WELCOME

A warm welcome to our first Nurture Group Newsletter.

It has been a transformational year at Nurture, with the addition of Gavin Jones and Grace Landscapes to the Nurture family.

I see it as a great privilege to have been trusted with the stewardship of these truly excellent companies, and I wish all of the talented employees that have joined us a rewarding career at Nurture.

Our people are our business and they make our business what it is today.

Wishing our employees and our clients a wonderful Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Peter Fane Managing Director

Our friends at Octopus Creative Thinking, created our original brand identity back in 2008. Ten years on, with Gavin Jones having joined us to form the Nurture Landscapes Group, it seemed like a good time to refresh our vehicle livery, and Octopus were the natural choice of partner.

The plan is that all 400 vehicles will be rebranded over the next year. The Gavin Jones vans will be the first to be upgraded, featuring the same overall wrap as the Nurture ones but with the Gavin Jones logo and Royal Crest.

The new livery should help to boost visibility and public awareness of the Nurture Landscapes Group.

The UK’s first Fleurs de Villes event happened this October in London’s Covent Garden.

Fleurs de Villes events pop up in various cities around the world. Top local florists, designers, growers and nurseries are invited to contribute displays of floral art, to showcase each city’s world-class talent.

Our client, Capco, asked us to design and exhibit a mannequin on their behalf. The design was created by Kenny Raybould, our head gardener at Covent Garden, with support from Clarissa James from our interiors team. They were inspired by the way Covent Garden blends old and new.

We were delighted to achieve 2nd Place in the Fan Favourite category, amid very stiff competition!

The team lead from each of the winning categories, along with the company directors and client will attend the ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House hotel on December 7th to collect the awards. There are a number of national winners in each category, but on the day only one contractor is chosen as the Principle Award winner.

The Nurture Group has collectively won over 60 BALI National Landscape Awards, of which 20 are Principal Awards. This reflects the consistently high quality work that the whole of the Nurture group strive for and deliver.

Paul Bean, Deputy Managing Director, Nurture, commented:

“Congratulations to all involved, whether or not we go on to be honoured with the Principal Award, winning six of these prestigious national awards is a great achievement.”

On 1 October we were delighted to welcome Grace Landscapes Ltd into the Nurture family.

The landscaping firm, which marked its 40th anniversary this year, was founded by Tim Grace in 1978, and was later joined by Hugh Pawsey in 1985 when the company went limited. It will continue to trade under the existing company name until January 2019, when it will rebrand as Nurture Landscapes.

Grace Landscapes provide high quality grounds maintenance and landscape construction across the North of England, with annual sales of around £6.5m. Based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, they have regional depots in the North East, North West and the Midlands, where they currently employ 116 staff and run a fleet of around 60 vehicles.

The majority of the Grace Landscapes portfolio is made up of corporate

clients, with a small amount of residential housing.

Operations will continue as normal during the transition period and beyond, ensuring continuity for their clients. One notable exception will be increasing their capacity for winter gritting services, which have not been a major focus until now. Nurture will look to offer and implement this to all of Grace’s customer base.

A new addition to the family

Grace Landscapes

Nick Hills, Nurture’s Northern Region Director, commented:

“Grace Landscapes are very well established in the industry. In many ways they are the Gavin Jones of the North. They fit our way of thinking and working, so they will fit in with Nurture very well. We’re honoured to be able to take on the Grace legacy. This will give us a much bigger presence in the North and in Yorkshire in particular.“

Chiswick Park

We are proud to continue flying the Green Flag this year, winning Green Flag Awards at eight sites we maintain.

Three of the sites are managed by Nurture Landscapes: Chiswick Park, Farnborough Business Park and Liverpool One, who have now been awarded Green Flag status for an impressive sixth consecutive year.

The other five sites are managed by Gavin Jones: Bluewater, Potters Fields Park, Cheshunt Park, Greenwich Park and Richmond Park, who also received a Green Heritage Site accreditation.

The Green Flag Award® scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. In particular it promotes good practice in the management of recreational public spaces, taking the needs of the communities that use them into account.

Congratulations to our clients, and a special thank you to all our team members for maintaining the sites to such a high standard.

DEXTER’S GARDEN

A Woking family had their year made after a number of local individuals and businesses came together to create a garden designed for disabled three-year-old Dexter to play in.

Gemma and Darren welcomed baby Dexter into the world in July 2015 but, due to a number of complications at birth, he was left with quadriplegic cerebral palsy: at three years old, he can roll but is unable to sit, stand, walk, speak or eat unaided.

Last year, the local community rallied round to raise the £10,000 needed for alterations to the family’s garden. The new design focused on making it a safer and more comfortable space for Dexter and his older sister Tiana to play in.

Supporter Simon Wright approached a number of local contractors and companies to help get the project started, and Gavin Jones were more than happy to get involved. Work began on 20 August 2018 and the garden was completed just two weeks later.

The family were completely blown away, saying: “We’re so lucky to have so many kind and generous people in our lives. An amazing gift given to us from the hearts of fabulous people, this will allow Dexter and Tiana the space to be children and explore their imaginations. You will never truly know how much you have done for us.”

A biodiversity flagship site for Gavin Jones

Gavin Jones have been managing the grounds at Kent’s prestigious retail and leisure destination, Bluewater, since 2004.

Managed for wildlife as well as beauty and practicality, the site has been awarded Green Flag status three years in a row. This year Bluewater has won South and South East in Bloom in the Business category, achieving the highest score in the section across

the whole country. The team of six who look after the 55 acres of green open space on the site, as well as the interior planting, also picked up Silver at the Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice, for enhancing Bluewater’s environment through biodiversity.

Contract Manager Scott Painter, who heads the team, has been based at Bluewater for the past

14 years, having started as Head Gardener.

Reflecting Bluewater’s strong commitment to sustainability and biodiversity, the team work hard to enhance the site for insect visitors as well as human ones.

The site already has one beehive and they will be installing three more next year. The team are doing a big drive to get Bluewater staff involved and the General Manager of the site has already expressed an interest.

“People actually visit now just to explore the grounds and we have received thank you letters from guests delighted by the way we manage the site for nature,” says Scott. “I’m hugely proud of my team and what we have achieved.”

Gavin Jones were the proud winners of the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Industry Award for Public Sector Sports Grounds Team 2018.

The IOG Industry Awards, celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, recognise leadership, innovation

IOG Award Winners 2018 and outstanding achievement across every aspect of groundscare. They acknowledge the passion and dedication of grounds care staff across all levels of sport and the challenges they face.

The awards received a bumper number of nominations and IOG

Chief Executive, Geoff Webb, commented, “The quality has really been exceptional.”

Congratulations to the team; James Downs, John Law, Jack Collyer, Dave Soul, Philip Cross, George Armstead, Alan Ford, Stuart Ford, Linden Rowe and Gary Turp.

Scott Painter, Contract Manager, commented:

“A year and a half ago we started planting 550,000 bulbs. We’ve also had another big push with wildflower seeding, using a specially developed mix. The wildflowers start to come through once the bulbs are going over, giving flashes of colour throughout the season, as well as providing a valuable food sources for pollinators.“

Pinewood memorial garden

Our winter gritting team is better prepared than ever!

With our bespoke system, Ice Master now in its second year, we are more responsive and reactive than ever to deal with even the harshest of winter seasons.

The system receives daily weather forecasts from the Met Office for every postcode area across the UK, which it uses to predict road surface temperatures. This enables us to activate jobs automatically for sites where ice is likely, streamlining the whole operation.

The winter gritting division at Nurture has grown considerably, with the customer base up 20% from last year, thanks to our dedicated gritting sales team. Our vehicle fleet across the country has also grown, so we’re all set to comfortably manage the increased portfolio as well as any additional demand.

WINTER GRITTING – READY TO GO

This August Nurture, who have managed the grounds at Pinewood Studios since 2009, completed work on a memorial garden dedicated to a producer that sadly passed away whilst filming a production at Pinewood.

The Pinewood Studios team, wanted to honour her memory by creating a garden where anyone working on site could take time out. The tranquil garden features two large oak pergolas, which have been planted with climbers. There is a central circle with benches backed by yew hedging, and a path runs through to further seating set in a wildflower meadow.

Steve Packman, Contracts Manager who managed the project, commented:

“The garden is now a lovely place to go and have a break, have lunch, or just sit and clear your head. We’re very pleased with the end result, as is the client, and we’re looking forward to seeing it mature.”
