There was very little plastic strapping, a good indication of the commercial fishermen’s efforts to reduce litter in the marine environment. Well done to all who participated and thanks to Cath Bell and the Coast Care Team for their organisation and also to the Robe Lions Club for their contribution with cooking and providing the lunch. Robe Township Structure Plan Community Consultation In last month’s newsletter it was announced that Planning Chambers have been appointed to undertake this important role. It will include compre- hensive consultation. Our challenge as a community is to engage with family, friends, colleagues and club associates to encourage and inspire a broad and inclusive contribution to the process. Robe is growing at a significant and steady pace and with that growth comes change. How that change is implemented and managed will have profound implications for us all. This plan will have impacts on traffic flow, parking, future retail expansion, future industrial zone, retirement living, health services and heritage to name a few. It is possible that Robe could be dealing with holiday crowds of 20,000 to 30,000 in the near future. What appears a short time and manageable at present would be logistically very different and require planning well in advance. Now is not the time to sit back and let others have the input, I urge everyone to think and talk to each other and most of all make a contribution, it could help to make a difference. Norfolk Island Hibiscus (Itchy Pod Trees) (Pyramid Trees) There are many of the above trees planted throughout the Robe district as they prosper in coastal locations. The trees have seed pods which contain very fine hairs that irritate the skin and can also cause respira- tory irritation. These trees are considered a pest plant in the coastal dunes and are removed along with other pest plant species during coast care works programs. Many councils have recognised that these trees cause public nuisance and have established programs to remove these from public places. Robe Council has not yet embarked upon a program to remove these trees, but will be doing so in the future and would en- courage property owners to consider removing these trees and planting other suitable varieties. Structures and planting along road verges It has come to Councils notice that property owners are erecting struc- tures (walls/fences etc) and undertaking tree planting on the road verges adjacent their properties. People need to be aware that such action is illegal unless the person has approval from Council to do so. By placing objects or planting trees on the road reserve the property owner’s risk Having the structure or the plantings removed The possibility of an insurance claim as a result of injury. Council staff will be undertaking works in the coming months to remove obstructions from the road reserve where the obstructions are consid- ered a risk to the public or in the case of plantings will cause problems for Council into the future. Emergency Vehicle Access Track Beacon Hill Road Council has recently opened up an Emergency Vehicles Access track between Beacon Hill Road and Nora Creina Road. This track will allow a second access into Robe Township by Emergency Services vehicles ( Police, CFS, Ambulance etc) should the situation arise when access into the town via the Main Road is not available. Gates and signs will be erected, advising that the track is for emergency services vehicle access only, as the track has not been opened up for use by the general public. In response to this Council will, in the next few months, be reviewing its Walking Track/Bicycle Tracks Master Plan and will be seeking the community’s opinions as to the location of future trails, tracks and footpaths and how these will be constructed. Undergrounding Power in Hagen Street SA Power Networks will be commencing the work associated with under- grounding the power lines along Hagen Street as part of Councils PLEC (Power Line Environment Committee) project. This project when completed will improve the streetscape adjacent Lipson Park and allow the Sturt Street / Hagen Street intersection to be altered to improve vehicle movements. PLEC projects are a joint funded project between the State and Local Government that assist with the enhancement of visual aspects of a location by placing the power lines underground thus allowing trees to be planted and streetscaping projects to be implemented. Councils contribution for the Hagen Street project is $85,000. Pedestrian Crossing Victoria street In response to members of the communities concerns regarding safety, Coun- cil has approached the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) asking that it investigate whether the crossing on Victoria Street can be changed to a pedestrian activated crossing. A pedestrian activated crossing would better serve to protect the children from the school and childcare and in addition all pedestrians who wish to cross Victoria Street. The activated crossing would provide drivers with clear direction as to whether they stop or proceed and would help remove the confusion and uncertainty that currently exists. Cardboard and Paper Recycling As from April a cardboard and paper recycling bin will be located at the Coun- cil Refuse Depot. People will be able to deposit cardboard and paper in the bin during those hours that the refuse depot is open to the public. There is no fee for dumping cardboard and paper, however fees are still applicable for dump- ing rubbish at the depot. Please ensure that no contamination (plastic house- hold waste etc) is placed in the cardboard recycling bin because if the bin contains contamination Council will have to pay a premium at the recycling centre at Naracoorte. Clean Up Australia Day Twenty eight participants of various ages contributed to this year’s clean up. COMMUNITY NEWS RECIPE

Hot Cross Buns Ingredients 4 cups plain flour

2 x 7g sachets dried yeast

1/4 cup caster sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons mixed spice

pinch of salt

1 1/2 cups currants

40g butter

300ml milk

2 eggs, lightly beaten

Flour paste 1/2 cup plain flour

4 to 5 tablespoons water Glaze 1/3 cup water

2 tablespoons castersugar

Step 1 Combine flour, yeast, sugar, mixed spice, salt and currants in a large bowl. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add milk. Heat for 1 minute, or until lukewarm. Add warm milk mixture and eggs to currant mixture. Use a flat-bladed knife to mix until dough almost comes together. Use clean hands to finish mixing to form a soft dough.

Step 2 Turn dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes, or until dough is smooth. Place into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm, draught-free place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until dough doubles in size.

Step 3 Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Punch dough down to its original size. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Divide into 12 even portions. Shape each portion into a ball. Place balls onto lined tray, about 1cm apart. Cover with plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm, draught-free place for 30 minutes, or until buns double in size. Preheat oven to 190°C.

Step 4 Make flour paste: Mix flour and water together in a small bowl until smooth, adding a little more water if paste is too thick. Spoon into a small snap-lock bag. Snip off 1 corner of bag. Pipe flour paste over tops of buns to form crosses. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until buns are cooked through.

Step 5 Make glaze: Place water and sugar into a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Brush warm glaze over warm hot cross buns. Serve warm or at room temperature.
