7TH GRADE - EMOTIONS THROUGH ART

This quarter, students in Ms. McGehee?s ELL classes are studying novels. Eighth graders are reading Animal Farm. We will be looking more deeply into how this book is an allegory, or a story with two levels of meaning.

Another class is reading the book Number the Stars, a novel that takes place during World War Two. By reading this novel, students will get a better understanding of World War Two, a topic being studied in 7th grade I&S classes. We?re looking forward to a reward-ing and successful end to the year!

8TH GRADE - TACKLING EVEN MORE CLASSICS

Students from Ms. Weinmeyer and Mr. Magnuson?s classes are learning social, emotional thinking skills with Upst ream Ar t s. A grant was provided by Minneapolis Public Schools for our 12 week program.

Upst ream Ar t s is a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis that provides interactive arts programming to teach students social emotional learning. The curriculum uses the expressive power of the arts to help students develop life-long social and communication skills. Professional artists (dancers, actors, musicians, painters, and poets) lead the weekly activities.

Through the use of writing poetry and songs, drumming, painting, acting out scenes from their lives, and choreographing dances students explore emotions and self-expression through words, body language, vocal tone, rhythm/music, and color.

Helping us is our therapy dog, ?Golden Girl Getty? and her trainer Wendy. They come to us from North Star Therapy Animals and are a great addition to our learning making it extra fun.

We have recently wrapped up our annual service-learning project. For the third year in a row, 6th graders children in need and collected items for Sharing and Caring Hands in downtown Minneapolis and fleece to make blankets for the kids at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children?s Hospital on the West Bank.

Blowing past last year?s totals, An-thony 6th graders brought in:

- Nearly 3,000 used kids books for the kids at Mary's Place

- Nearly 1,000 stuffed ani-mals for the kids at Mary's Place

- Nearly 1,000 other toys for the kids at Mary's Place

- Various sets and sheets of fleece to make blankets

- Over $1,400 that was used to purchase additional fleece to make blankets for kids at the Children?s Hospital

On the days before and after spring break in Minnesota studies classes, we took all of the pur-chased and donated fleece and made 93 blankets of varying de-signs. All Anthony 6th graders in both Mr. Olson and Ms. Ricks? classes contributed to this work with additional support from Ms. Ricks? 7th grade classes. The con-tribution from the 7th graders was HUGE. Making these blankets

was a time consuming process. It could not have been done without them.

On Tuesday, April 10th, a carload of blankets went to the Children?s Hospital and NINE carloads of toys, stuffed animals, and books went to Sharing and Caring Hands. Both organizations were EXTREMELY grateful for the large donations. A very special thanks to all of the students who put in extra time helping after school and during activity time, to Ms. Ricks? 7th graders, our parent volunteers that helped make blankets and that helped haul stuff away, and to Ms. Goldammer, Ms. Wolf, and Mr. Maksymovych for helping deliver.

Athletics is going through the Equity and Diversity Impact Assessment (EDIA) process to identify and examine inequities in policies, practices, and procedures.

The district is seeking MPS middle and high school parents to participate in a focus group about athletics. The aim is to gather parents? perceptions and understandings of participation fees (e.g., fairness of fees, understanding of participation policy); and willingness to increase participation fees.

Below is a list of opportunities for families to participate in these focus groups. We encourage families to attend the focus group that is most convenient for them. We will be scheduling two focus groups per zone and have tried to ensure that they are held at various times of day. Healthy snacks will be provided.

present

All focus groups are open t o all MPS parent s. You will notice that some schools will provide specific language services. There will be a Spanish translator present at one of the sites but that site has yet to be confirmed. We will provide you with an updated list in next week?s News & Notes or if you would like it sooner, please reach out to REAA ([email protected]).

At hlet ics EDIA Parent Survey

In addition to conducting focus groups, we will be gathering parent feedback via an online survey. This survey is for ALL middle and high school parents, regardless of whether or not their child(ren) participate in athletics; there are questions relevant to parents whose child(ren) do not participate. Please put the link to the survey on your school webpage and feel free to share in any other ways (e.g., social media) that you see fit to connect with your families. If you would like paper copies of the survey, please reach out to REAA at [email protected].

If your student is interested in participating in the clinic, please advise her to see me as soon as possible.

With baseball and softball season just around the corner, we wanted to connect with you about a great opportunity this spring.

Minneapolis Public Schools is collaborating with the Minnesota Twins, Twins Community Fund, and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to create an opportunity for students to still be active in baseball and softball for this year and years to come.

This is great news, because Minneapolis Public Schools had to reduce some of its athletic offerings at the middle school level for the 2017-18 school year, including eliminating baseball/softball this spring.

Middle school athletes can, however, participate in the Minnesota Twins Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program. Students can access the program by registering individually at your nearest recreation center or continue to play with their teammates at school by registering their team through the same system. Individuals and teams will need to provide their own transportation to practices and games.

The RBI program will begin games on May 5 and continue through the end of July. You can find more information about the program by visiting TwinCitiesRBI.com. We would also be glad to visit your school to answer questions regarding the program.

If you have questions regarding the program, you can contact the following individuals:

- Dave Wicker, Minneapolis Public Schools ? (612) 668-0600, [email protected] - Tim Grate, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board ? (612) 230-6491, [email protected] - Josh Ortiz, Minnesota Twins ? (612) 659-3506, [email protected] - Frank White, Twins RBI ? (612) 282-3018, [email protected]

We hope to see you at the ballpark this RBI season!
