AUDIENTIA TAKES BADENIA GLORY

The Marion Rotering-trained AUDIENTIA has won arguably the biggest steeplechase in Germany, the Listed Grosses Heinrich Vetter Badenia Jagdrennen steeplechase at Mannheim on Sunday afternoon. Ridden to victory by English based Irish born jockey Mark Quinlan, Audientia came home ahead of two previous winners of the Badenia, Supervisor and Sekundant. Despite fading to finish only seventh in the same race last year, Audientia was always prominent under jockey Quinlan, and once the pair had wrestled the lead from Sekundant and Irish jockey Chris Timmons, the result never looked in doubt. Although Audientia, a seven year old Samum mare, was unproven at the 4200 metre distance, she came home unchallenged to win the Listed contest by ten lengths, with Supervisor, winner of the race way back in 2010, second this time around at the age of twelve under Bulgarian jockey Julian Marinov, and Sekundant and Chris Timmons back in third. Although as yet not officially verified, it is believed that winning rider Mark Quinlan has become the first ever non-German jockey to complete the Mannheim Spring double of winning both the Badenia and Richard Grimminger Preis steeplechase in the same year, having partnered Audientia to a convincing nine length victory in the Grimminger last month. You can see a video of Sunday’s Badenia steeplechase here: https://www.racebets.com/…/race/de…/id/1884953/external/8026

MANNHEIM: BUSY DAY FOR TEAM ANGLO GERMAN RACING!

As well as taking photos and writing reports at Mannheim, it was a busy day for Anglo German Racing’s team of Stefanie Ihlenburg and Darren Thrussell. Here’s an insight into what other duties the two undertook on Sunday. As a jockey’s agent, Stefanie was responsible for getting visiting riders Mark Quinlan and Chris Timmons to the course for their rides in the Badenia Steeplechase, the richest steeplechase in Germany. This included arranging flights and accommodation for the jockeys, as well as ensuring that they got to the course safely. With Mark finishing first in the race on Audientia and Chris third on Sekundant, it was a pretty good day all round for Stefanie!

Not only that, but Darren was also interviewed by local newspaper Mannheimer Morgenpost about his work and general love affair with Mannheim racecourse, which he proudly announces as ‘the best racecourse in the world!’. The article appeared in the newspaper a couple of days later (see above). The article is also available online (in German) at http://www.morgenweb.de/mannheim/lokalsport/verliebt-in-die-waldrennbahn-1.2767950

JOCKEYS WANTED!

Are you a jockey with experience of jumps racing in the UK, Ireland or France? Are you looking for a new challenge? If so, why not contact us? Jumps racing in Germany is now much more resurgent than it was in recent years, and many trainers are now looking for jockeys for their horses. We cannot promise any rides, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

If this sounds like your kind of thing, please contact Anglo German Racing’s

jockeys agent Stefanie Ihlenburg at [email protected]

Meanwhile, Darren was more involved with the course itself, walking any new jockeys round the potentially tricky steeplechase course, and also filling his usual role as steeplechase expert live in the parade ring alongside regular course presenter Sascha Martin Hertel. However, for the first time, Darren was on the microphone presenting a unique insight into the Badenia steeplechase and giving the huge crowd some useful information regarding the race.

EASY FOR ITO IN GROUP 2 CONTEST

The 18:10 favourite ITO landed the Group 2 Gerling Preis at Cologne last Sunday, the first race in the prestigious German Racing Champions League series, which consists of the top middle distance races in Germany. Nine horses lined up for the 70,000 Euros contest after Lovato was declared a non-runner, however the result of this race never seemed in doubt once jockey Filip Minarik asked Ito, who had led from the start, to quicken in the home straight. Despite a late challenge from the Andreas Loewe-trained Sirius, Ito, having his first run since finishing last in November’s Japan Cup, held on comfortably by ¾ length from Sirius with Fair Mountain a further four lengths back in third. BERLIN: BRITISH RAIDER TAKES ON FRENCH GROUP WINNERS

The Hoppegarten course near Berlin plays host to an eight race card on Sunday which is being themed as an Irish Raceday. Although no runners from Ireland appear on the race card, there is international interest in the main race of the day, the Group 3 Comer Group International Oleander-Rennen, which features a challenger from England trained by an Australian, and ridden by an Austrian! The horse in question is THE TWISLER, trained by Australian-born but Newmarket-based Jane Chapple-Hyam. Winner of a Listed race at Goodwood in August last year, The Twisler, who will be ridden by Andreas Suborics on Sunday, was fifth in two decent staying contests in France later in the year, and filled the same position at Wolverhampton last time out. However, the four year old Motivator gelding is unlikely to have things his own way here as he meets two French Group winners in the shape of WALZERTAKT, also third in this race last year, and the ex-English-trained ALEX MY BOY, both of whom won Group 2 and Group 3 contests in France last year, and on form, there is very little to split the two, with slight preference for Walzertakt with good ground expected. Alex My Boy is one of three runners in the race for trainer Andreas Wöhler, who also saddles ROCK OF ROMANCE, winner of the Italian and Swiss versions of the St. Leger in the past, and WASIR, fourth in the German St. Leger last year. Markus Klug is a trainer in form, but on form, neither SPACE COWBOY nor BEBE CHERIE look set to give the champion trainer another Group success here, whilst the Christian Sprengel-trained IRAKLION looks to be the best of the outsiders.

PREDICTION: WALZERTAKT - ALEX MY

BOY - THE TWISLER - IRAKLION

TOP JOCKEY MOORE IN GERMAN GUINEAS CHALLENGE

The first classic of the German season takes place on Monday with the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen, the German 2000 Guineas. Ten runners go to post for the Group 2 contest worth 155,000 Euros with top English jockey Ryan Moore taking the rider on the Marco Botti-trained KNIFE EDGE, second in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Chelmsford last time out. The Zoffany colt, who is owned by the Coolmore organisation, is one of two overseas raiders in the race, the other being OMAR BRADLEY, placed in a Group 3 contest at Longchamp in September for Jean-Claude Rouget, but now trained in Denmark by first season handler Flemming Velin, for whom he won last month at the Klampenborg track near Copenhagen last month. However, the foreign raiders face a tough home defence led by MILLOWITSCH, winner of the Group 3 Dr. Busch Memorial at Krefeld last month, regarded as one of the top Classic trials in Germany. Winner of four of his five races, Millowitsch is unbeaten in both races at Cologne, and having beaten NOOR AL HAWA (third) and MOLLY KING (sixth) in the Dr. Busch Memorial, Millowitsch looks the one to beat here. Apart from Millowitsch, trainer Markus Klug also runs DEGAS, who was only ¾ length behind Millowitsch at Cologne last year, and won nicely on his seasonal debut last month. The Irish-bred filly PARVANEH takes on the colts here having won a Group 3 fillies race over Sunday’s course and distance last month, whilst the Andreas Loewe-trained pair BARONCELLO and VENUTO both won last time out but need to improve on what they have shown so far.

PREDICTION: MILLOWITSCH - KNIFE EDGE - DEGAS - PARVANEH

QUINLAN AIMS FOR CHASE DOUBLE

Just nine days after claiming the Listed Badenia Steeplechase at Mannheim on Audientia, jockey Mark Quinlan returns to Germany on Tuesday to ride the Elfi Schnakenberg-trained NUEVO LEON in the IDEE Kaffee Trophy steeplechase at Bremen. Whereas Audientia may well be approaching her prime at the age of seven, the thirteen year old Nuevo Leon is at the veteran stage of his career. However, this Protektor gelding was in fine form last year, winning a chase at Honzrath in October before failing to cope with the heavy ground at Bremen a month later. As well as Nuevo Leon, trainer Elfi Schnakenberg also saddles likely favourite GOOD PRINCE, winner of the Listed Grosser Preis von Karlshorst over Tuesday’s course and distance back in December, with another Schnakenberg runner, LABON, back in fifth that day. Second in the Karlshorst was SIX STONE NED, who seemed to find 3200 metres too sharp at Mannheim last month. SUPERVISOR and INDIAN SUN were second and fifth in last weekend’s Listed Badenia Steeplechase at Mannheim, however neither has good course form at Bremen, whilst BARENGER missed the Badenia to go for this, but appears to be outclassed here. Several novices also line up here, the best of which may be WUTZELMANN from the stables of trainer Anna Schleusner-Fruhriep. Despite never having raced over obstacles, Wutzelmann comes from a yard who won the Swedish Grand National last year, and this six year old Desert Prince gelding was a fine second on his season debut at Hoppegarten last month. KOFFI LADY won both her starts on the flat last year, but disappointed when only ninth on her jumps debut in a hurdle race at Wissembourg in France two weeks ago.

PREDICTION: GOOD PRINCE - NUEVO LEON - SIX STONE NED - WUTZELMANN

ITALY: BRUV BEST IN GROUP 1 CHASE

LITTLE BRUV, formerly trained in England by Yorkshire-based Tim Easterby, won one of the biggest races of the Italian jumps racing season when taking the Group 1 Gran Steeplechase di Milano at Milan on Sunday. Sent off the 3.29-1 second favourite on the Italian tote, Little Bruv, a five year old Observatory gelding now trained in Italy by Paolo Favero and winner of three of his previous starts over fences, repelled the challenge of the odds on German raider Kazzio by half a length under Czech jockey Josef Bartos with Czech challenger Billy Silver back in third.

Despite the shock defeat for Kazzio, his trainer Pavel Vovcenko didn’t leave Milan empty handed as his four year old It’s Gino gelding STAFETTINO came out best in the Group 2 Corsa Siepi dei 4 Anni hurdle race on the same card. Second in a Milan hurdle race on his jumps debut earlier this month, Stafettino was held up at the back of the six strong field by jockey Cevin Chan, who was also aboard Kazzio. However, whereas Kazzio was unable to peg back Little Bruv in the Gran Steeplechase di Milano an hour earlier, Stafettino displayed an excellent burst of speed to come home ¾ length ahead of the locally trained Noisemaker, with fellow Italian runner Keen Move back in third.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW SEASON UP AND RUNNING

Despite uncertainly over recent weeks, the racing season at Moscow finally commenced with a six race card, this highlight of which was the Group 2 Struna Stakes, a race for 3 year old fillies over 1400 meters. A field of twelve went to post for the race, which was won by the American-bred JESS KID, one of two winners on the card for jockey Rezvan Hatkov. It was also announced that, as well as a meeting this Sunday 15th May, the Monte Carlo Grand Prix meeting, featuring the Radio Monte Carlo Hurdle race, will take place on Saturday 21st May. With plans for steeplechases at Rostov and Krasnodar still to be confirmed, the Radio Monte Carlo Hurdle may well once again be Russia’s only jumps race this year, and a preview of the race will feature in next week’s newsletter.

POLAND: BRILLIANT BANK SET FOR SEASONAL DEBUT

VA BANK, winner of the Polish Triple crown and Poland’s Horse of the Year in 2015, is set to make his seasonal debut in the Nagroda Golejewka at Warsaw on Sunday. The Irish-bred Archipenko colt, unbeaten in all eight of his races so far, faces seven rivals in the 2000 metre contest, where he will be ridden by Marek Brezina.

News Round-Up – Europe

FEGENTRI SERIES CONTINUES

The next rounds of the Longines Fegentri World Amateur Jockeys Championships take place over the next couple of days, with the Gentlemen riders in Madrid on Sunday, and the ladies in the spotlight at the aptly named Frauenfeld (Ladies Field) course in Switzerland a day later. A field of just five runners go to post for the Gentlemen riders race in Madrid. Despite the small field, the 2200 metres event looks open and competitive, with TURTLE GREEN making his Spanish debut, having only ever raced in France, where he was last seen winning a claimer at Saint Cloud last month. KURDO also won last time, taking an amateurs riders race at Madrid, but that was over 1800 metres, and the extra trip on Sunday may not suit. GRIEVOUS ANGEL, who has been racing mainly at Seville recently, has no stamina doubts, but has been disappointing on his last two starts, whilst the locally-bred HISPANICO also needs to bounce back from a poor run last time out. The field is completed by TEQUILA, third behind Kurdo last time out, but who should be more suited to Sunday’s distance. Six runners line up for the Ladies Fegentri race in Frauenfeld on Monday, with top weight being carried by THE ACT, who was ridden by Frankie Dettori in the 2012 Swiss Derby, where he finished eighth. His stablemate TERRA HONEY was a decent fourth on her seasonal debut in Avenches last month, whilst MUHTAGEL merits respect on his fine second place in an Avenches handicap last month. SONG OF SNOWDON and DALIDA were both unplaced in a handicap at Dielsdorf two weeks ago, however, NIGHTDANCE MUSIC, who was running in classic races last year, drops down in class and could be the one to follow here with defending Fegentri champion Josephine Chini in the saddle.

CZECH REPUBLIC: TRAINER TIPPED FOR GUINEAS 1-2

Ten colts line up for the Velka Jarni Cena Prazske Plynarenske, the Czech 2000 Guineas at the Velka Chuchle course at Prague on Sunday. In what looks to be an open looking contest, the possible favourite looks to be the Allan Petrlik-trained LAGARO, unbeaten in three races as a two year old. However, Lagaro could only finish second on his seasonal debut last month to MONTJEU THIRD in the Vaclav Michal Memorial, seen as the major trial for Sunday’s race. It should be noted though that that race is over 1400 metres, and the extra 200 metres, as well as a 1.5 kilo pull in the weights is set to favour Lagaro. Four horses that ran in the Vaclav Michal Memorial, JOHNNY WHISTLE (third), LUCK AHEAD (fourth), AKBULAT (fifth), MAGIC TIROL (sixth) and DUDLIK (seventh) oppose again on Sunday, with Luck Ahead possibly the most intriguing. Stablemate of Lagaro, Luck Ahead, bred in Ireland by champion trainer Jim Bolger, was trained in France last year and won two claiming races in October at Compiegne and Lyon for trainer Henri Devin, both victories coming over 1600 metres. French jockey Clement L’Heureux travels over specially for the ride ERUPTION has also been running in France, however the form of his two unplaced efforts doesn’t look good enough here. The German-bred FANTASTIC ADVENTURE is still a maiden after six starts, whilst ALEXANDR needs to improve on his only run to date when fifth at Prague last month. However, LAGARO is tipped to reverse the trial form with Montjeu Third, with Luck Ahead splitting the pair to provide trainer Allan Petrlik with a 1-2 here.

PREDICTION: LAGARO -

LUCK AHEAD - MONTJEU THIRD
