EDITORFROM THE

WHAT WERE YOU DOING ON YOUR VERY FIRST BIRTHDAY??? I was probably crying, but not this time around… This summer marks our one year anniversary and I am happy that I am still “INSPIRED” to continue on.

Last July I got an out of the blue call from my now great friend Tony Cooper, asking me what I was up to. I mentioned the idea of the magazine, but never thought that a year later we’d still be work-ing together on Canada’s one and only positive entertainment & lifestyle magazines. Tony has helped the magazine on so many levels, too nu-merous to mention.

But we couldn’t do it alone… We are grateful to be blessed with a great team of people who also see and share in the vision with us; From Jamie out in the east coast heading up our advertising department; To Tanya in the office handling all the administration and finances.; To the lovely AshleyAmanda. holding down the fashion sec-tion; to all the other writers, photographers, ad-vertisers and contributors. It wouldn’t be possible without all of you.

And lastly a very special Thank you goes out to all of our readers… Continue to Get INSPIRED! And be sure to reach out to us and tell us what you want to see. We are here for you.I am happy to be on this wonderful journey with you all.

ThIRD DAY hAs MADE hIsToRY BY BEINg ThE FIRsT ChRIsTIAN BAND to be featured on the cover of Billboard Magazine. This honour comes prior to the release of their highly-anticipated album Revelation. Third Day’s signature rock sounds gets an infusion of new energy thanks to new management from Red Light Manage-ment (Dave Matthews Band, Alanis Morissette, Good Charlotte)and the band’s new collabo-ration with producer Howard Benson (Daugh-try, Flyleaf, Hoobastank, P.O.D.). The first single, “Call My Name”, has claimed a spot in the Top 5 on Radio & Records’ Christian AC chart. It is also in the Top 5 at Christian AC radio, after it had already become the highest-ever debut for a Third Day single on the chart. Revelation also features guest vocals by Lacey Mosely of Flyleaf, Chris Daughtry and Robert Randolph.

you have to speak out, and that’s what I’m doing.” The first of the video’s which can be found on line at www.moveon.org sees Cu-sack give a pop quiz to determine if voters can find a difference between George Bush and John McCain. Cusack asks a series of questions including “Who supports keeping our troops in harm’s way in Iraq but not the bipartisan G.I. bill of rights to support them when they return home?” and “Who apposed healthcare for uninsured children last year?” the answer he says is “both”.

CANADA’s TWo LARgEsT ECoNoMIEs, oNTAR-Io AND QUEBEC, held a historic joint cabinet meeting where they signed a memorandum of understanding on a regional “cap and trade”

system that will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and combat cli-mate change. Big polluters that exceed those

FEATURE

INsPIRED Magazine: Firstly, congratulations on the release of your new album, “Hawk Nelson… Is My Friend”, which debuted at your highest Billboard Top 100 ranking to date. Can you give our readers a snapshot of this album and what might separate it from your previous projects?DANIEL BIRo: Hawk Nelson Is My Friend is our way of trying to say thank-you to all who have faithfully supported us over the past 5 years. We feel that we’ve made some pretty good friendships along the way and are truly grateful for each and every person. It’s funny that some people still think Hawk Nelson is a dude…. and the title definitely reinforces that false perception! But I think if you compare this album to our previ-ous two, you will hear songwriting growth as well as sonic growth.IM: Amy Grant… I can’t pass up the opportunity to ask about that! For the readers that don’t know, you guys had the privilege of recording the bonus track “one Little Miracle” for the Special Edition, featuring Amy Grant. How did this come about and what was it like working with such a long stand-ing, accomplished veteran of the industry?DB: Our vocalist Jason grew up on Christian music and this just seemed like one of those life long goals that we needed a checkmark for. More than just an awesome opportunity though, this woman Amy is the sweetest person you will ever meet. She has had so much success yet still is so humble…. If you ask me, she is an artist that we would like to model ourselves after.IM: Amy was not the only collaboration on this record you also continued your incredible work with Trevor McNevan as well as working with some other extremely talented individuals like Richard Marx and the phenomenally popular Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace. Can you share with us what that process is like and what you or they may have taken away from the experience?

DB: Working with different writers is such a blessing. In my opinion there is only good that can come from such things. Not always great songs, but I’ve realized that we can all learn something from one another. Each artist / writer brings a different ener-gy and talent to the table. The coolest thing about this record was the opportunity to work with such a broad array of writers, some overtly Christian and some not. God continually blows me away with the talent He pours into each and every person, and He can always influence your songs if you ask Him to. That was what I think the other writers could take away from us. We’re genuine guys who know where we stand with our faith in Jesus.IM: How did working with Producer David Bendeth (Paramore, Breaking Benjamin, Hawthorne Heights etc.) impact the new record?DB: David Bendeth is a strong, unique personality all of his own. A loud, opinionated man who grew up in Toronto, I actually felt like we could relate on some issues. His team of engineers are a real force behind the sonic quality that comes out in his re-cords. I think he really gets Rock as well as Pop, and I think that definitely influenced the record as a whole. He was a pleasure to work with and I kinda miss hearing his raspy deep laughter – simply ridiculous.IM: Is there anything else you would like to commu-nicate to your fans up in Canada?

DB: Canada is the greatest country. Collectively Canada produces some the finest talent in the World, and at the very least promotes the devel-opment of Music / Artistry is a huge way. It’s like the Arts is woven into the dna code of Canada. Sometimes I think it’s because of the long winters, when we huddle indoors and resort to music that we have developed this way... God keep Canada – Glorious and Free.

STARVATION FOR SALE: The 2008 Global Food Crisis

“Eating beans is like eating steak,” one desperate farmer told us, “How are we supposed to feed our children?” We were in the mountains of beautiful northern Ni-caragua, documenting the coffee indus-try. Plantation workers told us how their main staple foods, rice and beans, had doubled and tripled in price in the last year, while their already tiny wages had stayed frozen. Simple corn tortillas once accompanied their rice and beans, but even those had become a delicacy.

That was January of this year. Shortly af-terward, international media pundits and analysts began boldly proclaiming that a “global food crisis” was on its way, but the truth was the crisis had been cruel reality for many months, not only for those hard-working Nicaraguan farmers, but for more than 100 million other people around the world. Since then, things have only gotten worse. High prices are prompting food protests in many countries, from tortilla riots in Mexico, to disputes over food ra-tioning in India, to protests over grain pric-es in many parts of Africa, Asia, and even Europe. The increasing scarcity of food is “the biggest crisis looming for the world’’, according to World Food Programme of-ficials, now at extreme levels in at least 36 countries.

What’s causing these high food prices? It appears to be a perfect storm of rising fuel costs, increases in meat and biofuel consumption (which both use up vast amounts of other food sources,) bad harvests due to climate changes and other factors, and the long term effects of large-scale farming operations driving out peasant farmers, who then move to city slums and become hungry poor in-stead of self-sustaining food producers. It will take a wholesale change in the way international aid and trade is done to really solve these problems, but in the meantime, we can help:

1. Give toward humanitarian agencies that help teach people better small-scale farming methods and that buy food aid from local farmers. This helps sustain local food systems in these countries instead of undermining local farmers by flooding their markets with subsidized food from the U.S. or Canada.

2. Write the prime minister and your mem-ber of parliament, urging them to put laws in place guaranteeing that if goods are sold in Canada, the workers who pro-duced it received fair living wages, even if they are overseas. Also ask them to sup-port the “Make Poverty History” objec-tives.

3. Eat less meat. Strange, you say? It takes 145 times more fossil fuel to produce beef than potatoes. The reason for this is simple: Cattle consume at least 14 times more grain than than they produce as meat. In fact, one-third of the world’s ce-real harvest (wheat, corn, rice) is fed to farm animals. So think about it. If we all consumed even half the meat we nor-mally would, there could be as much as 20% more of the world’s grains freed up for human consumption or biofuels. It was Einstein who said, “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”

IF YOU ASK RoWER, JANE RUMBALL WHAT THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN HER LIFE ARE, SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO THINK LONG TO ANSWER.God, my husband and my family, says Jane. Rowing and school take up much of my time, but if I didn’t have those three things my life would mean little.

Perhaps those are different priori-ties than you would expect from the woman with a World Championship gold medal and medal potential for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Jane sees her family as a necessary support structure. My family knew me before I was an athlete and they just want me to live a happy and fulfilling life, says Rumball.

My husband wants to see me pursue the things that God has gifted me with. God hasn’t always been a fac-tor in Jane’s life, but in her first years of university when her parents’ divorce, a failed relationship, and shattered rowing dreams all collided she was

left with a sense of desperation and emptiness. As she struggled with her own challenges she observed the life of a fellow rower who had been cut from the team yet seemed unfazed. It bugged me that she could have that peace and hope when it seemed be-yond my grasp. While Jane puzzled over what she saw in her former team-mate, another friend helped bring it into perspective.

Someone from Athletes in Action ex-plained to me that Jesus Christ had died for my sins, and that I could have real hope. I chose to believe it and my life was dramatically altered. Later I found out that my teammate was a Christian, and it all made sense. In the years following, Jane’s life has taken on a new sense of purpose. Without that hope, without that knowledge that God loves me and has a plan for my life, she says, I would have dropped out of meaningful living a long time ago.

As she races towards the 2008 Olym-pics, Jane Rumball does so without fear, knowing that the results of her competing are only a small portion of what is really important in her life.

ble event that threatens humankind. Shyamalan comments “For me, story ideas are always cata-lysts for characters to have conversations about faith, about love, about human life, and to re-veal themselves spiritually and emotionally,”. As events play out, Elliot and Alma find themselves part of a newly formed nuclear family, “I hope the new family that they create serves as a met-aphor for humanity, for our ability to be positive and hopeful and move forward - and, at the same time, I hope the movie leaves you with the sense that we may not get that chance if we don’t start changing some things,” concludes Shyamalan.

MEET DAvE – July 11Rated PGIn MEET DAVE, Eddie Mur-phy portrays the captain of a crew of tiny, human-look-ing aliens that arrives on earth in the perfect disguise — a spaceship shaped like an ordinary man — in the spitting image of the cap-tain.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT REVIEWS

Joel Augéon The Blue

Joel Augé may not yet be a familiar name, but you may have heard his music in one of

his other incarnations Capstone, Sixdays or Hewit. With “On The Blue”, Joel Augé offers the listener an experience that not only meets but exceeds any expectation of a worship record while also deliv-ering a great album. Personal, worshipful, artistic, honest, and thoroughly enjoyable are just a few of the ways to describe “On The Blue”. “Glory Glory”, “Every Heart”, “Singing Hallelujah” and “I Know My Place” are just a few of our favorite tracks on an album full of emorable passionate songs.

Joy ElectricMy grandfather, The Cubist

A new Joy Electric record is somehow always an exciting thing, like flying a kite or playing

with helium balloons, you may know what the ex-perience will bring but it doesn’t loose its appeal. My Grandfather, The Cubist is another addition to the incredible catalogue of music Ronnie Martin is responsible for. As much as Tooth & Nail can be criticized for releasing albums that follow the latest musical trend they should also be complimented for continuing to bring the ever unique Joy Electric to salivating fans.

ManafestCitizens Activ

Bringing more of his brand of fusion, rock and hip-hop mixed with pop Manafest is sure to yet

again please his fan base. Building on his successful releases Glory and Epiphany, Citizens Activ brings more of the same sugar coated, high energy, poptastic beats n’ rhymes. Stepping Out, 4321 are just two of the tracks that will get your adrenaline going.

Article OneColors And sounds

Lead by Nathan and Matt Piché Canadian band Article One deliver their sophomore effort

Colors and Sounds. Enlisting the help of producer Tedd T, the band is much more artistically diverse and aggressive, using more layers and textures while highlighting Matt’s phenomenal work on the violin. Stand out tracks include “Without You (I’m Not Alright)”, “If The World Gives Up” and the title track. A huge leap forward for AO who’s new found creativity seems to have exploded all over Colors and Sounds.

Life SupportRoar of heaven

Life Support are cut from the same cloth as bands like Hillsong United. Clean vocals & strategi-cally layered instruments makes

“Roar of Heaven” a cut-and-dry worship album with edge. Tracks like “Made for This” and “Roar of Heaven” produce subtle hints of Paramore or Jer-emy Camp. The scaled-down version of the hymn “Nothing But the Blood” is also a highlight track.

Inhale ExhaleI swear

Inhale Exhales sophomore effort screams with raw energy, and well crafted passionate songs, like the lead single and video

“It’s Myself vs. Being A Man”. Drawing from a host of influences this Solid State band from Ohio deliv-ers as much brutal thrash metal as classic rock, sure to please fans of bands like Underoath and Kills-witch Engage. Other songs to take note of are “I Needed A Spaceship (Instead I Got Problems)”, “Is the Fact That I’m Trying To Do It, Doing It For You?”, and “Knowledge = Priceless”.

Eliashope Is Born Again

Elias Dummers debut full length album Hope Is Born Again offers a full slate of 12 tracks includ-

ing the catchy “Make It All Right”, “The Love Song” and “Raise Our Voices” as well as a few pulled from his earlier self titled ep. While we would like to hear a stripped down piano only version of “Make It All Right” the album as a whole is just what many people will be looking for and is a good first effort from Elias.

A store built on the concept of salvaging the old and creating a new; Preloved has had to do that very same thing. As its flagship store was set ablaze by a 6 alarm fire that laced one of the most fashionable streets of To-ronto in February of 2008, Preloved has had to rework the ashes and start again. It was Julia Grieve that began Preloved after making a name for herself as an inter-national model. This career allowed Grieve to gain a solid understanding of style and

fit, which are attributes that contribute to the success of the company and brand today. With a vision for an eclectic store with attitude, Grieve hired a local designer named Peter Friesen, and as a team they created what is known today as Preloved. A store that specializes in the reconstruc-tion of vintage clothing, Preloved appreci-ates all that the past has to offer and em-braces the future with style.

FEATUREAN INTERvIEW WITh MATT BRoUWER By Jamie Cambers

I’m sitting shotgun beside singer/song-writer & worship leader Matt Brouwer. He’s in his hometown of Truro, NS for a family visit. Tightly tucked into his mom’s Ford Escort, he sits com-fortably postured in the driver’s seat in layers of winter clothing. I don’t blame him, after all, it’s winter and he’s been living in Los Angeles for the past few months. Matt exudes intelli-gence and earnestness when he speaks; this is especially apparent in his song-writing and performance. As we travel, I ask him a little bit about where his musical journey began:IM: Where did the song-writing process start for you and how did worship become a part of that process?MB: Song-writing for me began in the 11th grade. The catalyst was an experience I had a youth conference. The band blew me away. But, it wasn’t just the music; there was something deeper. I walked away changed from that event and remember thinking that I wanted to be a part of whatever that was. It was God revealing Himself through the music and that started me on my musical and spiri-tual journey.

IM: Explain your song-writing process.MB: I am such a procrastinator in my writing. I tend to do well with co-writers who push to get a song completed in one sitting. I like to write until I’ve something to show for it. You always come away with new ideas from co-writing sessions like that and it’s helped me write better songs on my own as well.

IM: Your debut album, Imagerical, was a great venue to show your penchant for song-writing & your heart for worship. Where and how did that project start for you?MB: When I was in college I started a weekly gathering called Monday Night Worship (MNW) that was influenced by experiences I had in Vancouver after high school. I experi-enced the potential for an explosive collision between music, community, and the open-mindedness that happens in people’s lives during their college years. The songs on my first album were written for and inspired by that gathering.

IM: Since your debut album, how has song-writing changed for you?

MB: I began writing songs to express spiri-tual longing and life experiences. During the MNW time in my life, I wrote more corporate ‘praise’ songs simply to add to our repertoire. Now there’re so many praise songs. I’ve gone back to where I started and am writing per-sonal songs from my heart.

IM: You partner in a non-profit organization that is building a school in Guatemala. How did you get started with that?

MB: A trip to Guatemala and some other third-world countries changed my life. Surrounded by so much wealth where I was living, I felt so many conflicting emotions. I shared my experience with a friend who really encour-aged me to speak to his father-in-law about helping the amazing people I met in some of the poorest parts of the world. From there, we started New Beginning Resources. My job is to find people who have vision but need help with the resources. I’m in awe of what NBR has done and it’s the best job in the world! (check out www.nbri.net )

IM: Rumor has it you’re almost set to release your new record?

MB: Yeah. I have been writing and recording a new album in Nashville with Grammy-win-ning producer, Michael Omartian. We’re re-leasing it late-summer. It is the most ambitious project I’ve ever done but I’m excited for what it will mean for the live show because at times I have to be careful not to be too mel-low and bore an audience to sleep (laughs).

Featured New ReleaseRELIENT KThe Bird and the Bee Sides

Thirteen killer original new tunes collected under the moniker of The Nashville Tennis EP. With all five mem-bers writing and taking turns on lead vocals, it’s perhaps Relient K’s most diverse ef-fort to date, including Thiessen’s alt-country “At Least We Made It This Far,” bassist John Warne’s “The Last, The Lost, The Least,” which is explosive both soni-cally and in its social commentary, and new drummer Ethan Luck’s punk rock reggae “No Reaction,” to name but a few highlights. As for the “Bee Sides” Relient K remixed and re-mastered 13 tracks, including an acoustic version of hit single “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been”. There are also tunes from the Vinly Countdown, The Employee of the Month EP, The Creepy EP, The Apathetic EP and, as Thiessen puts it, “a ton of other stuff that you can’t even find on the internet - at least not yet.”

IoN AUDIo LP DoCk The just released Ion Audio LP Dock enables the direct conver-sion of your vinyl collection to your mp3 player. Included software cleans up the pops and scratches and will even consult Gracenote MusicID technology to auto-matically retrieve album, artist and song in-formation from the Internet, simplifying the conversion and cataloging process of your entire record collection to a few mouse clicks. With a suggested retail price of ap-prox $300 it is an extremely cost effective way of revisiting your old albums.

PRoJECT gREEN JET is a sleek looking con-cept ecological water craft. The vehicle is 57 meters tall and is the equivalent of a jet aircraft on the water. Using an automated system controlled by one man with a touch-screen, the sails prove to be faster, more ef-ficient and less labor-intensive with minimal environmental impact. The sails seem to be huge solar panels that store and chan-nel the energy towards a propeller. Soon enough the current public out cry against the auto industry will have an impact on the shipping industry and they will have to quickly adapt becoming far more respon-sible for their affect on our oceans. Project Green Jet may just be leading the way.

IPhoNE 3g Apple CEO Steve Jobs launched the second generation of the company’s incredibly successful handset at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Fran-cisco in early June. The new version is twice as fast at half the price and is expected in US, Canada and the UK on July 11th and more than 70 other countries later this year. The iPhone 3G is priced at $199 for the 8GB model, and $299 for the 16GB model.
