Cafeteria News
Hi Everybody,
We would like to thank you all for the suggestions we have
been getting from both students and staff, please keep them
coming, they are what help us get to try different things. Would
love to hear a little more input about the salad bar and any new
things you might like us to try and get on it. Thank you all for
letting us get good food to you through your input.
The Cafeteria Staff
We hope everyone is having a GREAT & SAFE start to
school! October is SAFETY Month!
We are working hard to ensure student safety in and out of the school buses. In order to do that we need every-
one’s support. Be aware of the danger zone.
This is the 12 feet around the entire school bus where the driver cannot see you if you are within the 12 foot
zone! Please do not approach the school bus until it is
secured and the driver gives you the indication that it is now SAFE to approach or board the bus.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY-“FACTOID” Of THE MONTH:
It is a State of New Mexico regulation that students be
waiting for the school bus to arrive by at least 5 minutes prior to school bus arrival time and ready to board.
Lately on most routes, the school bus is having to wait for students to get out of vehicles, homes, gather be-
longings, etc., please be sure you are outside at your bus stop and ready to board. Having to wait delays other
stops and possible late arrival to school. Let’s get to
school on time, ready to learn and we can do that when everyone is on time !!!! Happy & Safe Traveling!!!

THE WHEELS ON THE BUS
The trash pick up was on September
18. We started out at the school and
ended up at Walatowa, then came all
the way back to the school ending at 11:00 am. We picked
up lots of trash! We found some exotic thing like a huge
speed limit sign and a inflatable Dora.
Although it was a long walk we had a lot of fun! Not very
many people came but the turn out was still great! Mrs. Mi-
jares helped us and she even started a contest “who ever
finds the biggest piece of trash gets a candy bar” we all tried
but Heather and Izzy found the biggest by far. We put a lot
of hard work into it and I hope you enjoy our hard work!
Thank you Mrs. Mijares!

First, thanks to everyone for your help with
the middle school part of our great Back-to-
School Bash -- the faculty sponsors (Ms. Dunham, 6th,
Mr. Marley, 7th, and Ms. Mijares, 8th), class officers,
many terrific parents and teachers, Diana Lucero, Sissy
and Tom Griego, Louis Gachupin, Linda and Gary
Gazaway. And of course, all of the elementary teachers
too! Lots of fun activities, delicious food, and good com-
pany. Mr. Parker and I actually enjoyed getting dunked in
the dunk tank!
Hard to believe, but our first 9 weeks grading period ends
on Tuesday, October 12. As I always tell the students,
every day is an opportunity to do the right thing, to make
a better choice, to do your finest work. Our vision for
our students is that they will be responsible, respectful,
kind, caring people, as well as successful, enthusiastic,
lifelong learners.
Students will receive new accountability cards for the
next 9 weeks grading period. When I conduct monthly
card checks, students who have no new entries on their
accountability cards for behavioral infractions will have
their names entered for a drawing for BIG prizes at the
end of the year. Every time a student has a clean card, it
improves his or her chances to win! Also, students who
have Kudos written on their accountability cards will re-
ceive an AttaBoy or AttaGirl which they can redeem for
free popcorn!
October is Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Let’s
show our JVMS spirit and make sure that every person is
treated with respect.

King Tutankhamen’s sudden death at the age of seventeen remains shrouded in mys-tery- was it an accident, or was it murder? This remains to be discovered by our 6
th grade
group of Egyptologists. The 6th graders have learned that the royal embalmer thought that
King Tut’s skull appeared to have been damaged. But the high priest, Ay, refused to set up an inquiry into the boy’s death. The funeral was hastily arranged and the pharaoh was buried in a rock tomb. Stay tuned to learn more.
What does it take to be a published author? The seventh grade New Mexico History class is discovering just that as they each rise to the challenge of creating their own stories about the life and times of the Mimbres people. This is just one of the means by which the 7
th grade
is now discovering as much as can be known about New Mexico’s ancient cultures. In answer to the question from the September newsletter – Santa Fe (the oldest city in the U.S.) was founded in 1608, twelve years before pilgrims from Europe established the Plymouth Colony. What could be more interesting than reading about the American Colonies? How about writing? The 8
th grade is completing their second monthly essay on the motivations for American Coloni-
zation. The essays help to fulfill the state standard for learning about the colonial process; and the students get to refine their research and essay writing skills. Each student is keeping a port-folio of written material and the intention is to see the writing skills get stronger.
As always, Mr. Knox and Ms. Mijares welcome parent input and participation. We can be reached by following
the links on the school’s website or by calling the voice mail. We hope to see you at parent teacher conference.

PTA is a group of people that work really hard volunteering their time for ALL the students in our
schools. With that said, we want to extend a VERY SPECIAL & HUGE THANK YOU to Laura Mijares and all those parents and individuals who have currently volunteered their time to help out with
Soccer every Thursday evening! The students love this time, soccer is a success because of you!!! Thank you!
Thank you for helping with the PTA fundraiser. These fundraisers bring in much profit for our school which in turn these monies get used to help fund events and field trips for our students.
PTA will have an information booth set up at the back to school bash with information about who we are and what we
do for our school. We are also looking for new officers: President and Secretary Positions are open feel free to stop by and inquire. We are also looking for more parents to get involved with their child’s education and to join PTA. We will
have signup sheets at this booth for areas in which we need the extra help. Please stop by and chat with us and dis-
cover how you too can volunteer to help out and give back to your community. Parent and community involvement is the key to a successful child. Get involved. See ‘ya there!

Three weeks ago the
eighth grade class
conducted research
on the speed of wa-
ter flow at the river.
Students wrote down their data over five days and
found that the water speed decreased. Students
think that the rea-
son is because of
the lack of rain-
fall.

The leaves are turning and the air is get-
ting chilly, fall has arrived! In the art room we are
busy making owls with clay, printing an array in
pop art style, and trying out some optical illusions.
This October we will learn to blend chalk pastels by
creating pumpkin drawings on black paper. We will
discover lots of ways to use the medium in our art.
The art room is in need of old newspapers, old
magazines, and any scraps of cloth or yarn you
may want to get rid of.
There are lots of art events this month around the
state. Albuquerque's International Balloon Fiesta
began October 2nd and ran through October
10. This was a great opportunity for kids to see the
artful creations in the air. From the magnificent
special shapes to the traditional balloons with
unique color patterns and designs. To find out more
about different events around the state, check out
www.newmexico.org and look over the calendar.
Enjoy this fall and the
wonderful colors that are
beginning to emerge all
over our beautiful valley.
Ms. C’deBaca re-
ports that her classes
are half-way or more
into their first novel.
Upon finishing, stu-
dents get to watch
two versions of the
movie based on each
book. As a final wrap
-up, students will be com-
paring and contrasting the
movies and how also ex-
cited to move on to their
next novel...the title, for
now, will remain a secret.
