The Grand Balloon Race 2015

To the excitement of everyone gathered in the cloister, over 1600 balloons were released on the last day of the Spring Term.A student committee of over 30 students spanning each year group organised this spectacular event, not only to celebrate Maundy Thursday but to raise money for their house charities. Students, with the support of staff, obtained aviation authorisation as well as designing and distributing thousands of race tickets. An explosion of creativity, colour and imagination transformed the exhibition space at The Nottingham Contemporary Gallery last month. This fantastic space was used to exhibit the impressive work created by some of our current Year 9 students. The diverse

selection of artwork developed by a number of schools throughout Nottingham stole the limelight with an incredible turn out of 900 visitors over 4 days. Themes such as Rights and Nature and protecting your environment provided stimulus for our artistically talented and enthusiastic students to cultivate both exciting and individual works of Art. Excellent sculptures, paintings and photography pieces all featured as part of The Nottingham Emmanuel’s collection of work within the exhibition. The Art department is incredibly proud of the successes and achievements of all Emmanuel students involved within the project. We anticipate further exciting opportunities to share our amazing students’ artistic talents within our community. Congratulations to the following students: Heather Schild , Natasha Hudson, Georgia Blyth, Jessica Blyth, Balraj Singh, Tegan Thornhill, Charley-Mae Middleton, Kyra Waldram, Victoria Chodan, Ashleigh Morris, Itasha Tezoo, Megan Cambell, Estelle South-Wilson, Bradley Jepson and Estelle Demafeliz.Ms James-Davis, Teacher of Art and Photography

On 15 May a group of university students studying Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University delivered a workshop to Year 10 Art students called ‘Outside the Box’. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to engage with a range of disciplines which inspired. them. Bryony Cousins, second year Fine Art student, said: “It’s important to have these workshops in school to open students’ eyes to new and different techniques. The students were enthusiastic and willing to complete all the tasks given to them.” Year 10 student Bethany Lowe added: “I’ll be able to use what I’ve learnt today to make my sketchbook more creative.”

As part of the school’s continuing commitment to this, a weekly staff prayer meeting now takes place every Thursday, and updates for prayer are published on the School App each week. At various points in the year, special opportunities are provided for students to reflect and pray and on 9 May, we gathered together for our Voluntary Communion for students taking exams in Years 11, 12 and 13. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to come together and pray for each other at this crucial time of year.

Together to learn, to grow, to serve 3

This half term we pray for...Students taking examinations at GCSE and A level – pray that God would grant them peace and wisdom as they approach these crucial moments in their learningPartner Sri Lanka – our new international partnership sees its first trip in early July – pray for an amazing experience for all staff and students going, and also for the ongoing establishment of the partnership in the medium term.New Year 6 students arriving and moving into Year 7 – pray that at this really important time for families that students would be full of excitement and confidence about the transition to secondary school and that they would quickly make strong relationships and feel at home at Emmanuel.

PARENTS PRAYERThere is a growing number of parents who have expressed their desire to come together and pray for the school, and following an initial team meeting in April, we would like to invite all parents to a further developmental workshop which is taking place in the Chapel on Monday 15 June from 8.00-9.00pm. This event will be an opportunity to shape the prayer and worship life of the school for parents in the coming terms, and we would really encourage all parents with an interest in this aspect of the school to come along and add to the core team who are already working with staff on this project. Mr Wolfe, Vice Principal

As part of the spiritual life of the school, students and staff are engaged in prayer in a wide variety of ways, on a daily basis through the Acts of Worship that happen in Year Groups, Houses and Tutor Groups. In addition to this, a wide variety of enrichment opportunities provide space and encouragement for students to grow in their faith.

Students from Year 8 were captivated by their recent visit to the Green Mosque in Basford. The visit represented an introduction to some of the work which is covered under Religious Expression in the Religious Studies GCSE course. Students listened attentively to the information provided by the Imam; and the excellent display of posters on show gave the students a brilliant insight into the history and culture of Islam.Students asked impressive questions about the purpose of the mosque and were intrigued with the function of various artefacts which were on display. Ahmed, the Imam, commented on the use of technology which supports everyday belief and practice such as an app to locate the direction of Mecca at prayer times and an app which contains the whole of the Holy Qur’an. Ahmed had memorised the Holy Qur’an word for word! He emphasised

the spiritual focus of the mosque and was delighted with how members of the mosque has engaged in a supportive and helpful manner with members of the local community. Students engaged energetically in a quiz with several groups getting very high marks! It was excellent being with a group of students who displayed such sensitivity and respect to the beliefs of others. We were made very welcome at the mosque and it made us consider whether Christians are as hospitable and welcoming to our places of worship. Certainly we should be!Overall, this was a fantastically successful trip and thanks go to Mr Skinner and Mrs Wilkins for accompanying the students with me on this fascinating and enlightening visit. We look forward to similar worthwhile trips to places of worship in the future.Mr Doorbar, Director of Learning for Religious Studies, PSHE, Citizenship and Spiritual Growth.

At the recent Nottingham Young Creative Awards ceremony, Sixth Former Rebecca Dixon, and Calista Corbin and Brittany Ward, both in Year 10, were highly commended for their fashion garments

within their age range, whilst Calista won first prize in her age range for her corset. Ms Jones and Ms Weston

who supported the students at the ceremony were delighted. Ms Jones said: “This year, the competition was stronger than ever with more than 300 entries so I am sure you will agree that the girls did amazingly. This is now four years in a row that we have won 1st prize in the 13-15 fashion category which clearly shows that we are the best in Nottingham for our age range. Rebecca had tough competition with work being submitted from Central College and NCN college. Next year I am hoping to win this one too!”

Why Voting is Important

Left: Rebecca at the Awards Ceremony; Right: Calista’s winning garment.

More than 100 sixth formers and community leaders gathered at The Nottingham Emmanuel School on 28 April for a first time voters’ lunch – asking Rushcliffe candidates why they should choose to vote and then presenting key issues for young people to hear their responses. The first time voters’ lunch with a difference turned the traditional hustings on its head – instead of the normal crowd hearing set speeches from local candidates the room was full of teenagers, vicars and students’ union leaders who all care deeply

about the community in which they live and who want to bring about effective change. They presented local MP Ken Clarke and Labour candidate David Mellen, Richard Mallender (Green) with the challenge of convincing them why voting matters before the room decided if the argument was convincing. Students in Year 10 and 12 then worked in groups with

local community leaders before agreeing together the key issues they wanted to ask candidates about. The event was organised and chaired by Niamh Shewell-Cooper (Year 12) who recently co-chaired the Nottingham Citizens General Election Assembly in March, which brought together 2,300 people from across the city at the Royal Concert Hall. Year 8/9 Girls Rounders League The Year 8/9 Girls Rounders League was played over two evenings of fixtures. The first round was played at Trinity and after a morning of rain along with howling winds, conditions were tough. Our first opponents, NGHS proved to be the strongest, going on to win the league. We then beat NUSA but narrowly lost to a very good Fernwood team. A dry, sunny evening for the second round, played at home, was more like rounders should be! Following some intense practice, team confidence prevailed and saw us beat both Trinity and Bluecoat Beechdale. Outstanding fielding and confident batting performances from Rosie and Natasha gave us comfortable wins. We finished third in the league, narrowly missing out on a place in the finals.
