Church News Rich tweedy

Hi folks,

One of the challenges facing the church is being wise in knowing how to adapt to the changing culture, while keeping to the core values of what we believe. We live in a nation that is becoming increasingly post-modern and – possibly more importantly for the church – post-Christendom. We can’t avoid this reality, whatever we might think of it.

We therefore need to do church in increasingly diverse ways – so that while we continue to cater for existing churchgoers, we also do things in attractive ways that are meaningful for those who come only occasionally – or for those who are yet to come!

So there are some Sunday services which are particularly helpful to those who have been churchgoers for many years. For example, there are a small number that are done using the Book of Common Prayer; but we recognise that the language contained within it, while beautiful for some, is a barrier for many.

We’re therefore beginning to explore how we do church in new ways. At the end of October (Sunday 30th, 10am in Shapwick) we’ll be doing our pilot café church, which we’ll be doing on a monthly basis from January.

Meanwhile, we’re also launching a Messy Church in the early part of next year.

This is how it’s described on their website (www.messychurch.org.uk):

It is a way of being church for families involving fun

It is found across the world

Its values are about being Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration

This is an exciting new venture for the churches of the Polden Wheel, as we seek to serve primary-aged children and young families. It’s one part of how we are developing different ways of doing church in the area.

Every blessing

Our speaker at our October Meeting was eagerly anticipated for who doesn’t like chocolate and our speaker was going to demonstrate the art of chocolate making! Deanna told us that she began to experiment with chocolate as therapy while recovering from an illness. Having started quite small, producing presents for friends and family, she now makes a wide range of chocolate including bars in many different flavours such as chilli & lime, ginger and lemon meringue. She sells at various country fairs around the region and has even produced samples for the Queen.

She treated us to a variety of wonderful tasters which were all absolutely delicious. We watched as she heated her chocolate and poured it into moulds as she gave us a brief history of the cocoa bean. We all then had the chance to stock up on some early Christmas treats. The meeting was well attended and everyone enjoyed the evening. Our November meeting will be on Tuesday, 8th November, 7.30pm at Shapwick Village Hall and our speaker will be Nerina Scott – “Homemade Christmas Decorations”

We have lots of exciting events and speakers planned already for 2017. New members are always welcome so do come along and join us.

Dyslexia Awareness Week - #Dyslexia2016

The first week in October saw Shapwick School take an active part in “Dyslexia Awareness Week”, this was not only to raise awareness of Dyslexia but also to raise funds for Dyslexia Action.

The week was full of lots of activities for all students.

The Dining Hall and Manor Hall were adorned with balloons, bunting, green fairy lights and displays focusing on ‘Lighting It Green’ for Dyslexia, and Dyslexia Action.

Some of our non dyslexic staff pledged to do something that makes life awkward for them during the week. This was to mirror the struggles that those with dyslexia encounter—if they were caught not sticking to their pledges a donation was made to Dyslexia Action, this made it quite an expensive week for some.

Using our Dyslexic Cookbook, which includes contributions from both parents and staff, cakes were made each day, this included Lemonade Scones, American Oat Cookies , Jewelled Brownies (made by Josh Marsh) and Tea Leaf and Cinnamon Cupcakes.

Days 1 and 2 Years 8 and 9 took part in an interactive workshop with Somerset Road Safety Partnership while Years 10 and 11 spent a Taster Day at Bridgwater College.

Later in the day some of our students took part in bag packing at Tesco in Glastonbury where we raised £142 for Dyslexia Action in just 90 minutes of perfect packing! An Achievement Tree was put in the Dining Hall which displayed staff and student aspirations for this year. ‘Light It Green Letters’ were written all week, these reflected students' emotions around their specific learning difficulty particularly their diagnosis.

Days 3 and 4 Early Wednesday morning kicked off with the “Dyslexia Dash” around the field. In true Shapwick style our students were blind-folded, linked together, on shoulders…. They then did as many laps as possible in 20 minutes whilst covered in sparkly green face paint! It certainly was a sight to see!

Wednesday was also "National No Pens Day" - Teachers put pens to the side and focused on learning by doing more than ever. Years 8 and 9 spent the day on Duke of Edinburgh training - putting up tents, planning routes and checking equipment before setting off on Thursday in the cold sunlight for the Quantock Hills on an overnight expedition.

Our Deputy Head spent Thursday tracking a Year 11 student through all of her lessons - A Day In The Life of Ella Lodge..... Two students, Ewan and Charlie, spent part of the day with our Maintenance Team doing a great job on the beds at the front of the Manor.

Day 5 On Friday both staff and students had a green “non- uniform” theme, complete with our charity wristbands and green face paint. Students spent some time interviewing dyslexic staff and asked them about their greatest struggles and achievements.

Reception duties today were ably carried out by one of our Year 10 students, Sophie Long. The “Voice of Shapwick” at the moment is Daisy Kearney-Bryan; the school answerphone message has been redone by Daisy.

Our Celebration Assembly saw prizes given for “Most Organised Students”, the “Read-athon” and some of our students’ Light It Green Letters, written during the week. Star of the Week, for excelling on his Duke of Edinburgh expedition was Charlie Merson.

Not only did the week raise awareness of Dyslexia it was a week full of fun, everyone had a great time whilst raising lots of money.

Temporary Road Closure From 8th November 2016 for 3 days School Lane from the junction with Mill Lane to the junction with Church Close will be closed to allow Wessex Water to carry out works.

Proposal from RSPB/Natural England : Parking at Ham Wall and Ashcott Corner to be charged As of 14th November 2016 the RSPB and Natural England propose to introduce a formal parking fee on their car parks at Ham Wall and Ashcott Corner, Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve. The standard charge in both car parks will be £3.00 per vehicle. This will replace the current informal donations-led parking fee, which has not raised the expected level of revenue and has proved insufficient even to maintain the current provision of services. The reason for this formalisation is to increase the funds raised to support the long term strategic management and enhancement of these important facilities alongside contributing to the sustainable nature conservation management on both reserves. Within the Ham Wall car park RSPB members will be able to park free of charge. Natural England proposes to introduce a regular user’s annual pass of £30.00 per annum for its Ashcott Corner car park.
