Important Changes to the Calendar
August 23, 2018Issue 2
November 1 - Day of Prayer and Service is a PLC Late Start Day. Students arrive by 9:20.
November 15 – originally a PLC Day, is now a C Schedule with a 2:00 dismissal. Parent/Teacher conferences will take place as scheduled. There will not be SEEK on this day.
Annual House TaiLgate
The annual House Tailgate celebration will be Friday, September 7, 2018 before the football game against Bishop Ready as we celebrate the tradition of this long-held rivalry. The event takes place from 5:30-6:30 to allow for cleanup before game time. We will need both donations and volunteers to help with set-up beginning after school. Sign up to help!
The event is changing slightly this year as we will not have a chili cook-off. Stay tuned for details about the new setup and a House Competition to design a new banner for the House Parent Organization (HPO)!
NewsWelcome New Faculty & Staff
We welcome many new faces to the Bishop Hartley faculty and staff for the 2018-2019 school year. We also welcome back some familiar faces of those returning to Hartley. Learn a little more about many of them below.
Maria Barber joins our science department and will be teaching chemistry and comprehensive science this year. She holds both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University. She has a younger brother who is a senior mechanical engineering student at OSU and a lot of extended family in the Columbus area. In her spare time, she spends time with brother, her cousins and other family - as well as playing softball, hiking, kayaking, and painting.
Melanie Batty who joins our English department this year, completed her undergraduate degree at Miami University and her graduate work at the University of Minnesota. She has previously taught English in both Hawaii and Minnesota.
Chris Blum joins the Hartley math department this year after teaching for the Kipp Academy previously. He attended St. Xavier High School and The Ohio State University.
Kailey Brochowski will join the World Languages department this year to teach Spanish. She did her student teaching at Hartley last year, so she qualifies as both a new face and a returning face! She attended Westland High School and graduated from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University last spring.
Rachel Dues joins the English department this year. She has both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Dayton. Before coming to Hartley, she taught English at Cardinal Ritter High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. She would like to be involved with the Battle of the Books team this year.
Shannon Howard is a new addition to the social studies department this year. She is a Hartley graduate and received her undergraduate degree from Xavier University and attended Muskingum for her graduate studies. Shannon has four kids under age five. Her youngest was born while her husband was deployed with the Army National Guard in Jordan.
Andrea Klein returns to Hartley this year after teaching part-time at St. Matthew previously. She will be part of the World Languages department with additional duties in the Advancement Office. She attended Muhlenburg College and The Ohio State University. She is excited to be back at St. Matthew.

Our final new staff member is Megan Trinh who returns to teach in our math department after spending last year in Ann Arbor, Michigan as a stay-at-home mom with now one-year-old daughter, Allie, while her husband and fellow Hartley alum, Thai, completed his Orthopedic Surgery-Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
