This was an incredible event where inspirational speakers and over 6,000 youth leaders collaborated in the launch of a year of action to effect local and global change, fight poverty and make the world a better place. Craig Kielburger, founder of Free The Children, an award -winning international charity and educational partner, initiated “We Day” in 2007 with a mandate to create a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. The movement started when 12 year- old Kielburger travelled across South-Asia to raise awareness about, and help rescue children from the chains of inhumane conditions and slavery. Kielburger and his brother Mark, have been nominated for the Nobel Prize and have attracted major sponsors in Canada such as RIM and The Royal Bank. Free The Children and We Day has special significance for MUMC because we are donating three of our used ultrasound machines to be shipped to the village of Baraka, in Kenya, where they will be deployed in primary healthcare clinics to help develop a prenatal screening program. We will also provide technical training and support. I thought it would be appropriate to bring to your attention our act of generosity at a time of the year when we reflect on our past achievements and make pledges for the coming new year. It is fitting, I think, to quote well known actor Martin Sheen, one of the guest speakers at We Day, who said: “Work is what makes me live, but activism is what keeps me alive.” On the topic of social responsibility, our department lead a second successful educational event on November 21 st at Liuna Station designed to help referring physicians and healthcare partners understand the appropriateness of imaging in common conditions such as low back pain, lung nodules, knee pain, headaches and breast disease. More than 100 of our colleagues attended Decoding Diagnostics. Presentations are available on the event web- site at www.decodingdiagnostics.ca. I invite you to visit the website and stay tuned for next year’s edition. November is RSNA month, our great radiology celebration. You will be interested to hear that we are not the only place to promote patient- centric care, as it was one of the main topics in a context of increasing awareness of cost- containment, meaningful use and need to improve communication and radiology image. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Meg Chiavaras on receiving the Magna Cum Laude award and an invitation to publish her educational exhibit in Radiographics. ISSUE 39 DECEMBER 2012

Last month I was invited to attend “We Day” in Waterloo. This was an incredible event where inspirational speakers and over 6,000 youth leaders collaborated in the launch of a year of action to effect local and global change, fight poverty and make the world a better place. Craig Kielburger, founder of Free The Children, an award-winning international charity and educational partner, initiated “We Day” in 2007 with a mandate to create a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. The movement started when 12 year-old Kielburger travelled across South-Asia to raise awareness about, and help rescue children from the chains of inhumane conditions and slavery.

It is fitting, I think, to quote well known actor Martin Sheen, one of the guest speakers at We Day, who said: “Work is what makes me live, but activism is what keeps me alive.” On the topic of social responsibility, our department lead a second successful educational event on November 21st at Liuna Station designed to help referring physicians and healthcare

partners understand the appropriateness of imaging in common conditions such as low back pain, lung nodules, knee pain, headaches and breast disease. More than 100 of our colleagues attended Decoding Diagnostics. Presentations are available on the event web-site at www.decodingdiagnostics.ca. I invite you to visit the website and stay tuned for next year’s edition. November is RSNA month, our great radiology celebration. Dr. Meg Chiavaras received the Magna Cum Laude award and invitation to publish in Radiographics for

her educational exhibit entitled Lateral Epicondylitis: Anatomy, Pathology, and Review of Ultrasound-guided Percutaneous Treatments, at the 98th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, November 25-30th, 2012, McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois. The exhibit was a collaborative effort between Dr. Chiavaras (Hamilton General Hospital), Dr. Jon Jacobson (University of Michigan) and Dr. Mark Cresswell (University of British Columbia). Each education exhibit presentation is reviewed by the Education Exhibit Awards Committee during the meeting. After reviewing 2124 education exhibits, the awards committee chose to present 30 Magna Cum Laude awards; 76 Cum Laude awards; and 339 Certificate of Merit awards. RadioGraphics RSNA Education Exhibit reviewers awarded 18 Excellence in Design awards. Dr Chiavaras was also recognized for the RSNA Seed Grant she received for the 2011-2012 academic year for her randomized controlled trial looking at various treatments for lateral epicondylitis, IMpact of Platelet Rich plasma OVer alternative therapies in patients with lateral Epicondylitis (IMPROVE). This is a multidisciplinary, multicentre, international study currently being performed at the Hamilton General Hospital, the Juravinski Hospital and the University of Michigan.

Congratulations!

Come and celebrate the “Galette des Rois”

A galette (also known as a King cake) is a type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany in the Christmas Season, in a number of countries. It is popular during this season in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Catalonia, Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria. One notable type is the Galette des Rois, eaten on the day of Epiphany. Tradition holds that the cake is “to draw the kings” to the Epiphany. A figurine, “la feve”, which can represent anything from a car to a small character, is hidden in the cake and the person who finds the trinket in their slice becomes King for the day and will have to offer the next cake.

CBO and Mi-Req Optimization Project

The CBO and MI-Req Optimization Project continues to move forward and the Working Groups outline improvement opportunities. The Central Booking Office was implemented two years ago to improve service level expectations for booking times; increase patient safety by reducing the turn around time; address duplication of work across multiple sites by standardizing processes; and improve Customer Service with a single point of contact for referring physicians. The Booking Clerks at the CBO currently have responsibility for one main modality per site, and provide coverage for the same modality across other HHS sites.

The centralization of the booking office means that Booking Clerks are no longer in the physical areas for which they book. You are encouraged to use the CBO Phone Tree at extension 41484 to get in touch with a Booking Clerk for your modality. Special effort is being made by the CBO working group to review the methods of communication currently in place to identify opportunities for improvement, despite the physical separation. There is variation between sites in terms of the exams offered, equipment used, staff scheduled, and protocols. While respecting the unique specialty of the HHS sites, we are testing the possibility of booking the first available appointment across sites for some routine exams. Senior technologists are currently exploring what would be required to go to site-wide booking for Adult CT Heads and Adult Ultrasound Full Abdomens. Work will continue to see what is possible. The MI-Req Working Group, specifically members of PACS and ICT, has confirmed that there are speed issues caused by operation of MI-Req in the Citrix environment. ICT has ordered additional Citrix Servers which should resolve this and they are expected to be in place within the next month. Speed expectations are being set by members of the Working Group.
