1 August 2014 FREE - MONTHLY Issue No. 55 Ruddington Parish Council VILLAGE NEWSLETTER 63 Bus Service Axed A recent announcement that Notts County Council is set to withdraw the 63 bus service from 4 August has been met with dismay by Ruddington residents. The 63 is currently operated by Paul S Winson and runs from Keyworth to the QMC via Ruddington and a number of other local villages. The service was introduced a few years ago to help improve rural links in the area. But despite the 63 not being included in an official list of services earmarked for withdrawal, Notts County Council quietly announced on its website last month that it was to be axed. The news of its demise is just one of a number of service changes that will take effect from 4 August – and that, according to the website, have resulted from ‘extensive consultation’ with a number of parties, including local communities and passenger surveys. Unfortunately, as residents and bus users have pointed out, this ‘extensive consultation’ didn’t include the 63. Yet this is an important route, provides the only direct link to the QMC from Ruddington (a godsend for patients and visitors who don’t drive), a key commuter service to major employment sites including Ruddington Fields Business Park and the University of Nottingham, and links to several local schools. Its planned successor, the 863, will comprise an off-peak shopping service, connecting East Leake, Wysall and Keyworth with the Morrisons supermarket at Gamston. Schools, hospitals and key employers will no longer be served and vital links between Ruddington and other local villages will be lost. Ruddington Parish Council has objected to Notts County Council about the withdrawal of the 63 service and will keep residents informed of any developments on our website and in the newsletter. How lucky are we...........On the doorstep of our village we havea multi awarding winning amenity in theshape of Rushcliffe Country Park.Numerous visitors from near and faruse the area for recreation and leisure, exercising both themselves and theircanine companions, and for enjoyingthe wildlife.Specific areas of the park aredesignated for particular use e.g. thepark, sensory area and BMX track. Italso has clearly signed defined areasfor dogs. Some allow them to run free, others require them to be kept on leads.Unfortunately, over the last few months(despite the area around the lake being

a “dogs on leads” area) some waterfowl have been mauled and killed byunrestrained dogs. The park is a large and diverse area. Itwould help the Rangers to maintain itas the fantastic facility it is if visitorswho see anything that causes themconcern would alert them on 0785 5489913.Thank youBy Barbara Breakwell

We Will Remember ThemThis month, on August 4th, is the 100thanniversary of the start of the Great War.A Roll of Honour of those men fromRuddington who served their ‘King andCountry’ is on display in our VillageMuseum. The Ancient Order ofForesters Friendly Society was

responsible for putting up the memorialand in 1918 established ‘The Foresters'War Memorial Benevolent Fund’ toprovide financial assistance tomembers and their families who wereseverely affected by the losses of theFirst World War.

Village memorials were vital focal pointsfor those grieving relatives and friendsat home when their loved ones werelying in ‘some foreign field’. The fallenare remembered by name in St Peter’sChurch; on a brass wall tablet, twoframed rolls of honour in the munimentroom above the south porch and theWar Memorial next to the churchyard.Kay Steer

Could you be a ParishCouncillor?

Following the recent and helpful piecesby Linda Cook, I want to add a coupleof things. Firstly, there is growinginterest in becoming a councillor. Wedon’t have a vacancy at the momentalthough I believe that there soon willbe one and next May all 16 places willbe up for grabs. .Secondly, in the lastnewsletter it was suggested thatelections do not happen. That is notcorrect. There was an election in May2012 when Cllr Auckland joined theCouncil and in my view it is good thatthere is sufficient interest in the role forthat to be necessary. If you want to know more aboutbecoming a councillor, we want to hearfrom you. Contact the Parish Counciloffice or any of your parish councillors.Cllr Nick Tegerdine

If you would like something includedin the Village newsletter please talkto the Clerk or Deputy Clerk. The copy deadline for the nextedition is 15th August.
