The Bayside City Council’s Youth Services hosted the conference for young people, which was designed to inspire a new generation of students to stand up against bullying. Students attended a number of sessions over the day which educated and inspired them to say no to bullying and then equipped them to take the message back to their schools. The day was interactive and fun, bringing together young people across the Bayside area. Canteen Reminder If your child has a lunch order, please remind them to place it in the blue bin at the office by 9.10am. Lunch orders coming to us at recess or after the lunch bell make it very challenging for us in the canteen. Also, please ensure that orders are clearly marked with your child's name and class. Book Week Year 1,2,3 and 5 were very lucky to have a visit from author Geroge Ivanoff today who wrote the you choose series. He talked about his books the 'you choose series' and how to write a book. Absences We would like to remind parents if your child is away we require a note explaining their absence. You can phone the school office to report an absence or go to the school website and click on the contact us link and fill out the online absence form.

What’s ‘Appening’?

We thought we would share some of the Apps that are useful for literacy and numeracy

development. They are fun and provide another medium to learn through.

Futaba Word games for Kids – Great for word study, can be played solo or with up

to 4 players. The idea is simple; each player takes a seat around the iPad and taps in

to start. The game begins as images zoom into the playing area. The first player to

match the word to the image scores a point. Win 3 rounds and your will be awarded a

giant seedling.

Chicktionary – This is a fantastic game for the whole family. You need to unscramble

a roost full of letters and create as many words as possible. The words fill up the

egg cartons. It is a great challenge. Good luck!

King of Maths – This is a fast paced mathematics game with lots of fun and diverse

problems in different areas. You start as a farmer the more questions you answer

the closer you get to being KING!

Wipeout Wall – The aim of this game is to break down the wall in the quickest time

by correctly knocking out the bricks displaying the answer. You can work on your

tables, addition, subtraction or division. Have fun.

If you have any Apps that you think would help others learn please share them with Mrs Pyke

LEVEL LOW DOWN

Prep This week has been a really exciting week for the Preps! On Tuesday they were lucky enough to have Asher from Learning by Doing teaching us wood work skills to create our very own old fashioned spinning top. We used “hammers and swords” (coping saws!) as well as sand paper and glue. On Wednesday we all enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book character to help celebrate Book Week! Ash as Mr. Strong (PW), Erin as Mary Poppins (PR), Polly as Hermione from Harry Potter (PA) and Milo as The Gruffalo (PF).

Year Two

We were so excited to have Carp Productions visit us to celebrate Book Week. The best short-listed books of 2014 were brought to life in front of our eyes! Lola, Immy, Marvin, Henry, Jack and Tom were lucky enough to became characters in the hilarious performance. During Book Week we have focused on the book ‘The Swap’ by Jan Ormerod. Amber and Sofia N wrote a fantastic poem about the book. I don’t have the right baby brother He’s just not right for me I’ll swap him with another One that’s not so dribbly! Off to the shop I go to get another bro I bought a panda that was black and white But after testing him it just wasn’t right I took the tiger to the café But all he wanted to do was play. Next I tried a pig But my goodness it was too big! Next I bought twin rabbits But they had too many bad habits. There was no other except my brother, So I took him home again for me and my mother. We can’t wait to read ALL the short-listed picture books before the winner is announced next Friday. More photos on page 9………...

Year One What a fun week we’ve had this week in Year One! Carp Productions came to visit on Tuesday and taught us

about so many amazing books that we can read and try and connect with. Wednesday was such a highlight.

We loved dressing up as our favourite book characters. We read so many books this week. Two of our

favourites were “King Pig” and “I’m a Dirty Dinosaur”. We wrote blurbs to match these books…

“I’m a dirty dinosaur. I just don’t take a bath. I play away all day. I like to play lots in the mud! I’m a dirty

dinosaur my whole body is now very, very, very dirty and very muddy. I lie down in the bath and now I think I

might take a wash. Read on and see what will happen…” - Violet – 1C

“King Pig was bossing the sheep and being mean and he was doing his own things. How could he ever make the

sheep like him?” – Kiyara 1OD

Year Five Year 5 ‘Connected to Reading’ and celebrated Book Week dressing up as our favourite characters, created by talented authors. Students dressed up as Katniss Everdeen from ‘The Hunger Games’, Darrell from ‘Malory Towers’, Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood from the ‘Harry Potter’ series, Big Nate, Charlie from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ Mary Poppins, Alice from ‘Alice in Wonderland’, Dorothy from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, Fox Swift from ‘Fox Swift’, Anne of Green Gables, Specky Magee, Bethany Hamilton from ‘Soul Surfer’, Michael Jordan from ‘Michael Jordan The Life’ and Wally from ‘Where’s Wally’. Mrs Madden dressed up as Auggie Pullman from a much-loved class novel ‘Wonder’ and Mr Brown was the ‘BFG’. The Year 5 focus during Book Week was ‘Rules of Summer’ written by Shaun Tan. We explored this seemingly simple story about childhood and Tan’s fantastical oil painted scenes. The students created their own Tan inspired rules for living and shared a selection of ‘never’ and ‘always’ statements with the school at our special book week assembly. Never stop reading! Always choose a good fit book!

Year Four Meanwhile in Year 4, we celebrated Book Week by dressing up as our favourite book characters. We also read and analysed two great picture story books – ‘The Windy Farm’ and ‘Silver Buttons’. Here are just a couple of responses to ‘The Windy Farm’ by Queena (writing) and Aiden (pixel art).

YEAR 2

Year Six The year six students shared the story of The Treasure Box by Margaret Wild. Through the experiences of a small boy we explored, “What is Precious to us?” which prompted vigorous discussions. The Book Week assembly was a colourful event in support of our Book Fair.

Welcome to August parents, students and teachers, isn't it amazing to see some more sunshine! Here at Camp Australia we take a thematic approach to learning and therefore each week is about something educational, exciting and new! Last week at Beaumaris OSHC we celebrated Science Week. This was due to the suggestion and ideas of students of the program, and by our Science Club leader Mahaliyah. Monday we finally finished our OSHC garden. We planted sunflowers, forget-me-nots, butterfly mix flowers, mint and parsley. We had an amazing day outside planting and working out what would be ideal conditions for our plants to grow. We are all very excited to watch the progress of our garden over the coming weeks. As a group we all tested out the Mentos and coke experiment. We all made predictions of what we thought the reactions would be. Sadly though, the coke we had was old and didn't react the way in which it is meant to. We will re-try this later in the week. We have also played with light defusing paper, creating amazing patterns and colours. Following our exciting science theme the children have been exploring the idea of static electricity this week with balloons and our hair! Wednesday afternoon the children began make multiple tornadoes and explored how a vortex can be made in a kitchen with a few simple things. With a drink bottle or glass jar, a decent amount of dish washing liquid and glitter, the children created their own tornado!! This week we have celebrated Art week and have been running painting workshops, modelling with clay and getting as artistic as possible! The last few weeks have been fun filled and educational and we look forward to the exciting weeks ahead!
