One of life’s greatest affordable luxuries has always been a goodbottle of wine. If you enjoy wine, you must be aware of the manywineries and vineyards in Southern New Jersey. Years ago a fewfarmers in Southern New Jersey started planting grapes simply as analternative to the acres of corn, tomatoes, and other deliciouslysuperior South Jersey produce. It did not take very long beforesubstantial efforts were made to produce quality wines from theseSouthern New Jersey grapes.

The production of wine in Southern New Jersey has, if you willexcuse the pun, graduated to an even higher level as one of the state’sbest colleges, Stockton State College, will be opening an EducationalCenter in Hammonton and is planning a Viticulture and Enologyeducation initiative that is tentatively scheduled for launch in fall2013.

Today, much of the Southern New Jersey wine industry has maturedand evolved. There are many high quality wines produced right herein our region. In fact, a discussion I recently had with a Cape MayCounty vintner, provided me an even deeper understanding of justhow serious Southern New Jersey wineries have become aboutproducing world class wines. You see, I was inclined to believe thatwines produced in Southern New Jersey would all be similar andlargely exhibit the same characteristics.

It seems that not only are the wines produced in the many locales ofSouth Jersey different but they can vary greatly. I was lucky enoughto talk to someone so passionate about this subject that I foundmyself even more excited about Southern New Jersey wines and theirpotential to compete in a discriminating world market.

Here is a brief excerpt from the Natali Vineyards web-site explainingthe uniqueness of lower Cape May County for wine production. “TheCape May peninsula has a unique climate. For the tender Europeanwine grapes (Vitis vinifera), the Mid-Atlantic region is hostile: toocold, too humid, and too rainy. But lower Cape May’s climate ismoderated by two large bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and theDelaware Bay. The configuration and climate parallels a famousFrench wine-growing region, the Bordeaux, which lies between theAtlantic and the lower Gironde River. Like the area known as theMedoc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc do verywell in this climate.”

There is not any doubt in my mind, that with time, given the similarcircumstances, all Southern New Jersey wineries will produce winesof equal or better quality than the French.

In a recent story in “The New Yorker” magazine about comparingwines from France with wines from New Jersey, the following wassaid, “But now, in an even more surprising turn of events, anotherAmerican wine region has performed far better than expected in ablind tasting against the finest French châteaus. Ready for the punchline? The wines were from New Jersey……. So go ahead and buysome wine from New Jersey.

But if you really want to maximizethe pleasure of your guests, put afancy French label on it. Thosegrapes will taste even better.” Isay forget the “fancy Frenchlabel”. Be proud of our SouthernNew Jersey wine makers. Thisstory in The New Yorker provesthe quality of Southern NewJersey wine but shows its greatestweakness, perception. We mustmake people realize that theiroften ridiculous caricature view ofNew Jersey, is absolutely wrong. The best way to do this, is for allof us to invite friends and familyfrom other states to join us forwine tastings and vineyard tours.Pack them in the car with a picniclunch. Take them for a tour ofSouthern New Jersey’s winerieson one of the many wine trailsdesigned for this purpose.

This week’s beer is a celebratorytreat, Southern Tier’s CrèmeBrulée. Drinking this ImperialMilk Stout is the best way to enjoya liquid dessert. It pours very darkand its crème colored head settlesvery quickly. The first and mostobvious flavor is that of butter-scotch with a perfect mix of cara-mel and vanilla. However, it stillholds the overall flavor andmouthfeel of an imperial stout. Byreading the description, many beerdrinkers will shy away from thisbeer as too sweet and candy-like,but even the most hard core stoutfan will appreciate the way the ge-niuses at Southern Tier were ableto mask the 10% ABV into a deli-cious drink that can be enjoyed byall categories of beer drinkers.

Some Like It Hot…But Most Work BestWhen They’re NOT.

Thermal coatings can be used to reduce high temperatures in vehiclecomponents, like exhaust manifolds and engine compartments.Lowering the temperature in these parts helps to boost horsepower inthe vehicle overall. The horsepower boost is especially noticeable invehicles with a lot of horsepower already.Thermal coatings primarily include ceramic coating of metalcomponents. There are other types of thermal coatings, such as heatwrap, which can be used for specific purposes. However, for thisarticle, we will focus on the ceramic coatings. Most ceramics can withstand temperatures of 1,400 degreesFahrenheit. The durability in extreme temperatures makes ceramic agood choice for exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipes and headers. Theceramic coating on these parts will help prevent rust. At the sametime, the coating will not burn off because of the extremetemperatures.

Ceramic On Rotors Is a Sharp Look…Another valuable use of ceramic is on the rotors behind the wheels.Rotors tend to oxidize and rust over time taking away from theoverall appearance of a vehicle. At Checkers, we provide a service forremoving the wheels, ceramic coating the rotors and replacing thewheels. The ceramic-coated rotors provide a clean look that is a nicebackdrop for the wheels.

Insulcoat Your Components Like the Space Shuttle…Another form of ceramic coating is called insulcoating. It is used forinsulating components. Insulcoating allows hot exhaust gasses totravel out of the car and not absorb through the walls of the parts toenter the car. This insulating coating also provides minimal gains inhorsepower.

Insulcoating is applied in wet form to the inside of the pipe. Theprocess takes multiple days to fully cure. When dry, insulcoating hasa chalky white appearance. It is similar to materials used on thebottom of the space shuttle to minimize heat transfer to the cabin andcargo bay.Compared to powder coating, true thermal coatings have a morelimited selection of colors. The most popular colors are black andtungsten ceramic. Specialty shops can provide ceramic in a chrome-like bright silver, as well.

How Thermal Coatings Are Applied…The application process includes preparation, application and curing.• Each part must be sandblasted using media specific to thatpart.• Next, each piece should be cleaned with a solvent cleaner.• Third, the parts are pre-baked to remove any oils, greases, contaminants, dirt, etc.• After the part is properly prepped, the ceramic or insulcoatingis applied wet.• The part is allowed to air dry until fully cured.• Parts may be baked to expedite the curing process.

Professionals Only – Please…You should have ceramic coating applied by a professional shop. While ceramic paint can be purchased locally, it is not the industriallevel that you really need. Generally, the type of ceramic paint thatyou can purchase locally can only withstand temperatures up to 500degrees and changes color beyond that temp range. If you have any additional questions about ceramic coatings, you canreach Steve through http://www.checkerspowdercoating.com. Thephone number at Checkers is 609-965-6300.
