Skoolz Magazine – March 2012

Skoolz Magazine

Skoolz Magazine catches up with Local Business and family man Richard Drinkall as he takes time out of his hectic life to take us through the tough times in farming and the economic crisis that led to the inspiration behind Backridge Farm.

Skoolz Magazine Hi Richard, great to see you. Thank you for taking some time out of your busy schedule to chat with me. Back in the day Backridge was a working farm, am I right?

Richard Yes, Backridge was a traditional dairy and cattle farm and a source of food and meat supply. Farming was highly regarded and respected and a massive part of our heritage and livelihood. In 2001 Foot and Mouth struck which lead to a crisis in British agriculture and tourism. Cattle couldn’t be moved around and many farmers lost stock and suffered massively as a result.

Skoolz Magazine It must have been a worrying period for you. Was it around this time that you came up with the idea to create Backridge Farm?

Richard The Foot and Mouth was on going and farming was suffering. I was determined to do whatever it took to keep Backridge going. I was approached by The Melt, a local candle making company who were interested in taking up some empty space as a workshop. The Melt was highly successful and people came to visit them on the yard. I think this is when I started to see an alternative use for Backridge and a way of surviving after the Foot and Mouth.

Richard The Melt were popular and needed better premises so I put planning in for two modern units and thought I would turn some of my land into a small development where local businesses could work from. I submitted plans to the Council to develop Backridge on a larger scale. I saw it as a way of boosting local trade and creating jobs for local people.

Skoolz Magazine What types of businesses showed interest in your new development?

Richard People were approaching me from all types of businesses, light industrial to art and craft workshops. Word spread and people started to visit and I realised developing Backridge further was the way forward and encouraged the space to be used as retail outlets, shops and places that families could visit and enjoy.

Skoolz Magazine Who could we find there now?

Richard Gosh, such a variety! On site you can find The Melt, Paint Pot, Mydas Touch, Pink Whiskers, The Tearoom Boutique, Woodstoc, Dance Finesse, Severns Jones Photography, The Barmy Lama Farm and new comers, Rejuve, The Box and many more.

Skoolz Magazine What are your futures plans for Backridge?

Richard I want to focus on bringing back traditional farming elements such as supplying meat to the restaurant and it would be great for the rearing and butchering to happen on site. It is important there is something for everyone at Backridge and I like the idea of a children’s play centre and a petting farm for the kiddies to get involved with. From the 1st April The Plate will be will be opening under new management and they plan to open the restaurant in the evenings, where you can have something to eat and a few drinks whilst relaxing in the heart of the countryside.

Skoolz Magazine Congratulations on all you have achieved so far and good luck with all your future plans. A visit to Backridge is an absolute must, see you there!!

Skoolz Magazine – March 2012

Education

There are an estimated 88,000 school age children with autism in the UK: a lifelong disability affecting the way a person communicates and relates to people around them.

Children with autism may have difficulty relating to others in a meaningful way and some may have accompanying learning disabilities. All children with autism have impairments in social interaction, social communication and imagination, known as the ‘triad of impairments’.

Some children may be diagnosed as having Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism. Children with Asperger syndrome have fewer problems with language than those with autism, often speaking fluently, though their words can sometimes sound formal or stilted. People with Asperger syndrome do not usually have the accompanying learning disabilities associated with autism; in fact, children with Asperger syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence.

Making Adjustments

By law, ‘reasonable adjustments’ need to be made for children with autism. There are various approaches and strategies that professionals and support staff can use to help develop the behaviour, language and communication skills of children with autism.

Use visual aids

Many children with autism find it easier

to understand the world around them

through visual aids. Professionals

may want to use a visual timetable

showing times and simple drawings of

the activities, so that the pupil knows

exactly what they will be doing and

when.

Have a buddy system

Finding a buddy can help increase

their confidence. They will have

someone to turn to if they have

difficulties understanding what is going

on around them socially, or a problem

understanding jokes, or problems with

other children.

Create a distraction-free environment

Children with autism often experience

over - (or under) sensitivity to

environments. Noise, lighting,

classroom walls covered in bright

pictures, and even school dinner

smells can all be distracting, off-

putting or even distressing. Pupils

who find things like these difficult to

cope with may benefit from working

in a low-arousal, distraction-free

environment, such as a quiet corner of

the classroom or a specially-assigned

breakout room.

Many of the approaches which help

students with autism can often be

beneficial to others too. A school wide

approach to bullying, for example,

should mean that other students

are more ready to understand and

accept people’s differences. Clear

instructions, understandable rules and

a defined routine can help the whole

school to run smoothly.

With the right help, support and

understanding, children and young

people with autism can – and do –

succeed at school. All are unique, and

many have a great deal to offer, they

just need to be given the chance to

fulfil their potential.

St Leonard’s Church and School are raising funds for a much needed car park. The congestion on the narrow road is horrendous and tractors and heavy vehicles have great difficulty getting through. Children have to walk on the road and weave in and out of parked vehicles to get into school which is extremely dangerous and putting their young lives at risk.

Here are some of the quotes that the children have made:-

”The Car Park is a good idea because it will make the road safer outside our school”

”The car park will help people coming to church and school”

”It will stop all the minor accidents and cars getting scratched”

”It is very dangerous the way we park and walk to school”

The first big money raising event is an Auction of Promises being held at the BAE Canberra Club on Friday 20th April at 7.00pm. Admission is £2.00.

Some of the promises are a Legend Replica X-lite Motorbike Helmet with the gold Carl Fogarty signature, only 200 of these were made. Signed photo’s from Blackburn Rovers football players, a round of golf, toys, kitchen goods, restaurant vouchers, days out and these are just a few of the fantastic items up for grabs. So if you want to come along and spend a little or a lot or have never been to an auction before and just fancy a great night out and a drink from the licensed bar, we guarantee that there will be something to fit everyone’s pocket.

We are well on our way to having over 100 items up for auction, so if you want to help us reach our goal and would like to donate something we could auction , please ring Debs on 01254 813789.

Education

Skoolz Magazine – March 2012

With a classroom that looks out on to the glories of Pendle Hill, I was shocked when, having asked my class, fewer than half the children had ventured up her slopes.

This inspired me to organise a residential trip for the children

to access the beauty of the environment that surrounds them.

The original focus of the expedition was of an environmental

nature but as we prepare to embark on our eighth adventure

it has evolved into so much more.

Yes, the initial remit has been met and the children have

the opportunity to learn and appreciate the beauties of the

Lake District, but I did not realise the extent of the complete

residential experience.

We take the Year 5 children away for three days, meaning

two nights away from home. Year 5 were chosen as they can

learn and use the experience in their final and important year

of primary school. We travel to the Lakes for our residential

as the distance is far enough to feel away from home, yet

without being an excessively long and some what tedious

coach journey.

The residential experience, whether activities based or

environmental like ours, provides a wealth of experiences

that aid the children’s development greatly. They have to

learn to adapt their pupil-teacher relationship to the informal

nature of the learning environment. Team work is essential

and not only in the activities, but in looking after their rooms,

sorting out the dining room and even making their beds! The

pupils develop their own support networks to help those

who are feeling homesick or anxious, and in the down time

they create their games and activities. They have to interact

with the instructors in unfamiliar surroundings and tasks. The

development of the pupil - teacher relationship can lead to a

greater understanding, on both sides, and overall progress

as they return to the classroom and the challenges of Year

6. Of course, being away from home means that the children

have to be responsible for their belongings, developing

independence. However many an hour has been lost to the

annual sock hunt on our departure!

There are definitely lessons that cannot be taken out of the

classroom environment, but, in my view, outside education

and the experiences that residential trips offer, are essential

in a child’s development and well worth the sleep deprivation

of the teachers.

Do the children enjoy it? Well I cannot answer for them, but I

can say each year we have had 100% participation and the

tales the children tell on their return certainly seem that the

experience is one that they will remember forever.

Tasting the Adventure with Scouts – Are you up to the Challenge? As winter fades do you dream of the chance of adventure? As you leave school on a Friday do you wish that your weekend was going to be filled with new challenges that are shared with good friends? Are you the one who secretly wishes they were going to be sleeping under the stars or kayaking across a lake or trekking across moorlands and mountains or climbing or learning how to cook on a fire you lit yourself or visiting new countries or zipping through the countryside at 20 miles an hour on a zip line. If you are then there are half million other young people who feel just the same and they let Scouts take them on all these adventures and many more.

Scouts are open to anyone from the age of 6 to 25 regardless of whether you are a girl or a boy. The aim for every Group is simply to have fun, make new friends and have adventures. It doesn’t matter if you are a young Bear Grylls or just someone wanting to try something new, Scouts can help you achieve your potential.

Many of you or your parents will think of Scouts as mainly about camping and knots. It is true we do spend a lot of our time out and about and do enjoy camping all over the UK. What is often not known is that at these camps Scouts are challenged to do their best and have a go at whatever is on offer whether putting up a tent or leading an expedition. As for knots it is always useful to know how to tie them especially if you are relying on them to keep your shelter up all night.

Whilst everyone enjoys getting out and having an adventure Scouts do so in a safe way making sure the right equipment is used and training is provided before any challenges begin.

Parents have an important role to play as well because only with adult volunteers can Scouts have the fun they do. Adults take on a variety of roles to support Scouts whether they can

spare an hour a month or an hour a week there are important jobs that need to be done.

The outdoors is a great place to have adventures and with Scouts you can do it in a safe way and get a chance to meet new friends and try new activities. So if you feel up to the challenge, why not come and have a go. East Lancashire Scouts are offering the chance of 250 free tickets to an activity weekend at Bowley Scout Camp on the 28 or 29 April. Just email [email protected] telling us who you are, where you live and which day (Saturday or Sunday) and whether you would like to come along in the morning or afternoon. We will post tickets out to you in time for the event. You will have to bring a parent or an adult, but don’t worry they will get to have some fun and try the activities as well. Look forward to seeing you there!

A STAR-STUDDED CAST…

A glittering musical production of Broadway is set to be staged at King

George’s Hall, Blackburn.With a multi-talented, high

calibre cast from the world of stage, film and television, Broadway features excerpts from top musicals including Phantom of the Opera, Wizard of Oz, Les Miserables, Chicago, Bombay Dreams plus many more.

Starring in the production is Ray Gabbard, who has starred in the US Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera playing the lead role.

Wayne Perrey who plays DC Parvez Lateef in TV’s Dalziel and Pascoe as well as taking on many leading stage roles, also joins the cast alongside Sarah Ryan who has performed all over the world and can be heard on various film soundtracks including Pirates of the Caribbean.

Thomas Schulze has appeared in many musicals and operettas and has played the title role in

Phantom over 1500 times. He has also taken part in many recordings for TV, radio and recorded a solo CD with songs by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Schumann. Thomas is joined on the Broadway stage in Blackburn by Anna Woodside who has performed

in Starlight Express and Fame and is currently appearing in the West End in Wizard of Oz.

Broadway’s musical director is Chris Newton who has a host of West End and European productions to his name including Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night

Fever, Cats and Starlight Express. Adding a touch of theatre to

the whole event will be former Cirque du Soleil principal artist Collette Morrow, specialising in aerial hoops and silks.

There will also be a special guest performance by Britain’s latest pop-opera girl band Access All Arias.

Broadway in Blackburn producer Paul Smith explains: “We are delighted to be able to bring a show of such calibre to this area, which often gets left behind when it comes to high quality, big-name productions.

“At the moment theatre lovers have to travel to Manchester or London to see a show like this. Amidst all the economic gloom, the star-studded musicals have been huge box office hits.

“We hope to generate a real buzz with this production.”

Broadway, which is set to be staged in Blackburn on 6 and 7 April, is then set to tour the UK.

An exciting, star-studded West End style musical is being brought to the region to the delight of theatre lovers throughout the Ribble Valley
