I am immensely glad with the way Hopscotch works. This being my rst time, I am awestruck at the way children express their talents. Hopscotch is back with lot of creativity showcasing the talents of our students. I am also glad to be a part of the Hopscotch team which works with a sense of commitment and duty. Hopscotch works at making reading fun. It vividly captures the memories of Anita Methodist. I am sure you will have a fun lled time, reading Hopscotch. Happy reading!

THE CHENNAI FLOODS CHAOS IN THE CITY

Chennai was ocially declared a disaster area on the evening of

nd2 December. With a letup in rainfall, ood waters gradually began to recede

thin Chennai on 4 December, though 40 percent of the city's districts remained submerged and safe food and drinking water remained in short supply.

Though relief eorts were well underway across most of the area by rd3 December, the lack of any coordinated relief response in North Chennai

forced thousands of its residents to evacuate on their own. People from various districts attempted to ee the stricken region by bus or train and travel to their family homes.

Chennai International Airport was thpartly reopened for cargo ights on 5

December, with passenger ights scheduled to resume from the following morning.

thBy 6 December, rescue eorts had largely concluded and relief eorts were intensifying, with the Chennai Corporation beginning to disburse relief packages.

Mobile, banking and power services were gradually being restored; fuel and food supplies were getting through, the airport had fully reopened and rail services were slowly resuming.

Page 9: Issue: 6 April 2016 · Issue: 6 April 2016 Spectrum of Events Glimpses of India Bon Voyage Graduation Day Contents : Editorial Shades of joy Poem Articles Achievers

Many city neighbourhoods, however, remained ooded for few more days with some lacking basic necessities. With the city slowly beginning to recover, state and national health ocials remained watchful against disease outbreaks, warning that conditions were right for epidemics of water-borne illnesses to occur.

C h e n n a i C o r p o r a t i o n ocials reported at least 57,000 homes in the city had suered structural damage, mostly those of working c l a s s p i n c o d e s . S t a t e housing boards said they w o u l d c o n d u c t s a f e t y inspections of both public and residential buildings. After being closed for the past month, schools and

thcolleges across the aected more than a month began to reopen from 14 December.

thRelief operations were largely wound up by 19 December.

The oods caused havoc in our school. Apart from being closed for 33 days, we suered extensive losses as most of our ground oor classrooms were under ve feet water. However, thanks to the t i r e l e s s e o r t o f t h e s u p p o r t s t a a n d administrative sta, the

thschool reopened on 14 December, 2016 to receive children.

STUDENTS EXCHANGE PROGRAMME 6.11.15

Four students from Greijdanus School, Netherlands arrived in India for three weeks Student's Exchange Programme. They were welcomed in our Indian style. These were the third batch of students visiting us. A detailed programme had been drawn to engage the students. Apart from regular classes with our students, they had art lessons, Indian history presentations, cooking lessons, training in singing tamil songs, and interactive sessions with our students. Apart from cricket lessons they watched a game of cricket at Chepauk stadium. Living in Indian households gave them a ne taste of our hospitality. It was a moving moment when we bid farewell to them.

A warm and hearty welcome

Enjoyable moments with Pim, Wilbert, Tamera and Christel

HISTORY OF OUR NATIONAL FLAG

The history of the Indian Flag dates back to the pre-independence era. The rst Indian ag came into being during 1904-1906. It was created by an Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda. It had the words 'BondeMatoram' written in Bengali on it. The ag contained a Vajra (weapon of god Indra) and a white lotus in the middle. The 'Vajra' is a symbol of strength and lotus depicts purity.

Then came the Madam Bhikaji Rustom Cama's ag which was designed by Madam Bhikaji Cama. The ag consisted of three colours green, saron and red.

In 1921 Gandhi wanted all the communities of India to be represented on the ag of the nation. Therefore a new ag was formed. It had three colours white which represented the minor communities, red which represented the Hindu community and green was for the Muslims and Sikhs. The 'Charkha' was drawn to represent the unication of all the communities.

In the year 1906, the second ag was created. It had three equal strips of green, yellow and red. The red strip had two symbols a sun, and a star o n a c r e s c e n t . T h e y e l l o w s t r i p h a d 'VandeMataram' written on it.

In 1917 The Home Rule League formed by BalaGangadharTilak created a new ag with four blue strips and ve red strips. It had seven stars on it. It also had a crescent moon and a star at the top y end. This ag did not gain popularity among the masses.

Page 16: Issue: 6 April 2016 · Issue: 6 April 2016 Spectrum of Events Glimpses of India Bon Voyage Graduation Day Contents : Editorial Shades of joy Poem Articles Achievers

In 1931, people were still not satised with the ag and their communal representation. Hence a new ag of three colours was designed saron, white and green with the Charkha in the middle.

In 1947 when India got independence, a committee headed by Rajendra Prasad was formed to discuss the National Flag of India and they decided to adopt the ag of Indian National Congress, with suitable modications, as the ag of India. As a result, the ag of 1931 was adopted as Indian ag but 'Charkha' in the middle was replaced by 'Chakra' (wheel) and hence our National Flag came into being.

Bon Voyage

I thank God for giving me this wonderful opportunity of being part of the rst teachers exchange program to Greijdanus in the Netherlands. I owe my thanks to the Management Of Anita Methodist school and Mr.Martin Jan de Jang, Director of Greijdanus for the chance given to me.

It was a thrilling experience to travel by ight for the rst time. During the travel I praised God seeing His glory revealed through nature at such altitude. 11th January was our rst day to Greijdanus and the Indian ag was hoisted in their campus. We felt it was an honour not only to represent our school but our country also.

We had presentations on India and the Aid Project. We visited dierent departments during our stay of two weeks at school. We engaged in discussions on areas of mutual interest like Administration, Christian Identity, Mentorship, Religious Studies, Academics and Care Department. We were impressed by the dedication of teachers who facilitate the children to think and explore. They also inculcate ownership of learning in students consciously.

'Night of Signicance' was a remarkable night where children of Greijdanus spent the whole night in school to raise money to support the underprivileged children in Anita Methodist school. I'm sure this will bring a dierence in the lives of a hundred children who will be beneted through the Care Project.

I will ever cherish the stay with the host families (Mr.Martin Jan De Jang and Mr.Yohan). I felt at home as they saw that I was comfortable during the stay. The stay in Hannie's place was also a memorable one. We really enjoyed the rst experience of snow and learnt to cook some Dutch food.

We visited many places including Amsterdam. We had an experience of going through the canal in a boat and marveled at the architecture of the buildings. We attended a church service at Hattem where we had a warm and a special prayer for Anita Methodist School. After my visit to the Netherlands I feel responsible to contribute more intensively for the progress of the school.

It was a life changing experience and an exposure to a dierent educational system. As Psalm 126:3 says, 'The Lord has done great things for us, whereof we are glad'.

Have you ever wondered what is to a take break from your monotonous life and doing something that you love, in a foreign land? That was what Anita Methodist gifted me on this new year.As Romans 8:28 says, 'And we know that God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose'. Truly God worked something good for me as I am called according to His purpose to serve in this school .The Netherlands A land basically built on water with 17 billion inhabitants is famous for many things beyond their brilliant engineering. The windmill, tulips, dykes and snow does not stop them from being pretty. The Dutch fancy bikes, make their body t and keep the environment pollution free. Their major food is potato and they can live on coee. The Night for India as they call it was truly a night of signicance. The kids from Greijdanus came forward to help us raise money for the students of Anita Methodist. We were taken care by our exchange students. It was a great pleasure to stay with my host family. Yes, the Dutch are denitely warm people living in a cold land.I had many opportunities to observe the teaching methods practiced there. The streaming of students amazed me. Here the students were grouped into three dierent streams based on their IQ level . Students have more hands on experience in the dierent well equipped laboratories. More than 100 well trained sta, most of them part time teachers facilitate the children to excel in their learning.Cubic Mile is a students collaborative project, which we have been engaging for past one year with Greijdanus. As a part of this project the students of Anita Methodist and Greijdanus learn about the various aspects of one Cubic mile space around their schools and exchange their learnings. In this coming year we have planned to introduce Cubic Miles project as an evening club .To enrich my expertise to run this club I participate in a workshop on Cubic Miles by Mr.Eric while I was in Netherlands .This project sensitises students to respect their environment. The Teachers Exchange Programme-2016 inspired me to become a better teacher and it was undoubtedly a life changing experience.

Psalm 113:7, 8 says, 'He raises the poor from the dust.and seats them with princes'. In that way I'm blessed and privileged to visit a country miles away a land, I never dreamt of stepping into. Truly God has placed me among princes. It was a great learning experience, an eye opener to my way of thinking and reasoning. I was really impressed about the social behavior of people in the Netherlands. When they meet each other, they greet warmly, even the strangers with a happy smile. Everybody obeys the trac rules and share the responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of the city. They are conscious about their food habits and lead a healthy life style. The most exciting thing in the Netherlands is their climate. They get snowfall, rain, mist, fog and sun all in a day. They are blessed with beautiful nature and bountiful resources. This trip has impacted my life in many ways. I've learnt to plan my work and manage time more eciently. I'm inspired to teach my subject in a more engaging manner keeping in mind, the importance of activities in class room to develop thinking and reasoning skills. I have also become more conscious of the type of food that we need to choose for a healthy life style. I am amazed to see that they love themselves and that made me realize that I have to spend more time for myself and rework my hobbies. Anita Methodist School has always believed in discovering innate potentials and grooming them. This school has also identied my potential and trusted me with a great responsibility. I hope at Anita Methodist School, I will put to use the learning I gained from Greijdanus School and share in the responsibility of child centered education.I thank the Lord and the Management for this great opportunity which I will cherish all my life.

GRADUATION DAY

Graduation Day is a milestone in the life of our Kindergarten children who step into the primary level. The program was held on 11th March 2016. Our nursery kids took a proud walk down the aisle along with their class teachers. Mrs. MaliniLamech, retired teacher of C.S.I. Bain school was the Chief Guest. The kids of the lower Kindergarten enacted a play titled 'Ordinary becomes Extra-ordinary'. Parents of our U.K.G. students who shared their views about the school made a special mention of the Christian ethos of the school and the friendly nature of the teachers. The program ended on a happy note with the distribution of graduation certicates.

FAREWELL

After years of spending most of their waking hours in the campus, class XII students prepared to y from their nests on their farewell function. The school bid a nostalgic adieu to its senior class in a solemn service. (As the teachers stood around the students and sang 'God be with you till we meet again' both the taught and the teachers had moist eyes). The Chief guest for the evening Mrs.Pearl Vincent spoke to the students about following their heart and putting their best into that chase with help from God.
