July was an extremely busy month in Airdrie, so I met many more people than I would have, had it been an average summer month. I’ve been seeing something in a lot of the folks that I’ve been meeting, that has caused me to re-evaluate my use of a word. A common word that is used in the context of meaning regular or average. The word is “ordinary.” Starting with the Airdrie Pro Rodeo at the end of June, I met a woman that described herself as a regular kinda gal. I asked what she did for a living. She told me she was just an ordinary house wife. She was wrong. I met a gentleman that described himself as an ordinary business owner. He was wrong. Three weeks later, at the Airdrie Air Show, I met a lady who described herself as just an ordinary cashier. She was wrong. I met two teenagers that described themselves as ordinary teens. sales clerk. She was wrong. I met a man who claimed to be an ordinary car salesman. He was wrong. I met a fella that considered himself an ordinary realtor. He was wrong. I met a brother and sister that said that they were just ordinary kids. They were wrong. Now, I suppose I could go through hundreds of people, describing their occupations, but suffice it to say, I will describe the rest generically. Some were big, some were small. Some were short and some were tall. Some were shy and some were bold. Some were young and some were old. Some were fat and some were thin. Some were women and some were men.Grandpas, grandmas, fathers and mothers. Nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers. Some were frail and some were strong. They all said they were ordinary. They were all wrong. For those that haven’t guessed yet, I’m talking about the hundreds of volunteers that made these events such a great success. The folks with selfless dedication to representing their community and helping others. It was a genuine privilege to meet and work with many of them. They don’t do it for money or fame. They ask nothing in return. And the thing that blows my mind the most, is that almost all of them actually thank organizers for allowing them to participate and be a part of these events. No sireee....these are not ordinary people. They are generous, giving and caring people. To call them ordinary would be a gross misuse of the word “ordinary.” These are extraordinary people. Perhaps that’s what makes this community....... such an extraordinary place to live and raise a family.Enjoy the rest of the summer folks. Don’t forget that we are only a month away from celebrating our Centennial. If you are one of those extraordinary people that would like to help out with Centennial Celebrations, visit www.airdrie.ca/centennial or call City Hall at 403-948-8800.

Virtue of the Week

ForgivenessBeing forgiving is giving someone another chance

after they have done something wrong. Everyone makes mistakes. Instead of revenge,

make amends. Forgive yourself too. Instead of feeling hopeless after a mistake, decide to act differently,

and have faith that you can change.

You are practicing forgiveness when you...• Rememberthateveryonemakesmistakes• Shareyourfeelingswithouttakingrevenge• Stopgivinguncaringpeopleachancetohurtyou• Acceptpeoplewithoutjudgementorcriticism• Takeresponsibilityforyourownmistakes• Makeamendsinsteadofpunishingyourselfwithguilt

Affirmation

I am forgiving of others and myself. I am willing to give and receive amends. I learn from my mistakes. Ihavethepowertokeepchangingforthebetter.
