Traditionally potatoes were baked in thebonfire, coming out black and hard. Theyare much nicer cooked in the oven (not themicrowave!). Don't wrap in foil; just scrubthe skins, prick 3 or 4 times and put into apreheated oven (200C, Mark 6) for aboutone hour. School NewsAMAZING PEOPLE - AMAZING CHILDREN

The Autumn term is now well under way atStilton Primary School. At the end ofSeptember, we had our annual MacmillanCoffee Morning. This gave children theopportunity to invite their families intoschool for drinks and cakes. It was a fantasticmorning, with over £200 being raised.

The topic in Owl class this term is AmazingPeople, and the children were treated to avisit from some local police officers. Thechildren looked inside the police car, examined all the equipment and learnt aboutthe important role of police officers.

Our Year 6 children have recently enjoyedspending a day at Ely Cathedral, as part oftheir RE curriculum. The children learntabout different monastic roles, as well as thefeatures of the Cathedral.

We have also recently celebrated HarvestFestival, with a special service in the church.Children from each class contributed to theservice, including saying prayers they hadwritten themselves and displaying harvestthemed art work. The children collected alarge quantity of food, which the school thendonated to the Peterborough Foodbank.

AppointmentsSystem Update

DR FIRST AFTER 6 MONTHSWe made a radical change to our traditionalappointments system at the end of Marchand it is time to review what impact this hashad. We changed because of our sharedfrustrations with the 'old' way of doing things- remember how things were?

Never enough appointmentsDifficult to see the doctor of yourchoiceNo appointments left after 5 or on aSaturday morning for those whoworkTerrible problems getting through onthe telephone only to be told to callback the next day when there may besome appointments releasedHaving to justify whether a problemwas urgent or not in order to be seenthat day

We have now received the results of ourpatient satisfaction survey and are delightedwith the results. It was carried out by anindependent company and the full results areon display in the surgery. It was good to hearthat overall the changes have largelyachieved our aim to improve our service topatients. It has been a steep learning curvefor everyone - staff, doctors and patients -as we were all so familiar with the old system. It is clear there are still further improvementsto be made so our task is not finished yetand rest assured that we are committed tocontinuously looking for ways to makethings better for our patients. The best qualityof care is our aim but it cannot happenovernight.

Our surgery had the best response rate ofany surgery previously surveyed. The resultsfrom a sample of 213 patients can besummarised below:

Page 15: Issue 330 Nov 2012 Fireworks Time€¦ · SCAN 330 Nov 2012 6 Tell advertisers you found them in SCAN! Firework Safety Enjoy a magnificent display of fireworks on the village field

Most respondents (79%) like the ideaof being able to speak to a Doctorwithout needing to attend thesurgery61% found it easy to get through onthe phone82% can take calls when the surgeryis open64% thought the telephoneconsultation was useful before beingseen67% were seen quicker than theyexpected

We also had some extremely positivecomments:

▪ I think the plan you have now is a greatimprovement

▪ The service at Yaxley doctors is secondto none. First class treatment.

And of course some critical ones which canbe grouped into three types:

1. Issues that require better staff training -this is ongoing

2. Issues that no system will ever address, such as being open very late at night forshift workers

3. Issues that show that some patientswould benefit from a detailed discussionwith their doctor about their real orperceived difficulties with Dr First asall their problems had an easy solution.I find that once I can explain how wecan overcome the obstacles that somepatients assume are there, then theyrealise that this system is much betterthan they thought. If this is you thenplease get in touch.

Q: I don't want a phone call, I want to seethe doctor. Why can't I?

A: You can. No request for an appointmentis refused. It may be with a different doctoron some occasions however, as we are atraining practice and have a number of

part-time doctors. Simply use the call withthe doctor to book a convenient time thatday.

Q: I can't discuss confidential things in myopen plan office

A: There is no need to if you tell the doctorit is personal and you simply want anappointment. The doctors will try toremember to ask if it is OK to talk when theyspeak to you.

Q: I can't wait in all day for a call back; Ihave things to do

A: We don't expect you to; our aim is tomake this system MORE convenient notLESS and most calls are returned within 30minutes in a morning and within 1 hour inan afternoon. Ask for the call back at aspecific time or within a time range if it helpsand we will honour this.

Q: I can't take a call back at all - what do Ido?

A: Ask reception to put you straight through. It may limit whom you can speak to butbetween 8 - 11:30 and 3 - 5:30 most doctorsare at their desks, although they may be busy.Alternatively leave a message with receptionthat you need to be seen today after 4 (forexample) and I will leave you an answerphone message with an appointment time.

Q: I rang and my chosen doctor was not in.I was told to call back the next day.

A: Check our website or the written detailsin reception that gives information about thedoctors and nurse practitioners rotas and thisshould advise you the best days to call.Reception has also been asked in thesecircumstances to book the call for the nextday but to advise the patient of the idealprocedure which is to call on the day ifpossible. The reason for this is that the longerahead people book their appointment themore likely they are to not be available whencalled.

Q: I can only call after work

A: There is a doctor available to take callsuntil 6:30pm. Alternatively, get a relative tocall for you if appropriate and book a surgeryappointment after work for you. Call thedoctor on a Saturday morning if there is noother alternative.

Q: I am deaf/I don't have access to a phone.

A: Just walk in between 9 - 11:30 am and 3- 5:30 pm and you will be seen, althoughthere may be a wait.

Q: I don't see why I need to give confidentialinformation to a receptionist.

A: We have always asked if patients are ableto give us an idea of what the problem is.This has not changed. It is not compulsoryand if a patient does not want to share thenplease say it is personal/private and receptionwill respect this. We ask in order to helpthe doctors to prioritise the calls.

Hopefully these suggestions may help manyof you. We have seen a dramaticimprovement in call answering times andmore details about this will be in the nextSCAN. There is still work to be done however.

MORE TO LIFETHAN ENJOYMENT

'O God, our help in ages past, our hope foryears to come…'Sometimes we feel that life isn't good unlesswe are happy. Adverts persuade us that thingslike chocolate, exotic holidays and newclothes will bring us constant happiness. ButI am no longer a good-looking single malein my twenties with an excellent figure andplenty of cash!

God has created us as humans with a wholerange of emotions: hope, anxiety, irritation, hate, despair, exhaustion, relief and so on,as well as joy, tenderness and love. Life ismore than happiness, like a mountain is morethan just its peak. Through these emotionswe respond to the inevitable troughs andpeaks in our imperfect lives. Our relationshipwith God enables us to cope each day -indeed, to more than cope - to grow: todevelop and deepen our character. We werecreated in the image of God; God has thesame emotions as us. God experiences even

those which are hurtful, but constantly showsus abundant love, carrying us even when westruggle. Let us pray that we can beChrist-like in our everyday lives and showthe love of God in everything we do,whatever our situation.

and surrounding villages.

St Christol les Ales is 30 miles to the north west of the Roman City of Nimes, and is on the edge of the Cevennes region of France in the Languedoc.

Google Earth will give you some idea of the region.

DatesSaturday 27 October to Wednesday 31 October 2012

and hugely historic.
