Week2
Yr 6 Private Peaceful
Wow what a turn out! More children turned up than last time and this really made a
difference. Some children were having that much fun that they asked could they stay
longer to help! They packed and smiled their way through the day and made a grand
total of over £700 to go towards our Arts Festival! We are all really proud of our children
at Norwood, several people commented how pleasant, polite and well turned out the
children were.
Thank you to everyone that helped and of course to Morrisons for allowing the event to
take place.
Bag Packing at Morrisons
On Tuesday 1st March Year 6 travelled to Crosby Civic
Hall to watch a play called Private Peaceful. The play
is based on a book, of the same name, by Michael
Morpugo. The story is told through flashbacks and was
skilfully acted out by a single actor!
The play tells the story of Private Tommo Peaceful as
he remembers his life so far. He recalls such events as
his first day a school; the day his father died while
saving Tommo from a falling tree; his first job; his
brother marrying Mollie, who Tommo also loved; lying
about his age to join the army to fight during World
War I and being posted to the treacherous trenches of
France with his elder brother Charlie!
Very little in the way of props were used and there was no scenery, except for a pale
blue and white backdrop. However this did not detract from the story as Morpurgo’s
vivid description coupled with the occasional sound effect and the dramatic use of
stage lighting really brought the story to life.
Watch out for the release of the film version of Private Peaceful, due in cinemas later
this year!

Getting to Know Our Governors
Two of our reporters, Katie and Jamie, hijacked
Mrs Fletcher on her way to lunch to ‘grill’ her for
our article.
Q. Which aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
A. I really enjoy being with the children.
(Jamie Russell)
Q. How long does it take to become a governor?
A. I had to write a letter to the parents and they voted for
me. I was very pleased because I have been a pupil,
student and teacher at Norwood.
(Katy Watkinson)
Q. How long have you been a governor?
A. I have been a governor for about a year. I am on the
committees for Staffing and Premises.
(Jamie Russell)
Q. What do you like to do in your spare time?
A. I like to act and teach drama. I am directing ‘Tom’s
Midnight Garden’ at the Little Theatre in Southport at the
