WWe all remember that wall paper that we particularly hated or loved in grandma’s house.Th ese days, however, wallpaper options are far more exciting than the boring fl orals of yesteryear. So ditch the paint can, and celebrate the new direction of wallpaper. Dress your walls with hot colors and funky designs, the sheen of metals, or muted tones and historical patterns. From $15 per roll for standard wallpaper—for the most common, but perhaps the most durable—to $300 for a roll of high-end, hand-crafted paper, choices abound.

Wallpaper is one of the least expensive ways to dramatize a room that’s devoid of any architectural interest. I love wallpaper in a bathroom, kitchen, or a bedroom, but usually not in a room where you spend a lot of time. However, in a very soft or muted tone might feel just right in a much-used area. Splendid, well-drawn, well-colored, beautifully-scaled wallpaper can be a tremendous help to a room. Nevertheless, much that’s available is hideous. It’s a little like choosing wallpaper for your computer home page; you need to be sure your choice of wallpaper is something that you’ll love to see when you wake up each morning and something that will put you in the right frame of mind for each day. But it’s also important to consider style and practical issues before you venture into the wallpaper store. If your walls are in poor condition, a heavily embossed wallpa-per will minimize the eff ects of an uneven surface. Candice Ol-sen of HGTV even employs it on old plastered ceilings. Pauline B. Guntlow, author of Be Your Own Home Decorator tells us, “If you have an old house where the fl oors slope and walls are slightly crooked, don’t use a striped wallpaper on the walls since it tends to accentuate the crookedness. If you have a room with angled ceil-

ings, use a printed wallpaper that has a light background. Apply the wallpaper to the ceiling side of the angle and make curtains that match the wallpaper. Th e result will be that the angles will apear to recede.” We asked noted designer Jack Poles, owner of J. Poles Interiors and Wallpaper Your World in Atlanta to guide our readers through the complexities of wallpaper. Incidentally, Poles was named by Traditional Home as one of the 20 Young Designers to Watch for 2010.

GFM: How does one get started in choosing the right wallpaper?Poles: Pull all your materials together, such as your carpet sam-ples, paint samples, and existing fabric samples to match the paper with those items.

GFM: Traditionally, one would consider smaller patterns in small rooms so as to have the pattern appear several times before it meets the baseboard and larger patterns for large rooms. Do you think the proportions of the room and the wallpaper pattern should match?Poles: Today, there really isn’t a standard when it comes to pat-terns. Large patterns are very popular, so it doesn’t matter as much nowadays. You can choose anything you would like to use in your room.

GFM: Should we consider the size of a room before selecting the wallpaper color?Poles: Honestly, this is a personal choice. Th e myth of darker colors in a smaller room making it look smaller is sometimes false.

Darker prints can make the room appear larger. Same thing with large prints in a smaller space. Depending on the type of large print, it can make the room appear larger.

GFM: What’s the best way to measure your room for wallpaper?Poles: Measure the width and height (in feet) of the wall being pa-pered and multiply the two measurements: width x height = square footage. Add the square footage of each wall being papered together to calculate the total room square footage. Divide your total square footage by 22 to fi nd out how many SINGLE rolls of wallpaper you will need. Add the number of standard openings (doors and windows) found on the walls being papered. For every three standard open-ings, subtract one SINGLE roll from your single roll total. Since wallpaper is only sold in DOUBLE rolls, divide the num-ber of SINGLE rolls by two to calculate the number of rolls you will need to complete your project. Note: if your calculations do not add up to a whole number, always round up so you don’t run out of paper!

GFM: What are some of the practical considerations when mak-ing a choice?Poles: You must consider the type of room it is—bath, kitchen, bedroom—when determining which kind of paper you need. You must consider the condition of your walls. For example, a textured wallpaper adds a unique decorating scheme and is great for walls that are not completely smooth. A

PERRYThere is almost always some type of event going on at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry. Take a stroll around the lake or play on the playground at Rozar Park or walk the nature trail along side Big Indian Creek at Rotary Centennial Park. For excellent pizza and Italian food, you can’t beat Leta’s on the Square. They have a great kids menu, too. You can enjoy Southern cuisine at The Swanson, located in a historical house in downtown Perry.

GFM: How much help can one get from the wallpaper store?Poles: When a customer comes to our wallpaper store, he/she will be able to receive help as soon as they walk in. We help match colors to their tile and floor samples, paint, and carpet samples. We suggest which paper will be best for their room and situation. We offer tips to help make the whole process easier.

GFM: Does it matter which sticking-on process is used? Prepasted or unpasted?Poles: Wallpapers come either pasted or unpasted. Prepasted is easier. You simply moisten in a tray. However, you will need to consider what is on your walls currently and the condition that they are in. If you are hanging a wallpaper over existing paper or if your wallpaper is heavy, you will need to brush on additional paste. In that case, the unpasted is not particularly advantageous.
