11 –– MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM RRIICCHHAARRDD Sound Connections Family! Throughout the year’s many holidays and observances, we have both religious and secular-based celebrations. Religious holidays such as Christmas, and Ramadan revolve around that faith’s “holy days”. Holidays like Presidents day, Memorial Day and Labor Day revolve around our country’s “holy” days.

Though we have managed as a spiritual movement to create rituals around most of the secular holidays like Thanksgiving and New Years, the Fourth of July sometimes can still be a difficult challenge. After all, where is the spirituality in Nationalism and Patriotism that seems to support war and separation? Where is the spiritual aspect of the day commemorating the birth of a nation founded on the principle of separation of church and state? My radio program on Unity.FM falls on July 4 this year so I had the opportunity to seek out music that would fit the occasion and still offer some spiritual fodder. Of course when I think of America, I think of our highest ideal, our most prized belief – that of Freedom. Independence and Freedom are nearly synonymous when speaking of this great country. And Independence and Freedom are also very deep and meaningful spiritual attributes. As you know, Freedom does not just mean Freedom of Speech or Freedom of Religion as mandated by our constitution. Spiritually, we speak of the Freedom of the soul and our Independence from the chains of addiction, co-dependence or error thinking. So even though you may not be able to get into the patriotic aspect of this holiday, you can find meaning by celebrating your personal Freedom and Independence from the “chains” in your own life. Or by simply being grateful for the Freedom and Independence you already have or have had over your thoughts and habits. Yes Freedom is a beautiful word, and one of our most prized possessions whether we refer to it in the spiritual or in the patriotic sense. I’m still working on the metaphysical meaning of fireworks! This issue’s high points: Check out our newest Songbook, Shine On! in Chapter 4. In our “Mailbox” we have an invitation from Unity in Abilene, TX for traveling musicians and a request for help concerning song leaders from a church in Washington State. Sound Connections music conference registrations are brisk. We WILL be sending out confirmation letters to those of you who have registered soon and we have a list for those desiring room mates to match you up with the perfect roomie for the week. (Chapter 3) Enjoy this issue, enjoy your summer, and enjoy celebrating the birth of this great nation (Happy 232nd Birthday America!) and your own personal independence and freedom. Always remember: “You are crucial to the growth of the New Thought movement. You can and DO make a difference!” Richard Mekdeci Sacred Music Resources Coordinator Association of Unity Churches International

NEW MUSIC from your Association!

As your Music Ministry team emphasizes songwriting and offers up more and more opportunities for writing at our conferences, our yearly batch of submissions for songbooks grows and grows. The success of this strategy is evident in this year’s new offering, SHINE ON! where almost half of the 26 songs are from music directors in the field so you know they are songs that are tried and tested in churches just like yours. There is also the usual fare of great mfrom our staple NT artists, like Karen Drucker, Daniel Nahmod, Devotion, and Karl Anthony.

Bring this awesome artist to your church or center!

Scott Beck One of Sedona, Arizona’s natural wonders – singer, songwriter and recording artist Scott Beck – has been performing in concerts, for spiritual conferences and workshops, and for New Thought church services throughout the southwest for the past five years. The combination of his sweet, soothing vocals, melodic guitar, and thought-provoking lyrics resonate deeply within the heart and soul

of his listeners, sometimes caressing them gently to comfort and heal, and other times lifting their vibration to a higher level with inspiring and empowering messages. Scott learned to play by emulating the folk artists of the 60’s, then the rock guitar heroes that followed, while continuing to learn the styles of the great songwriters of that era. He began writing songs for bands he played with in the 70’s. As he worked his craft, Scott developed a talent for tapping into the “soul essence” of a song, bringing it through his heart in a way that allows so many of his fans to identify with it. Scott’s second CD release, “I’ve Seen the Light,” (reviewed May Sound Connections) is joy-filled and inspirational, filled with positive themes that help empower the listener. Eight of the songs are in the key of “F,” the tone of the heart chakra. As a former massage therapist who also worked with vibrational sound, Scott realized during production that these songs could aid in the opening of his listener’s hearts to facilitate their personal healing journeys. Scott is presently recording the final tracks for a new CD of folk songs, fairytales, and other musings, titled “Singing You Home” and scheduled for release in late July. This collection will be presented in a more “rootsy” format, with minimal production, and is more reflective of a live performance. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response of ministers, congregations and the many fans at his concerts and guest performances, Scott will embark on his first US tour, accompanied by his wife and operations manager, Sarena. Trusting in Spirit’s guidance and support (and walking the talk of the messages in his songs) the first leg of the tour will run from Aug. 1st through Sep. 7th, as they travel through northern CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY and CO. The second leg will begin Sep. 15th, running through the heartland of the US, north to the Great Lakes region, across to the east coast, then eventually back to Arizona by Nov 11th. A central and southern CA tour will follow in January ’09, followed by a trek across the southern US out to Florida and back from Feb. – Apr. ’09. Scott looks forward to sharing his inspiring songs with as many people as he can through appearances as a guest musician for Sunday services or church concerts, and house concerts (see http://www.concertsinyourhome.com/ for more info on this).

What people say: Scott Beck has performed at our spiritual community and I would highly recommend him to perform at your venue. He is a natural story teller which is expressed through the songs he writes. His music is engaging, heart-felt and deep. Scott is also very personable which comes across in his interaction with his audience. - Rev. Ron Fox, Spiritual Enrichment Center, Peoria, AZ I’ve known Scott for several years and have worked with him many times at Unity of Surprise. He has joyfully shared his gift of music at our Sunday services and at special concerts. His musical support opens hearts and enhances the worship experience for everyone. Scott lives and demonstrates the principles of Unity’s truth teachings. He is personable, loving, and dedicated to transformation. He’s easy to work with, cooperative, supportive and flexible. Scott relates well with all ages and is a gentle, inspiring presence. His music promotes healing and peace. - Rev. Billie Martini, Unity of Surprise, AZ A deep sense of spirituality has always been a key element in Scott Beck’s music. Scott has developed his own unique and rousing performance style. His music ministry is inspired by a deep sense of spiritual service, excellence, sensitivity, purity, humility and strength. Being in the moment, being in the now, being honest, and being real are qualities that define Scott’s music. Scott’s music combines lyrics based from his real life experiences with beautiful guitar work. Through Scott’s voice, his lyrics, his heart, and his spirit, he has given the members of our congregation joy and inspiration. - Rev Stanley Otterstrom, Sedona Church of Religious Science, AZ Scott has come to our church for different concerts and played during our services on numerous occasions. I would highly recommend him and his musical talents for any community gathered. The message flowing through him is the message of love, peace, oneness and connection to Spirit. Down to earth, humble and willing to step in and step up to the task, Scott will raise the vibration and bless you and your community! - Rev. Konrad Kaeserer, Unity of Flagstaff, AZ Scott is a favorite with our people here in Prescott. His music is fresh, inspiring, and uplifting, and I always feel confident when he is on the program that the music will enhance our worship experience. Scott always sings something that reinforces the message, and more than once has written a brand new song based on my sermon title. He is one of the few singers who perform for us who have been honored by a spontaneous standing ovation. Scott is very effective in concert, either for a big audience or in a small, informal setting. He has a comfortable, engaging personality and the ability to get his audience involved in the music. - Robert H. Henderson, D.D. – Minister, Church of Spiritual Living, RSI Prescott, AZ My first contact with Scott was in my capacity as producer of the Thursday Night Music at Unity program. Scott exhibited his willingness to assist others by agreeing not only to perform but to act as sound engineer and liaison to the music community. Every musician I contacted expressed their enthusiasm for Scott’s music as well as their respect for him as a person. As a concert producer I am in contact with many artists. Scott is one of the most talented, responsible and cooperative musicians it has been my pleasure to work with. - Marjorie Muro, Concert Producer – Canyon Moon Theater, Sedona, AZ If you would like to invite Scott to perform at your church service or in a concert setting (church or house), please contact him at: 928-634-3600 (home office) 928-301-2958 (cell – on the road) Email: [email protected] Visit http://www.scottbeckmusic.com/ - for more info and to hear his songs.

PPEEAACCEE EEXXPPRREESSSSIINNGG by Chris Foster

reviewed by Sue Riley

Chris Foster's newest CD, dedicated to songs of peace, will be a welcome addition to any New Thought Churches music library. Chris is a very gifted guitarist with a great voice, and these songs have really cool rhythms which make it a fun CD to just listen to. I particularly like "Love, love, love" and "Be Peace Expressing".

These are great songs to perform with your church music ministry. "Be Peace Expressing" even lends itself to a call and response. I have used both of these songs as gathering songs for my congregation. "What America Means to Me" is a powerful song with the theme of seeing America through eyes of peace. This is a great song for those hard to plan for patriotic holidays. "We Shall Overcome" is a well written waltz which lends itself to four part harmony. And, the song "Through my Eyes" is stunning. Chris even has a New Thought Christmas song on here, again with the theme of peace. All of these songs would work for a soloist, a choir, or a full band. This CD is a "must have" for all music libraries.

INVITATION TO NEW THOUGHT ARITSTS Richard, You suggested that I e-mail you so that you can put something out there for musicians who are coming our way to let them know that we could use some good new thought music at our church. We are The Unity Church of Christianity in Abilene, Texas and we would love to have some great New Thought musicians for our Sunday services. Please pass this on to whomever to get the word out. Anyone who can come and share their musical gift with us would be joyously received. Thank you so much, Rev. Karen Johnson [email protected] WINGS OF SONG OUTREACH PROGRAM Unity Church of Oviedo, Revs Coco and Alinda Ramos have 50 Wings of Song Songbooks available to donate. Suggestions for Song Leaders

Hi Richard, We are needing to instruct people as to what their duties are when they are song leading. Currently they just stand in front of the microphone and sing the tune. That is not what I want. I want the people to be invited and engaged in singing. Do you have suggestions? Or instruction sheets, guidelines for song leaders? I would appreciate your help. Thanks, Ann Thomas, minister Unity Church in Lynnwood, WA [email protected] Ann, Thanks for your note. This is a great topic for a Sound Connections workshop. In the meantime, let’s put it out to the ”experts in the field” and see if we get back any comments or suggestions. RM Victories? Concerns? Need to find a piece of music for a certain occasion or topic? Audio, video, or choral challenges? Ask your question(s). It will be put out to our “experts in the field” and answered in our next edition of SOUND CONNECTIONS.
