Stilton School Summer FeteThanks, everybody!

The Friends of Stilton School would like to say thanks for all of the help and supportthat we received from local businesses for the summer fete. A number of businessesdonated a raffle prize, including The Bell, The Talbot and The Stilton Cheese.

A special thanks goes to The Angel Spice, who turned up on the day and served foodand refreshments and donated all monies to the school, and BOC, the British OxygenCompany, who donated all the balloons and the helium for our balloon race, whichwas a huge success, Niki Lister who provided the music and PA system, the Year 6pupils who were a credit to the school, and finally to Kevin Adcock, who did a fantasticsign for the summer fete which I am sure everyone noticed coming in to the village.

I would also like to thank the parents on the FOSS committee and those who came tohelp on the day for all their hard work. It was a great event.

Many thanks, Alison Tanton - Smith

The Paper ChaseHOW SCAN GETS INTO YOUR LETTERBOX

Believe it or not, there are some SCAN readersso addicted to the words of wisdom wepeddle in this august publication that theyget quite upset if it doesn’t appear promptly!

So as this, er, August publication might bearriving late because even volunteers takeholidays, we thought it would be timely toremind readers of the tortuous chain of eventsit takes to get SCAN to you.

Every month since we started over 25 yearsago, each house in Stilton has received a freecopy of SCAN. Today, it’s delivered by 44volunteers, rain or shine. Some have a smallround, perhaps just their own street; otherstake on a whole estate, which can be as manyas 90 houses.

If your copy doesn't reach you at thebeginning of the month it’s most probablynot your distributor's fault, but the end resultof a hiccup in the long production cycle.

Even before you get your month’s copy theEditor, Olive Main and Production Manager,Kelvin Davis, are on the lookout for suitablematerial for the next issue. We keep our earsand eyes open, listen to the gossip, remindorganisations to send us their news in goodtime and gradually accumulate the material.

Kelvin works his magic on the computer -most of a weekend’s magic in fact - andaround the third weekend of the month Olivetakes the copy to Caresco’s Printshop inSawtry. Caresco are the only people whoget paid for their services!

Printing takes about a week, after whichCarol Warren brings 1200 copies back to ourDistribution Manager, Dave Severn. Hecounts out and delivers the copies to eachdistributor. Every single one of these peopleis a volunteer and doesn't even claimexpenses - it’s their contribution to the Stiltoncommunity.

Underpinning all this is the work of theAdvertising Manager, Jan Woodward. Theadverts are SCAN's only income and when wedo well we can make small grants to villageorganisations as well as subsidise the annualfireworks display. SCAN may well be the onlyvillage newsletter that does make a profit;the whole village gains from it andeverybody in the chain can be proud of beinga part of its success.

SCAN has proved itself a very effectiveadvertising platform; some businesses findthey don't need to advertise anywhere else.Local start-up businesses in particular havefound SCAN very helpful.

If you want to advertise, the rates & data arealways displayed at the back of SCAN. In thefirst instance, ring Jan on 243278 (NOT theEditor!) and take her advice on the best wayto get yourself noticed in our pages.

SCAN can only ever be as good as all thesevolunteers can make it, so if you think youcan help us make it better, with articles, recipes, puzzles, or even just giving adistributor some respite care, please get intouch!

Scam, Scam, Scam, Scam...WATCH OUT FOR THESE REAL CON JOBS

The OldPhone Scam

It seems that scams are like wine, womenand cheese - the old ones are always the best.We thought this particular one had died out,but not so. Astute SCAN readers won’t fallfor it of course, but you may know someonevulnerable who would appreciate thewarning.

Victim receives an unsolicited telephone call, purporting to be from BT’s billing serviceand threatening to cut off the line if anoutstanding bill isn’t paid immediately bycredit or debit card. Perpetrator ‘proves’ theycan do this by asking victim to hang up andthen try dialling out. Victim is unable to doso because the perpetrator is still holding theline open. The object of course is to frightenthe victim into parting with their card details.

Whilst BT does have debt handlingprocedures which may involve callingcustomers, BT never carries outdisconnections during the call by way ofproof.

‘Your computerhas a problem’

Quite a few people have reported this onerecently. The phone rings and the caller asksfor the householder, quoting their name andaddress before saying "I'm calling fromMicrosoft. We've had a report from yourinternet service provider of serious virusproblems from your computer." - or someplausible-sounding version of this.

Dire forecasts are made that if the problemis not solved, the computer will becomeunusable.

The worried owner is then directed to theircomputer, and asked to open a programcalled "Windows Event Viewer". Its contentsare, to the average user, worrying: they looklike a long list of errors, some labelled"critical". "Yes, that's it," says the caller."Now let me guide you through the steps tofixing it."

The computer owner is directed to a websiteand told to download a program that handsover remote control of the computer, and thecaller "installs" various "fixes" for theproblem. And then it's time to pay a fee:£185 for a "subscription" to the "preventativeservice".

As you might have guessed, there was neveranything wrong with the computer, the calleris not working for Microsoft or the ISP, andthe owner has given a complete strangeraccess to every piece of data on their machine.

Fleecing the LazyThis isn’t a scam, although arguably that’sa matter of opinion. If you’re an AA member, when you get your annual renewal notice,go to the AA website, enter the exact samedetails of your cover and see what the onlineprice is. It will probably be a lot lower.

Then phone the AA and give them grief aboutit. SCAN and a colleague each got £60+reductions on the spot, no quibble. If, likemany people, you just file away the renewalyou’re almost certain to be taken for a ride.So make a fuss!

Rogue TradersLET’S STOP THEM PREYING ON THE VULNERABLE

Does this sound familiar:

"The moss on your roof needs removingotherwise it will cause damage...."

"You've got a loose tile on your roof..."

"I have some tarmac left over from a job...."

"We were working on your neighbour’swhen we noticed ..."

"The trees in your garden need cutting backotherwise........."

These are some of the false claims made byrogue traders who have cold called topersuade people to pay for services or goodsthey don’t want or need.

These rogue traders target the elderly andvulnerable and deliberately overcharge forunsatisfactory, unnecessary, or even no workat all. Work is left unfinished, propertydamaged and often intimidation is used toobtain money. People have even been takento the bank to withdraw their savings.

The police are working with TradingStandards and other agencies to stop andarrest these unscrupulous "traders". But weneed your help. Have you had cold callersknock at your door touting for business?Have you had flyers advertising services putthrough your letter box and still have them? Are there any "traders" that you are unsureabout in your area? Do you suspect yourneighbour is being targeted and ripped offby a "trader"?

If you have answered yes to any of thequestions, we want to know details of thetraders and their vehicles. Contact the Policeon 0345 456 456 4 or Trading StandardsConsumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. Sendany suspicious flyers to CambridgeshireTrading Standards, Cambridgeshire CountyCouncil, PO Box 450, Cambridge, CB236ZR. for the attention of Adrian Love.

Chicken RustlingOwners of ducks and chickens are asked tobe particularly vigilant after a number ofpoultry thefts; the most recent being in Farceta couple of weeks ago. Between 8pm onJuly 13 and 6:30am the following morning, offenders stole five chickens and a cockerelfrom a property in Straight Drove. They alsostole an unknown make of .22 air rifle andpellets from the property.

Poultry keepers are urged to be vigilant andreport any suspicious behaviour to the police.Did anyone see or hear anything? Did anyone

see any suspicious vehiclesaround? If so, please reportit on 0345 456 456 4.

Thank you to all who responded to ourdiscussion on Police Community SupportOfficers (PCSO). The answers that wereceived, as well as a selection of thecomments - both positive and negative - cannow be seen on the police website atwww.cambs.police.uk/recruitment/pcso/questions.asp

PCSOs provide a vital role in makingcommunities safer and the majority ofrespondents to our PCSO discussion agreethat PCSOs are an asset to their local area.It is important to understand that a PCSO isnot a replacement for a police officer; theyare there to fulfil a completely different role.

PCSOs provide a vital link to the communityand attend various local meetings, whichenables police officers to spend more timeout patrolling. PCSOs are responsible foranswering queries from residents, whichagain saves valuable officer time and allowsfor greater consistency. They spend themajority of their time out in their local

community, so they get to know residentsand can fully understand the issues of thatparticular area. They form a visible policepresence in the community and, while theydo not have the power of arrest, they are ableto provide valuable support to those officerswho do and it is often information and localknowledge provided by a PCSO that leadsto a successful arrest.

On top of their day job, many of our PCSOsget involved in their communities out ofhours, to help with fundraising, running localyouth groups and assisting vulnerableresidents. PCSOs play a vital role in thecommunity and are an asset that no policeforce could live without.

Thank you again to everyone who took partin the discussion and sent us a comment. Theforce continually reviews the use of PCs,PCSOs and Specials and your feedback willbe used to shape deployment in the future.
