HUMAN RIGHTS
Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the lifeand achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. an influential American civil rights leader. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the UnitedStates.
ROSA PARKS
Within the project on ra-cism taking place in ourschool, we decided todramatize the incident withRosa Parks. It was on December 1, 1955 that Rosa made her famous stand (while sitting) on the bus. Rosa had settled
in her seat on the bus after a hard day's work. All the seats on
the bus had filled up when a white man boarded. The bus drivertold Rosa and some other African-Americans to stand up. Rosarefused. The bus driver said he would call the police. Rosa didn'tmove. Soon the police showed up and Rosa was arrested.Rosa was charged with breaking a segregation law and was told topay a fine of $10. She refused to pay, however, saying that shewas not guilty and that the law was illegal. That night a number ofAfrican-American leaders, among them Martin Luther King, gottogether and decided to boycott the city buses. This meant that
Africans would no longer ride the buses. It wasn't easy for peo-ple to boycott the buses as many African-Americans didn't havecars. They had to walk to work. The boycott continued for 381days! Finally, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the segregationlaws in Alabama were unconstitutional.SEGREGATION
During this time, the city of Montgomery, Alabama was segregated. This meant that things were differ-ent for white people and black people. They had different schools, different churches, different stores, different elevators, and even different drinking fountains. Places often had signs saying "For ColouredOnly" or "For Whites Only". When Rosa would ride the bus to work, she would have to sit in the back inthe seats marked "for coloured". Sometimes she would have to stand even if there were seats open upfront.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. He led non-violent protests tofight for the rights of all people including African Americans. Over250,000 people attended this march in an effortto show the importance of civil rights legislation. Some of the issues the march hoped to accom-plish included an end to segregation in publicschools, protection from police abuse, and to getlaws passed that would prevent discrimination inemployment. It was at this march where Martin gave his "IHave a Dream" speech. This speech has becomeone of the most famous speeches in history. TheMarch on Washington was a great success. TheCivil Rights Act was passed a year later in 1964.How did he die?Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April4. 1968 in Memphis, TN.
