LLMAG: Where are you from? Chris: Charlotte, North Carolina What side of town where you raised on? Chris: I am from Fourth Ward. There is no Fourth Ward as we knew it back then. It was on the four corners of the Square. First Ward, Second Ward, Third Ward and Fourth Ward, I lived in one of those Wards. Why did you start carving? Well I’ve always been an artist I’ve always drawn. As a young boy, when I went to school I thought everybody knew how to draw. No one taught it to me. So it was something I thought everybody could do. When I realized that everyone couldn’t, that’s when I thought…I might have a little talent here. You know. So why do u carve sticks? It’s not like I’m carving the sticks, The sticks are dictating to me what they are. It’s like an exchange

of my time to the natural development of the trees. I don’t know… It’s like some kind of connection, like the internet or something I don’t know. They can tell me who they are. It’s characters between all trees. So, where do you hope to go with carving the sticks? Do you want to potentially sell them? Or do you just want to carve because it’s your artistry and it’s a talent that you have? I want to market the ideas. I don’t really want to sell the sticks, but I want to sell the characters that I communicate from the sticks, so that the characters can be transferred over to cards, jewelry or glass… you know whatever. That one carving takes me hours and hours to do. I wanted it to be my income basically. If I had it as my income I would never go unemployed again. Tell me about some of the sticks and what some of them mean. I have one from my biblical background, it’s an Adam and Eve episode. The lady is on top of the

serpent and the man is at the bottom holding an apple. Like nothing can come between us but the serpent. I’m trying to tell that story because a lot of people don’t know it. See allot of people don’t read the book. And they don’t know the story so, I have to find another meaning to bring the same idea to peo-ple. I found carving to be one of them and if that’s my Pulpit then am going to stand and do my thing. How can people contact you? You can find me on Belmont Ave. and through Local Looks Magazine. Do you have any final comments or shot- outs? Not really. All I want is you people to realize is that there are some great things right under your noses, all you really have to do is listen and observe. The real shot-out is to this magazine for giving me the chance to tell this story. It’s good that someone who came from this place has grown up to realize that there are allot of talent individuals here.
