What Insecticide to Use and When to Use Them

With so many insecticide products on the market, choosing the right one can be more of a task than it may seem! Like many other lawn care products, knowing what exactly you’re treating for and the timing of application is imperative for insecticides to be effective against their targeted pests. Insecticides can be broken down into those that treat surface insects and those that treat and subsurface insects. According to an article from Turf Care Supply, “Curative insecticides can be effective in a matter of 1-3 days and will break down completely after 1-2 weeks. Curative insecticides have the ability to persist longer if they penetrate the thatch and/or are applied to the soil. Curative insecticides are typically applied once an insect population has reached a damaging level. Insecticides take 3-7 days to affect targeted insects but will continue to remain active for periods of 3-5 weeks or longer.” Post-hatch materials need to be applied prior to any noticeable pest populations develop. See the below chart to further describe the differences between these product types.

Proven insecticide that controls surface Grubs, most Ants (including Carpenter, Red Harvester, Pavement, Odorous, Pyramid, Argentine, Pharaoh, Black Turf), Armyworms (including Lawn Armyworm, Fall Armyworm), Billbugs (including Bluegrass Billbug, Hunting Billbug), Black Turfgrass Ataenius (adults), Bristletail, Centipedes, Chiggers, Chinch Bugs, Crickets, Cutworms (including Black Cutworm, Bronzed Cutworm, Granulate Cutworm, Variegated Cutworm), Dichondra Flea Beetle, Earwigs, European Crane Fly, Fiery Skipper, Fire Ants, Firebrat, Fleas, Fruitfly, Grasshoppers, Greenbug, Ground Beetles, Ground Pearl, Leafhoppers, Lucerne Moth, Mealybugs, Millipedes, Mole Crickets (including Tawny Mole Cricket, Southern Mole Cricket, Short-winged Mole Cricket), Pillbugs, Seed Maggots, Ticks ( Including Ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease), Spiders, Springtails, Striped Grassworm, Two-lined Spittlebugs, Webworms (including Sod Webworm, Grass Webworm, Topical Sod Webworm), Weevils (including Hyperodes and Bluegrass) and Wireworms.

Warm Season Turf DiseasesSummer is here on Ohio! So far this season, Mother Nature has given us everything from heavy rains to high temperatures into the 90’s to deal with. Lot’s for our lawns to be going through, and with changing temperatures and humidity comes turf disease. There are more species of turf diseases than we can begin to count; however, here is a short list of (5) warm season turf diseases you want to be on the lookout for in the coming weeks.

DOLLAR SPOTSusceptible Grasses:BluegrassBentgrassFine FescuesPerennial Ryegrass

Signs & Symptoms:• Circular tan patches/spots (1-6”)• Leaf lesions light tan with dark edges• Leaf lesions go across leaf blade (a band)• White fungal growth may be present in early

morning when dew present

LEAF SPOTSusceptible Grasses:Kentucky BluegrassFine FescuePerennial Ryegrass

Signs & Symptoms:• Initially very small dark spots on leaves Spots

enlarge in size• Center of spots may be a lighter brown Leaf

sheaths can be entirely• Crowns rot, turf thins (“melting out”)

RED THREADSusceptible Grasses:Perennial Ryegrass Fine Fescue Kentucky Bluegrass Tall Fescue Bentgrass

Signs & Symptoms:• Patches appear as tan, light pink or reddish• Leaf tips and edges of leaves have fine pink or

red strains of fungus present • Size of patches variable (2-12”)

POWDERY MILDEWSusceptible Grasses:Kentucky BluegrassFine Fescue

What to doManagement strategies vary for each of these diseases and it is important that proper precautions be taken. Frequent mowing at the proper height provides increased air circulation to your turf; which is a helpful precautionary strategy. Avoiding nitrogen deficiency as well as not over or under watering your turf will also help keep your turf healthy throughout the season. Treat the diseases you see here with the appropriate products listed below.

The introduction of new creeping bentgrass cultivars with superior genetics into stands of annual bluegrass, perennial ryegrass or creeping bentgrass can reduce costs and increase golfer satisfaction. Lower inputs and less fear of turfgrass loss from cold or heat make conversion a long term solution. Superior disease resistance, higher density, improved cool temperature growth with drought and heat tolerance make these cultivars long term solutions.

Key Concepts• Bentgrass seedlings are very small and initially weak. Varieties like 007, SR 1150, Flagstick and

Tyee have greater seedling vigor and faster tillering to increase chances of success.• In competition for resources including light, water and nutrients an established plant has

an advantage over seedlings.• Creeping bentgrass germination is favored by warmer soil temperatures (above 71º F or 22º C) (See figures at right from University of Minnesota, Horgan, Bauer and Cavanaugh 2015).

Timing the overseeding to correspond with favorable growing conditions in summer or early fall increases your chance of success.

• Poa annua germination primarily occurs in fall when temperatures are below 68º F (20º C). This corresponds to most germination in a 2 week period between late September and mid-October.

• Existing plants must be weakened to give seed or holes created to give young seedlings a chance.

Poa annua to Bentgrass or Bentgrass to New Bentgrass1. Do not apply a pre-emergent herbicide before seeding.2. Use a growth regulator 1 week before and wait at least 2 weeks after.3. Reduce height of cut on existing turf (scalp <0.1 or lower for greens).4. Verticut heavily to reduce thatch and further weaken existing turf (can also follow aerification).5. Core aerify with largest acceptable tines to create holes and topdress or drag cores to

fill holes. Dimple tines, Graden sand inject or spiking have also worked. Key is reduce competition and have seed to soil contact.

6. Best times for establishment are late spring through summer into early fall. Seeding dates of June 19, July 1, Aug 17 & 20 were most successful in New Jersey and August seeding dates in Indiana.

7. Seed with preferred Bentgrass varieties at 1-3 lbs/1000 sq. ft. (5 -15 gr/sq. m) and topdress or drag seed in.

8. Water at least 1 time per day and use wetting agents if needed.9. Fertilize lightly with foliar spray after seeds germinate.10. Keep height of cut low to enable more light to seedlings, reduce competition and encourage spread of new seedlings. Info referenced from Seed Research of Oregon
