Issue 23 Summer 2016 Page 1 WELCOME. Welcome to all HSSP Schools and to the summer of school sport. We hope that your school pupils and staff are enjoying lots of sporting participation/physical activity and events/festivals inside and outside of the school environment. Congratulations to those schools that qualified for the Kent School Games finals this summer and in particular to the Rainham Mark Grammar School Girls Handball team, who won the Medway, Kent and South East Regional Schools Tournaments and then finished 4th on the England National Schools Championships between December 2015 and June 2016. The Medway SSG (Secondary School Games) has also proved to be a busy and successful year in terms of participation rates from school teams, with twelve sporting events throughout the year and the final District Athletics on 14th July 2016, where each school will represent an Olympic country. Furthermore, most HSSP Secondary Schools gained funding for a Satellite sports club, with a community link. The Howard SSP staff have been working hard to finalise the Primary P.E. Assessment tool in order to help Primary staff track and monitor pupils progress in P.E. lessons. We have also recently delivered some CPD workshops that have gone down well with teaching staff on: OAA, Change4Life/Health and physical activity clubs and Active Numeracy. We welcome any ideas from primary schools for future P.E./School Sport training courses we could arrange for 2016-2017. Health projects such as Change4Life clubs and targeting physically inactive children is becoming a higher priority. Clubs such as Change4Life are very important and we strongly advise schools to use their Primary P.E. Premium Funding to improve the health and well-being of primary school children. The HSSP has worked closely with Byron Primary to deliver a 6 week health project at Medway Park this summer and the HSSP rewarded the St. Marys Primary School (Gillingham) Change4Life Club (who completed a HSSP survey and has continued to deliver Change4Life clubs at school for several years) with 2 team visits to the ‘Fun Drum’ soft play venue. Primary Schools need to be aware that there might well be possible future government grants for primary schools with the announcement of the future ‘sugar tax’ funding from 2017 onwards. As soon as we hear more, we will let schools know. We are aware of delays to the launch of the ‘National Obesity Strategy’ due to the EU vote. Please note: The Medway Tennis Festival (dates: 25th July - 30th July 2016) where lots of different Tennis activities, coaching and competitions take place at various venues across Medway for beginners or players. Please promote these flyers (sent in the post to your school, together with this newsletter) to your pupils and staff. Many thanks for all your help with school sport this year. Summary of evaluations received from delegates that attended the HSSP CPD Primary P.E. courses from September 2015 to July 2016

England Schools Handball National finalists: Rainham Mark Grammar School, Girls U13 TeamRainham Mark Grammar School Girls U13 Handball team - (see photo above) have achieved a great deal as a team this academic year: Winners of the Medway SSG Handball Events in December 2015 Winners of the Kent School Games Handball finals in February 2016 Winners of the South East Regional Handball finals in April 2016 4th placed in the country at the National Schools Handball Championships in June 2016. The team lost in extra time in the 3rd/4th place play-off match, to finish in 4th place in the country as a whole.

So this series of fantastic performances at four Schools Handball tournaments demonstrated the commitment and teamwork that a school sports team can achieve. They should be very proud to be placed 4th in the country in their age group, in the increasingly popular sport of Handball.

We look forward to hearing more about this team as they progress through to the older age groups and the increased popularity of the sport of Handball at Rainham Mark Grammar School. Many thanks go to their P.E. Teachers and Team Manager: Mr. Paterson.

Medway Tri Golf Festival - years 1 and 2 at Medway Park - 16th June 2016The Tri Golf Festival was very well supported on Thursday 16th June with 17 primary schools in attendance and 12 pupils per team.

The overall final positions and results from across both the morning and the afternoon sessions were as follows:

Many congratulations to the 2 Fair Play Award School teams: Fairview in the morning and All Faiths in the afternoon. Medals were awarded to the top 3 team positions.

The winning team: St. Thomas More Primary will be receiving the perpetual wooden shield to keep for one year – WELL DONE.

Many thanks to the volunteer sports leaders (and their Teachers/School Sport Co-ordinators) from the Hundred of Hoo and the Howard Secondary Schools. We simply cannot deliver these events without them, so their help is absolutely essential. The Sport Leaders did a great job, even with the distraction of the England football match going on against Wales in the afternoon!

Also many thanks go to Primary Teachers and parents/grandparents for their support at this Festival and well done to every child that took part.

Health Projects and Activities with Primary Schools and Teaching StaffThe Howard SSP is working closely with Byron Primary to provide a 6 week Health Project with Medway Park Children’s Shokk Gym and Gym Instructors. This is part a Health grant received from Medway Public Health Team.

A Change4Life workshop was also held in June at St. Marys Primary School in partnership with Emma Block - Medway Council Public Health Team and here 9 teaching staff from 4 primary schools learnt about Change4Life club principles and general ethos. Colleagues benefitted from sharing games ideas and discussing how to go about setting up a Change4life club and keep regular attendance at the club.

We are actively encouraging Primary Schools to think about targeting young people that are physically inactive, to help them to change their current inactivity levels and discuss ideas on nutrition.

St. Marys Primary School completed a recent HSSP survey and demonstrated their commitment to Change4Life clubs for all year groups and as a reward they received 2 group visits to the Fun Drum Soft Play venue (see group photo above).
