Mcel invests about $70m in network infrastructure: Mcel has announced this week an accelerated investment programme in 2008 of around $70m to be used for the expansion of its national network in Mozambique to increase the quality of service offered and expand its geographical coverage. This sum will be used to meet the strategic objectives of mcel, Mozambique's main mobile phone operator, which has a subscriber base of around three million clients, equivalent to around 70% of the mobile telephony market in Mozam-bique. The strategic objectives of mcel involve increasing the capacity of the network platforms so as to satisfy the exponential growth in its customer base. In this context, it is envisaged the activation of 200 new base stations in 2008 is envisaged, which, apart from substan-tially improving the quality of the signal and the service provided, will also allow the introduction of new technologies, making it possible to launch innovative services to the market, such as the Third Generation (3G) network and mobile broadband services. The 3G network will initially cover the cities of Maputo and Matola and, in the subsequent phases, the cities of Beira, Nampula, Tete and Nacala, thus allowing access to broadband connectivity and a myriad of new applications for compa-nies and individuals covered by its extensive network. mcel has just made the services of its network available along the Tete Corridor, becoming the first and only operator to fully cover this important development corridor, interconnecting Tete city and province to the network backbone. The interconnection will make possible, access to mobile telephony services for millions of citizens living in Manica and Tete provinces. All of the country's provinces will eventually have 100% of their districts covered by 2009.

CHISSANO HOSTS CONTINENT’S CORPORTE GOVERNORS, LEADERS & BUSINESS STRATEGIEST-INVITATION: As shares in stock markets plunge, the continent becomes integrated, the fight against HIV in-tensifies, the struggle for poverty eradication gets momentum, the quest for efficient corporate performance while cautious of sustainability in terms of both returns and development (environmentally) becomes more relevant, the Public-Private Partnership turn out to be the vehicle for governments’ endevours for efficient service delivery and the need for attracting both local and foreign direct investments becomes more pertinent to Africa, Corporate Governance seems to be taking a centre stage.

It is therefore, against the above background that the Joaquim Chissano Foundation (Fundação Joaquim Chissano) will on 10 & 11 October 2008, in Maputo-Mozambique, host the CONFERENCE ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE IN AFRICA, with the theme; PROBITY & INTEGRITY AT THE DAWN OF THE MILLENNIUM . The conference will be Patroned by the Foundation’s President, Mozambique Peace Architect and Winner of Mo Ibrahimo Award of Excellence in Good Governance, Former Head of State of the Republic of Mozambique, His Excellency Joa-quim Alberto Chissano.

Chissano after successfully leading Mozambique to peace and stability, propelling the country to economic growth and thereafter giving power at freewill, found it fit to dedicate his life to the continent’s mission for peace, sustainability and accelerated economic growth. Hence, it is expected that the conference will bring together leaders, directors and strategists at decision making level of both the Public and Private Sectors across the African continent to discuss issues of Corporate Governance and Sustainability.

The conference will count on speakers and facilitators who have shaped the Corporate Governance debate in the continent and beyond and has secured support of institutions which are in the forefront of Corporate Governance advocacy and practice in the world. Simultaneously, the Global Reporting Initiative whose Chair-man of the Board is former South African Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the King Committee on Cor-porate Governance, Dr Mervyn King, will conduct a workshop on the Triple Bottom Line Corporate Reporting, as a form of support to the conference. Please visit www.fjchissano.org.mz for conference information and registration.

I look forward to meeting you here in MAPUTO in October and please note, however that registration is NOW! ‘First come, first served’, while taking advantage of early ‘bird’ fees.
