Starting at the Royal Observatory, they learnt how astronomers defined the Prime Meridian and helped sailors navigate the oceans. Thankfully the clouds cleared long enough for the boys to see the Observatory’s famous Dolphin Sundial in action! A short walk down the hill to the National Maritime Museum was next, where the John Franklin exhibition was taking place. John’s Franklin expedition to the Arctic with 128 other men ended in disaster, when their ships (HMS Erebus and Terror) were caught in the ice, every man died. The exhibition has an accumulation of the artefacts that were left behind, including shoes, cutlery and even some samples of the (thankfully encased) meat they took. Last but not least, was the Cutty Sark; again, a short walk from the National Maritime Museum. The boys discovered what the ship carried on its voyages across the world and discovered the routes it took. The boys showed excellent application in completing all the activities that were given to them and seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Cutty Sark from Mr Orme

Solo Performances In Music Lessons

Ukulele Crazy! Year 5 are the lucky class to start a new and exciting initiative – whole class Ukulele lessons! The boys have learnt how to hold the ukulele, how to tune, can name all of the strings, strum down and up strokes, and play a ‘C chord’ together with a more difficult ‘F Chord’. Year 5 will continue to study the ukulele throughout the year and will hopefully play in school assemblies and hold a mini concert for parents too.

In Music lessons

throughout the year boys

are encouraged to perform a

piece of music that they have been

working on in their instrumental lessons

in front of their classmates. From Year 1

up to Year 8 we have been enjoying a varied

programme of music. This week Joseph

Swan demonstrated to Year 4 what he has

been working on in his violin lessons, Arthur

Monro played the recorder in public for

the very first time and Jeevan Bhandal

performed an open strings piece

called ‘In Flight’.

That’s 4 trophies that THS have picked up now and as the football tournament season ends, it is one of the best in our history. The U10s played some fabulous football to be Plate winners in last Friday’s Mall tournament. Having missed out on the cup final on goal difference alone, the boys were determined to come away with something. An incredibly closely fought final against Falcons ebbed and flowed but that THS fighting spirt won through in the end and man of the tournament, James Tonge, notched 2 more goals to bring THS away victorious. Elsewhere in tournament action the U9s found this hard going at the Northcote tournament where they were out muscled by some bigger schools and much bigger U9s too! They will have learnt from the experience however and Mr Mullan reported he was very proud of the boys for never giving up and also giving it their all. The U13 A and B squads also had a good morning in

Saturday’s Mall tournament. Having won their group, the B squad played some great football and were desperately unlucky to go out of the cup in the quarter finals to eventual winners Rokeby on golden goal extra time. The A squad went as far as the semi-finals of the Plate competition when again they lost to eventual winners Fulham Prep. All boys that turned out last Saturday however acquitted themselves well and can be proud of their achievements. Despite all the tournaments we have had a further 9 fixtures this week (across the age ranges) and with a tally of 6 wins and 3 draws it is again shaping up to be a truly outstanding season. There are some tough games ahead with some challenging fixtures across the school in the next couple of weeks, but all THS teams can go into these with confidence after a great start to the term.

It is almost time for our annual Harvest Festival when we will once again be donating all of our food gifts to a worthy cause. This year we have made contact with the Richmond Foodbank and will welcome the Chair of trustees and one of their Directors to our Harvest Festival assembly. They will talk to the boys about some of the work they do and the destination of the food donated. Please note we do not collect Harvest Festival gift boxes due to the fact all items are put in one big container to be used when required. Simply bring a carrier bag please with some NON PERISHABLE items.

We understand from Richmond Foodbank that the following items are currently most needed but any donations are gratefully received:-Long life milk (liquid or powdered), long life fruit juice, tinned meats (Fray Bentos, hot dogs, ham etc), tinned potatoes or packet mash potatoes, coffee, sugar, rice, tinned fruit/puddings, jam/marmalade, breakfast cereals. Please ask your son to take donations straight to the hall where Mr Peyton and the prefects will be ready to receive them.

On Thursday, Year 2 ventured out and about in our local area as part of our Geography topic. The boys were on the lookout for shops, businesses and landmarks along the High Street. We walked down Sheen Gate Gardens to the High Street and, armed with official-looking clipboards, stopped periodically to write down our observations. We found all sorts of shops, restaurants and services including hairdressers, a pet shop, dry cleaners and a butcher. Can you guess what our favourite shops sold? Cakes!

As part of their recent Geography topic, ‘Investigating the Local Area’, Year 3 planned their route and set off down Sheen Lane in search of different examples of technology. Armed with clipboards, the boys recorded a vast range of examples including CCTV cameras, cash machines, keypad entry systems and automatic doors. The boys worked together to devise symbols to represent the different types of technology encountered so they could record these on a map.

Sheen Gate Choir invite THS Parents to ‘come and try them out’ Wednesday 4 November 8pm in the School Hall. Originally made up of parents from THS, Sheen Gate Choir was formed at the school back in 2010 by the then Musical Director Sam Gosden. By good fortune and under a new Director, Christopher Stokes, they will be returning to the school to rehearse and would like to encourage a new intake of parents to join them. You don’t need previous experience in a choir or be able to read music perfectly, just a good ear and a love of singing.

They have a fantastic repertoire of classical works but also perform many modern pieces. Twice a year they give a concert and are also looking at where they might like to tour next. They meet at 8.00-9.30pm on Tuesday evenings at Christ Church and at Tower House (one Wednesday a month) during term time. They are a great bunch of people who have a lifelong connection with THS. You will be given a hearty welcome and made to feel very much part of their musical community. Please just turn up or email Tricia Joshi on [email protected] For more information on the choir visit: www.sheengatechoir.co.uk
