Dear Parents/Carers 'When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.' (Acts 2:2-4) Members of our community will look forward to Pentecost Sunday, this Sunday and following our Ascension Day mass last week our reflections in school have centred upon the gift of the Holy Spirt and how we serve as witnesses of God. I am delighted to report that Year 9 football team played brilliantly against Myton School on Thursday evening at the Oval and achieved a victory of 4-1. We are extremely proud of all members of the team and students now prepare for the tournament in Glasgow on the weekend of 25 th , 26 th & 27 th May. We wish the team the very best of luck as they represent England in the UK Schools Cup Finals. The whole school community will be right behind you boys!! The Year 11 GCSE and Year 13 A Levels examinations are underway now. We continue to keep students in our prayers as they sit these challenging examinations. We hope all your hard work pays off. We have two staff members leaving the school next week on Tuesday we say farewell to Mr Marvin, Teacher of Chemistry and wish him well on his retirement. Secondly, Ms Roache leaves us to take up a promotion as Head of Science in a Catholic school in Birmingham. We wish her all the very best in her new post and would like to thank both Mr Marvin and Ms Roache for all their commitment to the school. On Friday 25 th May we look forward to students participating in a Marian devotion of prayers devoted to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our devotion of prayers will be held in the chapel and lead by Miss O’Keefe and Fr Matthew and will involve many students from different year groups. Last Saturday members of the Senior Leadership Team attended the Midland Knowledge Schools Hub Conference. The day focussed on the power of a knowledge curriculum. We have already been implementing a knowledge curriculum since September 2017 to year 11 and year 10 which is now being rolled out across the school in preparation for September 2018. More information will be communicated to you about the exciting changes to the curriculum after half term. I’d like to wish you all a happy and Holy weekend. Catholic Life

Message from the Pope

“We need the Holy Spirit to transmit the faith. We

cannot do it alone.”

Weekly Prayer

Breathe in me O Holy Spirit

that my thoughts may all be holy;

Act in me O Holy Spirit

that my works, too, may be holy;

Draw my heart O Holy Spirit

that I love but what is holy;

Strengthen me O Holy Spirit

to defend that is holy;

Guard me then O Holy Spirit

that I always may be holy.

Pentecost Prayers

Almighty God, who on this day didst open the way of eternal life

to every race and nation by the promised gift of thy Holy Spirit:

Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel,

that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Dropping Students off at School

I would like to remind parents that we do not have lots of space on the driveway

as a drop-off zone. The expectation is that you drop off the pupils on the pavement main road or, even better, in the

Jubilee car park which is a much bigger space for this purpose. They should then enter the school through the appropriate pedestrian gates.

When collecting your child at the end of the day, you should park on the Jubilee car park allowing buses to park outside school without any obstructions

and not the putting children's safety at risk.

Double Success for Year 9 Football Team A very well done to our Year 9 Football Team, under the guidance of Mr Zeki who have managed to

pick up two trophies this week.

The first being at the Nuneaton Academy where they won the 7-A-Side Tournament for Year 9s.

The second a prestigious Warwickshire Cup Final where they took an early lead at the Oval in Bedworth and never really looked back, the score line 4-1 against Myton School.

Mr Williams Head of PE said: “ I can truly say we are really proud of our players tonight, the quality of their performance, the maturity for their age and the most important attribute is their teamwork and

respect for each other.

“It is always a privilege to work with such committed pupils. This team deserve every victory that they achieve!! Well done to all the players and thank you to all the parents for your outstanding support.

Now for Glasgow where they have qualified to represent England in the UK Schools Cup Finals on May 25 to 27.

have their deposit refunded. Any queries please contact Mrs Griffiths

Water Safety

Please be vigilant over the holidays in dry warm weather about children swimming in lakes, reservoirs and rivers. Teenagers in a group often dare each other to do

dangerous and challenging things without thinking through the possible consequences, so please do have a discussion with them about keeping safe at all times.

Lost Property

With the approach of warmer days, your child may realise that they have misplaced their coat! If you know that they are missing their coat (or any other item of uniform)

please ask them to go to Reception to inquire after it. We have an immense amount of lost uniform items. Please do write your child's name on the uniform so that we might

be able to get it back to them

Information LEAVE OF ABSENCE DURING TERM TIME UPDATED INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

The Supreme Court recently reached a decision in the case of Platt v Isle of Wight Council which has clarified the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays, during term time. The parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they attend school on a regular basis. The Supreme Court has made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that the children must attend school on every day that they are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child who is absent from school without authorisation for any length of time are likely to be considered as committing an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996. Head Teachers retain the ability to authorise leave in accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006. When considering such requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged to act within the law. Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances relating to the application. If the leave is granted, head teachers are able to determine the number of school days a child can be absent for. It is for the Head Teacher to decide what is ‘exceptional’ and it is at their discretion if the circumstances warrant the leave to be granted. The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the ‘resident’ parent. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis and on its own merits. Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child will be required to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice. Failure to make an application for leave in advance can also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the parent(s). All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave of Absence will be referred to the Attendance, Compliance and Enforcement Service of Warwickshire County Council It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices in the amount of £120 each, totalling £240 for both children, this is reduced to £60 per child if paid within 21 days). Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings under S444 Education Act 1996. Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices.

Your child’s progress academically as well as socially is our shared priority

Information

Stranger Danger

Dear Parents/Carers, We have received information from Mr. Kelly, Headteacher at Higham Lane School concerning a man who had approached a student on St Nicholas Park and another in Bedworth, whose behaviour was suspicious. At the time the description given was a man in a white Volkswagen Caddy van; he was a quite tall, black male of large build with shoulder length dreadlocks, with a scar on his right cheek and a silver piercing in his right ear. Since this report, several more students have come forward to report suspicious behaviour in a variety of locations including Horeston Park on Tiverton Drive and Buttermere Park. The descriptions have been similar and the man has either been alone or in a group of around 3 males. The students were worried that they may have been being followed and reports have been made to the Police. Our Policer Community Support Officer (PCSO) has increased patrols around the areas mentioned. Our PCSO has given advice that students should try to walk/cycle in pairs or groups and has asked that if you were to be approached, that you call 999 and advise the operator of your location.

I would also like to remind you of the importance of being careful when you are out. If you walk to and from school, try to walk with friends in a group and never go anywhere with someone you don’t know.

Remember:

Try to avoid walking/cycling alone – especially after dark.

Be aware of people around you.

Stay to well-lit roads or main paths.

If you feel uncomfortable and you are able to, go to the home of a friend if nearby and ask for help or to a local shop and tell them you are worried.

Do not be tricked into invitations to accompany someone you do not know, sit in someone’s car or go to their house. Seek help immediately if anyone does this.

If someone did try to grab you it is ok to break all the rules of politeness to others e.g. scream, kick, punch, bite etc to draw attention and alert others to the fact that you are in danger.

Please also remember that sometimes a stranger can be the only person who can help us and is a far safer option than not talking to anyone; if you feel uncomfortable in any situation go to the nearest public building, for example a shop, or a public place. Whilst it is important we remain vigilant it is equally important to remember that not ALL strangers are “bad”.

Tell an adult straight away if you have any concerns.

Thank you and keep safe.
