YMER WEEK at GK Last week our school was extremely fortunate to have Michael

Ymer, an Internationally and Nationally renowned consultant in

mathematics, spend the week with us.

Our learning relationship began with Michael in 2014 when our

teachers worked a full Curriculum Day in Term 1 with him. We

then had Michael visit us in Term 4 to consult with our team

leaders over maths curriculum and preparation for this year.

Michael’s visit last week was energising and inspiring as it focused on

TEACHING TEACHERS. Michael spent four days teaching some classes

from Prep through to Year 6 while all classroom teachers observed his

maths practice during numerous sessions. Each team then also participated

in a targeted learning session with Michael which allowed reflections and

questions to be shared with the intent to embed this level of quality

teaching across the school.

We are passionate about improving our maths knowledge and practice so

that we can provide the best opportunities for learning in every class. Ymer

Week has further developed every teacher’s capacity in teaching maths and

we look forward to continued visits throughout this year from Michael to

support us in growing our skills further.

We’d love to share our school with you so drop by if you can.

HEALTHY BODIES and MINDS DAY at GK Thursday 26th March you are invited to attend our day where students will

SCHOOL CAPTAINS

There are a range of opportunities for students to develop leadership skills at GK and for many, to take on a minor or major leadership role. Opportunities exist for those interested in becoming School Captains, House Captains, Peer Mediators, Green Team leaders, moni-tors, team captains and buddies, just to name a few ways that students can get experience at being a leader. Whether for a short while or a longer period, the skills and qualities of leader-ship are the same.

At assembly this week, the 2015 School Cap-tains introduced themselves to the students and adults present. The students presented with their badge of office were: Harrison P,

Alex G, Remi S and Elyse M. Congratula-

tions to our new school captains!

We all look forward to their leadership, support and involvement in a range of ways throughout the 2015 school year.

Currently, a House Captain election process is underway during which grade 6 students can nominate for a House Captain role. The process involves self nomination, a short listing process, speech presentations to peers and teachers and eventual-ly, eight House Captains are announced.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS The School Council election process begins today and anyone who is interested in the work of School Council and / or would like to nominate for a position on School Council is encouraged to read the information published in this edition of the Linkletter. Our School Council members comprise both parents and staff and together, we oversee the school’s facilities, finances, policies and operations of several of the school’s programs (eg. Canteen, Out of School Hours Care Program, school uniform requirements, cleaning con-tractual arrangements).

School Council meetings are held monthly, on a Wednesday evening. Members also belong to at least one or two sub-committees which also have evening meetings, sometimes monthly or once a term, depending on the needs of the sub-committee.

The composition of GK’s School Council comprises a membership of 15 people as follows:

⇒ 1 Executive Officer (Principal)

⇒ 7 Parent category members

⇒ 4 Department of Education and Training category members

⇒ 3 Community (or co-opted) members.

Each year, half of the memberships’ term of office expires. Members can renominate and/or nominations are received from others. An election is held if the number of nominations for vacant positions exceeds the number of positions available.

A further page of information about School Council is published in today’s Linkletter, also information can be found on our website. (About Us tag / School Council). I am also very happy to respond to any inquiries about School Council membership so please contact me if you would like to learn more.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS NOTICE 2015

Information for Parents

What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a

school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school

provides for its students.

Who is on the school council?

There are three possible categories of membership:

◊ A mandated elected Parent category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at

the school.

◊ A mandated elected DEECD employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total member-ship of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.

◊ An optional Community member category. Its members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, inter-ests or experiences.

◊ DEECD employees are not eligible to be Community members.

The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elec-

tions.

Why is Parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those par-

ents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense

of belonging.

How can you become involved?

The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate

as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider;

• standing for election as a member of the school council

• encouraging another person to stand for election.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.

What do you need to do to stand for election?

The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must

be completed by the end of March. If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can

nominate yourself in the Parent category. School Council nomination forms are available from the school office. Once completed, please re-

turn the nomination form to the principal within the time stated on the notice of election. If there are more nominations received than there

are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted in the week following close of nominations. Remember …. If you are interested and need

more information, please don’t hesitate to contact the Principal.

Schedule 4 Notice of Election and Call for Nominations

An election is to be conducted for members of the School Council of Glen Katherine Primary School.

Nomination forms may be obtained from the school website or office and must be lodged by 4.00 pm Thursday 26th February, 2015. A ballot

(if required,) will close at 4.00 pm on Friday, 6th March, 2015. Following the close of nominations, a list of the nominations received will be

posted in the foyer. The terms of office, membership categories and number of positions in each membership category open for election are as

follows:

SPORTS NEWS

SWIMMING TRIALS

Swimming trials were held at the Diamond Creek Outdoor Pool on Monday 9th February. It was pleasing to see that the num-

bers participating have increased by 20 students in comparison to previous years.( 97 students in total ) A reflection of the

successful intensive Gr 3-4 swimming program. Most pleasing was the students behaviour and endeavour on the day.

The District team that has been selected from these trials will compete at the Diamond Valley District sports to be held at

Greensborough WaterMarc on Thursday 26th February. Training for the team will be held on Monday 16th February and 23rd

February at Diamond Creek Pool from 3.45 – 4.30pm. A big thank you to the many parents who assisted on the day, in par-

ticular Tracey Russell and Jodie Watts.

David Blackburn

( PE & Sports coordinator )

SUMMER INTERSCHOOL SPORT Summer interschool sport commences this Friday 13th February. Matches commence at 9.30am and conclude at 10.45pm. Students

can wear their sports uniform to school but must change back into their GK uniform after the sports conclude. Please ensure your

child has a drink bottle, school hat and appropriate footwear. Home games for all matches will be played at the school except

cricket which will be played at Anthony Beale Reserve.

CRICKETERS Parents, please be aware that it isn’t compulsory for students to provide their own equipment for cricket. The school has a full set

of cricket equipment which is available to all players each week.

Code of Conduct for Sport at GK

For the benefit of parents whose children are involved in interschool sport – I have included some information about the sport policy of our

governing body – School Sport Victoria (SSV).

The code of conduct is very different from what is acceptable in children’s sport outside of school. Please be aware that there is to

be no coaching by teachers or parents during GAME TIME of affiliated events. Coaching can only occur during breaks in play by

the nominated coach. This policy becomes more important as children/teams progress towards the state finals. Sometimes howev-

er, at the lower levels, coaches agree that the main emphasis of the game should be on educating the children about the game

(rules, positioning etc.) If you come along to watch your child compete, please be aware that telling the children where to position themselves, who to pass to, when to run etc, is deemed inappropriate. Abusing umpires and opposition players is totally unacceptable. Of course applauding good play is quite OK. Everyone who attends our games and events needs to be

aware of the difficult position the teachers could potentially be placed in if parents/spectators break the ‘code’. Children (and

teams) who have deemed to have been coached during events (such as swimming and cross country) can be disqualified.

Please come and see me if you have any questions or would like to read the SSV code of conduct in full.

David Blackburn

Basketball refereeing – assistance is required each Friday with refereeing home basketball games. If you have some basketball refereeing experience and are able to assist please contact David Blackburn or Shannon Whelan at the school.

For further information regarding sport please refer to Sport Guidelines on the school web site or Sport/PE blog. An up date fix-

ture will be provided on the PE blog and GK website for reference.

Glen Katherine Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. As well as teaching children the importance of saving our school receives $5 when a stu-dent makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). . The School Banking program provides children with an opportunity to make deposits into their personal Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account at school each week. The program is about how often your child makes deposits, not how much they deposit. To encourage regular savings behaviour the program offers an exciting Rewards Program. Every de-posit earns your child a Dollarmites token, and once they’ve collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a reward. The rewards items available during 2015 are:

ET DVD, released Term 1 Planet Handball, released Term 1 Invisible Ink Martian Pen, released Term 2 Intergalactic Rocket, released Term 2 Glow -in-the-Dark Solar System, released Term 3 Cosmic Light Beam Torch, released Term 3 Outer Space Savers Money Box, released Term 4 Lunar Light Band , released Term 4

School Banking day is Thursday, commencing 5th March 2015. Each week you need to bring your dol-larmites bank book and deposit to school, place it in the school banking satchel in class at the beginning of the day, and your deposit will be processed that day. Bank books will be returned to students on the Friday of each week. If you have an existing Youth saver account, you can use this as your school banking account, alterna-tively the Commonwealth Bank will be holding an account opening day on 2nd March at 8.15am – 9.30am and again in the afternoon from 2.30pm-3.30pm. An additional account opening session will be held on Thursday 5th March 2015 at 8.15am. If you are interested in opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account for your child please bring along your current driver’s licence or another form of photographic identification. No identification is re-quired for your child attending school, as the school will confirm their identity. Alternatively, you can open an account at any branch, by calling 13 22 21, or online if you are an existing Commonwealth Bank customer. You will need to provide your child’s birth certificate if you are opening the account at a Branch. For more information or if you’d like to join our team (we’d love a couple more helpers), please speak to one of the school banking team: Melissa Houston – School Banking Co-Ordinator (mob: 0409932565) Tarsha Durant, Justine Morris or Kirsty Reddrop – School Banking Team

LIBRARY NEWS All students attend a Library session each week with their class teacher. During this time, students in Prep to Grade 3 have the

opportunity of borrowing up to 3 books to take home. Loan duration is 2 weeks but these can be returned or renewed at anytime.

Students in Grades 4 to 6 may borrow 3 personal choice books and 1 class literature book set by their Teacher. Loan duration is 3

weeks.

Some titles may be in high demand so the loan period may only be one week.

Please ensure your child, if in Prep to Grade 4 inclusive, has a library bag, preferably a waterproof one and labelled with their

name. A recycled strong plastic shopping bag is quite suitable.

Due to a large number of damaged library books, mainly caused from spilt drinks in school bags, we will be enforcing the rule that

a bag is required if borrowing.

Occasionally accidents happen and books are damaged. If damage does occur, please do not repair it. Specific materials are used

for specific mending. Please advise Library staff of the damage so that appropriate repairs can be made. Students will not be

growled at for accidental damage.

If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair , the school’s expectation is for payment be made to replace such items.

The Library is open before school at 8.30am and after school till 3.15 pm for students to borrow.

We welcome parents to visit the Library with their children during these times.

We have a small Parent Reference section dealing with topics related to Sex Education, Raising children, Death of family and pets which parents are welcome to borrow from. Thank you for your support and happy reading!
