This week the students have seen the Primary Building and the field
turned into an Art Gallery for the Creative Art Exhibition. As part of
the exhibition the students were invited to take part in our annual
Oriental Weavers rug design competition. This year the competition
was linked to the Tahya Masr Fund, which is also the theme for the
Creative Arts show, which you will hear more about in next week’s
Newsletter. The chosen theme for the rug design was the act of
giving. Hundreds of students entered the competition and it was
difficult to decide on the overall winners. Thank you to everyone who
took the time and effort to submit a design. I am pleased to announce
that the winners are:
Khadiga Tawfi (FS2 Violet)
Farida Amr Meghahed (Year 2 Green) & Jana (Year 2 Blue)
Maurice Andrawes (Year 6 Green)
Congratulations and well done!

…we have been exploring and learning about different
sea creatures. We now know a lot of fun facts about
octopi, starfish, dolphins and crabs. The sea is full of
exciting and beautiful animals! Moreover, we had lots
of fun pretending to be at the beach and building
sandcastles using buckets and spades. In Art, we used
our creativity to draw and paint accurate pictures of fish
and we also decorated dolphins using mosaic tiles. We
were very proud of our colourful masterpieces. In
Maths, we enjoyed the challenge of using objects to add
and subtract two single-digit numbers.
…this week in FS2 Red, we have been reading the story
of the Jolly Postman as part of our new topic 'Let's
Pretend'. We have all been super excited to post
letters to different characters in the story asking them
questions and waiting to receive their replies. Some of
us decided to draw maps to help the Jolly Postman
deliver the letters to different characters. Others have
had fun taking turns pretending to be the Jolly
Postman and using the bikes to deliver the letters. In
Literacy, we have written our own stories using our
phonic knowledge to help us spell out the words. In
Art, we have painted pictures of the Jolly Postman and
followed instructions to make our own story puppets.
As you can probably tell we are really enjoying the
story and linking all our learning to it. Watch out for us
around the Primary atrium you never know we might
be delivering a letter to you!

…we have had a busy couple of weeks. The story of ‘The Jolly Postman’, delivering letters around fairy tale land,
allowed us to display our performance skills on stage in front of a large audience. Back in the classroom, we have
started a new topic called Plants. At the moment, we are investigating seeds, beans and vegetable tops, making
predictions and finding out what they need to become healthy plants. When we cut open some fruit and vegetables
we were able to observe the seeds inside, which we are now trying to germinate, before planting them. In the atrium
we were able to investigate the shape of leaves, categorise the differences and record our findings on a graph.
…we have been continuing our learning about
Space! This week we have learnt about the Space
Race and now have a good idea about the timeline
of events that have led up to space exploration. We
have learnt many historical facts and have been
using these to help us to write recounts in our
English lessons. We really enjoyed reading about
famous astronauts but we all found that learning
about how Laika the dog died in space made us all
feel quite sad! Within the classroom, we have
helped to decorate a role play area space station,
creating rocket pictures in Art and also helping to
make a space themed small world tray. Let’s hope
that next week, our space learning really is out of
this world!

…we have been learning about two step multiplication problems. We worked in pairs solving really challenging
problems on large sheets of paper, so that we could easily present the solutions to each other. Did you know that
explaining what you have learnt to somebody else really makes you think carefully about the process? It has often
been said that you don’t really know anything until you teach it to somebody else! With this in mind, we also had a
selection of Class Experts on hand to help anyone who was finding the maths drifficult. The experts had to not only
complete the questions themselves, so that they knew the answers, but also help others to check their workings
and spot any mistakes that had been made. As well as offering support or advice if others were stuck. A much more
difficult task than simply working it out yourself…

…we have been busy learning about electricity as part of our
new Dragon’s Den topic. During our Science lessons we have
discussed the safety precautions that must be taken when
investigating and using electricity. In addition, we designed our
own posters to help others understand these dangers. We also
got the opportunity to carry out an experiment. Using a variety
of different materials, we tested whether they were conductors
or insulators by connecting them to a simple circuit. Everyone
found out that the light bulb lit up when metal was connected
within the circuit. This allowed us to conclude that electricity
runs through metal and therefore it is a conductor of electricity.
We also discovered that wires are coloured with different
insulation materials to help us identify their purpose. For
example, plugs have an earth wire which is coloured yellow and
green, a live wire which is brown and a neutral wire which is
blue. We drew our own diagrams to helps us remember this
information. Finally, we learnt about the purpose of insulation
and why some wires need to be kept
separated.

… this week we enjoyed a unique opportunity to visit the Secondary Art Department and learn from Mrs Lee
Lacey. We studied proportional figures in Art. We looked at lots of different art work that involved the figures in
different styles and positions. Mrs Lacey taught us how to ensure that when we draw figures all of the body parts
are in portion to one another. We sketched a range of models striking different poses, focusing on the
proportional lengths of the body. We loved our expert tuition! We also created stick people made of newspaper.
We learnt so much in the hour and can’t wait to apply it to our future drawings. A massive thank you from all of
us in Five Red, Mrs Lacey!
… it has been an exhausting few weeks with lots of assessments. Trying our best to keep ourselves motivated, we
have been sharing our favourite moments from Year 6 and celebrating the success of others in class before our move into the Secondary Department. Our new English topic Biographies and Autobiographies has started and we are using research and note taking skills to find out about famous people from the past and present. Making links to our ‘Born in the USA’ topic we have each chosen a famous American personality to write about.

Year 6 Orange and Yellow have been working hard over the last few weeks learning to read music. We have been
looking at how something as small as a 'dot' can drastically change the rhythm of the piece. Now that we are more
confident in reading the notes, this week we tried to write our own maths equations in small groups. The rest of
the class then worked out the answer and wrote their own equations as an answer. It was a fun way to apply our
knowledge from maths lessons to what we do in Music. The next challenge is to play these rhythms!
This term, Year 4 have been experimenting with the Visualize app to resourcefully create a
colourful and magical work for display. Visualize not only allowed us to combine a variety of
technology skills such as importing images, cropping, and creating, but we also sketched,
brainstormed, and presented our final work as posters for electrical safety. What a fantastic app to create visually
appealing posters to draw attention to information of importance. How could you use the Visualize app to create
appealing posters for use around the home with routines, schedules, etc?
