of the Talisman Strawberry takes pride of place on the pubs swing sign. Inside a large painting depicting the strawberry farmers collecting the harvest takes pride of place.Perhaps aptly for a pub named after a variety of Strawberry the menu at the Talisman uses ingredients sourced from regional food partners, typically from family businesses like Hall & Woodhouse, who provide the pub

with quality ingredients that their team of talented chefs then use to create fresh, unpretentious, seasonal dishes.Although strawberries are still grown in the area, much of the land once used is now covered with houses. The history of the Strawberry farmers is still remembered though with the Talisman being one of numerous references to the strawberry trade in the area.Situated on the edge of Southampton the Talisman boasts a large car park, secluded garden and is convenient for West Quay in Southampton, Gunwharf Quays at Portsmouth, Whiteley Village outlet centre and the M27.

The Great British Space Dinner: UK students invited to design a meal fit for an astronaut

The UK Space Agency launched a competition in June for

school children between the ages of 7 and 14 to design a

British-inspired, balanced and exciting meal for British ESA

astronaut Tim Peake to eat during his 6 month mission to the

International Space Station (ISS).

The winning contestants will be invited to develop their

ideas further with celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, and

these ideas will be turned into real space food that will be

launched to the ISS. They will also be invited to an event

that will include a live link up with Tim during his stay on the

ISS.

Tim said: “This is a great opportunity to get people thinking

about nutrition and healthy eating. I’m really excited that I’ll

be able to eat a ‘Great British Space Dinner’ onboard the

space station and for me it will be a very special link back to

planet Earth!

“I think that by blending the creativity from the competition

38 | The LOOP www.loopmagazine.net

and Heston’s expertise we can produce something that

is not just fun, healthy and tasty but also food that will be

really important for the future of space travel.”

The competition is supported by a set of education

resources to support learning, using the context of space

to explain nutrition and the importance of good diet.

Heston said:

“I’m unbelievably excited to be designing a delicious

meal for Tim to enjoy in space; there are some real

challenges ahead, things aren’t quite the same up there!

I’m really looking forward to seeing some incredible

suggestions by the kids, and getting started on creating

something that Tim will love up there in space.”

Children had to design a British-inspired meal for Tim

to eat in space, taking account of normal nutritional

principles as well as the constraints of space (such as

handling, packaging and preservation).

A team of judges, which will include Tim Peake, Heston

Blumenthal and experts from the British Nutritional

Foundation, will select the best entries from both the

primary and secondary school age categories this month.

They will be looking for fun and healthy menus that

excite Tim, have an element of Britishness, and have the

potential to be transformed into a space dinner that could

be flown to the ISS.

Getting a space career: Andrew’s Story

Andrew Winnard got a space career after studying for a

Physiotherapy degree at Sheffield Hallam University.

While doing his dissertation on the Effectiveness of

Countermeasures to Protect against muscle loss in Microgravity

Environments he attended a workshop and met contacts at

the European Space Agency’s Exercise Support Team and UK

Space Biomedicine Association.

In spring of that year he was invited by the ESA to apply for

a place on their 2011 student workshop and was

accepted in early summer.

Andrew was later accepted onto an internship

at the ESA while studying for an MSc in Applying

Physiotherapy. After completing his MSc he

represented ESA on an operational crew medical

support panel and was awarded the Space

Medicine Association’s Scholarship for being their

“Outstanding Student of Space Medicine in 2013”.

Andrew is now working in Newcastle as a PhD

candidate developing the Functional Readaptive

Exercise Device. It is a device which is intended

to rehabilitate local spinal stability muscles in

populations including astronauts post space

flight, low back pain sufferers and age related

deconditioning.

In 2013 he was elected co-chair of the UKSBA

during a time when it is merging with another UK

Space Biomedicine group which has more career

professional members.

You need mortgage and personal financial advice that starts from a complete understanding of where you are and where you want to go.

You want an adviser with access to the north, south, east and west of the financial services market, and who can guide you through all of its pathways.

At Compass, we put you at the centre of everything that we do. We don’t just show you the right direction, we walk it with you. We make sure you reach your destination.

If you can see the point of Compass, please contact us today for a detailed, confidential and without-obligation discussion of your mortgage and personal financial needs.

For arranging a mortgage, a fee of £350 or 0.5% of the loan amount (if greater) is payable on completion. Typically this will be £350. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

N e w Ta x Ye a r – n e w o p p o r t u n i t i e sThere are a number of very good reasons why tax payers should plan to prepare and submit their tax returns as soon as possible.

The Enquiry WindowThe HM Revenue & Customs have twelve months from the date of submission of the tax return to open an enquiry into it.Prompt submission of the tax return means that the tax return can be considered closed earlier.

Tax repaymentsIf you have overpaid income tax the tax repayment claim will be actioned quickly.

Payments on accountIf you are unfortunate enough to have to make tax payments on account, preparing the tax return earlier means that that the payments on account can be based on actual figures as opposed to the previous tax years tax liability.

Budgeting

Preparing the tax return promptly enables taxpayers to budget on how they are going to pay the tax liability.

PAYE coding Notices

Early submission of the tax return will result in a more accurate

PAYE coding notice being used against their earnings.

Lost documents

Prompt attention to tax return documents does not guarantee that documents will never get lost but while you are looking for them you can relax in the knowledge that the tax return has been submitted and the potential £1,300 penalty avoided.

If you need help or advice on preparing and submitting your tax return Moore McCusker can be contacted on [email protected] or by calling 01489 247047.
