Warren Benjamin President, Mackay West
Rotary Grace
PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE:
Jim Ford is not dislike other teachers I know, who can look
around a room, and recognize people they have taught or
come in contact within their teaching career. Sitting beside Jim
last week, it was surprising just how many of our members he
knew.
Jim gave us a rundown on how the old heritage listed Sugar
Research Building, is being transformed into the new
Catherine McAuley College. There are certainly some
challenges, working around what can and can’t go with the
heritage regulations. I was surprised just how many Catholic
private schools are in Mackay. Jim indicated there are 10
Kindies, 31 Primary Schools and 8 colleges, that is a lot of kids.
I was aware Mercy college and St Pats were to amalgamate
but was surprised the naming of that combined college was
such an arduous task.
We had Kevin Walters as a guest again last week, could be a
prospective member. Rotaractors Nick Butler, Rahval Phillip
and Josie Dahtler also were guests. It is great to see the
younger generation getting along and enjoying what they are
doing in Rotary. Nick has generously put his name down to
help with manning the show gates for us.
Next week is Table Tennis at the Table Tennis Association
shed,76 Bridge Road, South Mackay. 6:00 pm start and $25
per head, and don’t forget to bring your partners. No, it’s not
fancy dress. Don’t forget the Marina Run on Sunday June 6, if
you have not already done so, contact Todd Shannon if you
would like to help on the day. It’s usually only about an hour or
two. Todd will send out a roster soon.
The following week, 9 June, is State of Origin, and If it does
manage to be played in Townsville, there could be a mass
exodus from Mackay. For those us left (the President can’t
leave the Ship), the usual meeting will be 5:15 for 5:30 start, to
enable us to catch the game on TV.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING
College Principal, Mr Jim Ford told the story of how the iconic West Mackay Sugar Research Building was morphing into the Catherine McAuley Catholic Secondary College.
The project will be delivered in 4 stages as enroll-ment demand is realized.
Projected enrollment for 2022 will be 76 students in year 7, building up to a full cohort of 739 students in years 7 to 12 by 2017.
Effective repurposing of historically significant buildings will provide practical, functional teaching and ancillary spaces while preserving the site history. Many of the fine features will be retained.
This is great news for West Mackay and our historic Karl Langer designed Sugar Research Building which was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2008.
Guests at the meeting were Kevin Walters and Rotaract members Rahval Phillip, Josie Dahtler and Nick Butler, photo below, left, with Col Meng and John Palmer.
Below right: Jim Ford and Secretary Dale appear to be discussing something beyond President Warren’s comprehension.

Rotary International Information
OBJECT OF ROTARY In some areas of the world weekly Rotary club meetings begin with all members standing and reciting the Object of Rotary This statement, which comes from the Constitution of Rotary, is frequently seen on a wall plaque in Ro-tarians' offices or place of business. The Object of Rotary is "to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise." The state-ment then lists four areas by which this "ideal of service" is fostered: "through the development of acquaintance as the opportunity for service; the promotion of high ethical standards in business and professions; through ser-vice in one's personal, business and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, good-will and peace." The Object of Rotary has not always been expressed in this manner. The original Constitution of 1906 had three objects: promotion of business interests, promotion of good fellowship and the advancement of the best interests of the community By 1910 Rotary had five Objects as increased emphasis was given to expanding Rotary. By 1915 there were six Objects. In 1918 the Objects were rewritten again and reduced to four. Four years later they had again grown to six and were revised again in 1927. Finally, at the 1935 Mexico City Convention the six Objects were restated and reduced to four. The last major change came in 1951, when the "Objects" were streamlined and changed to a single "Object" which is manifested in four separate ways. The "ideal of service" is the key phrase in the Object of Rotary. This ideal is an attitude of being a thoughtful and helpful person in all of one's endeavours. That's what the Object truly means. ROTARY MOTTOES The first motto of Rotary International, “He Profits Most Who Serves Best," was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon, who made a speech in 1910 which included the remark, "He profits most who serves his fellows best." At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted-"Service, Not Self." These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be the official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 Con-vention in Detroit- "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" and "Service Above Self." The 1989 Council on Legislation established "Service Above Self" as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. 7 - FIRST NAMES OR NICKNAMES From the earliest days of Rotary, members have referred to each other on a first-name basis. Since personal ac-quaintanceship and friendship are cornerstones of Rotary, it was natural that many clubs adopted the practice of setting aside formal titles in conversations among members. Individuals who normally would be addressed as Doctor, Professor, Mister, the Honourable or Sir are regularly called Joe, Bill, Charley or Jerry by other Rotarians. The characteristic Rotary club name badge fosters the first-name custom. In a few areas, such as Europe, club members use a more formal style in addressing fellow members.
