The Akshaya Patra Foundation commonly known as Akshaya Patra is a non-profit organisation in India that runs school lunch programme across India. The organisation was established in 2000.

Akshaya Patra is an initiative of ISKCON Bangalore to provide mid-day meals in the rural schools for the underprivileged children and thus support their education. The vision statement of Akshaya Patra states: No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.

In June 2000, the Akshaya Patra Foundation started feeding 1500 children in Bangalore and today it is reaching out to more than 1.3 million children every day. Akshaya Patra is

currently operating in 19 locations across 9 states of India and is conferred as the World’s Largest NGO-run Mid-Day Meal Program. The mission is to reach 5 million children by 2020.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation works in partnership with the Central and various State Governments of India to provide mid-day meals to children studying in Government and Government-aided schools. The Foundation runs its operations through two kitchen models: Centralized Kitchens, which are suitable for urban and semi-urban locations, are mostly mechanized and employ innovative technology to cook meals for thousands of children within a few hours. Decentralized Kitchens are set-up in areas that are not easily accessible and employ women of that particular area for the cooking process.

The mid-day meal program has seen positive impact across India. It has facilitated in improving the nutritional status of the children and also has resulted in increased enrolment and attendance in the schools. The rate of drop-outs considerably reduced. It

also improved the performance of the students in class; their attention span has improved and they have shown good academic progress.

Keeping all these positive objectives in mind the students of New Horizon Gurukul were taken on a one day visit to the Akshay Patra Foundation,ISKON and were given opportunity to view the Kitchens . Thereafter they

could experience the importance of serving the children of Government and Government Aided Schools in Bangalore by participating in the Mid Day Meal programme. It was indeed a life time experience and made the students to understand the importance and value of food and also, could nurture the habit of sharing and caring for others.

Our Traditional ValuesThe recently concluded festive season saw an influx of sweets and savouries in my house with my neighbours coming to my house with a bonhomie that can only be felt and not described. Needless to say I also reciprocated in kind. As this friendly exchange went on I started thinking indeed how our tradition teaches us so many things!

The offering of food to the Lord before eating teaches us to show our gratitude for all the beautiful things that He has given us. The distribution of prasadam is an example of sharing and caring, to think about less fortunate people and let them also enjoy the festive season.

Be it Christmas, Id or Ganesha festival, isn’t it the universal brotherhood that is impressed upon by each of them?

The fabric of Indian culture is woven with customs and traditions. Traditions help form the structure and foundation of our families and our society. They remind us that we are part of a history that defines our past, shapes who we are today and who we are likely to become. They reinforce values such as freedom, faith, integrity, a good education, personal responsibility, a strong work ethic, and the value of being selfless. They serve as an avenue for creating lasting memories for our families and friends. Indeed our culture and tradition is so rich that just by making them a part of our life can be a very fulfilling experience.

Our tradition lays a lot of emphasis on respect and reverence of nature.

Prithvi Sukta in Atharva Veda states:

Mata Bhumih Putroham Prithivyah

My mother is Earth and I am Her son

An evergreen tree like the banyan is a symbol of eternal life. In temples along with the sthala purana (pastime related to the place), one can find sthala Vriksha (a particular tree related to that place). Among trees peepal is very much revered. Today there is evidence to the fact that peepal tree gives out oxygen in the night also.

All rivers – Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Kaveri are considered holy by us. In fact so much emphasis was given on conserving water that each and every temple was built around or near a source of water.

Our tradition teaches us to live in harmony with nature, and recognize the divinity present in all including plants and animals.

In fact Mahatma Gandhi said -

"I bow my head in reverence to our ancestors for their sense of the beautiful in nature and for their foresight in investing beautiful manifestations of Nature with a religious significance."

Traditional Indian food is considered to be one of the healthiest in the world. Each of the Indian spices used, has a medicinal value and has an important role to play. The antioxidants present in red chilli help to cope with cholesterol. It also helps in burning calories. Cardamom supports natural production of insulin and reduces blood cholesterol.

Have you ever wondered why our grandparents sat on the floor and ate? Why they ate on banana leaves? Why mehendi is applied on hands and legs? Why bangles are worn? Why surya namaskar is done early in the morning, before the rising sun?

Sitting on the floor, the Sukhasana position is the best for digestion. Banana leaves are hygienic and biodegradable, not to speak of the medicinal value of eating hot food on it! Mehendi is a known cooling agent and bangles increase the blood circulation in the body by their friction. The advantage of doing yoga is known to everybody today!

To think that these practices have been coming through generations, and each one of them had a reason behind it, makes it a fascinating study.

As somebody said –

You don't  stumble upon your heritage. It's there, just waiting to be explored and shared.

Swami Vivekananda on Education

• Educate and raise the masses, and thus alone a nation is possible.• Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man.• How can there be any progress of the country without the spread of

education, the dawning of knowledge?• If the mountain does not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to

the mountain. If the poor cannot come to education, education must reach them at the plough, in the factory, everywhere.

• Education is not fi lling the mind with a lot of facts. Perfecting the instrument and getting complete mastery of my own mind [is the ideal of education].

• The education which does not help the common mass of people to equip themselves for the struggle for life, which does not bring out strength of character, a spirit of philanthropy, and the courage of a lion— is it worth of the name? Real education is that which enables one to stand on one's own legs.

• To me the very essence of education is concentration of mind, not the collecting of facts. If I had to do my education over again, and had any voice in the matter, I would not study facts at all. I would develop the power of concentration and detachment, and then with a perfect instrument I could collect facts at will. Side by side, in the child, should be developed the power of concentration and detachment.

• We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet.

Rain

The rain comes over my rooftop,I do wish it wouldn’t stop,

It starts drizzling drop by drop,The rain comes over my rooftop.

When I hear ,That the rain is near ,

I cheer,As the rain comes over my rooftop.

When the rain comes with all his might,It is a wonderful sight,

And that shall be the coolest night,As the rain comes over the rooftop.

When the rain has stopped,When the last drop dropped,

When the bird’s wings fl apped,The rain stopped coming over my rooftop.

With the Right to Education (RTE) being implemented and awareness about special needs and inclusion growing, more and more children will be part of mainstream education. Taking this into consideration, New Horizon Gurukul has been providing Counselling and Special education support from its very inception. It is aimed at guiding students overcome their academic and emotional barriers.

Counselling here is provided for issues like low self confi dence, peer pressure, exam related stress, lack of concentration, hyperactivity, misbehavior or other concerns affecting behaviour. Counselling is a process which takes times and changes in the student may be noticed only after a few sessions depending on the severity of the issue. Confi dentiality is an essential part for the success of the counseling process as such parents will be involved based on discretion.

Special educators are a team of professionals who not only supports children with special needs such as Autism, mental retardation but also provide remedial assistance to the children with learning diffi culties. shapes and forms. Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms. The Mandala (Sanskrit for “circle” or “completion”) has a long history and is recognized for its deep spiritual meaning and representation of wholeness.Mandalas were created in the service of one of the world's great religions, Buddhism. They were produced in Tibet, India, Nepal, China, Japan, Bhutan, and Indonesia and date back from the 4th century to the present. Nowadays they are created throughout the world. The very nature of creating a mandala is therapeutic and symbolic. The shapes and colors you create in your mandala art therapy will refl ect your inner self at the time of creation. Your instinct and feeling should inspire and guide you through the process of creation. Ultimately, you will be creating a portrait of yourself as you are when creating the mandala. So, whatever you are feeling at that time, whatever emotions are coming through, will be represented in your mandala art therapy. As with most art therapy, it’s not about the fi nal product…it’s about the journey. Thus everyone can immerse in the innate beauty of ones own thoughts and emotions and draw freely upon imagination. This creates a true art.
