Last month I wrote about our funding from Hambleton, Richmondshire & Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group for our ‘Befriending through Sport’ project. We can now announce that the project started on Monday 23
rd March.
We held a very successful ‘Sports Taster Day’ at Whitby Leisure Centre on 14
th
March when even the weather was kind, if a little bit cool, for the Adapted Bikes who were outdoors, unlike the other sports (Boccia, Archery, Boxercise, Easy Line, and Volleyball).
I must thank all the DAG staff and volunteers who took part, in addition to Chris Storer and the Whitby Leisure Centre staff, Matt Hewison, the

Scarborough Borough Council Sports Development Officer and Anthony Laffan who quickly adapted the “seated” volleyball to standing, when preferred by participants. Thanks, too, to everyone who helped people to join in the sports.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the event, and it was particularly good to see so many young men involved and having great fun whilst trying out the various sports. Kelly has produced some excellent photographs, although one or two of those taken of the volleyball look a little bit like the old ‘Spot the Ball’ competitions that newspapers used to run!
If you would like to take part in the project, either as a participant or as a volunteer, please contact Kelly. And please don’t be put off by the idea of ‘sport’. The important thing is to meet people, and have fun; the sports can be as gentle or as vigorous as people wish.
One of the big successes of the ‘Sports Taster’ Day was the ‘Accessible Cycling’ provided by Scarborough & Ryedale Community Cycling, using a range of bicycles & tricycles which can offer side-by-side, in-line, hand pedal, foot pedal, and wheelchair accessible riding. Unfortunately, with the limited amount of funding we could apply for from the Clinical Commissioning Group it wasn’t possible to include this in the Project. However, seeing its success has made me determined to find some funding to offer this. When 12 out of 13 people who tried it gave it 10 out of 10 (and the other one gave it 9) you know

when you have a ‘winner’.
It doesn’t take much television watching or radio listening to see or hear that loneliness and isolation is a big issue in the UK. Duncan Selbie, the head of Public Health England said that “being isolated is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day”. DAG now has three projects helping to ease loneliness and isolation amongst disabled people, people with mental ill health and other vulnerable people in our community, and that’s before you take into account all the excursions, for example, that are available for our Members and which provide so much fun, enjoyment and friendship.
Finally, may I wish everyone a very Happy Easter.
Richard

Watch Out For Scams
As more people join the internet every day, hundreds of new scams are being thought up. Like anywhere in life, it pays to be aware of the risks.
You may already have heard of Phishing. This is where
fraudsters try to obtain personal or financial information from internet users (identity theft), usually by sending an e-mail that looks like it's from a legitimate organisation.
REMEMBER
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is Your bank will never ask you to provide all of your
bank details by e-mail Do not open attachments on messages if you are
not absolutely sure who the sender is
Visihing is similar to Phishing, but it takes place over the
telephone (Voice phishing). An example would be where the fraudster telephones, pretending to be from a legitimate organisation and asks for specific details about your account, e.g. "please can you give me your full account number so I can check …"
“Think Jessica” is a project to protect elderly and
vulnerable people from postal and telephone scams. We have some of their free booklets from at the DAG office, so please call in. Or you can request one from Think Jessica, PO Box 44 42, Chesterfield, S44 9AS. Enclose a loose second class stamp with your request.
